I wonder if the choice for OC will foreshadow the Browns intentions in the draft in regards to Manziel vs more traditional QB's available?

I was wondering about that, too.

Here are some names from the collegiate list:

Clarence McKinney. OC at Texas A & M. Not much experience, but coached Manziel.

Scott Frost. OC at Oregon. Former QB. Said to have HC potential.

Josh Heupil. OC at Oklahoma. Former QB. Second in Heisman race. Sooners have had good offensive production under him.

Kliff Kingsbury: Was Manziel's OC before getting HC job at Texas Tech. Former QB. Young, innovative, bright.

I want that OC in place before combine. I was hoping to upgrade Tabor. But we need to "fit" the new book and also figure out who we are weeding out on receivers and RBs especially. And figure out the Oline.

I wouldn't mind seeing Clyde Christensen become our OC.

Kliff Kingsbury from the college list is intriguing. He seems to have a bright future but I am not sure that he is ready yet.

I thought he might be an option until I read he was demoted. What is going on at Texas A&M?

Staff shake-up means Sumlin expects more out of A&M offense

Quote:

This week, Sumlin demoted Clarence McKinney and promoted Jake Spavital to offensive coordinator. But this shift was a far-from-desperate move for an empowered coach who just received a contract extension and a huge pay bump.

And somewhere, a merciless dictator is in awe of Sumlin's apparent cold-blooded approach to making changes for an offense averaging 44 points this season.

"Jake will call the offensive plays beginning immediately," Sumlin explained in a news release, meaning Spavital, the quarterbacks coach, already is handling the duties for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Duke at Atlanta on Dec. 31.

On the heels of a season-long audition after McKinney's promotion from running backs coach, Sumlin simply had come to the conclusion that McKinney, a strong recruiter and a former head coach at Yates, is better suited to again handle the A&M running backs moving forward.

And Babers has shown that an assistant can overcome such a career speed bump. He was named Bowling Green's head coach this week after leading Eastern Illinois to a 12-2 record and a quarterfinals showing in this year's FCS playoffs.

Kingsbury is currently the head coach at his alma mater. I doubt he would leave that job to be an offensive coordinator. He is a future star though.

I was just researching top corrdinators in college and posted the Raven article. I really don't have a clue who to hire or he we are thinking of hiring. Just trying to stimulate conversation.

This guy is still available. I have feeling a coaching Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck is a pretty easy job.

Quote:

Geep Chryst

If available this guy seems very intriguing. I know Harbaugh had a lot to do with rebuilding Alex Smith and getting Kaepernick to where he is today, but this guy was there all along the way as well.

Maybe this guy can fix Brandon Weeden!?!?

Our old friend. Possibly one of the worst coordinators we've ever had. He went on to have some success with the Panthers.

I doubt divisional teams will allow us to interview their guys for our openings.

We would have to wait till after the Super Bowl to hire him. I don't think that would be a good idea.

Quote:

Gary Kubiak

In a perfect world he is the best choice. But does he fit with our new coach? How much money does he want? Is he healthy? There are a lot of questions.

I don't know much about any of the other guys on the list besides Kyle Shanahan who I have talked about in different posts. I have no clue who we will be hiring as our offensive coordinator. My guess is that it is a name that we aren't even thinking of.

I was reading something about how some fans think his HS Coaching experience isn't a big deal. I don't agree with that. that's when the best teaching happens. Didn't Paul Brown start out in HS Coaching? I think that turned out pretty well didn't it. LOL

After saying he considers his staff as brothers and wants guys who have his back. I'm guessing he may have his own ideas and not the who's the best retread or top guy if he knows nothing about them.

I agree. And that is what I would prefer. Although it seems like he knows he needs a strong offensive coordinator because that side of the ball is not his forte.

Chud for OC, a local guy who grew up a fan. Innovator, and a players coach. This guy can get the most out of the qbs currently on the roster, so no need to draft a qb this year. We can get Phil Dawson's replacement at number 4. We can........oh crap I forgot to use purple LOL

Kubiak...or Cam Cameron for me...I don't really wish for an assistant coach from college to take the job I mean if Pettine has a short list of very football intelligent position coaches that he thinks is ready to run an Offense...I good with that. HC of college unless its from a Division II or a weak conference they won't think about it. Kingsbury would be the one college guy I would want but as was stated he's got a better gig as HC.

