Figured I'd throw this up for those interested in chit-chatting about non-Brown team's post season moves. I'll start it off with this recent move - Dolphins part ways with their GM, Jeff Ireland (they've also axed offensive coordinator Mike Sherman): http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/07/jeff-ireland-out-in-miami/We know that Texans have hired O'Brien. That Tamp Bay has hired Lovie Smith for coaches. Titans fired Mike Munchak (sp?). Jim Schwartz axed in Detroit. Leslie Fazier axed by the Vikings, Shanahan axed by Washington. Any thoughts or predictions? I am guessing that Mike Shananhan will end up on one of the team's mentioned above...

I feel like Shanahan will take a year off and then comeback to coaching. Unless he decides he needs to coach to keep his son employed. Adam Schefter reported that the Vikings were very impressed with Todd Bowles and he is expected to make it their next round of interviews.

I'm guessing the same for Shanahan. He may be done for good.
I'm going to guess that Chud ends up in Detroit, or possibly Miami - in either case as OC.
I believe the Frazier is in Tampa already - if not I think he will be.

Miami also axed Ireland (GM) and Sherman (OC).
I really wanted Philbin/Sherman back when Holmgren hired Shurmur. Still likely a better combination, but the same unhappy ending there.

Well, I wonder how much Sherman convincing Ireland to draft Tannehill #8 overall played into this.

I also wonder what would have happened if we got Philbin/Sherman/Tannehill instead of Shurmur/Richardson/Weeden (maybe we draft Doug Martin with the Weeden pick?). Would Banner still have dismissed everybody and started anew?

jc Kind of shocking, to me anyway, but Raiders are keeping their coach Dennis Allen: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000...ders-head-coachPffffffffft, who keeps their coaches these days? Oh yeah, the teams that have winning records. I wouldn't know anything about that tho

The Raiders are in a horrible situation and it is a shock that they win any games at all. Allen should not be fired because Al Davis dug the team a Grand Canyon size hole.

yeah, they knew last year that it was their year to take their lumps and refresh their cap. They had something like $35 million in dead money last year.
Difference is, they didn't forget it at the end of the year.

They won more games than us with Terrelle Pryor/Matt McGloin at QB, lesser skill position players, an atrocious defense, and three teams in the division who went to the playoffs.
Why was this such an issue?

I believe the Raiders have even more dead money coming for the 2014 season.
People think we are in a bad spot. When Reggie McKenzie took over the Raiders they had no draft picks, no money, and no players.

J/C .......
I think that Allen actually did a solid job based on what he had to work with.

Jay Gruden to coach Redskins The Washington Redskins search for a new head coach, which once looked like it could take several weeks, ended Thursday when they agreed to hire Jay Gruden, a league source told ESPN. Gruden had been scheduled to interview for the Minnesota Vikings coaching vacancy on Thursday before he agreed to become the Redskins' coach. He is expected to be introduced by the Redskins on Thursday afternoon. Jay Gruden will replace Mike Shanahan as the Redskins' new head coach. He replaces Mike Shanahan, who was fired one day after the season ended. Gruden becomes the sixth coach hired by owner Dan Snyder in his 15 years; none have lasted more than four years. Gruden, the Cincinnati Bengals' offensive coordinator, interviewed with Washington on Wednesday, one day after meeting with Tennessee. He also had visits scheduled with Minnesota and Detroit. The Bengals plan to promote quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson to offensive coordinator with Gruden headed to the Redskins, a league source said. Gruden has deep ties to numerous members of the organization, which is why he was always considered one of the top favorites for the position. He worked as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive assistant for five seasons under general manager Bruce Allen, now the Redskins general manager. Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris worked with Gruden in Tampa; Redskins tight ends coach Sean McVay worked with Gruden for one year in Tampa and one year in the United Football League. Finally, Gruden served as the offensive coordinator for Jim Haslett in the UFL with the Florida Tuskers. McVay is expected to become Washington's offensive coordinator under Gruden, while Morris is a candidate to be named the defensive coordinator, according to league sources. Gruden spent the past three seasons as the Bengals' offensive coordinator, all of which ended with trips to the postseason. But the Bengals' offense fizzled in the playoffs, averaging 11 points in their three losses. But Gruden earned praise for his work with quarterback Andy Dalton, who threw for more than 3,000 yards in each of his first three seasons. In that time, the Bengals improved in points per game going from 18th to 12th to 6th. They were the NFL's No. 10th-ranked offense in total yards in 2013. Gruden also served two stints as head coach of the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League and was the Tuskers' head coach and general manager in 2010. Gruden's task is to restore sanity to a franchise that thought it had turned a corner last season, going 10-6 and capturing the NFC East. But their season fell apart in 2013 in part because of inconsistent play by quarterback Robert Griffin III III -- and a defense that wasn't good enough to offset these struggles. Griffin was benched for the final three games this past season and had a difficult relationship with Shanahan. Griffin did not always like how he was used, particularly when it came to running the zone read option -- and that was especially true after he injured his knee late in the 2012 season. But Griffin is only one year removed from a historic rookie season that saw him throw for 3,200 yards and run for 815 more. He threw 20 touchdown passes and ran for seven more. Gruden's brother, Jon, who is a former head coach of the Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, is currently a broadcaster for ESPN's "Monday Night Football." http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10267454/washington-redskins-hire-jay-gruden-coach

Bengals have resurrected themselves largely due to the stability of their defense, so their OC gets a HC job (largely due to prior working with guys in the FO). Gotta love the way of the NFL (well, really, any business).

