All the inane sideline interviews tend to be different types of horrible.

"What were you thinking when that big play happened?" And the responses are nothing short of vanilla... "Well, I saw Receiver A and threw him the ball", "I wasn't thinking, I was reacting"

"Why are you losing the game?" The other team is scoring more points...

Aside from injury reports, I don't think there's anything more useless..

Remember when Rachel Nichols worked for ESPN and she'd give one of those 15 second reports mid-week for a big game? The reports consisted of her saying "well this guy said this about the other team" and then would follow up "and the guy on the other team said that they're gonna win"

Not joking.

Fun... I'll play... I hate the phrase:

"They backed into the playoffs."

No they didn't. They won enough games, maybe they won the right games to win a tie breaker..... whatever, they PLAYED their way into the playoffs.

great ones so far in this post!

the one that REALLY annoys me is "SEC SPEED!"

I don't know if its a cliche or not, but it annoys me

another annoying phrase is

"(insert name) hasn't thrown an interception in (down and yardage or whatever) all year" - then boom, interception

or

"(insert name) hasnt missed a FG from this range all year long" - then boom, missed

a CLICHE that annoys me is "flying around" when someone is talking about defense. i dont know why it annoys me, but it does every single time

This isn't cliché but it's annoying to watch. Why, whenever a WR makes a play, that he gets up, and unbuttons his chin strap?

I mean, you know, you still have to line up again in 15 seconds and strap the damn thing back on.

Noticed it watching Steve Smith, he does it a lot. DB's do it a ton too.

This isn't exactly a phrase either but when one team gets the ball and goes 3 and out and the other team gets the ball and goes 80 yards for a TD and they show a graphic that total offense is:

Team A 4 yards
Team B 80 yards

They've only had ONE POSSESSION!!!!!

I'm convinced the announcers are watching the game live, and the making their commentary to a delayed video feed. yesterday example : 3rd qtr IND vs NE announcer says : "We haven't seen much from Mathis today" and BOOM, Mathis drops Blount for a -1 loss seconds later.

It's pretty hilarious if you watch Al Michaels during SNF, it takes about a quarter and a half to figure out which side he's betting on. You can hear the slight angst in his voice when things don't go his way.

I love the guy that calls and says he watched the coach's tape. I know they have all 22 now, but it's still hilarious...

Also the guy who thinks a coach is terrible because of how he looks on the sidelines or in the press conference. Nevermind that Belichick looks the exact same as he did 20 years ago...

The absolute worst guy is the one that compares every coaching move with Mike Tomlin "do you think Mike Tomlin would have put up with that?".

Memo to sports talk callers: MIKE TOMLIN SUCKS. He's the most overrated coach in the league, and has road the coattails of Roethlisburger and LeBeau for years.

I really wonder if that guy would have a job if Holmes doesn't make that ridiculous catch in the Super Bowl. I really do.

I generally like Mike Mayock as an announcer but if the QB pats the ball a couple times and he says he was "burping the baby" one more time I might have to reach through the TV and.....

Or when he calls the pocket a cup...

Thats like in baseball when guys want to sound new school and say that so-and-so is "on the bump" tonight, instead "pitching. Speaking of baseball terms, one that migrated to football - "beast mode". I've heard it enough to last a lifetime.

Beast mode should never be used for a baseball player.

I've never felt cool enough to say "so and so is .300 at 'the dish'' like baseball guys do. So lame.

The best announcers really don't try and do anything crazy, and if they try to be different, they fit it in to the broadcast without forcing it.

The hockey announcers are by far the best broadcasters. For those of you who have NHL network, listen to Jim Hughson call a game on Hockey Night in America, he's one of the best.

When watching college: "We're going to be seeing that guy a lot on Sundays."

Someone on here had the sig "you don't have to win every game, just the next one."

I always thought that made no sense. That would mean you don't have to win the game you're currently playing. I would rather say "you don't have to win every game, just this one."

Nah, Jim annoys me. Maybe because he was the voice of a really bad EA NHL game I bought. I really have to turn the channel when he's calling a game.

I'm a BIG Mike Emrick fan. He could be calling a Panthers and Sabres game, I'd watch.

What ever happend to Gary Thorne? He used to be my favorite.

Back on topic..."That first down was sponsored by..." Not a cliche but I'm getting very sick of the constant ear and eye ad abuse I receive while watching the NFL. Kickoff, commercial, drive, "this 3rd down is sponsored by...", punt, commercial, drive with a TD, "this extra point is sponsored by..." commercial, kickoff, commercial, drive, etc.

This ACL injury is sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic...

You know that day is coming.

Gary Thorne still works for ESPN, therefore, he can't really do hockey. I think he still does the Frozen Four. He's also the TV guy for the Baltimore Orioles.

I was never a huge fan of his. Didn't hate him, but didn't see him as an "A-Team" type voice. I'd take Hughson over him any day. Doc Mike and Edzo are a great team too.

If you're ever bored, youtube Rick Jeanneret from Buffalo, he may be the best radio voice there is outside of Vin Scully.

Good topic.

I will say that most cliches are formulated from the truth. They are so true that they are repeated over and over and over again. No offense Jules, and those who said hers was the best, but if you ever played the game........you know that some teams are much more ready to play than other teams.

With that said, some of these bug me, probably because they were initiated by media members:

--"Playing not to lose" is a fan and media favorite. Pretty stinking ignorant statement.

--"The only thing the Prevent defense does is prevent you from winning." Perhaps the most ignorant statement of all time.

