The last hurrah. I will welcome this season's passing. "There is always next year" starts Monday. There is this matter of a game inbetwixt for us to get through. A pile of decisions need to be made, not all of them, like Hoyer, hinging on this game and how it gets played (or doesn't). Short of pounding THEM, early and often, I am interested in the Dawgtalkers and their takes on a game that has little to do with anything beyond the draft. If you were making roster decisions, especially in light of the crappy play we have seen lately with too little offense and wasted leads, what are you looking for in this mess? By position and/or by player, what are you judging and on the lookout for? No tomorrow. Sunday. Throw out all the jawbone and explanations from players and coaches, and a FO that seems as silently indifferent to this decline. The result of being coached up, of gaining experience and growth, of leadership from the elders, it has happened or it won't. I am sad that our trend of play has declined IMO. I was hoping to see improved defense, more offense, more sacks. Not lately. I will be watching LBs. I will also watch D line rushing. I will really watch receivers, if Campbell can find something other than checkdowns who happen to catch. Can't say I expect a bunch, but I am fully willing to be surprised. What will others look for? [All mentions of Little were intentional. Think he has done all he can to write himself off.]

I can only and will always root for the Browns to win once the game starts. I don't know how to turn that off. That said, from the rational perspective, we should play the rooks and others that need more experience and avoid injury to our valuable players. The fact it's Pittsburgh means little any longer. The rivalry is dead until we can muster a winning combination of players, coaches and game day planning. We don't have that winning combination today and to risk our good players seems an effort in futility. This is a perfect opportunity to take a look at some players in actual game play that we shouldn't pass up. Go rooks! Kick their butts!

Not much to look or even hope for.
Baker at RB. In two games he looks to be the best RB we've had this year, and maybe longer.
Cooper at WR. He is the guy I wanted for the slot/possession receiver at the beginning, I hoped Bess would fill this position. Cooper is not a great talent but he does catch the ball.
Grey at TE. He was supposed to play last week but didn't. Could be a #2 TE, he does seem to have some ball skills.
Gilkey at guard. He's young, and raw, and may not play. He also may be the best guard on the team, and sadly that's not much of a stretch.
McFadden at CB. He hasn't been horrible, and again sadly, that's a plus.
Poyer at whatever position in the secondary he's been playing, on D he has been close to horrible but decent at running back punts.
LB - I know some of the youngsters have been playing some, Hazel and Martin, but don't recall them making any plays; at all, good or bad.
Playcalling - Does Norv know what a run game is?
Campbell - can he play well enough to keep his job, or do we start next year with Hoyer's 3-4 games of experience and two rooks? Not sure I have a preference.
Team fire and desire - don't expect to see any.
Secure the #4 pick - Read three mocks over Christmas, all had us picking Bortles, one mentioned that there was an FO that thought he was the best QB in the draft. After Bridgewater, he may be, and that just might be good enough.

I think it's ridiculous to start Campbell when we have a QB we know nothing about, who is supposed to be developmental and needs game time experience. I imagine, however, that Campbell will get hurt during this game and we will see at least one of the backups. It's my hope that they decide to play Tanney over Weeden, just to see what he can do in the face of a pit D with something to play for.
Beyond that I expect to see nothing but an all out ass-whipping. Our D stinks against any team that gets the ball out quickly, we suddenly can't stop the run, the pass rush has all but disappeared so even if their POS QB does hang on to the ball, we won't be able to get to him or bring him down, and since Haden won't be there I expect us to get torched deep at every given opportunity.
On the other side of the ball, I expect Campbell to come out with no fire or luster, and if he does happen to get the ball to a receiver, they will most likely drop it. Our running game may rack up 70 or so ineffectual yards with some exciting running by Baker, but so what, he won't convert a third down or score from a distance and more than likely Chud will send in McGahee to do absolutely nothing in crucial situations and on key downs.
The rash of "concussions" does show me that some of the players are smarter than they look.
My stomach is upset already and I can't wait for it to be over. There's always next year? Right now I could give a rat's ass. Nothing I've seen since the bye week gives me any hope for any improvement any time soon. The Browns suck. Period. That is the culture that exists, and nothing good that happens is sustainable. On to the draft. BFD.