Well .... there's one off the list.
I wonder who we're gonna wind up with? (and before anyone asks ,,,, I'm not asking in a mean way intended to hurt anyone's feelings .... I am just really curious)

i think we are going to end up with another HC, with no prior HC experience again, unless we land a college HC.
i just see it happening. and while i will throw my support around that guy 100 percent, it just seems that firing Chud is becoming more and more retarded everyday.

I didn't watch many Bengals games this year, but the ones I did, I don't remember feeling overly impressed with their offense.
Game 1 against us, they kept trying to throw deep even though that was killing them.
Game 2 against us, they didn't do anything spectacular.
Playoffs against SD, they ran some real head scratchers.
I certainly didn't see anything that lead me to think Gruden would be a great HC. Who knows.
I'll be more excited when Zimmer leaves Cinci. I think he's a good coach.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Game 2, their defense was their offense.
Or is it their offense was their defense?

I have never been a huge fan of Wisenhunt. (who were are interviewing, despite the team and Banner stating that we weren't looking at candidates we interviewed last year)
Wisenhunt wasn't hired because it was close between he and Chud, but Chud could deliver solid coordinators. Has Wisenhunt suddenly found great coordinators to bring with him?
Wisenhunt was good with Kurt Warner at QB. Who wouldn't be? Once he lost Warner, he wanted Kolb. (IIRC) Kolb, as we know, failed to impress.
He had a strong run game, but failed to develop any QB in his time in Arizona. Without Warner, his teams fell apart.

well, he might not be running him into harms way. which will probably help RG3.
i dunno if he is one of those innovator type of HC that will tailor the offense to RG3, but i have a feeling at the very least, RG3 won't be taking nearly as many hits as last season.

Most of the hits RGIII took, from my understanding, were on him. He doesn't have that huge frame like Big Ben does, he needs to learn to throw the ball away when their o-line collapses or he's holding it too long.
And it doesn't seem possible for him to learn how to slide, either. He can help his body more-so than any coach/scheme IMO.

The Redskins are such a trash organization. Literally the only thing they have gotten right in the past decade was getting RG III and they even messed that up. If Jay Grudens name was Jay Smith, there is not a chance in hell he gets a HC position. There are maybe 2 teams that are run more poorly than the Browns and the Redskins are one of them.

i feel you. but even still, that read option has got to be brutal. maybe gruden can get the OL to play better, or they address that in free agency.
whats crazy LB, the way that the NFC East is, they could very well be right in the playoffs next season. but you are correct, a lot of hits RG3 takes is on him, and the very least, slide!! don't pull a hoyer, though.

Valid point, the read offense is a college offense. Way to get someone killed in the NFL IMO. RGIII took 30 sacks his first year, and 38 sacks this year (and didn't even play a full-season). Jay got his work cut out for him, that's for sure! Scraping the read offense will likely help RGIII's uhh, longevity? Haha, but I agree 100% with ya on that... ... ya, did I say Jay has his hands full? lol

He also had Matt Leinart, who I never liked, but who was a 1st round pick ..... Tim Rattay, who was a backup, but with experience, to go along with Kevin Kolb, who they made a big trade for.
IIRC, he had some degree of control over the roster.
He inherited Warner and Leinart. he was brought in, to some degree, to develop Leinart so that they could have the progression of Warner to Leinart. That didn't work, so they went out and got Kevin Kolb, who also didn't work.
He had 6 years to work with, 3 with Warner, and 3 without. They got him what he wanted at QB. (Kolb) However, he wasn't able to develop anyone. He won with Warner, but that was it.
After Todd Haley was hired away from Arizona, Wisenhunt decided to be his own OC for a couple of years. He then hired Mile Miller to be his OC (under some pressure, IIRC) Miller was let go when Wisenhunt was fired, and he went on to "acclaim" with the Montreal Alouettes. Now he was a guy who worked under Wisenhunt for a long time, so they were well acquainted. He wasn't a well established guy with a history of success (as far as working with QBs) who you might want to work with a young QB.
I just don't know if his track record is one that goes along with us wanting a guy who can develop a young QB, and who will hire experienced, established, and respected coordinators.

To be honest about Leinart, no one after Wisenhunt developed him either.

JC Some updates: Bengals name Hue Jackson OC: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...ve-coordinator/Lovie Smith names 11 assistants: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/09/lovie-smith-names-11-new-assistants-including-son/ Quote:
New Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith used his year off to plan for his return to coaching, and it’s obviously paying off.
After having already named coordinators Leslie Frazier and Jeff Tedford, the Buccaneers announced the hiring of 11 more assistants Thursday.
The previously reported names include: Marcus Arroyo (quarterbacks), Joe Cullen (defensive line), Hardy Nickerson (linebackers), Kevin O’Dea (special teams coordinator) and Tim Spencer (running backs).
The new names announced along with those five were: Andrew Hayes-Stoker (wide receivers), Dave Kennedy (head strength and conditioning coach), Larry Marmie (senior defensive assistant), Mikal Smith (safeties), Ben Steele (offensive quality control) and Matt Wiegand (assistant offensive line).
Mikal Smith happens to be Smith’s son, which wasn’t mentioned in the team’s release.
...
Bunch of no names to me... except Cullen. Our defensive line was monsterous, but I would vision most would be with the kind of talent on there. You're talking Rubin, Winn, Taylor, Des Bryant and then you throw in the others, Hughes, Sanford, Kitchen and Armonty Bryant - with exception of Sanford they've all contributed and played. Good luck Joe, I was hoping to retain him.

do we like...have a surprise and already got a guy that is gonna take the job as soon as he is out the playoffs/win the superbowl?
and we are just going through the motions?
cause i have a feeling the lions are gonna get, at least initially, the better HC hire than we are.
