My question is this.If he is such a great choice for HC,then why hasn't his name been a hot topic around the league? Why haven't other teams been falling over themselves to grab him? I'm not saying he sucks, just wondering what the big hoopla is all about.

Teams weren't beating each other over the head to interview Harbaugh before Baltimore hired him either.

Many great coaches start out under the radar, and getting a great QB along the way really helps turn them into a winner. As the QB goes, so will Coach Pettine's career.

There really isn't a lot of hoopla, except for the fact that his was one of the last names actually being bantered about.
You haven't heard his name circulated because he HASN'T been talked about a lot as being on anyone's hot lists.

He's simply a guy - whether he has flown under the radar, been overlooked, or intentionally ignored for the position up to this point is probably anyone's guess.
For better or for worse, we are the guinea pigs that will find out if he's worth it or not.

Are hot topic coordinators usually successful as head coaches, or just "hot topics"? Either way, you just don't know until you give them a shot (and give them a QB).

Well, I think this solidifies that we're not going to have a 3-4 D next year.

We'll have a 4-3 or 4-6 defensive scheme.

At this point, we should just invent some new scheme and stick with it so that we can actually build toward something more than a couple of years in a row.... 6-2 w/ 1-Deep?

Because he hasn't been on great teams... Who gets all of the hoopla and interest? Well, anybody who coaches under Belichick, most of which have been abject failures as HC... now who is it this year? Gase from Denver, Quinn from Seattle, and Zimmer from the Bengals, Jay Gruden from the Bengals, a host of former HCs... Two super bowl teams and a division winner and 3 year playoff team..... Why do you think Horton didn't get any interest?

Funny I was just reading a couple guys grading our hire, I think it was a C+ and a D... neither of the guys could find a single negative thing to say about Pettine, it was all about our handling of the hiring process, which in my opinion, was less about the Browns and more about the media coverage and speculation...

Going to reserve judgment on his coaching ability, but I have to say his demeanor makes me want to see training camp and listen to him chew some guys out lol.

i'm glad he admits and knows the top priority of this off season is the QB position.

that gives me hope we can find a way to get Bridgewater, or....at least Manziel i guess.

I have a good feeling about this guy. I think he is going to bring some fire and attitude to the Browns. I think I was most impressed by him stating he believes in fitting the scheme to the players and not the players to his scheme. Also, that he understands just how important the QB position is to get right.

Finally this farce is over and wish him the best of luck.

Now let's hope he doesn't get backstabbed like their last "choice". This, to me, is THE most important aspect of it all going forward...

If Cameron becomes the OC, I wonder if that means we'll be a lock to take Mettenberger at some point?
I would not mind that at all.

I think we at least have a leader and this leaders attitude will trickle (or avalanche) down to the squad.

Gonna evaluate roster and constantly grade players even in practice. Gold bricks beware!

I also took note of him stating he would hold every player accountable, on every play whether a game or practice and the players will be graded daily. Now just make sure the FO gives him their full support and let Pettine do his job.

Doubt it. Pettine ran the 3-4 with the Jets. He didn't have the pieces to run a 3-4 with the Bills, so he ran a 4-3 or dime. But we don't have the pieces to run a 4 linemen down scheme so he'll most likely have us do 3-4 variants.

Liked that line about "winning press conferences" a bundle! Hope the Banshee was listening. Wish I was more excited, but let us get to work. Welcome aboard, coach! Bring back the pride, and punish those what need it. Go ahead: Make me cheer again.

how you figure we don't have the pieces for 4 down lineman?

Well if we don't, at least we'll know it was probably a good idea to pass.

Like everybody, I like his temperament.. He still needs to find the right guys to do most of the Xs and Os...... I hope he doesn't envision himself as DC... I don't want that.

**Disclaimer, I have no information that he is considering being his own DC, just that I think it would be a bad idea.

Go look at the Browns site, two different stories and in both, Carr is front and center. Is that an accident, or?????????????

Overall it was a good press conference but I thought it was rather telling that for this press conference they used a podium for a single speaker (Pettine) so Haslem and Banner didn't have to be asked any questions about the search, the turndowns, Bess, etc.

They didn't even hold the presser in the normal press room....they went out to the practice field just to have that format.

Silly.

Good story

thank you for the link. I love this paragraph from it:

Quote:

He's also the breakout star of Nicholas Dawidoff's "Collision Low Crossers," one of the top football books of the past two decades. Chronicling the 2011 Jets, Dawidoff paints a portrait of Pettine as a hyper-prepared, open-minded -- often humorous -- unifier who views his fellow coaches as nothing less than brothers.
