Oh ya! Best 3 days of the year...

Hell yeah! Where else are we going to hear "Browns are winners" without a "not" interjected into that sentence.

I eat it up. Love it all. It helps when you're teams good. But hurts because, well, they suck...

I usually just watch the first five picks (which 99% of the time is a Browns pick) and then I tune the draft out and pay attention to a tracker to see when the Browns draft next - then retune back in.

Although I value and think high on Mike Mayock and his views/opinions/etc - I can't listen to the man talk constantly for hours and hours. it makes me haha

This article should help clear a few things...

Browns Coaching Search Doing Little To Improve Team’s Image Problem By DARYL RUITER, 92.3 The Fan Browns Beat Reporter

Quote:

“There’s nothing that, and you all have every right to write it, that galls me more to read on Monday mornings, ‘Same old Browns.’ That’s not what we’re all about and that’s not what we came here for.” – Browns owner Jimmy Haslam on Dec. 30, 2013

The perception locally and nationally remains – the Cleveland Browns are a dysfunctional circus – hence another round of cheap shots lobbed at the team over the last 2 weeks since the firing of head coach Rob Chudzinski after just 1 year on the job.

Fair or not, perception is reality.

The Chudzinski firing and coaching search that has followed – led by Haslam, CEO Joe Banner and general manager Michael Lombardi – has done little to dispel it.

Aside from the head coach, Banner has been tabbed to do the talking for the team when the waters get rough allowing Lombardi to be rarely seen and heard from.

The “collaborative effort” narrative that was perpetuated throughout Berea when it came to personnel was more than just lip service or a way to dodge accountability within the front office.

The fact of the matter is that Chudzinski was given significant input on the personnel side in 2013.

Brandon Weeden winning the quarterback competition was completely Chudzinski’s and offensive coordinator Norv Turner’s call. Sources have told 92.3 The Fan that the front office preferred Brian Hoyer, who was relegated to throwing third string reps all offseason and during camp, but they supported Chudzinski’s decision.

Weeden rewarded Chud by laying eggs in his first 2 starts and a sprained thumb at Baltimore gave the Browns the perfect eject button. Hoyer piqued everybody’s interest with competent starts at Minnesota and vs. the Bengals before a torn ACL in the first quarter vs. the Bills ended his season. A pair of lousy starts following Hoyer’s injury earned Weeden the bench.

The Trent Richardson trade – Banner did not want to make the move without the blessing of Chudzinski, who along with Turner signed off on dealing the running back. So Banner proceeded to procure the Colts’ 2014 first round pick and bear the wrath of media and fans.

Hindsight being 20-20, the deal appears to be among the best that the franchise has made since returning in 1999.

Chudzinski and Turner suggested that Willis McGahee replace Richardson in the backfield and so the front office signed the 32-year old running back, who ran like he needed a walker or wheelchair to aid him.

Chudzinski continued to play McGahee over youngster Bobby Rainey and when the roster got tight after week 7, Chudzinski suggested cutting Rainey, who had carried just 13 times for 34 yards and so the front office agreed. Rainey went to Tampa Bay and exploded, including a pair of 100-yard games and 5 touchdowns, leaving fans directing anger towards Banner and Lombardi for letting him go.

Jason Campbell was reeling in December. Crushing last second losses to Jacksonville and New England were too much for the veteran to bear but there was no better option to start other than Weeden, and so Chudzinski stuck with Campbell.

Campbell and the Browns finished with a franchise worst to end a season 7-game losing streak.

The bottom line is that Chudzinski was a convenient scapegoat for an angry owner who expected better than a 4-12 season.

Losing 11 of 12 with a roster that boasted 5 Pro Bowlers and 5 AP All Pros combined with the personnel input that Chudzinski was given, Banner or Lombardi did not defend him or protest Haslam’s desire for a change.

Chudzinski was held accountable.

The problem now is the Browns plan to replace him has landed them in a ditch – or so it seems.

