China has nukes. Which means politicians and their families could get wiped out if they declared war with China. There will never be a war with China as long as we both have nukes.

When we are talking about reducing the US military budget. It is useful to remember that the US spends only slightly less on military than the rest of the world combined. We could cut our budget in half and still outspend every region by a good amount. Granted I need to stop using We..."we" have no control over the situation in reality. Massive budget decreases aren't going to happen, but if they did it wouldn't be a big deal for tax payers...just the people actually making money producing war goods.

We should reduce our defense spending, and tell our allies that they need to start picking up some of the bill for their own defense.

We just cannot afford to remain on the path we're on, and spending cuts have to come from everywhere.

that is the price we pay for policing the air and waters worldwide. could you imagine what would happen to the world economy if we stopped?

though people would get more things "Made in America" again, so there is that advantage.

This new plane alone is $167 billion over budget:

Why is US spending so much on the F-35 fighter?
The aircraft is billed as the ultimate stealth attack plane, with a design enabling it to evade radar detection.

WASHINGTON: Despite incessant technical problems and delays, the US military has no plans to cancel the new F-35 fighter jet, the costliest weapons program in Pentagon history.

The Joint Strike Fighter has been touted as a technological wonder that will dominate the skies but it has suffered one setback after another, putting the project seven years behind schedule and $167 billion over budget.

As the Pentagon prepares to unveil its proposed budget for 2015, the program's survival is not in doubt but it remains unclear how many planes will be built in the end and hohttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/Why-is-US-spending-so-much-on-the-F-35-fighter/articleshow/30838021.cmsw many foreign partners will be willing to buy it.

The JSF is a disaster but one that should have been seen coming. A big problem in its development budget has been the Corps. They really want the JSF to replace their harrier jets and demanded that the JSF have VTOL capability. This VTOL is actually making the JSF a worse plane than what the chinese are building with the stolen plans. It's been a long time since another country has had air superiority over the united states but we are on that path.

Great article on the JSF and its problems:

i personally can't remember the last time a country seriously gave us a good battle in the air. if some of you guys know anything recent, please share.

China's also 20 years behind the US in military tech wise.

That we know of...

Of course they could also be hiding a lot and not really be behind at all.

I have been told of a certain sea snake which has a very unusual method of attracting its prey. It will lie at the bottom of the ocean as if wounded. Then its enemies will approach, and yet it will lie quite still. And then its enemies will take little bites of it, and yet it remains still. At the right moment it will strike killing its prey

the above is an analogy, but the premise is...never assume....I assure you our government doesn't assume they are 20 years behind. We must always remain vigilant and prepare for every possible scenario......Its never wise to assume we know everything about an enemy....I love the USA, but its foolish to think we know everything about every country.....As i said though...I highly doubt the Pentagon shares your opinion.....you never under estimate anyone.....never....

That chart is insane....we could cut that by 50% and still out spend every country individually......you could build a lot of houses, and make a lot of communities, and open a ton of community hospitals with that kinda money.......

Or actually start paying our bills.

It's obvious we are going with "Seal" teams and Drones. But if the F35 is a bust, we are in trouble.

The F-35 is already a bust. It's our most expensive weapon system, and it's not even our best fighter.

Outsiders seldom understand fighter development. Few people have actually read the F-35 chapter in the test director’s annual report, and fewer still have understood it. To grasp the full significance of what it says, you would first need to have some grounding in aeronautical engineering and operational testing. It would also be helpful to have some historical knowledge of how other major weapons systems have fared during development. Most of the reporters who cover the F-35 don’t have those insights, and so they tend to rely on other people to explain to them what documents like the test report indicate. Since the joint program office and contractors seldom are forthcoming on that front, journalists turn to the critics who, shockingly enough, render unduly alarming interpretations of what it all means.

The F-35 program may be the most complicated project in the history of military technology. It entails development of three distinctly different aircraft for domestic military services and a host of foreign allies, along with sophisticated training and sustainment systems. Much of the hardware and software incorporated into the airframes is secret — secret because it is the key to preserving global air dominance through mid-century. It was inevitable there would be challenges in engineering and integrating such systems. The Director of Operational Testing & Evaluation has illuminated some of the challenges that remain to be resolved, but one by one they will be overcome as they must be if America is to retain its role as guarantor of global security.

Let me just put it this way, and I hate to sound crass, but I'll be blunt: I know more about the F-35 than any reporter.