Judgement Day, haha... Judgement Day has passed, it started immediately after getting spanked by Cinci and losing playoff hopes. We are post-Apocalypse now.

Gray played some TE last week. He was overthrown when he was wide open on one bad play by Campbell.

QB....nothing much to see. I am not a big fan of seeing what Tanney has. You need to see more than a few plays. Plus, we will probably draft a QB next year, so let Tanney and Weeden battle it out for 3rd string. Actually, Gray is a tough fit at TE. I'd just make him the 3rd string QB. My thinking is if you are down to your 3rd guy, you are probably going to lose if you keep running the same O, so bring him in and option the ball over over the field. Maybe you can steal a win.
RB...Baker....let him run the ball 20 times. See if he is a guy we can count on. That would take some of the pressure off on drafting a RB all that early because we could really use some LB and DB upgrades in the 2nd/3rd round range.
OL...Gilkey....let him start. Same as with Baker. We need to see if he can be counted on because if not, we could use some serious improvement on the interior line, and I'd like to see that done fairly early in the draft rather than wait to hope some 6th rounder is going to be the answer.
WR...Keep the eyes on Cooper. Someone said he doesn't have much talent. Welker was probably looked at much the same way until he kept getting open and catching balls. Cooper might be our chains mover. The guy reminds me of Brian Brennen. Not the "most talented guy" except for the fact he got open and caught darn near everything tossed his way.
On Defense, there isn't much to see we already haven't...I suppose just keep watching McFadden and Poyer. Both are young and can only improve with game experience.
By tomorrow night we will know the draft order for us bottom feeders.

I don't disagree with this except for the part about Tanney. We should put him in there for no other reason than to see if he actually can handle NFL pressure. Even if we put him in there with both Campbell & Tanney taking snaps on alternate drives or even alternate plays. We have little to lose by seeing what the kid can do under a pressure situation.

Before this season my main adjective to describe Cameron was "lumbering".
Not saying that to disagree with you said about Grey or debate it. I trust what you saw. Your post just made me think of how I never would have predicted Camerons success. Maybe we will get lucky with Grey or others in that regard moving forward.

I've avoided this board in recent weeks because it's just so depressing. There's really just very little to like right now. I'm glad to say I've also avoided watching games the last few weeks. I'm again looking forward to the off-season season, our only true season. The only minor bummer is it looks to me like the colts are going to give us a pretty low 1st round pick this year. My only real, true, pure and concentrated wish is that we somehow, someway find a QB in this year's draft. Everything I'm reading is that this is actually a pretty spotty year for QB's with very little consensus. We're not in the Bridgewater sweepstatekes (going to Houston) and anyone else is at best a 50/50 bet. We just have to put our faith in the Lombardi & Co to pull out an ace.

I can tell you guys what will happen tomorrow.
Tomorrow I will go to the sports bar to meet my friend, eat bad bar food, and root for the browns. They will suck and by halftime I will be so disgusted I will leave. This happens every single time I go to the bar to watch them play.
Let it be the draft already.

I will say it is hard to make a case against that.
I still like the idea of Grey being the 3rd guy. Now, possibly we can use Tanney as the 2nd guy, but as i said, we will probably draft a QB this year. We get Hoyer back next year, and still have Campbell and Weeden.
So,,,,what do we do with all of these guys? Surely we will try to move Weeden. If he has any chance to be a player, it won't be here. Sometimes a player needs a new town, and Weeden is a classic example.
As for Tanney, I am fine with playing him though I don't really see the point. I don't think one game or the portion of one game is enough to really guage anything.

Everybody gets dirty before one Sunday. Give him a series or two (Tanney). What would you see in part of one game film that disrupts draft prep. Not much that I can imagine. Get the repeat offenders out of town. I will celebrate hits. I am up for bad bar food today.

This is why I learned to stay at home for most games unless dragged out by buds. Even when I am not buying tickets to games (I usually go when given tickets by the Boss or someone else) or Brown's merchandise - I am STILL wasting money lol.
What does it take to get a good burger or some other bar food these days, huh?

