It's getting hard to keep track..
I've seen where some say we have 30 mill in CAP room, yet another said 41 Mill then I read that the CAP is increasing. And now we don't have DQ's bonus and salary,
where does this leave us?

I thought I had read around $40 million in cap space before the release of Jackson yesterday. Once we dump some of the other dead weight from the team I can only imagine we could have closer to $50 million in usable cap space.
By dead weight I mean Jason Campbell, Brandon Weeden, Davone Bess and Greg Little.
I've heard people say that Rubin could be a surprise cut but I sincerely hope not. All great teams have depth at defensive line and Rubin is one hell of a player.

Cleveland Browns Have $56.45 Million in Cap Space After Releasing DQ Updated Derivations of Browns' Cap Space (as of 2/26/14) NFL 2014 Salary Cap: $132 million (could be as high as $135 million) Browns' Rollover from 2013: $25.09 million Browns' 2014 Adjusted Salary Cap: $132 million + $25.09 million = $157.09 million Browns' Top 51 Cap Total: $89.25 million Browns' Dead Money for 2014: $11.39 million Browns' Total Cap Spent for 2014: $89.25 million + $11.39 million = $100.64 million When you subtract the two subtotals above ($157.09 million - $100.64 million), you can see how the "$56.45 million in cap space" figure was derived. If accurate, this would move the Browns from third to second place in the NFL in terms of most available cap space this offseason, moving ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars. http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2014/2/26/5...er-releasing-dq

There's still a hit from cutting DQ, it's just not as big as it would've been if we kept him.

I have read that we will have $51 million after the release of DQ and the increase in the cap. About half of that is carryover from the past couple of years.
We should continue to carryover a sizable amount of cap space for when we actually find our franchise guy, so we can re-sign him without having to blow up the team. We could spend $30 or so million this year, advancing bonuses and such to the current year when re-signing potential free agents, so that we keep that space available for future years.
We have so many options when it comes to contract structure that it's just amazing. We could "burn" some this year that could be recouped in future season with intelligent contract structure. In other words, give a guy a huge reporting bonus for this year, then smaller, more level salaries in future seasons.
We have a ton of options. Hopefully we use them wisely.

Geez, 56.45 mil in CAP space.
We can really do some major moves with that kinda money.. Not that I'm suggesting we should just go out and spend it all, but dang. We really could add some quality.

I'm a simple guy and do a lot of guessing...you should see my Tax forms...lol
We had 40 mil in cap - they raised the Cap by 7 mil. Plus minus with DQ in dead money and money saved comes to around 5 mil... So roughly 52 mil by my accountant. Ziggy Goombah!

Just clicking,, but see what I mean about conflicting reports.. The link I posted shows 60+ million, Ytown says around 51 Mill, Pblack says 56+ Mill and Eo thinks about 52 Mill
Basically, we don't really know LOL

$56 Million in cap space hopefully will = T.J. Ward. Alex Mack. Jarius Byrd. Ben Tate. James Jones, Allteraun Verner and Jon Beason in free agency!

I have seen multiple people say they want Jon Beason. Why? He is perpetually injured and has never played in the type of defense we will be running. He hasn't been good in years and last year he lost his job on the Panthers to Chase Blackburn (who is also not good) and then was traded to the Giants.
What's the appeal?

The mandated cap expenditure is kind of lame.
I don't blame the team for not spending much of its allotted cap. We don't exactly have a Peyton Manning to be spending a fortune on over here. Gordon and Cameron will be expenses in a few seasons. I guess right now we can throw money at Ward and Mack but SS and C aren't exactly "lets make sure we keep this guy!!" positions.

Oh, sadly, we don't have a Payton Manning to spend gobbs of money on. Wish we did.
But by hanging onto an amount, we are (as long as things don't change) setting ourselves up for that day..
I'm kinda not interested in giving out credit for that, but to be honest, Banner set us on that path.. that's another good thing he did.
We are in a position to really make serious strides in FA and with 10 picks, we can really change the fortunes of this team.
will they? Hell if I know. But the tools to do that are in place.
If Farmer and Pettine are REALLY on the same page and the eye they use to pick players is good, we could be in great shape for 6 to 10 years.
We're gonna find out what kind of GM Farmer is and what kinda Coach Pettine is very very soon..

