Big game even though it is early in the season today. If we take this we will have taken both series from the Sux so far this year. If we are llegitamate contenders we need to see the guys respond by stepping it up.

Sabathia vs Contreras.....should be a good one. Since I have to be out of the house on errands for the next 2 hours I was hoping if I started a game thread some kind souls would keep this thread updated with the happenings.

If this team could get some clutch hitting this weekend, these games wouldn't have been close. Runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, no runs. Bases loaded with one out, and one run scores (on a walk!). The situational hitting in this series has been horrific.

the weirdest part is that with all the chances we've had to break this game open, we still only have one hit in this game, and that was the sizemore double to lead the game off...

Great start for CC today.

I agree about the clutch hitting. I think the weather being cold affects the hitters quite a bit but we were pathetic with ducks on the pond to day.

I dont like what I was able to hear when Hafner was at the plate. Lots of bad at bats for the guys today. Even Grady got in on the act. Hafner HAS TO hit for this club. If not ...him and Victor are a waste of roster space as neither one can play the field.

Good teams win even when they play bad and we certainly did that today. We won but I cant say I am happy with everythingso far.

Anyone else concerned on how Hafner's played this year?

I'm not panicking, but he's not nearly as clutch as he was next year, aside from that home run.

He'll probably wake up in May and go on a tear, though.

good win for the tribe today, nobody could buy a hit on either squad, and the tribe outpitched the sox, straight up...

cc was great, borowski looked awesome to close out the game...

i really like this team with shoppach behind the plate, he calls a really solid game...

Your concern should be Borowski and Hernandez. They need cut, traded, dropped out of the team plane.

yeah, hafner is fine, guys like him, who can't get any momentum from playing defense in the field, take a little more time because they're still rusty from the off-season...

jim thome was the same way when he was here... he always had bad aprils, and when may rolled around, he was back to hitting for average and knocking the ball out of the park...

from last year to this year, the biggest difference i see with this team early on is the confidence in the pitching, with the staff, and with the bullpen... it seems like everyone knows their role, and things are going more smoothly... the white sox have one of the best lineups in baseball, and we've really handled them in 6 games... especially these last 2...

While borowski has been a little shaky at times he has converted all 5 of his save chances and thats all that matters.Hernandez has been dissapointing so far but i think he will end up being solid. The tribe bullpen has been much better so far.

That IS all that matters.

I am okay with Hafner not being a stud right out of the gat but something about his at bats makes me think he is pressing too much. I dont remember him being a notorius first pitch swinger and he has done it 3 times in the last 2 games. With the way contreras was pitching today there was no reason for him to not take a few to see if Contreras thow some strikes.

What a crap game that was. The Indians have a real problem with guys on third don't they? I can't say too much though cause I am all b/c a win is a win is a win! April is important in October!

"One hit? We only got one damn hit?"

Got that same load of garbage fed back to me about Mesa who I wanted traded for a used ball and bat - and that bum blew the World Series. Borowski: 6 appearnces, 5 1/3 innings 5 hits, 3 walks and 3 ER. That's HORRENDOUS. 5 ro 5 in saves doesn't mean a thing to me - his numbers point to him getting blasted IF we get to the playoffs. The difference between regular season and post-season is post-season teams take advantage of guys like him, they are what opposing teams dream of - a horrid closer that let's people on. Stop being short-sighted. 8 runners on base in 5 1/3 innings is the worst possible scenerio for a closer. He needs dumped immediately. TRUST ME. I don't want to have to use the "I told you so" like I did with that fat loser in '97. I won't be able to handle that again. Borowski=Wickman=Mesa - all suck and are losers, always were. If it's not 3 up and 3 down for your closer, can him because he's not doing his job.

With all of the troubles that this team had last year with the bullpen, why would you want to take apart something that is working right now? I don't have the most confidence in the world in Borowski, but he is getting the job done for the time being. Coincedentally, not to puncture too big of a whole in your theory, but the Tigers won with Todd Jones, the Cardinals with Adam Wainwright. Neither were exactly 1-2-3 guys in the 9th last year.

ok if we dump him,who will be the closer then.i cannot believe you are ready to give up on a guy after 5 appearances.who do the indians have on the roster or in the minors that can step in and be the closer.we saw that carmona could not handle it last year.

