This thread got dumb.
I wonder how many people actually watch the games? I wonder how many people just read articles and the posts of other people?
Manziel read defenses. He read coverages. He was accurate. He extended plays. He was clutch. He motivated his teammates.
What's this crap about calling players out? He did grab Evans, but look at the rest of the game. He was motivating them all game long. His teammates love him. That was so evident.
I get the feeling a lot of people are making things up w/out really having studied the guy.
I will be ecstatic if we land this guy.
He went after Evans but it really seemed like we hasn't putting him down, rather just trying to get him focused. I thought it was great.
The Browns need a player like that to come into this organization and say "FOLLOW ME!". They really do. Whether Manziel is that guy, and whether we even draft him, only time will tell.
I'd be excited. To be honest, I like the top 3 QB's, Bridgewater, Manziel, Bortles. I'm not blown away by Carr, but I feel like with Clowney there as well as a top shelf OT, we should be able to get one of those QB's. I don't think those 3 go 1-2-3.
It's up to our guys to determine if any of them are that much better, and to do whatever it is they have to do to secure that player. Trade if you have to. Just like I said about Richardson, get your guy. If you're wrong about him, you'll probably eventually get canned, but at least you got fired taking your guy instead of Brandon Weeden.

Nice post.
I agree and think that the Browns should move up to number two. Not quite as costly as moving to number one. And then we would be assured of getting either Teddy or Johnny Football.
I am worried about teams jumping us and nabbing the top three qbs if we stay at four. Besides, Bortles decision making bothered me in the bowl game.
I want either Teddy or Johnny Football. Move up to two. Make it happen.

I'd be ok with that. I'm definitely worried too about teams jumping us. Even more now that the draft was moved back to May. Lots of time.
When the RG3 stuff was going on, I had some worry about losing the future with draft picks. Right now I don't care as much. I think we (as a fanbase) value picks way too much. They're lotto tickets.
I say if you like one of these guys that much, do what you have to do to get him, and if you're right, nobody will care.
Also helps that we have that extra 1 this year.

Two is the spot. Then you settle on your 1A and 1B choices and be done with it. At that point you can start projecting out your other picks and possibilities.
We have 10 picks, but I hope we don't draft 10 players. My hope is we trade up several times and end up with maybe 5-6 players.
Also, what do you guys think about Jimmy Garoppolo? If we didn't go for one of the QBs early, I think he could be a very good 2nd round selection as a guy to sit behind Hoyer for a year or two. I think he will be a very good NFL QB.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Do you really think he would come in here telling people what to do on day one?
I don't
I have no way of knowing. I wasn't trying to imply that he would. But I really don't see too many question marks about the kid other than that one.
I have seen those that claim he seems like an "entitled rich kid". I have no way to know if there is really anything to back that up.
I watched him play in a few games and like what I saw. I posed the only question that I could come up with based on what I've heard regarding his attitude.
In no way to I wish to disregard the kid or his talent. I do believe however that "fire or it" as some people explain it really has little to do with emotion per say.
I believe that's about your play. Leading by example is what builds your team up. It's what gets them to believe in and follow a QB more than anything else.
I mean there's nothing wrong with the "rah, rah" factor, but unless you are producing to the level of being worthy of commanding respect, it has no real impact.
And I believe if you are playing at that level, a team will play its heart out for you. A team can see of you have the ability to take you on their shoulders and lead them. I believe they respond accordingly.
To me, the "it factor" is shown by your play, not on the sidelines. And I believe Johnny Football has 'it". I'm just not as sold as some seem to be about the sideline thing. I believe that's a 50/50 proposition at best.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

That competitiveness and desire to win cant be taught
I hate narratives like these. I guarantee guys like Teddy and Blake want to win just as badly as anyone.
That may be true... While everybody wants to win, not everybody is prepared to do what it takes to win, not everybody is capable of elevating everybody elses play enough to win... How many guys have come into the NFL in the last 15 years with similar measurables to Ray Lewis? I'm sure they all wanted to win but none of them had what Ray Lewis had as far as leading by example, motivating the players around him, doing the extra things it takes to win, etc... That's why Ray Lewis is one of the best ILB's to ever play and other guys like London Fletcher had very nice long careers and did some good things.... This has nothing to do with what kind of pro Manziel will be or any of the other QBs... but some guys have that extra thing that transcends their talent and puts them on another level... and it can't be taught.

