Johnny Manziel won't put his throwing arm on display for NFL scouts at the Texas A&M pro day event on March 5, and will instead throw for scouts at an on-campus workout three weeks later, according to a report.

Houston Chronicle NFL reporter John McClain reported Manziel's decision via Twitter.

It's not uncommon for prospects to hold on-campus, private workouts for NFL scouts after and in lieu of pro days. Most commonly that occurs when an injury requires more time to heal, although there is no indication that Manziel is overcoming any physical problems as he trains for the NFL Scouting Combine in San Diego with quarterback coach George Whitfield Jr. Another concern quarterbacks sometimes cite is poor timing with receivers with whom they are unfamiliar. At pro day workouts, quarterbacks throw to the receivers they've grown familiar with as college teammates, and do so at campus practice facilities they have grown accustomed to, making for the most comfortable setting.

The delayed campus workout could give rise, however, to speculation about whether Manziel will throw passes at the combine. Quarterbacks are scheduled to work out on Sunday, Feb. 23, less than two weeks before the Aggies' formal pro day event. Two other quarterbacks who have been invited to the combine, Alabama's AJ McCarron and Fresno State's Derek Carr, have indicated they have yet to decide whether they will throw at the event.

Both McCarron and Carr cited timing with receivers as a deterrent.

Manziel has avoided media interviews since his announcement that he would leave Texas A&M early for the NFL draft nearly a month ago.

I will be very disappointed if Manziel doesn't throw at the combine. I understand why he wouldn't want to, but I want to watch him answer all the questions about his arm.

The NFL should eliminate the private workouts or whatever they are called and tell these kids that if they want to show what they have they need to do it at the combine. Have 4 different combines. Top 300 for the 1st. 2nd combine for the next 300. A 3rd for the rest of the guys and the 4th right before the draft for anyone who couldn't attend earlier because of injury.

The combine would put everyone's workout on even ground and the players would work out because their draft stock would drop if they didn't. Just my 2 cents.

I am assuming that very few QBs have thrown at the Combine in recent years, thus it would be safe to say that it would be wrong to bash Manziel for not throwing. Yes? No? LOL

That is not a correct statement...

I do not believe Luck, RG3 or Cam threw at the Combine.

You hear Mayock crying about it every year.

Especially among the top QBs.

They want as controlled an environment as they can create to look the best they can.

Not only that, all it can do is hurt them. Why willingly put yourself in to a position that is all risk and little gain? I think more of the top receivers should skip the receiving drills...just do the running part. Catching everything isn't going to help them all that much. Bobble a few and it could hurt alot.

I guess I understand it if he's trying to get over an injury.. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

Someone already said it, and I agree, if they are physically capable to perform at the combine, then they should be compelled to do so. Then it's all even.

Throwing at the combine is really meaningless.

Prospects game tape is what counts. The combine is for physicals, interviews and in the case of other positions than quarterback for prospects to display their athleticism.

The college pro days, private workouts, and invited workouts plus the all important game tape give the evaluators all they need to see.

Manziel's interviews at the combine are more important than him throwing the ball to receivers in shorts with no coverage.

I forget who said it, but I heard one of the experts say something like: The combine was supposed to be to confirm what you know about a player, not to create a new impressions. Now I do think that the mental side of the game can be more exposed at the combine, but as far as the physical ..... does it matter if a guy who covered A1 quality talent like a blanket all season long, runs a 4.5 40, on one particular day, in shorts, instead of a 4.4? Does it matter if a QB winds up measuring in at 6'1.75" or 6'2"?

I think that the combine is really dangerous in that some scouts change their evaluation of an entire year based on one single moment in time. That can be extremely dangerous. The one exception would be a QB, where you could have a guy who comes across as extremely unintelligent, and incapable of grasping basic concepts. This mental deficiency could drop a top QB greatly despite great physical talent, and this could apply to any number of QB who come to the NFL from a "wing it" offense to one that requires complicated reads. The mental side is far more important in the NFL ...... and if a coaching staff isn't comfortable that a guy can make basic reads, for example, then that might give them pause as far as drafting him.

