a trade between them and us could very well be a possibility then. Bridgewater hope is building!

I wonder if that "defensive" player they need is a d-linemen? If so, maybe we can even work a trade for one our d-linemen (prefer not Rubin/Taylor and Winn!) and ship them our first pick, keeping us in the first round still and moving up to acquire our quote/end quote "franchise QB"?

Yes, this should be a very interesting draft. Like a few have said, so many possibilities of ways to go. I would love to be able to just move one of our d-lineman and keep our second 1st rounder, but just my opinion (if I was Texans) I would rather request the second pick to draft a DL than take one of the Browns DL's.

If the Browns go that route, I'm sure we will probably be in a bidding war with a few teams.

But like you said…I hope that's all it would take, but not expecting that kind of luck.

Agreed Ytown, I may throw in a 2nd rounder for next year, depending of the circumstance of this offseason and combine.

I would toss in a 3rd, if they squeezed me on it. You absolutely have to get your guy in this draft.

I def would too, no hesitations... but I don't pay attention to Texans so not sure what holes they have to fill on the defense. We have an abundance of quality, young d-linemen. I don't even know what their new coach O'Brien will run in terms of defensive scheme, anyone?

Houston Chronicle today is saying Romeo Crennel is a serious candidate.

Crennell is the guy who brought Rubin to Cleveland while Savage was trumpeting Beau Bell. Man, what a waste that was.

Speaking of that BpG, that might actually be the way to go for them (taking a 3rd rounder over a pick for next year) considering they might lose Ben Tate this year, and with A. Foster deteriorating. I really didn't see much of Dennis Johnson the other backup, but they could use that 3rd for one of the young RB's to groom.

2 Questions for you guys:

1 - The Texans biggest deficiency on defense, imo, is DB. Would you trade Haden and the #4 pick? What about Haden and the Colts pick?

2 - What if we did make the trade with Houston (whatever the price) and select Manziel rather than Bridgewater with the #1overall pick?

I don't think I would do the Haden and #4 for the #1. But I would seriously consider Haden and #24(?) for the #1.

I think taking Manziel over Bridgewater would be a bad move IMO.

The thing I like about Bridgewater is he seems to sense the pressure coming and instinctively does just enough to avoid pressure without abandoning the play and resorting improvisation. Manziel does great making things happen but I worry how that will work in the NFL where players are much better.

Being at #4 with Clowney, Bridgewater, Carr, Bortles, Manziel, Watkins and Evans...we've no need to move up.

There's 4 QBs that can start in the NFL effectively, 2 wrs that will be wildly successful and a DE that is amazing...

Why move. We have holes...fill em, and if we by chance went back to the 4-3 then Clowney makes us even better...

I'll go further. We need help all over the roster. Even if these guys were there, I wouldn't be upset if we traded back.

Coincidentally, you left off Anthony Barr, LB from UCLA.

If there is a QB that this front office feels is head and shoulder above the rest, and is their starter, then they better do whatever it takes to get that guy.

If they sit and wait, and settle, and the guy they settle for flops, their heads are next on the chopping block.

Plus, not every incoming coach is not necessarily going to go all gaga over Manziel. Maybe the coach we hire doesn't feel that eh fits, and maybe he wants a guy like Bridgewater , if possible. You have to get your coach the guy he prefers if you can.

This tream needs a great QB, and if the front office feels that there is a great QB available, they better go get him if they can.

I agree. To be honest, I take Watkins at #4 regardless...I've been high on him all season, and tonight's performance did nothing to tarnish that (I know people will say you don't take WR that high, but he's another Julio Jones). None of the QBs though did anything to their stock, IMHO (maybe Manzeil, but I still don't view him as draftable). If Carr or Bortles fall into the teens, then trade the Colts pick and our 2nd rounder (works in the trade value chart to pick 12 if Cols stay at #26) to pick the QB. Or throw in next years 2nd as well and move up as high as 7 or 8. I'd target the Rams at 13 since they have 2 picks (though I'd not be surprised to see the Rams take him at #2). With 2 3rds and 2 4ths we can pick OG, RB, ILB, and CB or FS (or whatever our needs end up being after a new coach/system and FA).

I don't know. I am thinking he might be gone by 3. I trade up to #2. That way I get either Bridgewater or Manziel.

My 1st question was a serious one. Interested in everyone's opinion.

