Heiden signs 4-year extension
04.14.2007
The Cleveland Browns have signed TE Steve Heiden to a four-year contract extension, the club announced today.

Heiden played in all 16 games last season for the Browns, including six starts, and totaled 36 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

Heiden (6-foot-5, 267) has played the last five seasons with the Browns after being acquired from San Diego in 2002. Heiden's most productive season was in 2005 when he caught a career-high 43 receptions for 401 yards and three touchdowns.

Heiden is an eight-year veteran who has played in 111 career games, including 60 starts, during his career with San Diego and Cleveland.

He has totaled 156 receptions for 1,258 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Good. He's the kind of guy we need to keep around opposite of Winslow. Hard worker that doesn't mind staying in to block every play if that's what it takes to win.

I love him even if 300 pound plus Dlineman out run him.

He is an effort player like Fraley and my boy Hamilton.

I agree,...he makes Winslow work, and can take his place admirably when Winslow is a turd, that is most of the time,...

which part of last year was he a turd?

j/c

I'm happy that we locked him up for 4 years... he's a team player and will help us out as a team

Does anyone else worry about us putting an emphasis on TE's this offseason?

Heiden is a pretty solid backup TE with EXCELLENT HANDS!! He catches everything...

question... do the Browns need 3 TE's on the roster? or can we just keep 2...

We could have 2, but, if Chud's Offense uses TE's(which nobody knows yet), then it would be smart to have 3 in case of injury and goal-line situations.

I'm not sure what you guys mean. We just extended our 2nd string TE so we are set for a couple of years. We may or may not of brought in a waiver wire type player from San Deigo but it's not like we're actually spending money on him.

I'm glad to see this. Heiden is underrated, IMO. He isn't the greatest TE, but he works hard, catches the ball and isn't a horrible blocker. I'm glad we locked him up for a while.

Glad to see this FO recognizes valuable guys, even if they're not the stars.

I dont.

Everyone is always talking o-line this o-line that, we have to build the team in the trenches. Isnt TE considered o-line? Especailly a blocking TE like Heiden who does have great hands but doesnt catch everything. Im glad that the Browns signed him longer which means he must fit in Chuds gameplan.

I didnt really see that much of an emphasis.

Good decision.
Steve is a solid tight end, and when you throw him in with K2, you have a great set of TEs. Nice job getting that one down to the FO.

I like this signing..I just hope it has nothing to do with Winlsow´s surgery recovery....now if we have some cap space keft I´d like us to lock up Sean Jones and maybe even Holly who will become FAs after 2007

I think we consider Winslow a receiver.

Good to have solid hands on the team, god knows, they are rare.

Good signing, Heiden is a hardworking blue collar guy.

Tight Ends:
Winslow
Heiden
Dinkins
Ortega( PS)
Krause?

Fullbacks:
Vickers

Is it significant that there are 4-5 TE's on the roster and only one fullback?
If TE is a strength of the team, will Chud play to that strength?

I agree. He never gets the praise he deserves. He has put his time in for this team. If this team ever gets to experience a big winning season, I hope Heidens there to see it. He is one of the few that has earned it at this point.

We are going back to a lot of the 2 TE sets. Inking Heiden for 4 more was a good decision. Now we just have to add some depth behind Winslow and Heiden.

Chud started his college career as a TE, then coached TE's then became the OC.... in college,,, then Coached TE's here and I believe in SD,,, then OC here..

As far as I'm concerned, he's a guy that should know how to use TE's,,, and we have good ones, so if he can't or won't use them,, wow, what a collosal mistake hiring him would end up being!

not to mention that he was the TE coach for a high powered offense that liked to make regular use of one Antonio Gates.

Expect to see a fair amount of TE play this year

Thanks, now I'm officially scared of our OC. Carthon was a former FB, I can see it now:

"3rd down and 4, Winslow on the reverse - he stops and throws..."
"What's this? Steve Heiden in the shorgun, Winslow is the C - what's going on here?"

put Fraley in the slot and I think you've got a winner of a play there

I look forward to a TE or H-back offense b/c our TE's are talented, or at least half decent. How could any defense defend against Winslow in an H-back offense? I see a match-up nightmare for any opposing team trying to cover KW and Heiden at the same time.

j/c.....

why is it that I'd rather see 3 WR sets w/ TE.. (Braylon, Joe, Wilson, Winslow) than two TE sets w/ (Winslow, Heiden, Vickers, Lewis)..

BTW I live in the DC area. I watch the Skins and how they use Cooley. He does OK. He can block half decent and catch. But, he is nothing like KW. Winslow in the same situation could kill opposing defenses like Cooley never could. I just hope Chud has this in mind. JMO

lol glad to see we have so many Hieden fans like me.
TE is probably our most solid position on the entire offense lol.