The latest coaching search, which has seen their presumptive favorite Josh McDaniels already turn them down – a la Chip Kelly a year ago – has forced them to give a third interview in 12 months to Ken Whisenhunt, who left their second meeting last January after bristling at the notion that the front office would have input regarding the coaching staff.

With all do respect to Adam Gase, Dan Quinn, and Ben McAdoo, they inspire as much hope amongst a desperate fan base as the apocalypse does regarding the future of humanity.

There apparently is not harmony in the personnel department either, which needs to be resolved – and soon.

Rumors of discord upstairs have spread like a forest fire since mid-December. Considering the amount of salary cap space and draft picks the team enters the offseason, beyond healthy debate, the personnel department must be on the same page when it comes to the direction of the team, or the coach won’t even matter.

If the use of this year’s assets produces the same results as they did in 2013, the personnel department will be next to be held accountable by an impatient Haslam, who came to town preaching the same mantra as the 6-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers – stability.

Stability didn’t last 12 months.

Very interesting notes. Glad to hear the FO and HC were at least interacting as they said they would. Too bad the decision made a year ago didn't pan out... though I think it was at least in part due to the lack of interest from qualified candidates. I don't think anything has happened to improve the candidate pool, sadly.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Kliff Kingsbury as a potential HC candidate.

Kingsbury on Manziel: 'I would take him with first pick' in NFL Draft

Kliff Kingsbury (born August 9, 1979) is an American football coach and former college and professional quarterback. He is currently the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders football program, where he played from 1998–2002.

Prior to being named head coach of the Red Raiders, Kingsbury was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Texas A&M Aggies, coaching Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel during the 2012 season. Kingsbury began his coaching career as an assistant with the Houston Cougars from 2008-2011.

Am I the only one who has difficulties believing this statement? I doubt if Norv levied to keep Trent, it wouldn't have made a difference and same goes with Chud... Lombardi, our so-called GM, probably doesn't even have much "say-so" or whatever.

Yes. Fozzy even should have warranted more game time/reps. Chud was even stupid enough to allow Norv to continue running sweeps/toss plays with Willis . I think this bad decision was on Chud more so than Banner/Lombardi.

This could have been the dagger to Chud. Playing Weeden was toxic to this team on so many levels and it was another year, another season where Brandon took something that wasn't earned. I'm sorry, but it literally pisses me off when coaches and etc sit up there and blab "we will put the best players on the field that gives us the best chance to win" and then you have people like Willis winning over reps that Rainey could have got. Have Weeden over Hoyer and to an extent, even Jason who played slightly better.

Although shocked Chud was fired at first, I don't believe he's coaching material. Especially if this article is true with as much power was granted to him for the personnel side of things.

I don't know if 'scapegoat' is the right word to use. You lack or fail to do your job, make good decisions - what do you expect to unfold? Again, especially if the personnel and etc input was granted to Chud. Let's face it, Bellicheck, Ryan, hell just about anyone really - would have canned Greg Little. What did Chud do? Denotes him for one game I believe it was. Total lack of leadership and quality decision making.

I would be a little surprised if Kingsbury would do that to TxTech. Doesn't mean he wouldn't leave there after only 1 year, but it would be disheartening to see him do it.

You mean people shouldn't apologize on how they feel or what they thought based on a couple of articles?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

that is what the man said.. So he hires Kingsbury, throws whatever he can to move to number 2 and takes Johnny Manziel.. wow,, yeah, that would be bold for sure..

Don't know if it's a good move, but sure is bold....LOL

Kingsbury has what, 10 years of playing experience between the NFL (as a back-up) and Canada, 2 years as a college OC and 1 year as HC... that's a solid resume.

I think your post is very fair and the question was a good one to ask. I've pretty much written Moby Dick below, sorry, I had a lot of thoughts. The great thing about this is that while writing it, I did a little research and found a few things I've read (on here or other sites) to be inconsistent. I've removed those from my response because I'm not convinced on what is accurate either way.

I read your entire post. It was very articulate and level-headed. I really like how politel you were while presenting your argument. You made valid points.

