My mother's family was from the deepest part of the hollers of WVA. Every female could make THE best fried chicken I've ever had. Chicken, especially fried, was a staple for them. Now my mother NEVER saw a black man until she went to Cleveland around 1948 or so. Absolutely ZERO contacts with blacks down home and yet fried chicken was plentiful.

Fried chicken isn't so much a black thing as a southern thing and many blacks have southern roots as I.

I've no black heritage but I like all the foods this school served!

Actually both sides of my family are from the mountains of south eastern Kentucky. My dad was one who I believed recognized the reality that so many refuse to come to.

That's if people weren't so concerned about the differences in each other and found a common thread, the division in our nation would be far less.

The fact is these foods arose from "the poor". It was common for most all poor people to eat more chicken, pork and garden grown foods. It's what they had access to and was inexpensive to raise. It is "the culture of the poor".

As far back as I could trace my family, they were sharecroppers. Much the same as were many freed slaves. He also taught me that as long as class wars existed, keeping such people divided served to weaken the voice of the poor and working class.

That these divisions kept many from gaining opportunities and advancing because their was far too much division for them to work together to establish their goals into action.

That's what troubles me about such threads than anything. I see the division going on still today.

Once, the sole province of the poorest of the poor, it was considered 'beneath' the aristocracy to ever eat such a thing.

At least 6 generations of American missed out on some seriously good eats because of class distinctions: "Here... I'm done with this- see what you can do with the rest of it-"

Now, a plate of sweetbreads* in Manhattan costs a king's ransom.

I hate it when my gastronomical neighborhood starts becoming all gentrified....






* Sweetbreads: a protein dish made from the Bovine thymus gland. Blanched, seasoned, dredged is seasoned flour, and pan-seared. Boom.

So would that mean if they had served fried chicken and collard greens, yet left out the watermelon, everything would have been fine?

Yes, I think so. Watermelon is a joke that only exists because of some earlier anti negro artwork.

I work at a college. Every so often at one of the dining halls they have soul food night. Nobody gets mad about that, hell the black students love that night, and they have fried chicken, and mac and cheese, greens, sweet potato pie, ham hocks, all that traditional soul food.

I absolutely love fried chicken. I love mac and cheese. I hate sweet potatoes, never had collard greens, don't even know what ham hocks are............so, apparently, what does that make me?

A stereo type? An uneducated rural person? A southerner? Maybe an uneducated northerner with stereotype qualities? Maybe an educated northerner even if I am rural?

Or - maybe it just means I like fried chicken.

Hey, I like fries too. And anything I make with eggs. I like tortilla shells with pizza sauce and sliced roast beer........maybe that means I part mexican, part italian, and part roast beef lover.

This whole thread is people bitching about stereotypes (uh, check out stereotype), and others bitching about it, and others bitching about the stereotype.

Show me one person that doesn't like fried chicken and I'll show you a vegetarian.

I disagree, its up to the persons intentions. If a person is maliciously doing something to be offensive then they are mocking. If they are not doing it maliciously then its just ignorance. Either way it should never have been said/done.

Does anyone even know what German food is anymore, other than sausage? I'd like me a nice schnitzel with some spaetzle, followed by a strudel. I'd also like a beer, pretzel, and a pickle while I celebrate my Germanity.