Well, we've been a stable franchise wreaking of consistency for every bit of 2ish weeks. I'm hearing that potential FA's are now backed up onto both 71 South AND 71 North and FA season hasn't even started. On a more serious side I understand that "Money Talks" but in reality, NOT ALWAYS. Realistically, we may have to overpay a tad.

Indeed.....we gain about 5 mil by cutting him. We owe about 4.5 mil in dead money but would have taken a 9.5 mil hit to keep him.
Pretty easy decision IMO. We have other fish to catch. DQ was a easy throwback.

LOL, well, we have a boat load of money so anyone looking for a payday might want to look at us.. Sure hope we don't fall for a couple of slick agents that push guys.
With that kinda money, we can pick and chose and pay the best guys right to get them.

For 2014, each team will have $10 million more to spend than it had a year ago.
Per a league source, the salary cap will be $133 million in 2014. That’s a significant jump from the spending limit of $123 million last year, especially in light of recent increases of only a million or two per year.
Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports that the official number will be announced most likely by Monday, and possibly as soon as tomorrow.
In response to recent reports that the cap will be $132 million, we were told it could be a few million higher. In the end, it’s only a million more. Still, it’s a big jump over the $126.3 million projection shared with owners during the 2013 season.
The increase is good news for teams that need cap space, like the Steelers and Cowboys. But it’s bad news for teams that prefer to keep their money in their coffers. The current labor deal requires each team to spend 89 percent of the unadjusted cap, on (for now) a three-year rolling average.
If/when the official cap numbers are released, the various franchise tags also will be set. Under the 2011 labor deal, the franchise tags are tied to a percentage of the cap.
The higher the cap, the greater the tags will be.

I think that Banner deserves some credit for not blowing the cap, but really, I think that the massive youth movement we started under Heckert is the main reason we are where we are as far as the cap goes. He (and the rest of that administration) got rid of most of the older players, plugged in a ton of young players (IIRC, we had some kind of record for most 1st year players in one of the Heckert/Shurmer years) That freed up a ton of cap space. Also, we went with young, and cheap QBs, which is where many teams spend a ton of their cap. Our starting CBs were (and are) still on their rookie deals. In fact, most of the team is still on their rookie deals, especially many positions that usually get the huge deals. That gives any team a huge break on the cap, and we are definitely in good standing from that regard.

And a reason we need to start locking down some of that talent to extensions while we have the money. If all of that youth starts getting to their 2nd contract at more or less the same time, we will have a problem keeping them.

Exactly,, what's the value of getting guyswhen they are young then once they become productive, let them get away?

I agree with this approach. The question is how many players will they go after w/ this strategy? I'd assume "attempts" w/ Mack, Ward, and Haden are givens. Not sure if the team is thinking about Sheard or Taylor at this time as well. Next year, if performance keeps making the linear progression upwards, Gordon and Cameron fall into the discussion as well. Either way-- tons of money with tons of decisions to consider is a good problem to have.
With all this cap space now, wouldn't make sense to front load a good portion of guaranteed money in the first couple of years with all the space we have.
We can do that, right?

most likely. we are probably trying to restructure, but he doesn't need to accept as I think he'll find close to his $8mil on the open market anyway (for teams that would need him to play a 4-3 DT and need him to play more snaps than we do).
I love "Attaboy" but I won't be surprised to see him cut. I just hope that we are going to be utilizing our cap money to re-sign our young star players along with going and getting more young veterans at crucial spots (and older veterans as stop-gaps where needed instead of just leaving barren holes).
Here's my list of FA targets:
OG: Geoff Schwartz, Rodger Saffold, Jon Asomoah, Travelle Wharton, Zane Beadles, Chad Rinehart
ILB: Dansby, Riley, Daryl Smith
WR: Decker, Maclin
FS: Byrd, Clemons, Kendrick Lewis
CB: Vontae Davis, Alterraun Verner, Tarrell Brown
RB: Knowshon Moreno (but really, I suspect that all RBs will be asking for too much in FA and we'll wind up drafting a couple. Unless we go cheap with Gerhart).