What I like about Cameron (correct me if I am wrong) is he spent a year in college coaching an O I think he got a flavor of the new stuff going on around there. Probably a mental fix on what will work in the NFL what won't what hybrid would make it NFL ready, innovative stuff mixed in with the normal stretch Offense that we ran last year.

JMHO...hope Pettine gets his buddy as the DC

I'm down with can Cameron, and in fact if we did go with him we could sit tight and take Sammy Watkins at 4,David Yankey at 26....and draft tre mason in the 2nd round. Then take mettenberger at the top of the third

I was looking at the Ravens article Vers put up and Christensen stood out for me too. I was also intrigued by Geep Chryst.

Christensen has coached almost every skill position on offense and has been an O-coordinator twice in his career. The first was with the Buccaneers in 2001 for a 9-7 wildcard team. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/tam/2001.htm I know that team was built on D and didn't have the best offensive stats, but it is experience at the position. He followed Tony Dungy over to Indy and in 2010 was O-coordinator with the Colts, a 10-6 wildcard team. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/clt/2010.htm This team was top 5 statistically, but I have to assume the stats are skewed due to Peyton's presence. The thing that really stands out to me is his longevity within one organization despite the myriad of changes that happen within that time. I would think that that would indicate he is adaptable and doesn't rest on his laurels but evolves and adapts as things change.

The first thing I noticed about Geep Chryst was that he coached Alex Smith to a franchise low of 5 interceptions in 2011. http://www.49ers.com/team/coaches/Geep-Chryst/3ac62f4d-a289-46f6-bc9f-031f34771f8c You could argue that a lot of that had to do with a ball control scheme, but that is still impressive, especially considering the likes of Montana and Young that wore the 49'er jersey. I also found it interesting that he worked in the Bears organization when Harbaugh was a rookie and he was O-coordinator/QB coach in San Diego when Harbaugh had his best career year there in 1999. Harbaugh must have developed a lot of respect for him to bring him in after being named Niner's head coach. Those 49er qb's have produced and I like the fact that they are two different styles of player, which shows versatility.

There is one more guy that I would love the Browns to add to their coaching staff, but not for offensive coordinator. At the risk of sounding like a blatant homer, I would really like Earnest Byner to come here as a running backs coach. The guy has coached Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and he did a heckuva job with that motley crew in Tampa this year. Gosh, Bobby Rainey got cut for Fozzy Whittaker and looked all pro when Tampa got him. You can make the argument that he might not have had that much influence in Rainey's improvement in such a short time, but I like to think he helped that light go on for him. A few years ago, when Byner was coaching with the Jags, I heard an interview where he talked about his coaching experience. He said that if you have knowledge it is your duty to pass it on and share it; you can't just keep it for yourself. That really rang true for me.

i think when it comes to position coaches, former players MAYBE should be the top choices.

i'm not saying he should, but it be awesome if we could get Deon to be a DB coach. you know the players would respect the hell out of that, seeing as he has been there, done that.

It is hard to get former players who are in the media to leave to take lower paying jobs as position coaches.

The only guy that I can think of that has made that transition recently is Rod Woodson and he got fired after only one year.

thats one thing i didn't know.

do they actually make more doing the media than an actual coach? i always thought for some reason about that.

and yea i forgot about Woodson, was it that they all got fired, or was he that bad?

I am pretty sure they make more in the media. And even if it is comparable you would think they would rather the easier, low stress job where they get to live where they want.

He was with the Raiders, so he could have got fired because he was bad or because the organization is terrible or both.

For some numbers I was able to scrounge up.

Deion makes about $2 million a year according to the tabloids talking about his divorce alimony. Gruden makes about $4.3 million a year. According to random wiki searches position coaches usually make $200k-$400k per year.

Lower tier media personalities like Mangini or Lombardi for example might find getting into coaching or front offices more lucrative than media work. I think Cowher is in that upper tier. I'm not so sure about Billick.

