Every thread has other players who are possibilities for picks pop up in conversation. At minimum these positions deserve their own thread. The positions I speak of include OL, WR, RB, FS, ILB mostly but if you have a good feeling on a guy at another position tell us why. Depth is never a bad thing.

Disregarding speculation of trading, I want to use this thread to discuss the other positions of need outside of QB and the prospects who could fill those needs specifically through the draft. We all know the free agents so lets leave them out of this.

Lets keep this information based meaning back your opinion. This would be a good thread to keep going for a while I think. Links to tape would also be great. So who does everyone like?

I'll keep this fairly open but 2 guys I like right now are Odell Beckham WR LSU and Yawin Smallwood LB UConn.

Smallwood is a 3rd round LB. Great size at 6'4 240. Best fit as a 43 Sam or 34 SILB I think. He is a natural at shedding blocks, great downhill thumper, instinctual at interrupting passing lanes. Reminds me of Manny Lawson.

Smallwood vs Michigan

Odell is projected to go in the 2nd. 6'0 190 4.3 speed and great leaping ability. Parents were both collegiate stars at LSU. I really think this kid could be the best WR in the draft skill wise. He was a top recruit out of HS but didn't blossom as soon as hoped. If he shows GMs at the combine interviews that hes committed his stock will rise. I see a Percy Harvin clone who can attack the ball in the air and bring it down.

i like Sammy Watkins from Clemson.

i think he should amazing versatility all season, and especially in the biggest game against OSU.

i like Tre mason, RB, auburn. i'm not sure if he is coming out this year, i guess we'll find out after the BCS nat. title game. but he has good speed and hits the hole hard, and shows patience foe blocks to develop. decent hands. his pass protection needs some work.

i think if we stay at #4, and one of the Qb's we target falls to us, we could use the #21 or so pick from the colts on a WR, if watkins falls that far, or a guard, but i haven't paid attention to OLine play too much in college.

6'4 4.3, but he does have the Tayshaun Prince body frame that's going to be hard when adding weight or muscle.

He's not a solid run blocker by any means, his routes are sloppy and he catches with his body too much. But all of those can be corrected if given the proper coaching. He's a project, but don't get ideas of Carlton Mitchell though, because he does show extreme talent.

I like Odell Beckham Jr. as a WR. Great hands. Superb route runner. Very good speed. Excellent returner. Should be available at the top of round two.

Gabe Jackson, the OG from Mississippi State is another guy I like. We need a road grader and he fits the bill. I think he plays from day one. He is not sensational, but he will get the job done. You win w/guys like that.

I like Marion Grice from AZ St in the third or fourth round. He rushed for over five yards a carry this year and had over 50 catches.

I also like EJ Gaines, who is a cb from Mizzou. He is pretty athletic and has good ball skills.

Forgot these guys:

Shayne Skov and Yawin Smallwood.

The former is a very active ILBer from Stanford. He is all over the field. Very heady guy in the mold of Kuechly from the Panthers, although not quite as athletic. This guy makes tackles and is smart.

Smallwood is from Connecticut and is a solid tackler who also excels in pass coverage. He would be a good fit if we stick w/the 3-4.

Biggest issue I had with Skov was he actually plays like DQ. I suppose that isn't a bad thing. Shouldn't have disregarded him just for a different skillset.

What is your opinion on our own Schwartz? Would he benefit from a move to OG? I ask because it is a great year for OT should we opt for that over an OG. I am particularly fond of the potential of Kouandjio. A great RT would go along way in disabling the pass rush if Schwartz was moved down.

Given his frame I was actually impressed with how well he sealed off his assignment in the run game. Pretty quick for a long guy too. I expected more of a long stride like Josh. Not a bad option for a late round flier.

I think the biggest problem with Schwartz is that he plays next to abysmal guards. I think that a new guard who knows what he's doing will help Schwartz a lot.

RB is usually the last position I look at before the draft. If you have any videos you'd suggest showcase his strengths and weakness I'd love to look. I have heard all too much about him. Also with RBs going so much later these days where is he expected to go?

I don't know if you remember, but I wrote one of my player profiles on the old board about Schwartz. I had him as a late 3rd to mid 4th round choice.

I don't see him as a guard. Not powerful enough, especially at RG. I think he is a RT. I thought he was a project when he came out. Said he needed a couple of years to work on his technique and to bulk up to face the bigger DEs on that side.

I really thought he regressed this year, although in retrospect, part of it could be Norv's offense which puts incredible pressure on the OL. Look at San Diego's OL last year. Probably the worst in the NFL. They gave up 49 sacks last year. They improved that total by 19 this year.

I would keep him around. Hopefully he will improve under a new scheme. Not sure if the FO likes him, though. His status is iffy right now.