just wanted to get down my thoughts on Manziel in here.
my chief concerns:
(1) Willingness to take a hit. It's a good thing to stand in the pocket and deliver a ball when it's needed (Bortles is very good at this as well), but Johnny takes more brutal hits than any QB in recent memory (Russell Wilson is the opposite. Manziel would do well to study how Wilson avoids the crushing hits when possible on runs and moving in the pocket).
*note - this should be coachable
(2) Bad Throw QB - alot of his play extensions ended with him throwing a ball up for grabs deep to Evans. Now, with Gordon, maybe that works here too? But, Manziel has alot of Favre in him when a play breaks down. Both the good (amazing, how'd he do that throws) as well as the bad (ridiculous, why'd he throw that INTs).
(3) Work Ethic - he likes to party, he has always been on top, and he's pretty dang conceited with everything. none of these precludes him from being a top NFL QB, but it is a concern. He has to be willing to buckle down and work his butt off more than he ever thought possible and become a great QB. All college QBs need to do this to make the transition, but there are known red flags with Johnny here. Maybe it's overblown by the media, but we've seen enough Vince Young, Leinart, Leaf guys not put in the full effort to at least be concerned.
Things I like about Johnny
(1) Gametime Focus - gametime focus is no issue with him. love that he is involved with his teammates and isn't a pouter (like Cutler, Rivers), but has shown both an ability to encourage (Evans in bowl game) and get after (OL in LSU game) his teammates when needed. And, they loved him for it. Alot of this is hard to tell about other QBs because the cameras don't follow their every step on the sidelines, but they sure did with Johnny.
(2) Pocket Mobility - always sensing pressure, always moving around the pocket, always keeping his eyes downfield. Gotta love that part of his game. Especially looking deep downfield rather than always looking for the dumpoff (do you hear that Campbell??).
Everything else would just be repeating the same for ANY quarterback making the transition. Can he hit a WR in stride running an inside slant against a NFL defense? Can he make the out-route laser pass to the far side of the field? Impossible to tell this from college tape because the game is just different.

Did any of you notice the difference between how the Browns played when Hoyer was our QB as compared to Weeden?
Yes, and it became much more apparent when Hoyer went down. I believe the majority were totally deflated at that moment...
FWIW, I still consider this to be the biggest fallacy that gets perpetuated around here. The "difference" was that we won. People don't say the same about Weeden and Campbell vs JAX and NE. Hell even WHEN we won vs BUF they dismissed it.
It's a fallacy. Someone tell me what was the difference between Weeden's game vs JAX and Hoyer's vy Minny? Both led the Browns to late 4th Qtr go ahead TDs after costing the D points with stupid INTs (and Hoyer did them in the 2nd half, not in the 1st like Weeden)? Honestly, WHAT was the difference?
And NO, I'm not making the point that Weeden is as good as Hoyer etc. It's not a comparison. Weeden has busted, no doubt, but Hoyer is getting WAY to much praise for stuff that he had absolutely no control over simply because we won those two games he started….

Well, there is the fact that we won... then there is the fact that Hoyer followed it up with a very solid performance against the only playoff team we beat all year... then there is the body of work, those 2+ games are all we have on Hoyer... Weeden has 17 other pretty bad showings to overcome before he is going to get credit for 1 decent game.... against one of the worst teams in the league.. that we didn't even win...

Here's a list of the past.............however many years of Heisman winners.
You do the math on the qb's. How many qb's are there that you would feel "good" with, vs. how many sucked in the nfl.
http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/heisman/heisman_trophy_winners.htm
If you just look at that chart, you'd have to believe you have a better chance of getting a productive player at RB more than QB.
I only saw a few QB's that made a REAL impact. Plunkett and Staubach are absolutly winners, Newton is doing well, Too soon to tell on RGIII, Carson Palmer had his day in the sun, Bradford is still in the game and has time to be the big gun everyone thought he'd be.
As for the last two winners, Manziel and WInston, of course, we'll just have to wait and see.
Speaking of which, has Manziel said if he's coming out or not?