It is difficult translating former players into coaching potential. A lot of the very successful ones get by on physical or mental ability that isn't necessarily teachable. (for the life of me I can never remember Ken Dorsey's name without googling it)

The money is either more or comparable, depending on your stature.

But the kicker is the hours. An NFL head coach puts in double or triple the hours of an analyst. And the job comes with stress that isn't present in the media role.

There's a reason these top tier analysts don't take HC gigs.

Martindale was the Broncos defensive coordinator for one year in 2010. They had the worst defense any way you look at it.

Pro Football Reference - Don Martindale

Quote:

Don “Wink” Martindale is in his second year as the Ravens’ inside linebackers coach. Martindale, who has 26 years of coaching experience, including eight NFL seasons, was the defensive coordinator for the Broncos (2010) prior to joining Baltimore. He experienced the first postseason action of his NFL career with the Ravens in 2012, a journey which culminated with a victory in Super Bowl XLVII. Martindale’s initial NFL coaching experience came in Oakland when he spent five years guiding the Raiders’linebackers (2004-08). Prior to that, he coached 11 years in the collegiate ranks, including three years at the University of Cincinnati alongside assistant head coach John Harbaugh. Martindale also helped Western Kentucky and head coach Jack Harbaugh earn a Division I FCS National Championship in 2002.

2012: (with Baltimore) In his first season with Baltimore,Martindale tutored the inside linebackers, a group that was depleted by injuries, including LB Ray Lewis, who missed 10 regular season games and returned and recorded an NFL-leading 51 postseason tackles (a franchise postseason record) and 1 PD for a defense that forced 10 turnovers en route to a victory in Super Bowl XLVII...LB Dannell Ellerbe set a career high in tackles (89) and sacks (4.5) under Martindale...Over the final six games of the regular season(since Week 12), Baltimore’s defense allowed the NFL’s fourth-fewest yards per game (299.0 ypg).

2009-10: (with Denver)2010: Promoted to defensive coordinator...CB Champ Bailey represented the team in the Pro Bowl. 2009: Joined the Broncos’ coaching staff as the team’s linebackers coach and helped the Denver “D” rank 7th in the NFL (315.0 ypg)...Guided LB Elvis Dumervil (who signed with the Ravens in March 2013), who led the NFL with a team-record 17 sacks, to Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors...It was Dumervil’s first year at LB...D.J. Williams also thrived under Martindale’s leadership, earning a spot as a Pro Bowl alternate.

2004-08: (with Oakland)2006-08: Tutored the Raiders’linebackers, including ‘05 draft pick Kirk Morrison, who along with ‘06 draft pick Thomas Howard, led the linebacking corps...Morrison and Howard were two of the league’s best at forcing turnovers, each tallying 7 INTs from ‘06-’08.2006:Oakland’s defense ranked third overall (284.8 ypg), first against the pass (150.8 ypg).2004: Entered the NFL coaching ranks as the Raiders’ inside linebackers coach.

2001-03:(with Western Kentucky)2003: Promoted to defensive coordinator/linebackers for the Hilltoppers, who were ranked sixth in yards allowed per game (283.7).2002: WKU won the Division I FCS National Championship.2001: Was hired by head coach Jack Harbaugh (John’s father) as inside LBs/special teams coach.

1999: (with Western Illinois)Was defensive coordinator/linebackers coach...Tutored former Ravens 2001 draft pick and All-American LB Edgerton Hartwell.

1996-98: (with University of Cincinnati)1997-98: Coached special teams/linebackers, including former Ravens LB Brad Jackson. 1996: Joined the Bearcats’ staff as the defensive ends coach, working alongside John Harbaugh, who was assistant head coach.

1994-95:(with Notre Dame) Defensive assistant for the Fighting Irish...Notre Dame earned trips to the Fiesta Bowl (‘94) and Orange Bowl (‘95)...During the ‘94 season, coached with Dean Pees (current Ravens defensive coordinator), who was the Irish secondary coach.

1988-93: Was the defensive coordinator for three high schools in Ohio, including his alma mater: Trotwood-Madison.

1986-87: (with Defiance College)Started coaching career at his alma mater as its secondary coach...Promoted to defensive coordinator/secondary in 1987.

