Quote:

The Cleveland Browns placed wide receiver Davone Bess on the reserve/non-football illness list, and he will miss the final two games of the season, the team announced Saturday.

The Browns acquired the slot receiver from the Miami Dolphins in an offseason swap of mid-round draft picks.

Bess missed practice Thursday and Friday while dealing with a "serious family issue," according to The Plain Dealer. He was listed as questionable on the Week 16 injury report.

The team is not commenting on Bess' situation. But ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi reported Bess' troubles have nothing to do with illegal activates, according to a source.

The receiver has been one of the most drop-prone players at his position this season. He compiled 42 receptions for 362 yards and two touchdowns in his first season in Cleveland.

Josh Cooper will likely replace Bess in the slot. The Browns could also move around Greg Little and Josh Gordon more to compensate for Bess' absence.

What concerns me is with him, Haden, Cameron, Bryant and others out it makes my trip to Heinz Field next week much less exciting than it was looking before the second bengals game.

Got those tickets just before that game with high hopes of a meaningful game and a chance for a win at their house.

Now it's looking like I'll take more crap than an outhouse after a family reunion.

I don't know what's going on with his family, but it's probably not a good idea to post pictures of yourself smoking weed on the internet.

Doing so in a high-profile position with a drug screen requirement usually costs you a job.

This guy has been a train wreck every since he arrived in Cleveland. If the Browns pick up the right mix of veterans and rookie Wrs next off-season I don't see him sticking with the Browns much longer.

This is explains why I said "Hi Davone" at training camp and he responded by saying "Maybe" and winking. Now it all makes sense.

Look at it this way ..... that game will be a no lose proposition for us.

If we win, we improve the Steelers 3rd round pick, which we own.

If we lose, we improve our own 1st round pick, which improves our odds of getting the QB we want.

It's a win/win for us. (and as much as I want to finish the season strong, I would rather be in position to draft our franchise QB) We have won meaningless games in the past to screw up our draft position, and I would just as soon lose out at this point. Hopefully the Refs make our final 2 games make the Pats game look like a perfectly officiated game. I want us on the bad side of every single bad call, especially at the end of the game. I want clear fumbles overturned, and opponent passes caught with both feet out of bounds and less than a minute left in the game called complete. I want to lose, but lose because we legitimately could not beat the other team and the officials ,,,, like in the Pats game.

Bring on the pain of 4-12, so we can get our franchise guy. I am sick of losing, so let's just lose out and win in the end.

So does this mean Josh Cooper will be given more snaps? I hope they don't activate Tori Gurly off the practice squad, everytime they do - they gotta cut the poor kid and then resign him.

I'd think the people above, or Tyms (sp) even - will be a better option than Bess. Bess only had one outstanding play/game this year. IMO, he's been an extreme disappointment.

Yes, they said in the Plain Dealer Cooper will be given more snaps.

And yes, Bess has been a big disappointment. I kinda wondered why if he was such a great 3rd down receiver we got him so easily. You know?

Good receivers have been traded for less than we paid for Bess over the years. Anquan Boldin and Brandon Marshall being examples.

Huh? Brandon Marshall trade was for two thirds. http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/i...l-chicago-bears His earlier trade to Miami was for two 2nds http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/news/story?id=5085644

Boldin was for a 6th - http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/raven...-debut-20130908,0,5220514.story

I'd say boldin was about the same cost as Bess (which was an exchange of 5ths + a 7th) - that should come out about the same. Of course, Bess is like 5 years younger.

Strike my Marshall comment then. There aren't a lot of receiver trades I can remember so he came to mind. In terms of value I thought it was relevant to mention. The dude is a phenom and only cost two 3rds.

Seeking to answer the question of why we were able to acquire him for so cheap. Just stating getting a good receiver for cheap in a trade isn't unheard of.

I'm not so sure it's automatic. Just because we lose doesn't necessarily move us up a slot. If the other 5 crappy teams loose too then we stay put in our slot. Maybe that's what you mean.

After seeing Tyms and Cooper yesterday on their limited plays (but at least they HAD plays) - anyone else ready to package up Bess and Little and see what teams we can ship them off to? You know, replace a full garbage bag with a half-full garbage bag ordeal? May not be a leap, a step forward replacing them, but it IMO would be a some sort of advancement forward.

After the Little drop in the endzone, I am done with this kid. So done! Can't rely on these guys so why even freaking pay them?

I'm damn close, myself. Having said that, there's this:

I think he should have been sent to a sports psychologist during last offseason or two. There is something that's preventing him from making 'that one play' that all players must make. Early in the game, he snatched an off-target burner from Campbell near the sidelines that made him look all-world. Caught it in a crowd with no juggling. Then, he gets that perfectly-placed toss in the endzone and becomes "Kaptain Klang" again.

