ST. LOUIS -- According to reports in the Los Angeles Times and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, by way of an affiliated holding company, recently purchased a 60-acre tract of land in Inglewood, Calif.
The reports indicate that the land is located between the Forum and Hollywood Park and could serve as a possible spot for development of a new NFL stadium according to the Times' sources.
Kroenke has made much of his fortune by way of land development and has long owned large amounts of land in California and elsewhere. Whether this move is simply adding to his land or being used for other means related to his football team remains to be seen.
What is known is that a clause in the Rams' lease at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis is set to kick in at the end of the 2014 season. So long as the stadium hasn't been upgraded to one of the eight best venues in the NFL before that time, the Rams' lease will then become a year-to-year proposition beginning in 2015.
Discussions about how to bring the current stadium up to that standard have been ongoing for the past couple of years but no resolution was reached.
In 2012, the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission proposed a $124 million upgrade to help the Edward Jones Dome reach the "first tier" standard.
The Rams countered with a more elaborate proposal which was estimated to cost somewhere in the range of $700 million.
In February of last year, an arbitrator heard both proposals and ruled in favor of the Rams. Soon after, the commission made it clear it does not intend to follow through with the plan, meaning the lease will almost certainly expire after next season.
Los Angeles has been without a professional football franchise since the Rams and Raiders departed for St. Louis and Oakland, respectively, in 1995.
Following those departures, Los Angeles has often been bandied about as a possible relocation site for a number of franchises but in each case, the city has been used as leverage more than anything.
For any team looking to move to Los Angeles or any other city, there would still be substantial hurdles to clear including the blessing of the NFL. The league currently has a strict and expensive set of guidelines for a team to meet before relocation would even be put to a vote before the league's 32 owners.
Kroenke has not publicly discussed the stadium situation.

I wonder what first tier means? Is there some written standard used by the NFL or is it just some subjective opinion?

It is some kind of official rating system and the first tier is the 8 best stadiums.. how subjective it is I don't know but if they put it in the lease, then the NFL must have some official stadium ranking criteria they use...

If I'm the owner, I move the team to LA as soon as possible. I know St. Louis fans are better than LA fans, but come on, the LA market is soooooo much bigger. And I'm sure the NFL would favor you in almost any situation for giving them the LA market back.
I know it's a touchy subject for us Browns fans, but if you can improve your franchise, do it. And the Rams haven't been in St. Louis since the beginning of time.
It's too bad the Jags can't move to LA before the Rams. They don't ever sell out and it's pretty obvious they'll move eventually. Maybe they'll be the London Jaguars in 5-10 years.

There should be a one and done rule for cities to lose football teams. That would suck big time for it to happen twice to St. Louis. I don't see how any Browns fan could support the Rams move back to LA.

Stan Kroenke bought land.  I mean, I get that he likely did it on purpose and will use it as leverage to get as much from the city of St. Louis as he possibly can for the stadium. But, the man and his subsidiaries by thousands upon thousands of acres every year in the world's biggest cities. It's how he stays rich.

I agree. Despite that stupid (but hilarious) Ram's Rules video that was an internet sensation a few years ago, St. Louis supports their team from what I have seen. Cardinals will always be #1 in that town, but they support their team.

It makes me wonder about the timing of the upgrades to our stadium now.
Is it happening now to bump them down a notch and help trigger this and then help facilitate a move to L.A.?

I heard the land purchase is just leverage for a new stadium in St Louis. I don't think California needs 4 teams. I think 3 is sufficient, they should talk to Oakland.

Don't sleep on Georgia Frontiere being a nutty owner. She was just as bad as Al Davis.
LA (where I live) supports all of their current sports teams. A football team will be supported, it's not even a question.

But can you with your current stadium? The Colosseum is just way too large for an NFL team. If you can't sell out your games then the team struggles financially. Again, wasn't that your biggest problem?

Well there obviously has to be a new stadium. The Coliseum and Rose Bowl are both pretty dumpy (the Coliseum is also in a horrible neighborhood).
That's why whenever there is a stadium rumor in LA it always comes with the caveat of a new stadium.
Eventually some city will wise up and not agree to pay for a stadium (I am looking at you San Diego) and LA will get a team. The NFL will also rejoice because LA is a huge market and they will also be able to throw LA into the Super Bowl rotation.
If you build it (with lots of luxury boxes), they will come.

Ok, this one has me thinking. Some states have 1 team, some have 2, some have none. There is a 650 mile radius from Denver to the next nfl city. I don't see how moving a team from the heart of the Midwest would benefit football in America. I think 4 teams in one state is a joke, at the same time, I think Florida having 3 teams doesn't make sense either.

I honestly think Mike Brown should be forced to sell the Bengals and they be moved to a city that isn't battered by Bungleness.
If your team is hosting a Playoff game, and it isn't terribly cold, you shouldn't have to have someone buy almost 10,000 tickets. Ridiculous.

I don't think population density should determine team locations. Linking cities/teams across the country provides more regional support, and a wider fan base. This is assuming we are keeping 32 teams.

Is this a ploy to apply pressure to the city of St. Louis to get stadium remodeling done by saying, hey, we already own the land in LA so we could move if you don't upgrade our current facility?

It has nothing to do with the state, the only factor is can the local and surrounding market support the team... and ultimately that decision should be up to the owner who currently owns or starts the team.
I will say this, as far as the NFL is concerned, the barrier to move a team, once it is established, should be very high.