My second question was only semi-serious. I don't think anyone would take Manziel over Bridgewater except perhaps Lombardi (which is why the question wasn't a complete joke).

they would laugh. that's not even the "starting" price. it'd take 3 1st rounders + more.

If we trade up to #2, we might have our choice of Bridgewater and Manziel, because Bill O'Brien, the new Houston coach is reportedly a big fan of Blake Bortles. I think if we don't trade up to 2, someone else will, although it might be for Clowney.

It's really hard for me to imagine Bortles going ahead of Manziel and Bridgewater, regardless of who is drafting. Other than being big and running I don't see an attribute where he comes close to the other guys. Maybe close to Bridgewater in accuracy, but that's Teddy's weakest attribute in my opinion.

Houston won't accept the Haden and a first trade, but if they did, I would do it in a NY minute.

Manziel might go before Teddy, and it isn't just if we are drafting.

I still have Teddy as my number one guy. Manziel is now second. Bortles is third.

But again, I would not be surprised to see Manziel be picked first.

I really disagree w/those who are saying we should pass on a qb and/or trade down. I think we have to invest in a qb this year. I'm hoping it is either Bridgewater or Johnny Football.

only way you even consider moving Haden is if you think you CANT re-sign him next year.

If we win games this year, Haden stays...period. Keep him and sign him long term

Yes Haden made the Pro Bowl but how many games can you say he has won for us? Not ttry to think of games he lost with a big mistake? The Jacksonville game when he bites on the double move late and gives up the game winning TD. I seem to think there was another game this year. The Cincinnati game the other year when he forgot to cover Green. And that doesn't count the 4 games that he missed last year because of the suspension. And that is just off the top of my head.

Yes Haden is a good player but by no means a great player. And definitely not a shutdown corner. But perception around the league might be different than mine. He does have name recognition which tends to go a long way.

What do you think of staying put at #4 and taking which QB falls to 4 in Bridgewater, Manziel, or Bortles. Then trading the Indy pick and the 2nd rounder to get in front of the Steelers to select Sammy Watkins. Most mocks have the Steelers selecting Watkins.

Getting a QB and a weapon like Watkins in the 1st to go with Gordon and Cameron could really turn this offense around.

I have to disagree with your assesment of Haden.

Did he get beat on a decisive play against Jacksonville? Yes!

Did he lose that game? No!!!

All corners no matter who they are will get beat sometimes. The issue with Jacksonville was the defense should not have been put into that spot. The Browns dominated the play all game long. The 2 picks thrown by Weeden in Browns territory and the bad snap was the only reason the Jags even had a chance in that game. Take those 16 points away the game winning pass would not have happened.

Haden shut down some big name WR's this year. That is what a shutdown corner does. That is why he is in the pro bowl. His name should not be coming up in trade talks of any kind.

Got to root for the Chiefs today to improve the Indy pick in the draft. The further they go in the playoffs the worse that pick becomes.

I don't think you will see QB's go 1, 2, and 3 with Clowny and Matthews. A premiere pass rusher and Offensive Tackle will go very high also.

I actually think it is possible if we stay at 4 to have a choise between Manziel and Bortles.

If Houston takes Manziel I then could see a team trading up to Indy's spot to select Bridgewater. If Houston selects Bridgewater. The Rams may not get the trade offer they want and simply select Matthews. The Jags need a QB but seem to really like Clowney. Leaving the Browns a choise of Manziel or Bortles.

1st - I am not advocating trading Haden. Someone said that Houston would want a veteran thrown into a trade of the 1st pick and I think that if they traded with us then they would want Haden.

2nd - No he is not solely responsible for losing that game but if he makes that play … That is what a shutdown corner does. Haden is good but not a shutdown corner.

3rd - I am much stingier about using the term shutdown corner than most. SI hate how people throw that term around for any decent Cb. Some draftniks talk about getting a shutdown corner at the end of the 1st round. If a guy is truly a shutdown corner he goes top 5. To me a shutdown corner is a guy you put one on one with the opponents best receiver and that guy is effectively eliminated form the offensive game plan.

I can think of very few guys that I would consider shutdown corner. Definitely Deion Sanders. Derrell Revis when he was in prime form. Lester Hayes. I am hard pressed to think of any other guys that I would consider a shutdown corner.

