Man, he's been a staple here in Cleveland... fought through some crazy injuries and performed well for us. I'll miss him but can't say I didn't expect it.

Well, this sucks. Pressure is on to fill this hole as well.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I always liked and defended D'Qwell Jackson. For whatever reason many people always picked on what he did wrong and did not highlight his many strengths.

With that said, he is getting old, more expensive, and doesn't really fit our new defense. The writing was on the wall.

I wonder how this will go over with the other players as Jackson was a team leader.

Jackson was released because we could save money and he doesn't fit the defense. If he fit the defense he wouldn't have been released because we have enough cap space to absorb the salary.

Releasing Rubin would save money, but he seems to fit the defense.

Guess they couldn;t agree on a restructured deal, and didn't want to pay him that huge roster bonus,

I've never been as big a fan of him as some others have been, but i think that he played his heart out here.

I think most of us saw this coming, a lot of whispers about it being this year, but it was inevitable.

I thought he was a rock for 8 years. Played his butt off. Fought back from an ugly injury to get back to a starter.

He's a true pro that all our guys looked up to. It's a real bummer that he didn't get that playoff moment that he always talked about wanting to see.

God I hope he doesn't end up with the Steelers.

Too bad from a nostalgic perspective. He was a great Cleveland Brown, one of the best since the return, probably second only to Dawson. I really enjoyed his leadership and fire on the field. He wasn't the best linebacker but he played with passion and was usually around the ball. Good luck, DQ!

Strangely shocked, but not surprised.. if that is even possible.

Sorry to hear it DQ. Thanks for the years!

This kind of sucks, although was very likely to happen.

I hope they at least tried to re-structure that contract, as we are on the hook for half it anyway. Maybe he just wanted out though...wouldn't blame him.

After this and the cap being pushed up, we'll have something like 60mil so spend, so we better do it and bring in 3-4 established vets + Mack+Ward

I think he was out the moment he commented on Chud. SMH. I'm trying not to be melodramatic at the moment, but it's just really hard considering how much he's meant to this team. I hope he can get with a playoff contender.

I've had a lot of debated about DQ with people over the years..he was a steady player but not a dominate LB..they have a lot of $$$$$$$ tied in to their LBs.
I would think they have some players in mind ..I actually thought it was Robertson they would have released first.

A little sad...he was a class act, solid ball player and a very good leader.

The contract was ridiculous - I think he would have been the highest paid MLB in the NFL with that roster bonus? So in that regard he didn't warrant the contract.

Unfortunately for us it weakened and already weak POSITION, ILB.

Mind you I've stated that I wish they would transition Sheard inside (3-4 ILB) but who knows - I doubt we go with Tank Carder and Erasmus?? #50.

Is that Scott deal really dead...lol

I wonder if we are going to draft an ILB at 26 or 35???

FA will tell us a lot. ILB are not that expensive. Rivers coming here?

strangely I have little nostalgia about this.

Decent player, too expensive, not the run stuffer we really need in the middle.

Thanks DQ, appreciate the effort, but time moves on and so must we.

yeah who didn't see that coming...he and Joe Thomas were the two who reacted to the Chud firing. DQ was pretty angry as he liked Horton n the D.

Defense always gets more emotional and into their schemes than the O. A lot more rah rah where O has to be calm n cool.

So uhhhhh, can Khalil Mack play inside?

Cause if that's the case, I'd have no issues taking him at 4.

so... Its not that I'm shocked by this but I don't think I understand it.

we just created a hole in the center of the D and cut our most tenured Browns player.

We have a ton of cap space and there is no way we are going to use it this year or next.

maybe by 2016 but I highly doubt it.

maybe the staff wanted to show people that if you are not worth your contract you are gone?

- Thomas just became the most tenured Browns player.

Next in line Rubin and mack.

After that it's the Joe Haden draft class.

All about the money folks.. His play is good enough,, The money thing got him.

Anyway, Who's up next. Hope they have a plan.

Is Craig Robertson next? Maybe Groves? Rubin? Bryant? That could clear a bunch of cap space but also leaves some holes.

I used to get upset about popular and productive players being cut but when I look at it, if they don't get what they want, they take their talents elsewhere, so no sense in getting caught up in it.

My feelings are, if they get an upgrade, then I got no problem, if they cut a guy and replace him with a dud, then I got a problem.

But DQ was a Vocal leader in the locker room. they may be able to replace his on field stuff, but what about the leadership role..

Sorry to see him go, I wish him well and thank him for his efforts. Good Luck DQ..

hmmmmmmmm so we created another hole amongst many......perhaps we try to resign him at a cheaper price? i wonder how ward and haden will feel about this? losing their leader....perhaps this is what makes them decide they no longer want to be here after their contracts are up....technically we can tag ward. This could change our draft very much so.....

If TJ leaves is our only leader on defense Haden and Rubin? The one thing I truly loved about the defense was the leadership. We knew that we could plug troublesome defensive players in there and know that we could take care of them. We didn't have that security on our offense and it has shown. I just don't feel that way now.

after reading the mary kay thingy it was his decision. what's this going to do to our depth at that position? we may see several LB's brought in FA alone. which won't be a bad idea.

First and foremost....Best of luck DQ and thank you for all your effort and dedication in here in Cleveland!

Like many have already said, this move shouldn't really come as a shock. Personally, I would have preferred to keep DQ w/ a contract re-structuring but I'm not surprised at all this happened. And from reading some info, the moves look amicable as DQ may have wanted to move on as well. Regardless of regime, Farmer and Co. or Banner, this move was probably gonna happen anyway.

DQ was just a poorer linebacker in the 3-4 than in the 4-3. Maybe this means Pettine may keep a more 3-4 base? Maybe this means Pettine wants a linebacker than can help teach his defense (ala Bart Scott reports)?

Personally, I don't think the contract was the biggest issue. It was his value in the 34 opposed to the 43. Much like someone said making the comparison to Rubin's contract, it may be high but at least he fits the system. In the 3-4 DQ clearly did not. Now, this will change if they do move to a 43 base. Then money was clearly an issue. But the biggest factor in terms of money was the escalator he received for staying healthy for two years, increasing his base from $2.6M to $3.9M (this according to DawgsByNature ) and his roster bonus due next week or close to that.

The issue now is we clearly have two holes to fill at ILB if we stay in the 34 or MLB if we use a 43 base. It needs to be addressed.

Good, so at least they wanted him back.

Not sure if we low-balled him or if he thinks he's worth more, but he won't even sniff the 4mil he would have made as base salary now. Dansby got barely over 2mil last season on his one year deal.
Having said that and with his agent knowing full well that he'll make less wherever he goes....to me means he wanted out. The firing of Chud probably was just too much after all those years of buying into what was told him. He probably felt he couldn't be a credible leader anymore in Cleveland.

I just hope he wasn't shooting towards Haslam and/or our new coaches/FO when he said that about stability...that, and that he doesn't sign with the Steelers...

I'd bet that he'd be a rock star at ILB, and I'd have no issues with us taking him at #4.

Of course, that puts a damper on our QB process, and we still need another ILB, but I'm definitely more than good with that.

This also probably gives a little insight as to why we were looking hard at Bart Scott.

Releasing Rubin would save money, but he seems to fit the defense.

but, is a rotational DL in a 3-4 defense worth $8mil/season?

I think Rubin very well could be next (though we may be able to trade him as he still has plenty of value in the league and is only 27yo).