We disagree, but I love that type of debate. Nice job.

Vers, you love to point out all the good things this FO did...the TRich trade, trading up in this years draft, etc. You are 100% right. They've done some good things. They've also done some bad things. It has been reported that Banner and Lombardi have created a toxic environment in Berea filled with mistrust. Hell, Haslam has had to become so hands on because he is losing confidence in these guys. You have to look at the whole picture.

I don't love pointing them out, Rish. I point them out because the majority of posters refuse to acknowledge them and call these guys The Three Stooges and buffoons. The argument is so one-sided and unfair that I feel that someone has to add some balance to the discussion.

If you guys were praising everything they did like a bunch of you did w/H and H, then I would be pointing out the negative moves of this front office. It's called balance. It helps debate. It's how we learn. Some may not want to learn, but some do.

Gotta ask you something, Rish.........your negatives aren't really facts. They are rumors that have not been proven to be true. My positives all deal w/facts. Each and every one of them. I could add speculation. Banner has established a sense of accountability in the organization. Guys better learn that riding the Gravy Train is over and that will lead to more productive play. Heck Rish, I actually believe that, but I didn't post it because it isn't a documented fact. That toxic environment comment of yours is similar to what I just posted, but seen from eyes that wish to criticize.

I think people are overreacting to one move. How many of these guys were really in love w/Chud? Please. This FO might bomb, but it is way too early to tell.

nope. not bold. but bold doesn't mean smart, and this, imo, would be a smart hire.

Does it matter if it's bold? All I know is that Rivers played way better under Whisenhut this year than he did under Norv last year. The entire offense was much better.

Most of the stuff in this article isn't really new, is it?

- Everyone knows Chud/Norv wanted Weeden and the FO (Lombardi) wanted Hoyer. Heck, Lombardi
signed him and bashed the 2012 draft pick of Weeden. Nothing earth shattering here. Plus, Hoyer leap-frogging Campbell was a pretty obvious sign.

- Regarding the T-Rich trade....Banner initiated the deal (he even said it himself) and the HC said "OK". So what? Do you really think Banner would have not done the trade for a first round pick even if Chud said he wanted T-Rich to stay? IMO, I don't think so.

The only new info IMO is the Rainey/ McGahee stuff. I'm still not fully sold on Rainey. He could be another Jerome Harrison, but in this situation, if true, the FO was smart to sign Rainey and should have trumped Chud to keep him, which according to Reiter, they didn't. But I think they just searching for a Dion Lewis substitute to see what they style would look like when he came back....the reason for all the small back signings outside McGahee.

I have to agree with you on presenting facts. It is an effective way to debate. But even facts can be used to support whatever side your bias lays....Fact 1: The Cleveland Browns are 4-12 under Banner's watch. Fact 2: Haslam and Banner admitted they hired the wrong coach, then fired their hand picked guy. Both are facts and neither present the FO in a very positive light.

Here are some more facts: Fact 1: Tom Heckert drafted the WR that led the league in receiving yards this year. Fact 2: Tom Heckert drafted 3 players that made the All Pro team this year. Fact 3: Tom Heckert drafted 4 players that made the Pro Bowl this year.

My point is even facts can be picked through to support an opinion.

I try to preface my thoughts when not dealing in facts with "IMO" or "here's what I think". Sometimes I don't because I think it's pretty obvious it's an opinion.

Some things I have read I cannot personally verify. Its impossible for me to verify that the environment is toxic. So yes, its an opinion, but it was an opinion from an informed source. I still agree its an opinion, but how do we decide what we read in print is a fact or an opinion?

I think if all we did on here was debate concrete, completely verifiable facts...such as the Browns traded TRich for a 1st round pick....there wouldn't be much discussion at all.

I get what you are saying. Facts are important. I guess I would say there are positive and negative facts for this FO as well as previous ones.

True.