COLLEGE: Played linebacker for Defiance College in Ohio... Earned a bachelor’s degree in business education.

PERSONAL: Martindale was an all-state linebacker at Trotwood-Madison (Trotwood, Ohio) HS...Born May 19, 1963 in Dayton, Ohio...He and his wife, Laura, have a daughter, Cassie, and a son, Ty.

It's' a cushy job with little to no accountability. (I mean in terms of winning and losing) Those jobs do come with their own set of challenges, but it's not like coaching.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/14350...ack-to-coaching

I mean, Gruden makes about 4 million a year. they don't say what Cowher makes, but he lives in a 2.65 million condo overlooking Central Park. As the article states. (I guess he sold his home here LOL)

that's certainly the high end of the dollars, but what's a DC or OC make 1 million a year? Maybe more, maybe less, But look at the headaches they have as a coach. 16 or more hour days, sleeping in the office, all the pressure?

Take a guy like Cowher, if I had already won a SB and my coaching legacy was locked in, I think I'd take a pay cut to get some of the pressure off. (maybe not but probably)

Dion Sanders makes about 2.5 million a year and nobody hits him and he doesn't have to hit anyone.

http://www.ask.com/question/how-much-does-dieon-sanders-make-as-an-nfl-analyst-on-the-nfl-network

I don't think you are gonna get a team to pay a DB coach that money.. Not even him.

O'niel possibly they are getting their Defensive assistants under contract figuring that Pettine n Oneil will raid the cupboard a bit more???

If our Personnel Dept. has deemed Manziel to be Their guy as in Franchise QB I don't think Manziel is a one trick pony. Option read or nothing at all. They won't pick the QB via system they will pick him cause he is going to be a stud in the NFL.

Not too hot on the Raven coach...but I'm sure the D will have Pettine written all over it.

Oh n nice to know we are keeping Tabor

I have a different outlook on the keeping of Tabor.
I'm ok with keeping him for this year for two reasons. the second and lesser of the the two would regard the constant churning at the bottom of the roster ala special teams. Some on here think that effected his special teams enough to make him look very bad this season. But my first reason is for this year only, it allows the new first time coach to focus on filling vacant openings at more important staffing positions while not having special teams nagging at the back of the brain this year. Tabor is avg enough to hold down to fort this season.

Cowher and that whole CBS crew really have something good going. Those guys are really awesome together ...JB, Dan, Bill, Shannon, and Boomer. Great chemistry, great show. If I were making $2.5m a year doing that, no way would I leave.

I agree.

Even on the play that many people are blasting him for .... the onside kick cover against New England, we had a player in position to recover the kick ...... he just couldn't do it.

We lost Benjamin, our primary kick/punt returner for the year. We then ran through Greg Little, and Bobby Rainey before landing on Fozzy Whittaker as our kick returner. On punt returns, we used Armani Edwards and Davone Bess before landing on Jordan Poyer late in the season as our PR.

Billy Cundiff was 21/26 on FG tries. He was 32/32 on XP.

That's respectable.

Our KO coverage was middle of the pack.

Lanning wasn't quite as effective. He did a nice job punting inside the 20 ... but I do think that he can be upgraded this coming season.

I do think that Tabor did about as good a job as anyone could have done, given the material he had to work with.

I get the continuity aspect even for a year. ST coach is a good spot to put in a gifted guy with not much experience - I would think that Pettine has many of those.

I just thought he was one of our worst coaches. We lost 3 games from special teams and I'm not talking about the - returns for TD variety... Blocked punts Bengals game...muffed punt Chiefs game. Had an onside kick on the receiving end and positioned it with ONE guy to retrieve or lose it Pats game.

Just terrible execution...after the muff punt by Bess we had somebody take the punts that were not fair catches. He wasn't prepared with the next best once Benjamin went down. Its just I can't remember a team losing several games like this because of poorly coached ST...and yes we had that good beginning with the fake punt and FG as for execution. As for who he had on special teams...heck Skrine, Mingo and Haden was there...and usually its the athletic bottom of the barrel on special teams for all teams - we excuse him but not our D with the same bottom of the barrel playing. Its not a hard position to fill. From the get go - OC, DC, OL coach, DL coach, etc all were hired by other teams. Tabor didn't get hired by all these new staffs? There is a reason.