--"My 6 year old daughter can predict the plays." Never mind, this one is even dumber. You know, because the play is a run between the tackles, it is the
very same play as all the others. LOL

--"He can't make halftime adjustments." I yi yi yi.

--"There is no such thing as 'it.'" Yeah guys.........give me that big arm, lack of fire, and hollow head every day of the week. Wait, we already have Weeden. We're set for life. Who needs Johnny Football. He is just a cliche.

The saying "playing not to lose" is too inexact for my liking but I believe there is usually a solid point behind it. The reality is that coaches have long been too conservative from a game management perspective, and it seems like over the years it has gotten even worse as few of them have adjusted to better offenses/higher scoring in general.

It is kind of sad when reasonably intelligent people can intuitively come up with better solutions to common 4th and short situations (especially when losing), know that when you are down 8 and score a touchdown in the 4th quarter you should go for two, and coaches with 7 figure salaries can't figure it out or don't bother to implement it. And any game model or exhaustive analysis always sides with the casual fan in those situations.

I pretty much agree with the rest though... silly sayings and declarations thrown around too lightly by people who too often don't know much about what they are talking about. And I'm still waiting for someone who is so good at predicting plays that they can do it in real time, not proclaim they did after the fact.

Not getting on your case at all............it's all in fun, but what is the alternative? Should he "play to lose?" Just seems dumb to me.

I get the not getting too conservative thing. But, no one plays to lose. Well........at least I don't think so.

"Hey fellas, Steve in Parma here, first off, I played QB in High School and led the team to a state runner-up back in '76 so I know a thing or two about the game. So here's my take…."

Also, the Browns "Expert Caller Based on Longevity"

"Hey guys, Paul in Euclid, thanks for taking my call. Listen, I have been watching the Browns since I was kid. Dad took to me games back when Jim Brown was playing and I remember watching the '64 championship. So here's the thing, we gotta get……(followed by some ridiculous take, such as "we gotta hire Bernie as head coach or why aren't we interviewing Marty?")

Thoroughly entertaining.

Hmmm... I obviously read into your comment way more than I should have. I took it as somewhat of a dig at a fan questioning a coach's decision and obviously that's not what you meant. My bad.

It is a pretty stupid saying.

First the word EPIC is way over used to the point of being annoying, everything is EPIC now days,

"Will get'em next year" or "There is always next year" "We Battled" One never knows about the next hour other than next year, but yes those phrases are suppose to give hope....but they get old.

I really do get annoyed over coachs after game press confrences, mainly when they say, " Will get back in here tomorrow and work to get better and fix our mistakes" They say it week after week after week, I just wish one reporter would actually tell the coach, "Look coach you say every week your gonna work to get better and your clearing not getting better, maybe this is the best you can get, maybe what your doing weekly isnt the right thing to do, becuase your still making the same mistakes week 15 as you did week 1.

Really tired of hearing "we will work hard to get better, no S--T shirlock, But what are they suppose to say..

By definition, "playing not to lose" means the exact same thing as "playing to win".. I suppose you could consider a tie but that's a reach...

I agree that I never liked the saying "playing not to lose"... it really just means you aren't being as aggressive as the person thinks you should be..

if someone already added this, I apologize, but I find it SO IRRITATING when players and coaches and fans hold four fingers up in the air at the end of the third quarter, as if that's somehow giving you a jump on the other team for the fourth.

That's why they call it coachspeak. I understand why they have press conferences, but man are they boring.

That's why I usually shut off talk radio whenever they bring on a coach or player. You usually get nothing but them throwing clichés and coachspeak out there, and then plugging some stupid product....

Former players aren't bad, because they'll open up a little bit, but today's athlete is so terrified of having something come back on them.

I was watching an old Celtics game back in the Bird days, and right in the middle of a heated playoff series with the Hawks, Larry Legend flat out blasted the other team, before going out and dropping 44 on them. Nobody has stones like that any more. Everyone is afraid of reporters running back to you for a comment when you don't back it up. Who cares? Have fun with it. Pro athletes are so sensitive these days. Sack up.

I hope those callers never go away, comedic gold.

I love that every caller about the Browns has to start with "I've been watching the Browns my whole life" or some variation...

I love the guy that calls and thinks he's buddy buddy with the host, and gets run before he can really get his entire thought of.

Usually he rambles on for a bit, and the host interrupts him, starts talking, but quickly throws in a "thanks for the call Bob" which is really him hanging up on the jerk. Greatest thing ever. You know that guy is sitting somewhere LIVID.

Yeah, and you guys can give up on hiring Mike Zimmerman.

I sorta kinda in a morbid way miss the old days of hearing guys call up and talk about how bad of a job Holmgrum or Holgrum was doing.

I played at a small college level before damaging my leg to hell and transferring to OSU. However, I KNOW guys like Clem probably know more than me. Just because you played, doesn't mean you know the ins and outs of football. For some guys it just comes easy.

Also I laugh when I hear the Cowboys have talent. No they don't. They have very skilled players, but they're old and past their primes.

I hear the same stuff from Bears fans about the Lions, I don't know what the infatuation is...

"They've got the talent"

nah, not really... They have a QB who appears to not want to take the next step, a poor running game, and a lackluster defense with a "superstar" pass rusher that vanishes in big moments. But hey, you got the best WR in the game!

People that say crap like that don't watch a lot of football, but probably play A LOT of fantasy football.

*Note - I use the "you've never played hockey" on tons of people because it's hysterical listening to new hockey fans think they know the game.

I hate when the "experts" around here start talking about where they have college players ranked on their "big board" for the draft. It's as though they have their own war room and everything!