I'm OK with whoever they take as long as it's an honest evaluation and not a panic we gotta have a QB pick. Washington would be better off with Cousins and the draft picks they paid for RG3.If a team is going to pay that kind of price they better get a Luck Manning or Brady and what are the odds?.As bad as things are with the Browns, it could be worse. Imagine finishing last and handing over the pick to another team. My admittedly worthless opinion is BPA (Today I like Watkins) first and Mettenberger later in the draft.

We could stay at 4 and get our QB. My worry is that other teams behind us move up and and the three top qbs are gone. Look at the teams right behind us. They need a qb. What if they trade w/St. Louis? What if we end up w/no viable QB options at QB? It's a tough call.

Watkins is dynamic and we have that flexibility, but I think we can get a good WR w/out moving up. I really like Beckham Jr. from LSU. Great hands, better route runner than Watkins. Return guy. Goes across the middle. Would be a perfect number 2.

Good thoughts on your part. We do have a lot of options because we have so much ammunition from the TRich trade as well as the two extra picks we got for exchanging picks w/two teams last year.

That is possible, but it would present (another) unique opportunity to trade down a few slots. There is more than 1 team looking for a LT (Matthews) or a DE in Clowney. Many ways we could go with that scenario...

Along this same vein of trade possibilities.......

Since the new CBA was executed in mid-2011 there have been several trades in top ten, both up and down, particularly since the guaranteed money portion has gone down significantly

In 2012:
Redskins move up to take RG3.
Browns move up to take Richardson.
Jaguars move up to take Blackmon.
Cowboys move up to take Claiborne.

In 2013:
Dolphins move up to take Jordan.
Rams move up to take Austin.

So, 6 out of 20 picks had movement...who knows how much back room conversations went on. Of those six trades, 4 were in the top 5.

I know it is a relatively small sample size, but my point is that there could EASILY be a team that wants to move up and grab a player they want in the first few picks.

IF the front office really likes one of these QBs, I don't suggest being cute- do what is necessary to go get him. I know philosophically fans don't like trading up in the draft but we are seeing more of it in the past two years than we've seen in a long time. This team has talent, it just needs a QB.

If they think a player can be a game changer, particularly at QB, you can't hope he falls at 4, IMO. Both for the sake of these guys' jobs and the progression of this team becoming a winning franchise.

I personally see a ton of stories/rumors/smoke screens circling around the Browns and the #2 pick.

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I agree w/what you are saying 100%.

We need to draft a qb this year. Not just any qb, but a qb who is going to turn this franchise around.

I think there are two guys in this draft that fit that description. Teddy and Johnny Football. If we move up to number 2, we will get one of those two guys and it will be cheaper than moving up to number 1.

We will also block any attempt by other teams moving in front of us and subsequently losing out on one of our guys.

If the Browns feel that there is a franchise changing QB in this draft, then by damn, go get him.

I don't care if it costs us our entire draft. If the QB who changes the direction of this franchise is in this draft, and a team is willing to trade down to us. make the deal.

We need a QB. It's not a suggestion, or a "Gee. wouldn't it be nice?" ........ rather it is a matter of "If you want to turn this team into a winner, then you better find a franchise quality QB."

We have a lot of the other pieces in place. We took a chance on Weeden, and that didn't work. I'm OK with that. We found out, and are moving on. Just keep on plugging pieces in until you fnd the right one.

That said ...... if we have pick #22, draft a position other than QB ....... or trade down, or something ...... but by no means draft another QB at 22!

This is IMO, the key pick. I believe (as opposed to what McNair is stating publically) that Houston has no option but to take a QB at #1. I don't believe, as has been reported, that they want to focus on an "elite" defensive player...just smoke. St. Louis would shock me if thet took a QB at #2; more than likely they move down, possibly Matthews. The bidding war may be more for the #2 pick, than the #1...

Assuming we hire Mcdaniels and hire Pepper Johnson to keep the 3-4 this is my mock. It's not exactly what I want but my mocks try to be realistic.

Free Agency:

•Sign Legarette Blount and Brandon Spikes from New England

•Resign TJ Ward and Alex Mack

Draft:

1. Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
1. Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
2. Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
3. James Hurst, OT, UNC
3. Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
4. Jon Halapio, OG, Florida
4. Jaylen Watkins, CB Florida
5. Prince Shembo, OLB, Notre Dame
6. Trey Millard, FB, Oklahoma
7. Colt Lyeria, TE, Oregon