Jmho...one would think it won't make or break us...and yet if you think about it - if we win those 3 games would we be re-booting?

I just thought he was one of our worst coaches. We lost 3 games from special teams and I'm not talking about the - returns for TD variety... Blocked punts Bengals game...muffed punt Chiefs game. Had an onside kick on the receiving end and positioned it with ONE guy to retrieve or lose it Pats game.

Tab, wasn't this the reason Chud kept Tabor on his staff last year? If I recall, I thought most liked the reason Chud kept Tabor, because his attention to detail and special teams play was consistent.

The whole team coaches included shut it down after the New England loss, which is why Chud was sacked. Maybe Tabor was the lone coach who kept working. Who knows.

But Bess WAS the next best option once Benjamin went down. In Bess's career, he's been a part of 120 punt returns...he did it often in Miami and was rather successful in it.

Bess fumble could be his lack of focus dealing with the issues we all are aware of now. So the top two returners on the depth chart are out....for any coach, OC, DC, and ST.....your unit is gonna be effected.

Bess was more than adequate to return punts....he just lost it mentally and everyone in our organization from the top down is claiming they didn't see it coming.

If we want to partly blame the ST for losses against CIN and NE, fine. I get that. Then we also have to partly award the wins against MIN and BUF. Because if it wasn't for those tricks plays and return yardage, we would't have been in position to be successful there. Oh, and Buffalo's backup, haha. YTown, I agree. We were in fine position on that onsides against NE. Whittaker made the foul up...not Tabor.

I think coaching was fine....his personnel, and ongoing rotation mid-late season was not.

You are correct,horribly coached ST's.
First rule of hands team on turf, cover the kicker.By alignment, the Browns didnot.
Then to attempt the same onside kick against a prepared team,of coarse it was going to fail.
Muffed punts, blocked punts, just plain out bad.
The kickers did well,of coarse that's all on the kicker and has zero bearing on the coaching.

I never was high on Tabor...of course he followed the best ever so I kept an open mind...just never was impressed and say what you will - fact is he has to prepared for all situations and have them coached up...its not like its difficult thing...if you work hard at it and have a football mind you are prepared for all situations.

Position coaches...sure with we would hire Rice as our WR coach even if its on a training camp consulting basis.

its the little things...and Gordon seemed rather football intelligent in that clip and understood everything that Rice was saying which means he's coachable. Of course it was from the great Jerry Rice but that is what I mean...pay the guy 100K to be at our training camp. Who knows maybe he has a desire to coach? WR -> OC -> HC. Anyone see Big Break NFL. He just wants to WIN!

I do think that Tabor did about as good a job as anyone could have done, given the material he had to work with.

Well, maybe. The kicking and punting game weren't too bad.

However, putting Davone Bess back there to field kicks? Come on man! Maybe nobody could step in and do the job after Benjamin went down with his injury, but Bess was the best option? Really?! He was back there for 18 returns and fair caught 14 (78%) of them! He even fumbled one of those 4 that he tried to return.

Putting Bess back there was all on Tabor.

It'll be nice to get Benjamin back there again and praying that he doesn't get injured again.

Per Mary Kay Pettine is looking to hire Cam Cameron as the OC.

I'm not a fan of Cam Cameron. He was a terrible HC at my alma mater Indiana University. I know Indiana is not a football school, but he made it so bad football talent went to junior and community colleges instead of playing for Cam! For that, he will always be on my S list! He did help us create the best halftime tailgate parties!

I know he did some great things at Baltimore, then, fell off the stool!

Trying to keep an open mind why is Cam appealing?

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns are considering LSU OC Cam Cameron and ex-Titans OC Dowell Loggains for their offensive coordinator job.

Cameron doesn't have a strong reputation among NFL observers, but his LSU offense made a spectacular leap in 2013 as Cameron remade himself into a more aggressive offensive mind. Loggains was fired along with Mike Munchak in Tennessee. He had Jake Locker playing some of the best football of his playing career before 2013 injuries. Either would be a sensible hire in Cleveland.