Probably not throwing until the 27th of March:

2014 NFL Draft: Johnny Manziel sets date for private workout
By Derek Harper | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com
February 10, 2014 7:49 pm ET

The next time most NFL talent evaluators are likely to see Johnny Manziel throw a football is March 27. That is the date of Manziel's personal on-campus workout in College Station, with the Houston Chronicle's John McClain reporting Manziel will skip the Aggies' March 5 team pro day.

Manziel has not announced whether he will throw at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis -- quarterback passing drills are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23 -- but he has been working in the San Diego area with noted quarterbacks guru George Whitfield Jr. along with Baylor's Bryce Petty and Rice quarterback Nate German. They are among 14 FBS starters expected to work with Whitfield in March, according to McClain.

Manziel has been working on his mechanics, and it is not uncommon for top quarterback prospects to schedule their own pro days, choosing the time for NFL teams to flock to their campuses to watch them throw to familiar receivers.

Manziel is the No. 3-rated quarterback and No. 7 prospect overall, according to current NFLDraftScout.com ratings. However, he remains one of this draft's most polarizing prospects with a high-profile off-field life to go along with a skill set that has scouts debating his NFL potential. NFLDraftScout.com analysts Rob Rang and Dane Brugler both have Manziel going No. 4 overall to the Cleveland Browns in their current mock drafts, although he is not among the top 10 on Rang's Big Board.

Manziel is in a tight race within the top 10 selections with fellow underclassmen quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville and Central Florida's Blake Bortles. Brugler has Bortles going No. 1 overall to Houston and Bridgewater No. 3 to Jacksonville, while Rang has Bortles going to the Jaguars and Bridgewater to Oakland with the fifth pick.

A pair of senior quarterbacks, Fresno State's Derek Carr (No. 4-rated QB) and Alabama's AJ McCarron (No. 6), have not announced whether they will throw in Indianapolis.

Anyone else think firing LomBanner drops Mr. Football down on our draft board? Perhaps closer to where he might actually be rated instead of in the top 4? I do hope that any rumor that we would trade up to #1 to get Manziel now goes away.

I think very much so.
It may also raise a big, tough kid like Bortles up the board.
Pettine will seek tough guys for his "bloody your nose" style.

My guess is Farmer has kept his mock draft on paper while he watched the so called experts build their board.

I'm still cheering for Manziel to go #1, because that means Houston will have taken that risk instead of the Browns.

I refuse to believe for a second that Houston will do anything other than take their favorite QB with the first pick. Look at their current roster, and try to convince yourself that any other move makes sense for them.

I was thinking the same thing Cal. Just from vibes. Whatever merit you can assign to that. I just don't get the feeling Farmer would be interested in a guy like Johnny especially not higher than general consensus. He seems like no nonsense hard knocks type of guys. Not sure he'd be a proponent to drafting the rich party boy. Or at least he probably considers all around character and morality more. I like Johnny as a QB but I could totally see Farmer in love with Teddy. They seem like a match made in heaven.

If Bortles or Manziel go to Houston at #1, I could see us going up to the #2 spot to get Teddy. In fact, we'd probably have to to keep him away from JAX.

Passing on Manziel for Bortles would be a large mistake. I hope this is not the case.

Teddy is still my number one guy.
Manziel is second.
Bortles is a distant third.

If Bortles or Johnny go to Houston I'd be on the phone with a blank check to the Rams for Teddy. Idk what I'd give yet but preliminarily(is that a word?) I'd say 4, 26, and a future 2nd maybe more. I still truly think Houston want's Clowney after a trade down. Idk why I just get this feeling. He has a better chance to succeed in Houston across from Watt. We are the perfect spot for them to drop to too. Teddy to Cleveland, Jake, Bortles, Clowney and Johnny football takes his talents to the black hole!

Exactly. If the potential risks outweigh the potential gains, you don't do it.

Especially if you're a prospect that's more or less a lock to be a first or second rounder.

Outside of Teddy there is no QB in this draft worth trading up for and even then Teddy would seriously have to put on some muscle weight to survive in the AFC North.