I haven't seen him play, but Steve has and I respect his eye for talent. He's very good. Steve says that Garoppolo isn't very good at all. Very overrated. Maybe Steve will see this and give us his take????

I think the big difference is that in the past the skillset that players had to win a Heisman as a QB in college weren't always used in the NFL... they tried to change them... The new shift is to draft a QB and then tailor the offense to their strength. I look for a lot more Heisman QBs to have success going forward...
That said, I wouldn't draft a QB because he won the Heisman any more than I would draft him because he did NOT win the Heisman..

I only saw the one game with manzeil. He runs like a girl. He needs to tuck in those wings or a NFL LB will snap his arm off trying to strip the ball. That can be fixed.
My other concern would be his ego. College is very rah rah and easy peasy to compete in. The NFL is mostly brutal, how would he mentally cope with that.
Beyond that I liked what I saw.

The rah rah stuff works in the NFL if you can back it up. Otherwise, guys that fight in the trenches, go across the middle, etc... don't want to hear it, and I don't blame them.

There isn’t a guy who scares me more as a potential Cleveland Brown than Johnny Football. He’s an energy player with a brash personality at a position that will command leadership abilities at the next level. While guys like that have the ability to pump up and inspire a team, they also have the ability to rip it apart.
After the showboating he did in the Rice game, Tom Brady said of Manziel that it’s best he not act like a “turd” and Urlacher said he was being a “punk”. That’s what most veterans are going to think of the BS that Johnny pulls… that he’s an immature idiot. He has had (still has?) issues with alcohol and anger, has been arrested, has shoved/gotten into it with coaches, etc. and even his parents are worried about how he’s handling his fame. Understood that he’s young and it’s not like all of the stuff he does is abnormal for a 21 year old, but where does he go from here? Does he mature as he goes to the NFL or does he start buying into his celebrity even more? Will he put in the work or will he show up on Sundays only? The guy we take is going to be the face of our franchise and have a gigantic microscope on everything he does. Do we really want that to be Johnny Football?
The key is going to be how he adjusts… is he going to take that energy and passion that can clearly motivate an entire team and channel it into positive leadership like a guy like Ray Lewis did or is he going to self-destruct when he gets to an even bigger stage? What happens when he is faced with losing? The brash guys are always awesome to get a team pumped up when things are going well but will his energy turn negative when things are going poorly for more than just a handful of games? If he can channel his energy positively, the sky is the limit but that is a BIG if.
All that is without talking about his game which while I think can translate to the next level, is still somewhat uncertain. That makes him a super big risk to me. He could become a motivating superstar with an infectious swagger just as easily as he could become a team distraction and cancer. And we’re possibly going to give this guy Josh McDaniels as coach? The guy with a personality so “strong” he couldn’t get along with two of the brashest skill players in Denver and traded them both (Cutler/Marshall)?
High upside, high downside and a huge risk. I’m almost hoping someone takes him in front of us so we don’t have to figure it out for ourselves.
We're... we're good?