Closer by committee. Eric Wedge is a Hargrove clone, they manage by the book - the worst thing you can possibly do. In 97 Assenmacher was on more than I'd ever seen im, he should NOt have been removed - we'd have won the series. I have always been and always will be 100% against a closer UNLESS he's a former BONAFIDE #1 STARTER extending his career. (ie Johnson, Clemens, Martinez). Those are the only worthwhile closers. Much like "franchise QB," and "shut-down corner" the term "closer" is a pointless catch phrase.

closer is a tough position to fill..

the guy has to have a short memory, and he's gotta have the ability to get first pitch strike more times than not...

the reason we lost the '97 series to the marlins was because mesa lost complete confidence in himself, go back and watch game 7, when the lead got blown, mesa is shaking off every pitch that alomar wanted...

if you set the bar on whether a closer is doing his job or not, by 1-2-3 9th innings, than you're making things unfair, because you can count on one hand how many guys in baseball can do that, and even those guys will have occasions where they put guys on before finishing the job...

i can't fault borowski, because he's perfect, but it is shaky watching him...

chances are, when you get to the playoffs, you're going to face lineups like boston, new york and chicago, and you've gotta have a pitcher who's not afraid to take those guys on... i don't know how confident i would be in joe borowski in a save situation, in october...

i still think fernando cabrera can one day be a closer, he just needs more innings, and more experience...

these guys come out of nowhere though, mariano rivera, jonathon papelbon, even bobby jenks came alive in the '05 series... and he had just been given the job about midway to 3/4 of the way through that season...

You're argument seems to be that you can throw anyone out there and they can succeed. After watching the Indians the last 2-3 years, I'm convinced even more that you need a good-great closer in order to not only win in the regular season, but also in the post season.

I understand your point with going with the hot hand, but that hot hand can cool off pretty quick when in the limelight of getting the last three outs, let alone the 7th game of the World Series.

And October is all I care about. Being a Cleveland fan for so long I'm tired of accepting mediocre (Borowski is less than mediocre) and making excuses for it. To be a champion we need to play like champions - cut throat. Borowski will not cut it come playoff time, we need to find someone now. Mesa was destined to blow the series not because of loss of confidence but because he is without any doubt the worst closer in the history of the game. The year he was 48-50 in saves I'd have taken a used ball for him. Who couldn't go 48-50 being up by 3 runs per game? Why did I hate him so? Because he ALWAYS let baserunners on. It's why Wickman needed to go and why Borowski needs to go. Listening today, nothing made me happier than when I heard Hernandez was in the bullpen and then sat down because he may still have a sore calf. I keep hoping we cut him or he goes on the DL. If we don't get a closer - than we need to dump delucci, Marte and Nixon and get guys who hit .300 in those positions because we will need runs. We should dump Marte anyway, he's easily the worst 3rd base prospect ever to come out of a minor league system. He never could hit in the minors so he'll never hit in the majors. He also fields as well as my 8 year old nephew would in the majors. I guess I shouldn't be worried about Borowski, mainly because I think we will finish in 4th again.

And the only guys like that are former successful starters. Which is the only way I'd be happy with that position. If we are lucky enough to get to game 7 and Sabathia (for some reason) pitched game 6 - Sabathia would be my game 7 closer. End of story, no questions asked.

francisco rodriguez did not start one major league game... and he was a pretty big part of a world series team, and is now one of the elite closers in the game...

bobby jenks also, never started in the big leagues, and was also a key part to a world series team, on the field when the won the series...

mariano rivera started only 10 games with the yankees before he became the league's best closer ever...

jonathan papelbon has also only started a few games, and is easily a top 3 closer right now...

If we get lucky and make it to October, I'll be saying "I told you so" when Borowski blows games for us because he loves letting runners on base. Much like I expect the Cavs to be swept in round 1 because they can't shoot free throws. I heard all these same arguments when I was tearing Mesa in half long before the series saying the same things. In fact, when Mesa entered in game 7 I turned to my brother and said "we are going to extra innings." When I got home from the bar my Dad looked at my face and said, "I knew you'd be pissed as soon as they put him in." I hated Mesa from day 1 and took garbage for it all the way until that fateful October day. I've been soured on the Indians because of Hargrove. I still am a big Indians fan - but I used to be a complete nut and go to the games at Muni when they were losing 100 games. I watched the farm system like a hawk and got laughed at when I picked the year they were going to the series 4 years out from it. I was so excited when I saw guys like Thome and Ramirez on the farm. The one that didn't pan out that I couldn't wait for was Ogea. I thought he was really going to be amazing. This team has 3 major holes, RF, LF and especially 3rd base. Hopefully they'll be smart and Marte will be gone by mid year never to be heard from again. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't get overly excited - this bullpen is built to lose games.