Sometimes, fear of success can be just as debilitating as fear of failure.

It isn't a lack of physical ability that's hampering this kid. This is some mental issue of his. If I were on the staff, I'd do everything I could to help this kid maximize what he has... and for me, that means getting his head sorted out. J.U.G.S. practice can help with coordination and muscle memory, but it can't fix a player's in-game focus.

Get him on a couch. Work on his frontal lobe. Give him one more season.

A good friend of mine is applying to be the team's full-time psychologist.

Fun fact: Not one NFL team has a full-time mental health professional on their payroll.

I think it's more than his hands. Unless he's running a 5 yard crossing pattern, he can't seem to get open either. I think route running is an issue.

I doubt he's on the team next year.

I feel bad for him because of how hard he worked this offseason. I would prefer to see his hard work pay off. It certainly seems deserved. But his play is debilitating to a team trying to establish some success.

I hope he catches on somewhere where he can get it turned around. But I seriously doubt it will be with us.

Little seems like a dim bulb. I know that he does work really hard, but it hasn't translated to anything. He can't run routes and he can't catch.

He also seems to like partying a lot.

That's his right, but extra hours on the Jugs machine doesn't fix stupid.

If there's any position for him in the NFL, it's some kind of H-back role.

The only thing he excels at is YAC, but that means nothing if you can't get initial separation or bring in the pass.

Another blown Heckert reach. The guy is probably our best GM since our return...unfortunately, that doesn't make him any good.

Bess I just don't understand. Guy was rock solid at Miami. Here, he's a blooper reel on and off the field.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I'm not sure the guaranteed money owned to Bess is as much as people thought. Most of it, according to this (http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/davone-bess/) has already been paid. If we released him, we be on the hook for about $3M.

That being said, I'm not sure anything will happen to him. He has very little trade value after his performance, and whatever is truly going on with Bess, the FO may want to try one more year w/ him. He has more years (although nothing special IMO) of being somewhat productive than having a year like 2013.

Another factor to consider is the steady, reliable slot production of Josh Cooper. This guy DOES NOT drop the ball. I remember horrible passes from Weeden last year ( I think it may have even been Cooper's first NFL game) that he still was able to corral those passes. But there was a history between those two guys.

At this point, I think both of these guys are essentially the same type of receiver and there is really no point for both to be on a game day roster. Kinda like Cooper and Norwood last year.

1. Gordon
2. Little (for now but probably gone)
3. Bess/ Cooper (slot guy)
4. Travis Benjamin
5. Whoever....

I think a lot of potential decisions will be determined after the draft, unless there are certain clauses containing guaranteed money before then....sometimes some of these things kick in before the start of free agency. I don't have any of that info.

Also, it's worth noting that our team has a terrible track record with monitoring our players' social media interactions.

This season alone, we've had Bess and Gordon posting pictures of themselves smoking weed, Little and Gordon posting drunken videos of themselves in Miami, that Brian Tyms kid calling the Jameis Winston accuser a slut, Tank Carder tweeting homophobic slurs.

It's not the most pressing issue on our team, but in a way it does point to a lack of organizational leadership.

Is any of that recent, say in the last year or so?

Ok, Found this from Feb 2012:

http://www.youtube.com/v/YMCHIZ9QQ-c

Didn't see him in there, but it says he's there.

http://www.youtube.com/v/sHOaSovjCME

Didn't see him there either, but again, the title says he is

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...riving-records/

Not a video and not party type, it's the story of him and Gordon driving fast.

http://itiswhatitis.weei.com/sports/newe...aracter-player/

Not a video, but it's the story about how all the trouble started from 2011

http://bustedcoverage.com/2013/01/02/devin-brugman-dating-greg-little/

Pictures of Little at a party (I think the Browns Xmas Party last year with his girl friend,, yup, that's a real barn burner,, really partying it up there.,.LOL

After looking for about 15 minutes or so, I can't find any video of him partying. Not recent, not old, nothing.

So, either there is nothing recent, or I've lost all my skills at searching on the internet...LOL

If Bess gives Gordon any weed I want him to suffer an off the field ACL injury at the hands of some local goons.

But that is just me being a mean guy

If the guy wants to be a goof, smoke weed, and do a lousy job at work... go for it. I wish the coaches would have nipped this in the bud sooner and benched him early on.

At what point does his contract get voided? Cutting results in a cap hit. Waving a middle finger at the league by blatantly ignoring rules set by your association reps has to trigger a for-cause scenario.

I wonder if he is doing this just so he can get cut and he is actually clean? Probably not but just wondering.

I find it interesting that his cover page picture shows him in a Dolphins uniform still instead of the Browns. A whole season with a new team and couldn't update your cover Photo?
