If a school/organization wanted to celebrate black history month, they could have celebrated it in other ways other than a stereotypical black dinner.

It sounds like you are making the assumption that this is the only thing they did to recognize black history month. Now I have no information on this particular school what-so-ever (maybe it is the only thing they did) but my kids wrote papers on historical black figures, studied civil rights events, watched films and documentaries, my daughter had a field trip to the place where the Greensboro sit-in was held, they had a white pastor come speak to the class who had his family home burned down in NC in the 60s for openly supporting black integration...

I agree with you that if they served fried chicken and said, "Well, that's enough to recognize black history month." then yea, that's pretty lame... but if it was done as one part of a larger curriculum, then I don't see what the big deal is.

I am offended by this and by people making light of the situation.

If they wanted to celebrate history for Italian Americans it still would be offensive to serve spaghetti for lunch..

I would be offended only because I know the schools spaghetti would basically be egg noodles and ketchup.

Fried Chicken, Cornbread....mmmmmm, so hungry. Looks like I'm going to Boston Market for lunch.

You are correct, I am making an assumption because that is all the information that was given but even if they used the lunch to go with the an official celebration the lunch is/was a mockery.

When reading about this, only one image popped in my head, which is the cartoon of blackface black child eating watermelon and spitting out the seeds. It was created in the 20s or 30s? its interesting that there was the same stereotype in a a completely different era.

I guess I don't understand why food is being served to honor black history month. If you want to honor something, have an assembly or a class project with some information highlighting actual black history.

Question.....

If a predominately black school with a black administration would have served the exact same lunch, would you also be offended?

Yes, because if you want to celebrate something you don't make a mockery out of it.

A celebration needs to highlight the achievement(s) of the event/person/thing.

I disagree, its up to the persons intentions. If a person is maliciously doing something to be offensive then they are mocking. If they are not doing it maliciously then its just ignorance. Either way it should never have been said/done.

I believe that many would not perceive it the way you are. I believe their intentions were not malicious. I believe people look far too hard for reasons to feel offended.

While this school may have missed the mark, I do believe had it been done by a predominately black school with a black administration, this article and the fact it happened at all would have never have been reported.

lol

I am assuming this is a tongue and cheek comment so I will play, and for the sake of argument I will take this as both a serious and witty comment lol

There is nothing wrong with black history month, just like there is nothing wrong with Christmas, Independence day or Memorial day. An argument can be had that each American holiday that is celebrated and recognized by our government and citizens can be offensive to other american citizens. The issue is when people do offensive things on purpose or by sheer ignorance of not knowing which causes people to be offended. In this specific case they used a stereotype to promote black history month. I can name other examples but I don't want to offend anyone.

I was trying to express how no matter what happens some people will find a reason to be offended including doing nothing. There is no right answer, so enjoy going through life being offended at every little thing.

I also don't think they did it maliciously but that doesn't make it better. I give everyone the benefit of the doubt and maybe they had the best intentions but they did just miss the mark.

Pit, sorry with out any facts or supported material, that statement can not hold weight. That's like saying if Bill Bellicheck was still the Browns head couch we would have won 4 Superbowls by now. Although that could be plausible there is no proof that it could actually happen. Back on topic I could also say "I bet that there are Christian parents offended because some schools probably celebrate Hanuka by cooking an orthodox Jewish lunch during the Hanuka holiday."

You can't pull random opinions out of thin air with no proof. (just saying)

Believe me I don't get offended about every little thing. I am very careful what I say because I don't want to offend people. I believe what you say is an expression of you, your family and what you stand for. I also believe that most people are like me and will not jeopardize their character over things that they don't believe in.

I just think its ironic and funny that I don't ever get offended by people in my daily life because for some odd reason everyone is soo peachy and nice to me. I wonder why?

I want to make sure I got it correct.

You (Arps) think that I am offended and will be offended by many things because i am offended of the actions of the school and other jokes on this thread? is that correct?

Of course I can. that's why it's called an opinion and not a fact. And I do feel fairly confident in that opinion. I know you don't agree, but people often disagree with their opinions.

Then your argument is not strong.

Provide a documented instance where what you said has happened. If you can't then your argument is purely speculation with absolutely zero proof. Not a very strong or compelling argument.

The question is why do you feel confident in that opinion?

Because historically, in this country, the accomplishments of our European ancestors and even the American Indians was just called "History" and every kid studied it.... while the accomplishments of blacks was often overlooked or at the very least minimized...

Which only compounds my opinion. Which is, had a predominately black school have done the same thing, it would not have been a story at all.

Are you saying it's logical to conclude that no predominately black school has never done this? Or more likely to say we've simply never heard about it?

Quote:

Because in my estimation, it's more likely to have happened than not. In my estimation, overall people look at those who they believe may or do offend them. Not so much at those they feel don't or won't offend them.

Black people use terms and slang amongst themselves that they find VERY offensive when used by whites. Which is a prime example of the double standard and how my example shows that white America is held to a different standard among many blacks.

But they have in the past. QuestLove, the drummer of Jimmy Fallon's band (And a great hip-hop pioneer), caused a stir when he said this idea of a black meal being watermelon, chicken and some veggies was racist despite the head chef being black and the event where the food was served as a primarily black event.

Also I believe the schools should have served those kids some knowledge of Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Huey P. Newton, Frederick Douglas, and other leaders during the Civil Rights era who are not covered in most curriculums.

I don't care ...... I still want a red-headed, English/Slovak history month. You want to talk about being minimized ........ name me one red headed English/Slovak person you ever read about in any level of school.

American Indian History month is in November. The European countries have every month that isn't Feb, November, or September/October. Almost everything about US History and culture is designed to support European accomplishments. Even in text books describe the differences between European civilizations and non-European civilizations. They speak lowly about Native American and African civilizations making their governments sound unorganized and chaotic compared to their European counterparts. History writers also tend to write towards the idea of underselling the wars of Natives and Africans as petty things while propose Europeans didn't. To answer your question there are white history months, it covers 3/4th of the year.

i don't know why anybody is offended. i'm part black and part turkish.

if a school decided they wanted to do a Turkey Culture day, and serve Yufkas and Donars for lunch, i'd probably send them the recipe.

food is a very important aspect of different cultures. to say otherwise is purely ignorant and quite frankly, one of many reasons why our country is viewed so poorly in many parts of the world.

everybody wants to be offended nowadays.

Winner, winner pizza dinner! (I'm half Italian)

Food is most definitely part of any culture, it is something to celebrate (see Italian festivals, Irish Fest, Oktoberfests and their immense popularity). I've said it to people before and not just on the internet, and would say it again, in a heartbeat.

To not celebrate the food of a culture is to miss out on a large part of not only the culture, but of the history of that culture.

Pasta, red wine and tiramisu to celebrate my Italian heritage
Corned beef and cabbage, beer and potato candy to celebrate my Irish heritage.

Minus the alcohol, if my daughters school served either of those meals to specifically celebrate those cultures, I'd actually encourage her to buy lunch those days and we don't usually buy lunch, we usually pack.

Several of the most flat out beautiful women I have ever known were Greek women. I worked with this girl when I was 17, and she had absolutely perfect features, an incredible body ...... man, just about the most perfect girl I had ever seen to that point in my life.

Here it is 33 years later and I can still see her face, but can't remember her name.
