He'll fit right in with our defense from last year. Stingy on giving up yards, liberal in giving up points.

Interesting. Tom Withers saying there could be a press conference as soon as this afternoon. Good deal.

This kinda reminds me of when Sam Rutigliano was hired as our head coach, I was mad, never heard of him, some coach coming to us from the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS....common, why in the heck would we ever bring in a coach from the SAINTS of all teams back in the 70's to be our head coach....I was terribly wrong about Sam...Great Great wonderful man....Hope Pettine is half the coach Sam was, if so were gonna be ok....

An interesting side note. . .

Guys off of Billick's staff that became head coaches:

Marvin Lewis
Mike Nolan
Mike Singletary
Mike Smith
Jack Del Rio
Rex Ryan
David Shaw

and probably

Mike Pettine

That is pretty freaking impressive.

Lewis and Ryan are the only ones that were a HC that took their teams to the playoffs.

Or did I miss something.

As a side note, Jimmy Donovan just reported that Pettine is in Berea at Browns HQ.

Does anyone think Quinn quietly told them that he wants to pass thus making it silly to wait for him? Just wondering. we'll never know I think.

I am talking more about the impressive staff Billick had, not the success the guys had as head coaches. Just to get hired as a head coach is a hard thing to do, having eight guys from the same staff become head coaches is pretty ridiculous.

Originally it was said that we would interview him again this week and we never did. I will be an optimist here and say that after they hired Pettine they didn't need to interview Quinn again.

They wanted to pick him up in person so that they could sign his contract then let him go before they got back to Berea. They needed the limo ride to work out the severance package.

Carucci is reporting that he sat next to the Bills HC on the plane coming in, and he was looking for a new DC. Said the deal was done.

Some of the extra interviews may have been looking for co-ordinators. The Schiano interview may have been to get a good look at what you did NOT want. IMO, Haslam was doing some major information-gathering.

If so, then the offense shouldn't change drastically. That's a plus.

I agree. I think they were sold on Pettine and moved forward with the process of putting together an offer.

The reports we got around here was that they were going to interview him in NYC this weekend when the team arrives there.

So it wasn't scheduled to take place yet. Which is why I was wondering if he very quietly told them that he's passing...

If that's the case, then Pettine is the default candidate. best of what's left.

I hope he's good enough if that's the way it goes.

if this is true... they are terrible at closing deals and getting people to sign the dotted line. Get the signature and after that they can talk about all that stuff

I know and like always, it's fashionable to hire coaches from SB winning teams. Makes sense in theory, it doesn't guarantee success. But I knew what you meant

It was Alex Van Pelt, the Packers RB Coach and former Bills QB. The Packers QB coach went to the Giants to become their OC.

Didn't Cam Cameron work for Turner in SD and didn't he have under him a TE coach named Chud? LOL

Or did they work for Marty? Not sure. I think it was indeed Marty.

The problems he had in Baltimore could have been a problem with Flacco, he's never, from what I remember, had a problem with any other QB..

He seemed to turn Mettenberger around pretty well this past year.

*edit* funny that they're looking at a former one-and-done HC.

I don't think so...from the info gathered especially recent info. It was Gase we were waiting on McD and then Gase...Quinn was a might as well as long as we were waiting.

then we did some data seeking interviews...favors to agents so their client could get their name out and the experience of an interview. Or just curious on our part. Then the unexpected happen - we were Wowed by Pettine. Wowed more in interview #2...and I think we were going to wait but figured...What for...he's our guy and Quinn was not the main wait - Gase was.

So he can go 3-4 or 4-3 probably continue with 3-4 with a lot of hybrid into it.

Cameron...one year he's a genius the next he's a dud. Probably a right place right time kind of guy. I think it will be a good match with Hoyer - not so sure about a Manziel. Was Cameron doing college this year? Why do I think he was...maybe he got the college Offense flavor and will convert some to the NFL...I'm 58 going on 100 but I swear I learn something new every year about football. I don't see Cameron stopping.

Jmho...lets get this on. Get the players into it!

I thought this was worth mentioning. John Telich of Fox 8 Cleveland citing at least one Browns happy to finally have a defensive minded head coach.

Must be a newer player (Haden maybe?) because before Shurmer we had 3 HC in a row that was all D-Fence (Mangini, Romeo & Butch).

I'm deleting the Mary Kay Cabot reports on Quinn given they were reported earlier today before Pettine had arrived in Cleveland.

This sort of reeks of a "Plan G" hire. But honestly, that doesn't really matter. He just has to be the right choice. If not we'll have another frustrating season and Haslem will be facilitating CEO and GM interviews.