yes, that is the fear with him. that he just isn't mature enough to handle the NFL yet. it could mean that he pays some dividends for his 2nd team after being taught some humility by the NFL (ala Cutler) or that he washes out of the league from it (ala VY or Ryan Leaf). The best case scenario is that he harnesses it, gets through the rough patches and has a good career (ala Rivers).
Just using those guys as examples of known maturity issue guys when they first entered the league. Could substitute plenty of other names.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2014/story/_/id/10262570/johnny-manziel-declares-2014-nfl-draftNot sure if this has been posted elsewhere. Johnny Manziel will enter the 2014 NFL draft, forgoing his final two seasons of eligibility at Texas A&M, ESPN has confirmed. [+] EnlargeJohnny Manziel AP Photo/David J. PhillipJohnny Manziel has been widely projected as a first-round pick in this year's NFL draft. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner filed the official paperwork to declaring himself eligible for the draft on Wednesday. Manziel's decision was reported earlier Wednesday by NFL Network. Widely projected as a first-round draft selection, Manziel is coming off his second productive season as the Aggies' quarterback. He threw for 7,820 yards and 63 touchdowns while rushing for 2,169 yards and 30 more scores over his two-year career at Texas A&M. Manziel became the first freshman in college football history to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012, when he set the SEC single-season total offense record by accounting for 5,116 yards. Manziel also set Texas A&M's single-season record for passing yards (4,114) this season and finished 11 yards shy of becoming college football's first sophomore to account for 10,000 career yards. Multiple sources told ESPN.com's Darren Rovell on Tuesday that Manziel has chosen Select Sports Group out of Houston to be his contract agency and LRMR, the firm run by LeBron James' business partner Maverick Carter, to do his marketing, though it is unclear if he has signed with either firm. Once he does sign with an agency, he forfeits his remaining NCAA eligibility. The Kerrville (Texas) Tivy High product is rated as the No. 14 player on Mel Kiper Jr.'s Big Board, and Scouts Inc. ranks him as the 22nd-best player. ESPN College Football and NFL Draft Analyst Todd McShay projected Manziel to go fourth overall in the draft in his initial mock draft of the 2014 cycle.

so the big 3 are definitely coming out now.
it's going to be interesting times right after the super bowl.

No interest in him for me... hopefully the Texans are intrigued by him and are more open to take a "not an over the top" trade for us to move down and acquire Bridgewater!

Interesting little bit on ESPN about him... The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Manziel. I think I'd go the old system of getting him to sit for a year if possible (If Hoyer can be a decent starter) but this guy's on field leadership, competitiveness and playmaking are just that good. Plus, for a smaller QB, he's got a helluva arm on him. http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/81639/top-stats-to-know-manziels-nfl-profileWhat are the top stats to know with regard to how Johnny Manziel's stats rate in some key areas related to his NFL future? Improved Pocket Passing Manziel completed 73 percent of his passes from inside of the pocket this season, best among quarterbacks from BCS automatic-qualifier conferences (AQ conferences) and up four percentage points from last season. He completed at least 65 percent of his passes from inside of the pocket in every game but one this season. Downfield Success Manziel completed 48 percent of his passes thrown 25 yards or longer this season, up nine percentage points from last season and in the top 10 among AQ quarterbacks. Manziel Throws of 25+ yards 2012 2013 Comp pct 38.8% 47.7% TD-Int 5-2 7-1 Manziel had at least one such completion in every game that he started this season. In terms of comparisons to recent draft picks, among first round picks in 2011 and 2012, only Robert Griffin III had a higher completion percentage on passes of 25 yards or longer than Manziel in his final year of college. Griffin’s was a hair better -- 52 percent. Improvisation Skills Manziel had an AQ-high 589 rushing yards on scrambles this season, 95 more than any other AQ player. Since the start of last season … Texas A&M QBs - Selected in NFL Draft Year Player Team (Round) 2012 Ryan Tannehill MIA (1st) 2009 Stephen McGee DAL (4th) 2006 Reggie McNeal CIN (6th) 1992 Bucky Richardson HOU (8th) 1983 Gary Kubiak DEN (8th) * Since 1970 • Manziel has gained 1,393 yards and scored 15 touchdowns when scrambling, both of which rank best among AQ players. • Manziel has scrambled for 30 first downs on third down, 14 more than any other AQ player. • Manziel has completed 54 percent of his passes and is averaging 9.4 yards per attempt when forced to scramble out of the pocket. The AQ averages are 36 percent and 5.2 yards per attempt during that time. Manziel has 23 completions of 20 yards or longer in such situations, 13 more than any other AQ player. Making it count in tough situations Manziel has also excelled moving the chains with both his arm and his feet. Since the start of last season, he has the highest total QBR on third down and only Jordan Lynch has rushed for more yards on third down than Manziel. Manziel's 97.0 Total QBR and 53 percent first-down conversion rate in third-down situations among players active over both the last two seasons. Size A big concern about Manziel is his size. He is listed as 6-1, 210 pounds on Texas A&M’s roster. There are 12 active NFL quarterbacks listed as 6-1 or shorter and only four of them - Russell Wilson, Kellen Moore, Drew Brees and Case Keenum – are listed as weighting less than 210 pounds. Manziel’s small stature has not adversely impacted his ability to see the field. He has only had 12 of his 864 passes batted down at the line (1.4 percent). That is actually below the AQ average over the past two seasons (1.9 percent). Stat of the Day Manziel led the nation in opponent-adjusted QBR in 2012 (he finished a respectable sixth in 2013, and rates third-best over the last two seasons combined). That stat would be indicative of a reasonable chance of being an NFL starter. The three quarterbacks who finished No. 1 from 2009 to 2011 are among the NFL's best-- Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson.

