As the other one should be locked very soon, we should probably carry on in a new thread.

So, please continue the discussions.

Unreal. Josh McDaniels is apparently back in the mix and could quite possibly be the 2nd candidate interviewing tomorrow along with Pettine. I thought the Browns said they moved on from him?

They moved on from him. Was that before or after half the league turned us down?

I'm surprised they're actually planning to hire someone. I was really pulling for Jimmy to just say to heck with it I got this.

Well that or CoachB

We didn't move on from him, he withdrew his name.

The more I read about Pettine the more I like him, but I am not opposed to McDaniels.

I know, I was being sarcastic in regards to Mary Kay Cabot widely reporting it was the Browns who walked away from him.

This is the tweet. Maybe it's just me but I don't think it sounds the same as what you wrote.

It is also Tony Grossi, who hates Lombardi. I wouldn't be surprised if our front office feeds him bad information just to make him look bad (although he does that on his own quite ofter anyway).

I asked you in an earlier thread but you never got to answering it:

You were such a big Mangini fan, why do you dislike McDaniels? They seem pretty similar only McDaniels had Belichick's blessing when he left to be the head coach.

I think that probably the biggest problem that McDaniels had was an inability to manage his assistant coaches. He got into arguments with Mike Nolan, his choice at DC, and a guy who did turn around the defense ....... until McDaniels fired him after one year.

Man, Mike Nolan, a tremendous DC ..... Mike McCoy, one of the best OC around ......Rick Dennison at OL Coach (who went on to coordinate some damn good Texans offenses)

He had a great, great staff .... and he was reluctant to let them do their jobs. That's not what a great head coach does. For all of his faults, real or imagined, Mangini did let his coaches coach.

That is fair. Although I would say that while Mangini let his coaches coach, he did not let his personnel people personnel.

True, though Mangini was perfectly willing to give up power over personnel when Holmgren came in.

I admit that the whole situation with Kokinis was weird beyond words, especially given that they were friends.

Mike Pettine's agent is former NFL player Trace Armstrong (CAA). Armstrong also represents Urban Meyer, Brady Hoke, and James Franklin. I am sure there are others but I am having a hard time tracking them down. CAA is a conglomerate that represents pretty much everyone who is famous.

They're bringing the final two candidates for a showdown? What is Banner going to give one a rose? A secret candidate? Why is this such a damned circus? Is this all going to be on season 2 of "on the road with the Cleveland browns"?

If it's some secret candidate... Gruden? Who the heck?

I agree Steve. I have been on board with this process all along, but this final two...it's like they are filming a episode of The Apprentice. It's to the point with Pettine he can point blank say, do you want me or not? No more interviews.

Not only that, if we do hire some "secret" candidate, it looks to me like we have been jerking Pettine around to kill time, and I don't respect that one iota.

According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the feedback Pettine received is that he is a finalist for the position. A source informed of the Browns' plans said Pettine will fly to Cleveland on Thursday for a third interview.

The Browns also interviewed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano on Wednesday, Rapoport reported, per a source with knowledge of Schiano's schedule. Rapoport added that Schiano will not be hired, citing a source with knowledge of the Browns' thinking.

just my take:
I think Pettine is the guy, and the browns were probably set on hiring him Tuesday. But then he came in with unexpectedly high contract demands, or a poison pill if fired early..... heck, I would have wanted some sort of poison pill in the contract. The browns balked at the idea- then parted ways. The browns have token interviews with Koeter and of all people Shiano, and now there is a mystery guy emerging. All of this could be one big ruse to lower the asking price by Pettine- It will all come to a head today. Either Pettine is hired or they will be back at square one- I suppose that is where McDaniels name is surfacing....

Schiano interview fulfills the the NFL's "Looney Rule" requirement for the Browns, according to some (funny) guy on Twitter.

The other candidate has to be Quinn, IMO. I sincerely hope that that we are not playing Pettine off against Quinn as you suggested above. If so, good luck to us the next time when we are trying to get candidates to interview...

Do they really need a third interview? I would imagine this third meeting is more about contract negotiations.