I like players who I feel could be difference makers at their positions. Some of these players have already been mentioned but I wanted to point them out again because I have been following them closely after watching them play this year.

Sammy Watkins WR Clemson - Fast and Strong. YAC ability is freakish. Lacks overall size to be a true #1 in the NFL but would be a differnece maker as a teams #2.

Darquis Dennard CB Michigan State - Relishs the role of shut down corner. He has the mentality that great CB 's have. He wants to be put on an island and excels.

Gabe Jackson OG Miss St - A true road grader that wins the one on one battles up front. Miss St ran many QB draws behind him this season. Point of attack player.

Ryan Shazier LB Ohio St - He fits the mold of the new 3-4 middle linebacker in pass happy NFL. He can play the run but he has the speed and quickness to run with backs out of the backfield.

Yeah I was your primary opposition on the other board before Schwartz was drafted. I thought he was a 2nd rounder who could start right away but never be a star. I still like him very much. His intelligence and will should see him hit his highest potential but physically he's limited. Those true freaks will always get the best of him whether power or speed. That's why I thought maybe between Joe and Mack he could settle if we chose to invest in an Elite RT.

I must admit I like the idea Carolina had with their LT. Gross played for years as the leagues best RT only to switch to RT when asked. I think having true bookends adds a lot of value to both positions.

Question. I heard rumbles that he really didn't grade out as badly as some thought compared to other RTs but the position itself saw a dip. Anyone remember that? I want to say it was from a stats site like PFF. I don't know how to access that info.

If we are going after a QB, Watkins is a pipe dream. He will go too high in the draft to be a number 2 WR.

Obviously, I agree w/you about Jackson, as I mentioned him earlier.

Dennard is excellent. I was going to mention him and forgot. Good call. You are nuts when you evaluate our FO, but you make a lot of great observations in regards to evaluating players. I remember a qb thread on the other board where you absolutely nailed it. Dennard is an up in your face cb who is very physical. He challenges WRs on every play and comes up strong in run support. Any idea where he will be drafted? Second round?

Shzier? I love Ohio State, but I think he is too light in the pants to play ILBer in the NFL.

If we go to a 43 I would love to see Shazier fill the Will spot. I think he's perfect for that. Majorly against Watkins for where he's slated but I will be checking those 2 now.

Not sure about the grade, but I wouldn't trust that site. They had Hughes as our best defensive lineman and Ward as a stud.

I think Schwartz struggled all on his own. Yes, Lava stunk, but Schwartz had his own issues. We often used TEs and RBs on the same play to help him. The problem would have been much more recognizable if it weren't for us having Joe T on the other side. We never give him help. Imagine if we had an average LT. Do you remember when we had Verba? He wasn't horrible like many said he was, but he needed help. Joe doesn't. This allowed us to give Schwartz a ton of help.

Again, I wouldn't give up on him, but he needs to improve. I have to look at like this. I had him as a 3rd to 4th rounder who needed a couple of years to develop. Well, it's been a couple of years and I should ignore the second round reach and see if he can grow into the job. I do think he needs to get stronger, though.

He's looking like the first running back taken. He's absolutely destroyed everyone at Auburn this year with help of the option. There are system QB's, but also system running backs, and he is one. That said, he's also a really good workhorse back.

Marion Grice (Arizona State), Raijon Neal (Tennessee), and Charles Simm(WVU) look like day 3 jack of all trade backs. You also have your late day Sproles-esque speeders in D'Anthony Thomas (Oregon) and Dri Archer (Kent State). Then you have your prototypical strong men backs like Andre Williams (Boston College), James Wilder Jr.(FSU), Glasco Martin(Baylor), Alfred Bleu(LSU), and Kenny Hilliard (LSU).

After that you have the D2/Trouble players like Isiah Crowell (Georgia then Alabama State), Michael Dyer (Auburn then Louisville), and Jerick McKinnon (Georgia Southern QB). They're all rather interesting, but I think Jerick McKinnon is the most. He played QB for Georgia Southern, but they run the triple option which is code for "We don't have that much talent, but the talent we have we'll play at QB" and he's looked very good while doing it.

Dennard is projected to be a 1sr rounder around pick 20 somewhere at this time. Close enough to our Indy pick to keep a close eye on.

I agree Watkins is a pipe dream because we need to go QB. Hopefully Manziel. I just like his game and would love to see him opposite Gordon.

I think the ILB position is changing. The thumper ILB is soon to be a position of the past. Kinda like RB has lost its luster. Look at Denver' linebacker Danny Trevathon. He is a smaller but quick and fast ILB that is used mainly as the backer who covers backs and tight ends. I think the game is changing and Shazier fits that mold. Trevathon played OLB at Kentucky and was about the same size as Shazier coming out of college.