So it basically says the size is equally an indicator of success and failure. Great.

I'm not real worried about the weight issue- Manziel is still young and will likely fill out a bit more. Height is height though.

All of Manziel's OL in college and many of the DL he faced were a lot bigger than him.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Everyone talks about how Wilson is a bit bulkier than Manziel, but Wilson gets away with it, because he's smart and knows when to slide and get out of bounds.
Johnny is going to have to learn that, wherever he goes. The coaches will pound that info into his head until he gets it. Or he ends up in 3 pieces.

Manziel will be pretty good until he gets a few hits from Pro LBs. Then what do we have?...Ken Dorsey?
Every year it's the same arguments about the same types of players.. only the names change.. it was RGIII, it was Russel Wilson, it's Bridgewater (who weighs less than Manziel)... We could take a big strong guy with a canon for an arm like Jamarcus Russel.. because those work out...
I don't have the answer but John Elway, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Andrew Lucks don't come out every year.. or every other year.. or every third year.. and when they do, there is a better than average chance we aren't going to be the ones there to take them.. for whatever reason, we don't have the same fortune the Colts do.. So we have to pick a QB and give it a shot.. Manziel has his positives, so do Bridgewater and Bortles and McCarron... We need to pick one, find a coach that is willing to try to make an offense that fits him, coach him up in his weaknesses and roll with it... if it doesn't work, we will try again..

That's nice as long as he doesn't wear the brown and orange .That inner tube he wears around his middle would make him look fat in a Browns jersey. I'm thinking it would go great with Steeler yellow. Kinda like a rubber duckie. Everybody likes rubber duckies.

Well, the QB right now who I think has "it" more than any other is Andrew Luck.
He can play like absolute crap ...... his team can play badly ...... they can fall way behind ...... and yet he never gives up, and he always believes they can win. (as demonstrated in the playoff game against the Chiefs) That isn't his 1st comeback win, or even his 1st huge comeback win.
He has "it" in spades. His team believes in him completely. I bet that his teammates would have been more surprised if they hadn't made a huge comeback t win that they were that they did.
He has all of the structural basics you want in a QB. He has all of the physical talent. He has the mental toughness and intelligence. He has leadership. However, then he also has that extra something that comes out in times of heaviest pressure. He doesn't break, he gets stronger. He is a winner.
I think that Russell Wilson has that same "it". The Seahawks are never out of a game, no matter the score, or the circumstances. His team believes in him without a second thought. They absolutely believe that he can lead them to a win no matter what has happened, or what the circumstances.
Man, what a great draft that was. What a shame that we wound up with a guy who won't be here next year, while 2 other teams absolutely have their franchise QN, the Redskins are fairly certain they do, and the Dolphins have a guy who might develop. At least he still has hope. We are starting over yet again.
*Sigh*

The only thing that sucked more than Afghanistan was this season...
Dude, that is some sig. Funny.
Reminds me of a line from Modern Family. Jay was looking back to a time where he and his son worked on some do-it-yourself project. He said something like "That was my Vietnam. And I was in Vietnam."
If you're back, welcome home.

I really want Manziel. Would settle for Bortles if Manziel is not there. No trade up.

And if Teddy, Johnny and Manziel go 123? THen what? May or may not happen but if you plan on not trading up then you need to have a plan in place in the event that it does.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

That is my biggest concern, because there are teams that need qbs right behind us.