I don't know, man..........people are jumping on Marla's articles and every other negative article as proof that these guys are stooges and buffoons. This article comes out and they ignore it. Someone has to point that out. Things are too one-sided and I don't like one-sided arguments.

Heck, for all I know.....the FO and Haslam are incompetent. They haven't won a darn thing yet. I am defending them because I feel people are picking and choosing what to concentrate on and are being unfair. I also believe it is too early to deem them as failures.

Nothing more than that.

I am not arguing w/you. You have actually been a lot more level-headed about this situation than most.

That is a very good post. You provided facts to back up your argument. You were logical and rational.

I totally get what you are saying about using opinions. You're right.

Now..........I was not clear about that. My mistake. Not yours. I do believe we should offer opinions. I do believe in speculation. I do believe in making inferences. I do believe in drawing conclusions from certain facts and combining them w/life experiences. I love that stuff.

I was simply saying that when arguing about whether or not a group of guys are stooges and buffoons, it's a pretty slippery slope to use opinion in your argument. Does that make sense?

Let's take something we have both talked about. You said that Banner has created a toxic environment. I said he has established a culture of accountability. Do you see that we could be talking about the very same thing?

Let's say that a guy is benched or cut for poor performance. Did we create a toxic environment because players are fearing for their jobs or did we create an atmosphere of accountability because players know that they have to perform to get paid?

I think the conclusion can be swayed by one's preconceived notion---or opinion that was held before the event took place. Does that make sense?

Well.........even if it doesn't.........I like your post. You made some great points and you really made me think. I had to put some thought into how to reply to you because you made a very good argument. I like that. Keep it up.

Nice. I liked how you did some research before making your points. Again, we disagree on some things, but I respect your opinion on those matters. It was a much better post than the "buffoon" post.

I'd like to see you post more. We don't have to agree. Just bring intelligence and logic to the table.

We do that with every draft pick.... the day after the Draft.
Why should the guys drafting them be afforded anything different??

In a less tongue-in-cheek response - they perhaps can't be called failures, yet, but they sure can't be called a success, either. One could easily construct an argument to question whether the word "competent" could even be used.

The Richardson deal is about the only positive I can think of with these guys, and there's a pretty good chance that it is simply a matter of a blind squirrel finding a nut. Not too many positives besides that to look at. Most positives prior to now were the hiring of Chud, Norv, and Horton.... and that is suddenly now a negative.

I just listen to the words they use when searching for coaches and know that they aren't necessarily about what I'd like them to be about. Last year it was about "making a splash", this year it is "being bold". Last I checked, those were buzzwords used in marketing and not the sort of thing you say to describe your search for someone to hire. It smacks heavily of decision making being driven by popular opinion and buzz meters rather than a solid football plan to build a team. It stands to reason though - these aren't football people, they're numbers people.

I never said they should be called a success. I don't want people misinterpreting that. I understand why people think I love these guys. I defend them all the time. I get that.

However, I don't love them. I don't think they are successful. I am fairly certain I put that in my earlier post. For all I know, they might fail in grandiose proportions. I'm just carrying a the minority cross, and believe me, brother---------it's heavy.

The only thing I really believe is that it is too early to say one way or the other if they are going to be successful or if they are failures. That's all.

Understood, across the board.

I don't like or trust them, never have, nor will.
I think Banner is a power-hungry slime, and Lombardi is slightly lower (could anybody have a resume this bad and still hired and what not?).

In the end, regardless of current opinion, they will be judged by what they do here.... but until they actually do something to change minds, the ones like mine will be fairly set.

j/c...

Its just a very tough pill to swallow...Chud n Norv made all the bad judgments on QB...I can sort of think that Lombardi wanted his choice of Hoyer in there n not Weeden but everyone...well mostly Chud n Banner as Norv spoke here n there but I think he didn't wish to show dis respect to Chud as the HC...so he didn't say much and Lombardi...who knew what he was thinking about. Mostly Chud n Banner said several times that they would have to find out 2013 what investment they had in Weeden.

The other thing was it seemed Chud was rather excited when the decision was made to leap frog Campbell n give Hoyer the start.