To be honest, the more I think about it the more I really wish we could make some trade downs and pick up some second round picks. There is a fun draft simulator I tired out and come out with this draft:

Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 19 (MIA): Marqise Lee, WR, Southern California (B+)
Round 1 Pick 26: Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor (B)
Round 2 Pick 3: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State (B)
Round 2 Pick 5 (ATL): David Yankey, OG, Stanford (B-)
Round 2 Pick 8 (MINN): Tre Mason, RB, Auburn (C+)
Round 2 Pick 13 (DET): Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois (C+)
Round 2 Pick 18 (MIA): Ed Reynolds, FS, Stanford (A-)
Round 2 Pick 20 (ARI): Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh (A)
Round 3 Pick 7: Adrian Hubbard, OLB, Alabama (A)
Round 3 Pick 9 (BUF): Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson (A-)
Round 3 Pick 23 (K.C.): Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame (A-)

Came about by trading down 3 or 4 times and picking up second round picks. We would get a #2 WR in Lee, 2 stud HB, and 2 stud OG to make a great offensive line. We get two good QB's who can fight it out with Hoyer but will have the luxury of being able to sit and learn instead of being rushed.

Not likely to happen but man our whole franchise would change over night in a draft like this. ANY QB would do well here then and I think that in the best way to build a team!

No ones saying sell the farm.

I think giving up a late first and a future 2nd to get the guy you want is reasonable.

That's where you set a limit. If they want more you say that's too much.

I think the RG3 trade actually makes this easier. No one will ever give that up again (hopefully) so teams can't expect it.

If they ask for it. Laugh and hang up.

Um no, only 1 QB in the second and 1 QB in the third. Heck some drafts have either or both of these guys going in the first depending on the mock.

We have NO starting HB's so yes I took 2 HB in the 2nd but ONLY after making sure I had 6 count them 6 second round picks. Some would argue they are also the 2 best hb in the entire draft and to get them both in the 2nd is a bad thing for you? Especially after I fixed the o-line by drafting two outstanding OG so there can actually BE a running game.

I dont view ilb or cb, as nearly as, important for moving our team forward this particular draft. Being able to keep our QB's out of the hospital and an actual running game seem more important. Next draft I would see a good reason to focuson our def secondary though. Also I did take a FS but if in FA we got Bryd then I prob would have gone with a CB or ILB. Stil I think ed reynalds is a prefect fit with Ward.

That being said I am very happy we have farmer for our new GM. I like how Haslem seems to know what he wants is making it happen that way. Like Haslem said there is no primer for a new owner and he learned a lot this past season. I am sure things will improve. I have hope again. Hopefully this draft doesn't.

lol, perhaps a comma would have helped:

No ILB or CB but you take two QBs, plus two RBs in the 2nd? Glad it's Farmer not you in charge.

I think there are plenty of running backs that will be there in the 4th & 5th. I also think Carlos Hyde will be there in the 3rd, maybe even top of the 4th. I don't think we need two of the top RBs. I wouldn't take either of those QBs that high. I would have taken another receiver possibly as well. I think you reached and over drafted at a couple spots. But what the hell, it's your fake draft. I like playing around with the scenarios too. Here's my latest staying at 4 with no trades:

Round 1 Pick 4: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville (A)
Round 1 Pick 26: Hasean Clinton-Dix, FS, Alabama (A)
Round 2 Pick 3: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida (B)
Round 3 Pick 7: Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU (A)
Round 3 Pick 19: Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut (A-)
Round 4 Pick 6: Jimmie Ward, SS, Northern Illinois (A-)
Round 4 Pick 27: Brandon Linder, OG, Miami (Fla.) (B+)
Round 5 Pick 5: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska (B)
Round 6 Pick 4: Terrance West, RB, Towson (A)
Round 7 Pick 3: Jordan Tripp, OLB, Montana (A)

Here's one where Bridgewater wasn't there but Bortles was. I then traded our second first and made a couple other trades to see what kind of value I could get in the middle rounds. As you can see, while I missed out on Hyde, I did find two other backs (if we really need two and Dion Lewis isn't coming back). I did manage to pick up a guard and everything after the 4th rnd is BPA/value, (IMO).