I'll leave the Ward comment alone as I hope everyone else will haha. Although I do think Hughes was outstanding this year. I definitely saw him take a step ahead of Winn.

Anyways to the goods. I hope he does get stronger. As I argued for days about on another thread how good Schwartz gets ultimately tells the tale for the OL. There are other factors but if he doesn't improve defenses can maneuver talent away from Joe and right at our weak points. If Schwartz learns to hold his own defenses will have to get a lot more creative.

How does everyone rate the RG's this year? It would seem Lava will not return so I expect a RG to be taken in the first 3 rounds. I was a huge advocate for Larry Warford and we all saw that turn out. I'm hoping this week to nail down who I like most.

Schwartz will have his hands full battling Chris Faulk if he is fully recovered to keep his position. Faulk is a big strong run blocking Tackle. He could easily be our RT next season. He had a 2nd round grade last year before being injured in the bowl game.

I don't care if they leave the Ward comment alone. The guy is overrated and I hope we don't sign him if he wants big dollars. I was watching Eric Berry this weekend and what a difference. He actually covers TEs and RBs. No way I give Ward top safety money.

Day of the Dawg and I already mentioned Gabe Jackson as an excellent RG. You should look him up. Very strong guy. Not sensational. Just a plug in type of guy. Worthwhile pick.

i think he might go in the lower half of the 2nd round, unless he bombs it on combine day. imo, he could also be picked up in the 3rd round, his hands are decent, not at all great. but his vision, ability to break tackles and has very good burst at the LOS. i think maybe the 2nd as he MIGHT be one of the higher graded RB's this year.

RBs I Like:

Sankey - Washington
Seastrunk - Baylor
Hyde - Ohio State
West - Towson
Wilder, Jr. - FSU
Muema - San Diego St

RBs I don't like (Compared to where they're projected to get drafted):

Carey - Arizona {TR 2.0 -- needs a lot of help at the LOS, but can beat people with power and moves in open field. Doesn't have breakaway speed.}
Williams - Boston College {pure power back, no moves, gets what his OL gives him}
Johnson - UCF {too big of a target, doesn't create yards on his own, fumble issues even before bowl game}

Agree on the RG play. His worst games were with Cousins next to him. That and he had trouble adjusting to Norv's system, which had the deepest QB drop backs in the entire NFL, which makes a OT's game much harder. It was night and day compared to Shurmur's old school "not to lose" WCO. I think it would be stupid trying to replace what does not need to be fixed, as Schwartz played much better in the 2nd half of the season.
I find it really hypocritical that some want to replace Schwartz after two season where overall he has been pretty decent. Hypocritical, because most of those voices beg for time with regards to Mingo, who had a much worse rookie season than Schwartz. Both were up and down and both deserve more time. Enough with the knee jerk. We DO need a OG though.

I think putting Schwartz at OG as some have suggested would be a mistake. I see Schwartz and I see a fringe LT doing his best at RT. Frankly I wouldn't mind if we drafted a real RT in the mid rounds and kept Schwartz as a valuable swing OT, primary backup for both sides.

Oh yeah, and at least 1 new guard. JMO.

i dunno if i could agree with that DJ.

there were a lot of one on one situations Schwartz had with DE's, and was flat out getting beaten in pass protection, and he still doesn't get push at the LOS on run plays, along with the rest of the OL.

i can agree that we maybe give him another shot with an actual good guard to play beside, but he still has to beat his individual matchups.

Haven't watched a lot, little free time right now….but from what I saw, a couple of underrated specs I liked:

FS T.Brooks - FSU
CB EJ Gaines - Mizzou

Two guys who I think are overrated are OLB Van Noy (looks like a situational player to me, elite one at that, but still. Reminds me of Mingo) and FS Haha. Barr I consider also very overrated, especially as a 3-4 OLB. Read a report comparing him to Kiwanuka and thought it was fitting. Could become a great 43 DE though.

Big WR Evans, CB Dennard and CB Verrett fan too.

Good thing this is shaping up to be a good WR class, as we could need as much as 3 new WRs on the roster next season and our stud WR is one strike away. Bess and Little are not reliable at this point, so we need a new #2, new slot and insurance #1. That's why I prefer Evans over Watkins if we somehow don't (or can't) go QB, as he fills two of those 3 WR needs. I prefer one solid FA acquisition + a top 50 pick and another 3rd day pick at the position.

Schwartz was our 3rd best OL imho the past two seasons. Of course, the drop off from JT/Mack to him was significant, but that's not who he has to be compared to.