Hard to say exactly what happenned and all the QB things were on Chud? I guess it was Chud who wanted Tanner? Rainey was all on Chud...actually he pulled his Groin in the Bills game??? or was it the next? was to miss a couple of games so they got fozzy n released Rainey....I don't know that is how I remembered it. Banner/Lombardi were just bowing to Chud?

I mean I'm sure some of it could very well be correct...but the main thing is WHO BUILT THIS?

The FO/OWNER DID...Mangini was fired after 2 season cause a new regime took over. Shurmur was fired 2 seasons mainly due to a new regime. Chud was fired after one season n it was their HIRE? Correcting a wrong? No continuity cause of a bad temper? I don't know which way is up.

Oh n by coincidence my account at Clevelandbrowns.com has been deleted...lol Since 2001 I've been a member there. I could care less about post counts and that stuff by I have no option to register cause I'm locked into the old account? But that is my fault cause I didn't agree with their actions

Things are too one-sided and I don't like one-sided arguments.

The information recently is one-sided because it's a by-product of what they FO has done.

They fired a head coach THEY hired after one year when they preached continuity and "getting it right". They've now created a culture where inside the NFL, there is mistrust with what our FO is doing. But hey, they could ultimately be right about CHUD... time will tell.

But to be fair to the stuff I know you liked:

It was one-sided when Haslem bought the team and Lerner was out. Everyone loved it.
It was one-sided when Chud was announced along-side his super coordinators in Norv and Ray. Everyone loved it.
It was one-sided when Hoyer won just two games against MIN and CIN. Everyone loved it.

My point is you don't like it being one-sided NOW because you have fully bought into to the new regime and the recent news goes against that grain and poster have responded to it. Sorry to say this, but you were doing just fine with "one-sided arguments" when it suited what you liked. You can say that you are skeptical about the FO and you will give them three years, etc, but most know you're rooting for them because they're the regime that booted Holmgren, Heckert, and Shurmur....the former regime that booted Mangini. You can call this BS or whatever, but I think you really hope for some sort of retribution or something. I'll just get that out in the air.

But anyways...it's one-sided now because it should be. They've messed up....royally. But conversely, it should be one-sided when they do the right thing, which I hope they do in the long run. If not, we'll have another reboot and posters and choose sides of what is too one-sided" or not.

You make it three, that's a yellow flag for "mobbing". It's unfair and unbalanced

j/c I'm so sick of this crap. I don't want to take another chance on an unproven college HC or a coordinator. Give me an ex-nfl coach that didn't stink up the place. This team (and my psyche) needs some stability. To me, Whisenhunt, Munchack or maybe even Shanahan would be more palatable than rolling the dice yet again. They can shove that "bold" crap where the sun don't shine.

Nice pull on that article..the circumstances behind this stuff I heard about two weeks , but it a lot of things being laid out.
The conflicting part is that the FO thought Chud would go along with what he wanted(which in some cases woud have been the better moves)..they had not expected him to e more of a presence or a wall then he was.
FYI...wanna know why there was no FB on the squad? After the TR and several games went by, Chud/Norv wanted them to get a FB..they were told to roll with Obi..
So..there's more but the fact is the FO was not backing Chud, and they put him on a island to sink or swim..the boat had too many holes.

But now things have turned ..U see candidates being interviewed or considered that might not have been had Banner just been looking.
Haslem has indeed interjected himself to the HC search via his confidents outside Berea.
He's getting a lot of advice and he's not happy how his team is being perceived throughout the league.
So it's Whisenhunt and Gase(more Banner) and possibly some more.
Some of the power is being stripped away and Haslem doesn't want another mess on his hands again..they have to get it right this time.

U guys may not want to hear it, but dude isn't too pleased on whart transpired this season and the fact they had to fire the guy they settled on.
Whiz wanted to have more than a say on the roster, he wanted to have control..I heard he said they had things setup to control a young coach...where they picked his assistants and the roster.