Round 1 Pick 4: Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida (A)
Round 2 Pick 1 (HOU): David Yankey, OG, Stanford (B)
Round 2 Pick 3: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State (B+)
Round 3 Pick 2 (WASH): Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin (B+)
Round 3 Pick 7: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State (A-)
Round 3 Pick 19: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn (A)
Round 4 Pick 7 (OAK): Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin (A-)
Round 4 Pick 15 (NYJ): Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU (A)
Round 4 Pick 27: Marqueston Huff, FS, Wyoming (A)
Round 5 Pick 5: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska (B)
Round 6 Pick 4: Christian Kirksey, OLB, Iowa (B-)
Round 6 Pick 5 (OAK): Chris Boswell, K, Rice (A-)
Round 7 Pick 3: Marcus Martin, C, Southern California (A)

After taking Roby, getting Abbrederis was smart, as Roby showed he can't cover him. If Abbrederis ended up in Pitt, Balt or Cincy we would have been in trouble.

I would have rather taken Verrett but he wasn't there. I think Abbrederis makes a solid #2 somewhere, maybe slot... kinda has Welkerish skills. Not the fastest or biggest, but knows how to get open and has good hands.

he NFL should eliminate the private workouts or whatever they are called and tell these kids that if they want to show what they have they need to do it at the combine.

Why??? Because you are impatient? I mean you are basically saying the combine is your ONLY chance and that is it???If you are sick or tweak a muscle and are not at 100% for the combine then screw you....you are going to be drafted a few rounds later (if at all) costing you a TON of money....

And what about the teams?? You are basically restricting their chance to look at these kids as many times as possible. I mean you have game tape sure...but then you have Combine, Team Day, Personal Day(if you are good enough to command it), and then private workouts. That is at least 3 and as many as 4 opportunities where they gain far more information than game tape because they are in person. And you want to reduce that to 1?

Each side needs to do what is best for themselves. The team is going to want as many chances to view and talk to said player. And said player has to balance how much to show said teams in order to be drafted as high as possible. For some that means getting as much visibility as possible because you came from a small school or were overshadowed by other players or for another reason you r name is not well known. For others it is to be conservative and hold back to reduce the mistakes and or possible injuries that can happen in these combine situations that are out of your control. A personal day can be very controlled and highlight your strengths and put you in a better position.

If you are in the players position...are you satisfied with being put into a situation ...an exercise, a drill, whatever...that you know you will look unfavorably for one reason or another. So much so that you know it can cost you a lot of money.....but because this what has to be done...then so be it....you lose a tone of money??? for instance we see a lot of qb's decline the workouts....alot of it has to do with have to throw these drills with guys they have never thrown to before. and yet they are supposed to look accurate. Now yes scouts take this into consideration...But when you are throwing balls that guys are dropping or are missing guys because you don't know their speed and don't have any timing with them yet....you look like you have crappy accuracy....so how much leniency are they supposed to give you...it is extremely subjective....but put yourself in an environment that YOU control with receiver you have thrown with and do the same drills......then you haven't lost the money you would have at the combine.

the current system is not going to change...it benefits both sides...why would they change it?

I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

1 - I made provisions for sickness/injury.

2 - This allows for better comparison as they are all on equal footing. Same wind conditions. No fudging the 40 yard dash to 39 yards.

3 - It would save a lot of money by not having all the scouts and coaches flying all over the country for pro days.

4 - These work outs are basically job interviews. If I am about to hire someone for millions of dollars then I want to see how they perform in a setting that they haven't manufactured. Real games aren't that way. I also would like to see how well they adjust to players they don't know very well. Perhaps we trade for a Wr or there are injuries and we are forced to play a couple of rookies a la New England. I want to know if a Qb can adjust to those conditions.

5 - Imagine trying to hire someone at your workplace. You invite them in for an interview but they refuse to answer any of you questions but tell you that if you want to know you have to fly to their house so that they can be in a comfortable familiar setting before they will tell you anything.

And you can still have personal/team days if you want. The players aren't allowed to be worked out at them now.

My gut tells me we are in a much better position to keep a guy like Manzeil grounded given the new Coach and GM than we were just a month ago.