Board evaluation of Schwartz is starting to remind me of Ward's after a couple of seasons into his career. Compare him to other RTs, not LTs. RT-play around the league is down, there are multiple reasons for it (LT play is getting better, DC get more creative attacking the weaker RT spot).

It's also contradictory to say it's a passing league and then still expect an "old school" RT, who's a mauler. Positions evolve. Look at QB and TE, same goes for RT.

I know I will probably get lambasted for typing this out, but when I saw the NO-Philly game and how easily the Saints were able to get push up the middle with de la Puente and Jahri Evans when they need it, reminded me that the lack of that mauling play by Mack and the OGs is a MUCH bigger problem for us than Schwartz. That's why the discussions about him remind me of Ward's. Dude's good compared to other's at his position and still there are some who want to see him replaced. My only explanation for this is, like with Ward, that some think he should be able to pass block like a LT and run block like a G. It's unfair. Look at a "mauling" RT like Loadholt, who I liked too back in the 2009 draft, but his pass blocking is worse than Schwartz'. Decide what kind of offense you want to run and THEN decide if Schwartz is a fit or not. In Norv's system he def was, he just had trouble adapting to the depth of drops and that extra second he had to hold his block compared to the WCO in his rookie season….on top of that he had that bum Cousins pretending to be a professional OL next to him. Schwartz had some REALLY good games down the stretch. He made PFF's team of the weeks 2 or 3 times. He's the least of our problems considering his age, production and development.

You want a mauler? Get one, or better two at OG and C...

You want luxury weapons. Denver has 4 receiving options and they are the highest scoring offense ever. Ravens won it all last year with only 3 consistent receiving threats. Jacoby Jones was NOT consistent. They had Torrey Smith, Anquan Boldin and Dennis Pitta. We have 2/3. We need a #2 WR.

I disagree on Schwartz being hurt by Norv's system. I think it just exposed what he doesn't do well, or perhaps I should say it revealed what he hasn't developed.

Or maybe we're saying the same thing.

I don't believe he should be judged by who played guard next to him, but rather on his own merit. After a rough start to his rookie season he seemed to pick up steam. This year he was beaten...repeatedly...by lesser players than Wake. On that note, I don't judge a player based on how well they did against elite talent. It's no crime to be beaten by Cameron Wake. However, Schwartz was beaten far too often by lesser players who either bull-rushed him or simply ran around him.

I'm not quite ready to say to he should be moved to guard, cut, or benched, but I would like to see the Browns spend a mid-rounder on a guy who needs a year on the bench before he'd be ready as insurance. Many players get exposed in their sophomore seasons. It's possible that happened to Schwartz. He could get the boot by the new regime and it wouldn't surprise me if he did, but I'd like to give him one last chance as long as there's a Plan-B.

As for the guards, I'm still of the same opinion I've had the last two seasons: They are inferior and need to be replaced. Grecko has been our best guard but his strength is his flexibility, not his playing ability. I'm glad he got an extension because he's valuable.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

I just meant we all know your opinion of Ward. MY point was to direct people away from hijacking the thread as it seems to be a hot topic and I am really liking the thread topic.

I'm watch Gabe now. Did a little pre reading and you have to love when a BIRMINGHAM newspaper says he's the best SEC OL.

For a big man I love how he resets his feet for better leverage as the play continues. Most plod or quit once they win. He wants more. Even in the NCAA you don't see big men turn their man as often as he does. Impressive feet over and over. Reminds me a Shawn Andrews a few years back. Major plus for him so far. I'll watch more later.

I could be happy with him in the 2nd though I think he could be had with a small dropback from 36.

That's a good way to put it. Insurance and potential disguised as depth is what good teams do. However would it be wise to say Faulk has the possibility to fulfill that without the need to use a mid round pick? I don't want to oversell the guy. Purely going off of hype before his injury really.

Another poster had spent some time watching Faulk...Steve, maybe...so he'd have more insight on the guy. I know he got injured which hurt his value, but if you're a truly good prospect and get hurt, you tend not to drop all the way down to UDFA. On the surface without seeing anything more than what he's done here, he seems like a long-shot to me.

I liked Faulk quite a bit pre-draft last year. But, he played OT at LSU and is an OG in the NFL, so there is alot of speculation on how much potential he has to make that move. Then, he also is now coming off an major injury, which adds to the risk.

Perhaps a 5th or later OT is in the cards then. We really don't have a capable backup.

I find it really hypocritical that some want to replace Schwartz after two season where overall he has been pretty decent. Hypocritical, because most of those voices beg for time with regards to Mingo, who had a much worse rookie season than Schwartz.

Do you ever stop?

There are so many threads where you can post that crap. This is one of the few threads where people are trying to talk football. We don't have to agree........but, will you please honor a good thread a stop w/your BS?

Good God!!!