JC: The most expensive Browns in 2014 The release of D'Qwell Jackson leads a wandering mind to wonder: What players will cost the Cleveland Browns the most money this season? Joe Thomas' $10.9 million base salary is the highest among offensive linemen in the league. Here they are, in terms of their cash cost, which equals base salary plus any bonuses. LT Joe Thomas, $11.1 million (includes $200,000 workout bonus) LB Paul Kruger, $7 million CB Joe Haden, $6.878 million ($200,000 workout bonus) DL Ahtyba Rubin, $6.8 million ($200,000 workout bonus) QB Jason Campbell, $3.25 million ($325,000 roster bonus) WR Davone Bess, $3.067 million DL Desmond Bryant, $3.0 million OG John Greco, $2.43 million ($1.7 million roster bonus) DL Phil Taylor, $1.478 million ($728,625 roster bonus) CB Buster Skrine, $1.389 million TE Jordan Cameron, $1.389 million OG Jason Pinkston, $1.389 million A few thoughts: Yes, Paul Kruger is indeed the second-highest paid player on the team. Kruger’s base salary is the fourth highest among linebackers in the league, behind only St. Louis’ James Laurinaitis ($10 million), Jacksonville’s Paul Posluszny ($7.45 million) and Pittsburgh’s LaMarr Woodley ($8 million). Yes, Campbell ranks fifth on the Browns. And Bess sixth. Sigh. It will be shocking if either Campbell or Bess is with the team in 2014. Four of the top seven highest paid were signed in the Joe Banner-Mike Lombardi era: Kruger, Bess, Campbell and Bryant. Greco’s $1.7 million roster bonus is due the fifth day of the league year, which would be March 16. Thomas has the highest base salary ($10.9 million) among the league’s offensive linemen, and his cash cost for 2014 ranks second among linemen to Philadelphia’s Jason Peters’ $12 million. The contract extension Thomas signed in 2011 included $29.5 million in guaranteed money. ProFootballTalk.com reported that Rubin could be on the cut list due to his salary. We’ll see. Here are the 10 most expensive Browns as they fall under the salary cap, with prorated signing bonuses included in the calculations: Thomas, $12.3 million Haden, $8.9 million Kruger, $8.2 million Rubin, $8.175 million Bryant, $4 million LB Barkevious Mingo, $3.715 million Taylor, $2.575 million Greco, $2.43 million QB Brandon Weeden, $2.204 million Campbell, $3.25 million http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth

Since you brought up some guys you'd put on a target list, I have to ask and maybe you or someone else knows the answer,
Can we fill openings left by Rubin and DQ with equal or better talent for Less money? Is it even possible? Is it likely?
I get that a persons ability is subjective. Some like a Dansby for instance, but I bet we'll hear someone say he's not that great or not worth the money?
So, dumping DQ and maybe Rubin and others only makes sense to me if you can improve the position. If you happen to save some CAP space in the bargain, then that's even better.
I'm just not sure how realistic that is.

j/c
two questions
1. How long does can we keep rolling over the cap? For example: Can we have 500 million in cap roll over from previous years?
2. . If they carry over cap room from a previous year, does that increase the minimum they have to spend?
For instance:
Would we have to spend 90% of 150 million cap that we have? That would be like135 million
or...
Can we roll over 50 million of that 150 million which would bring our cap down to 100 million and we only have to spend 90 million?
Meh.

two questions

Last I heard the Browns were trying to void Bess's money, but afterwards I've not heard a peep.
Are we able to or not, anyone know? He was indeed on the non-football related injury, so why the hell SHOULD we pay him?

Bess' entire contract could be voided. Bess would have to sue to get paid his contract. It will be seen if the Browns go this route. It could be a PR problem if they do. My guess, they come to an amiable decision with Bess' agent where he gets some of the money and gets into mental counseling clinic.

This is an excellent representation of the 89% rule, IMO.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.