That's what Will Burge (Bleacher Report, former WKNR Browns beat reporter) is reporting this morning. He was on 92.3 about a half hour ago and said his source is from inside the Browns and at the top of the food chain, and that he would stake his reputation on it 100%. So take that for what it's worth.

I think I'd be a tad bit annoyed if after 12 hours in 2 separate interviews, an employer wanted to meet with me again before deciding.

I agree. I believe Pettine is the guy and the rest is smoke from the FO to try and give them some leverage in contract negotiations. Will Burge (former browns beat reporter for WKNR was just on 92.3 and confirmed he had "two high ranking official" Pettine is the guying barring a contract negotiation snags). I don't have the link to his audio, but here are a couple of his tweets. Take it for what it's worth.

I love everything I read about Pettine. I think he's passionate, I like that his defenses are always pretty good. My only worry is who he brings in to run this offense. I only worry because he's not an offensive guy, and he has never been a head coach before.

Our offense is still a complete mess, we have no quarterback, and I just hope they bring the right guy to run it.

It's definitely been noted by all Browns fans that this is the second year in a row we are looking for a coach, and the second year in a row they have swung and missed on the guys they wanted.

The things I don't like about Pettine are:

1) Haslem said we were bringing in a proven winner...he doesn't meet that criteria.

2) No one else out there even had him as a probably candidate. So again we are stuck with an unproven rookie HC.

Who did we offer the job to that we missed on?

Just because the Browns have interviewed many candidates and not hired anyone doesn't necessarily mean they've swung and missed. Could it just possibly be that they actually wanted to interview many and then choose the best one from those they interviewed? I mean, how often does a job go to the first person hired without actually talking to some others? If the Browns had gone that route wouldn't many people be claiming that they didn't even talk to anyone?

Also, just because 3 people pulled out of the search doesn't means the Browns swung and missed - only that those 3 were interviewees and possible candidates.

Well, it's either that or we get stuck with a proven failure as a head coach who was looking for another shot.

To your point: Will Burge stated in is interview on 92.3 this morning that McDaniels was their #1 candidate per high ranking officials in the Browns org. Said, Lombardi and Farmer sold McDaniels to Haslam. Haslam was very impressed with McDaniels during their interview. When McDaniels withdrew his candidacy Lombardi was "crushed" per his sources. Burge stated, Adam Gase was their #2 choice and was intially Banner and Haslam's guy after being told by folks in the league he was "the next hot thing." He then withdrew his candidacy as we aware.

Burge also noted, the Browns were very impressed by Mike Pettine in their initial interview.

Again, take it for it's worth. I'll look to find the audio of his interview this morning.

I'd rather have the guy that can motivate, runs a hybrid defense (which our personnel seems pretty damn good for) and has had top 10 defenses everywhere he has been.

Let's not bury him before he even starts.

I believe Eric Mangini is the only coach in Browns history who was hired with previous NFL HC experience... It's pretty much the way it goes in the league today.

All I asked form this search is that they looked at as many candidates as they could.... No one person is a sure thing, all the candidates had warts of some kind and none are / were a slam dunk.

That said, the name, their history mean little to me save they are nice for points of discussion and in some (many?) cases heated debate.

Known names have failed / suceeded, no names have to start somewhere and also have failed or succeded... Whomever they pick, I will support because they coach my team and I will hope they bring the success we all desire.

Judgement reserved until I see decisions made and results analyzed.

Right now I just want someone in place and a staff hired... time is passing and things need to be moving true north.

Not at all - in fact I never mentioned Pettine or a number one at all. I'm trying to tell you that they possibly felt they wanted a large sample of interviews from which to pick the best candidate. After those interviews, they've determined that Pettine was at least in their top 2-3, which normally warrants a second interview and possible hire. Could they have had an idea of who they wanted going in? More than likely they did. Maybe after interviewing some of them, they knew candidate X wasn't the guy.

On a humorous note, when you said, "Are you trying to tell me...?" I couldn't help but think of Major League: "Are you trying to tell me that Jesus Christ can't hit a curve ball?"