In 2005 during the season Jenks had 6 saves.

Last year (2006) Jenks had 41 saves, big deal. He also went 3-4 with a 4.00 run ERA on a team that was either 2nd or 3rd in runs scored (sound like Mesa?) He let 97 guys in in 69.2 innings. that's horrendous. He's a terrible closer. Did I mention the Sox didn't make the playoffs with him as their closer?

Rodriguez - Angels lost in the postseason in 2005 and didn't make it in 2006. ERA was way too high.

Rivera - that guy had years where he let up less baserunners than innings pitched. the other guys numbers tower over that. Rivera's control was ridiculous in his prime. the others you mentioned - not so much.

Our closers and relief pitchers in general have zero control. that's a huge problem. Last year we were 30th in the Majors in saves and the problems have not changed. Our set-up man and closer have zero control. They are has-beens/never was players.

yes, jenks only had 5 saves in 2006, but didn't you just get done saying all that matters is october?

so basically, according to your logic, nobody in the league can close.

the cavs are going to get swept in the first round? with the first two games being at the q? lolz, ok, i've had enough of this argument.

All that matters is October, however, when they changed and went to him as THE closer in 2006 - they didn't even get to the playoffs. That was my point. As for the Cavs, I've been saying that since halfway through the season. If you can't hit a free throw you aren't going anywhere - it's a shame. Unless a light kicks on, 69% free throw in the playoffs is a one way ticket home.

Anyone else concerned on how Hafner's played this year?

I'm not panicking, but he's not nearly as clutch as he was next year, aside from that home run.

He'll probably wake up in May and go on a tear, though.

It's only the second week of the season too........He'll get going trust me....The cold weather is part of the problem too, he was hitting fine in Milwaukee......

We should dump Marte anyway, he's easily the worst 3rd base prospect ever to come out of a minor league system. He never could hit in the minors so he'll never hit in the majors. He also fields as well as my 8 year old nephew would in the majors.

Yeah, he was a BA Top 10 prospect (overall) as well as the top Braves prospect. He has been voted the best defensive third baseman at every level he has ever played at.

We've had this discussion before, and you refuse to listen to sanity, but I'll try it again. Andy Marte will never hit .300. He'll hit somewhere between .250 and .270 over his career, with above-average power. The levels he has had success at in the minors include low-A (.281-21-105), high-A (.285-16-63), AA (.269-23-68), and AAA (.275-20-74) (Wait... that's every level!!! ). He'd never had an OPS below 830 until last year (Coincidentally, his first in a cold weather team where he started slow and warmed up with the temperature). Even right now, if you project out his numbers over the course of a season with that .179 BA, he'd have 20 HR, 40 2B, and 121 RBI. Power 3B prospects with his glove (again, it hasn't been there this year but has been at every other level) don't come along that often. Frankly, even his BA over the past week has been .267. You'll go on a tirade here about how Scherholtz let him go, and good players don't get traded twice in the same offseason, so let me respond in advance in saying that Boston was targeting Coco Crisp and Mark Shapiro had never hid the fact that he had wanted Andy Marte from the start. So Boston acquired him not for their own system (Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis were already ahead of him, with Youkilis likely being there for a while), but to turn him into a CF via trade. The Red Sox were looking a step ahead of where they were. It was basically a three-team trade that took four months to finalize.

It's amazing how the "top prospect" is on his 3rd team. People love his POWER. He is Russell Branyan part 2. IF he hits the ball it's goig 90000000 feet, more than likely though - he's going to strikeout. Those batting averages suck for a minor league player. We were through this before. So far, I'm right about him. I will say what I said last year - I hope to be writing an "Andy Marte apology letter" on this board. I sont' see it happening though.

Just wondering...could it be his mechanic's? Unlike Branyan who had a sweet swing but a very bad eye jmo.

I'm feeping it open, I'm willing to give him 3 years (including this one) on the apology letter. Though I don't think he'll last that long.

Three years is fair. If he is not playing very well by then, I'll be bashing him right along side you

for one, jenks was the closer in the 2005 playoffs, he had 5 pretty big saves...

and two, the cavs, for the whole season have shot terrible at the line, but have you been watching the past 2 months? they're vastly improved, and so has lebron james...