Yeah really. The sports bars around here all have notoriously bad food.
I wound up deciding not to go to the bar. Just can't deal with that any longer. I will listen to the game on the radio and do work.

Well, EveDawg, that makes you the big winner. I took Pepto at the bar and I left early in mid-4th quarter. Just a really unstirring day. If this was a gut check for anybody, I didn't see it.

I actually received a gift certificate to a sports bar here in Troy who has very good food as a birthday present for 50 dollars. In case a Browns game wasn't on TV.
So it would have been a freebie for me. I just couldn't stand the idea of spending it in a room full of upset, complaining and disappointed fans.
So I stayed home. I decided to use it next week to see one of the playoff games.
That may sound sad, but when you pretty much know you're going to take a beating at the end of yet another heart breaking season, I just couldn't see the point of it.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

When you posted this did you think we'd be spending time talking about who the next HC would be? I bet not. I bet you, like me probably thought we'd be talking about QB's, Receivers and other players we may be able to get in the draft or through FA. Wow, what a weird turn of events..

I thought I was sad as could be during yesterday's game. I was wrong. This is sadder. Poorly done IMO. It is ironic. I was looking for something positive was all. Now. . . . I am looking even harder.

I don't blame you. Use it when you can have some fun. I'll admit....Browns games haven't been fun events the past few years.....like maybe 10. Or at least the year Anderson blew up and we actually won some games.
I don't expect to see all wins, but I expect to see some. I went to 6 games this year and saw one win.....I think the same last year. At least in Andersons year we won 4 of 6 home games...maybe 5...that was fun. At least win some games at home to keep the home crowd happy.

I may have to eat these words but if I do, it will be because the Browns are winning.
Banner is a smart guy that is out smarting himself. Lombardi is still hiding from the fans and media. You know, if you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen. Why is he hiding?
Haslam, just makes me mad. He seems to damned arrogant and frankly, he should be more humble given his circumstances both with his primary business PFJ and the Browns.
Like I said, I may have to eat those words and I'll be happy to if it comes to that. I just have a feeling I'm more right than wrong.
They'll continue to suck and continue to blame coaching.
Remember, this is coming from a guy that sees the glass half full. What's the say?

This thread's title was oddly prophetic, and Chud's firing caught almost all of us off guard. So maybe this entry is the other bookend. I do not feel it was a good move, I do not feel it was fair, and I have cared less for it the more that I have read. The one thing that everyone in the FO is avoiding and should address IMO is something the Browns of my youth had was Loyalty. This FO has thrown it under the bus, and I think it might hurt us down the road for hires. The driver of the bad decisions usually wants desperately to have others ignore the bad inflicted, and bait and switch attention to some elusive and illusionary quality. I do not buy it for several reasons.
Fictions floated freely of late. We have a swell place offering bunches to great candidates. Look at the picks. Look at the cap. Look at our PBs (which count for new HCs, but not as progress in Chud's favor). We got the HC wrong, but we really wanted to get it right, and really we will next time. And the QB, and lots of the draft, too. This was a dream season with no bumps or hurdles. How could any coach help but shine in this environment? And show progress (often mentioned, never seen it spelled out yet). Which part was the firing offense? Like Baanner's double-secret probation, and Haslam's Folly. Lots of debate, I suppose, meaning one party eventually jawboned others into it, but who initially thought it was wrong.
Class and loyalty used to be something special. Anybody looking for a new conspiracy might consider Chud a placeholder duped from the outset. I really believe that McDaniels is already in and has been so we can be Patriots Lite. The rest of the search is just going through the motions for window dressing, NFL requirements, and to make it look like a "thorough and thoughtful" search was in place. Just like the one landed Chud who "got" Cleveland football. And had little known chance to address the mystery requirements of PART of the FO. The official line is that it is all good. Our FO is promising more of what they have failed to deliver. Hopefully OC and DC are just as out of the search as Chud. Right now we seem to have a FO selling and a fan base not buying.
The New Tradition continues.
