Morgan doesn't play against lefties, just like Chisenhall. Francona is a firm believer in splits. I am too, although perhaps a little less. They desperately need a power RH bat to make this work, however. Giambi was used there last year (not that well). Our best hope is that Jesus Aguilar can fill that role soon.

WTF, where is Nyger Morgan again tonight!!!
agreed, who is elliot johnson and why is he playing professional baseball. He's hitting .091 for the season..i mean can Nyger be any worse than that if he tried?

As a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan, the Morgan love that you guys have in here is both astounding and comical to me. Nyjer Morgan is a bum. He tries hard and that's what hooks people, but eventually you'll come to find out that he's just not good and you can't wait to get rid of him.
Enjoy it while you can I guess, Indians fans - the flip side will be coming along shortly.

He was supposed to be gone once Bourn came back. Now, I think he may hold on to that 25th roster spot to pinch run and start twice a week or so.
Bourn and Giambi both had rehab starts in Akron last night. Johnson goes when Bourn comes back. Who for Giambi? I think they may have to give up the 8-man bullpen. With as much as it has been used, that scares me a bit.
Carrasco looked much better at the start last night. But, again, he couldn't keep it together. He probably gets 2-3 more starts, but he screams bullpen arm to me.

But we all know how much you hate milwaukee.
He's good in his role. As long as we don't need him for more them it's good. Remember, we are used to bums like 40yo Damon actually starting. Nyjer as a backup is good

The reason I have love for Morgan is he is hot right now, he is playing in place of Bourn right now. When Bourn comes back, Bourn is my starter and Morgan is the 4th/5th OF.
Maybe he did suck as a Pirate but right now he is batting .348 with an OBP .484 and 3 SB's. He should be starting no more no less.

I was a bit alarmed today when Tom Hamilton said that Masterson has been topping out at 89 MPH, and that it was causing him to become a bit of a "nibbler" in his approach. That's about 4-5 MPH off his norm. I wonder if its part of the reason why the Indians aren't willing to commit to Masterson's salary demands ($16-17M/yr).
Then, the cynic in me wondered if Hamilton wasn't parroting the company line to undermine Masterson's value in the court of public opinion. I hope not ... its probably not the case, because Masterson's getting hit pretty hard when he throws strikes. He's walking a lot of hitters too.

Masterson, per Fangraphs, had an average fastball speed of 91.6 mph last year (thrown 73% of the time). This year, he has an average speed of 88.3 mph and is throwing it more often (82% of the time). That's a bad combination to start the season for him.

That error was Mike Aviles at 3B - Santana was catching. Hard to judge Carlos at 3B since he's only played 6 games (with 1 error), but its probably safe to say that he won't make anyone forget Brooks Robinson, Graig Nettles, or Buddy Bell.

I'd like to blame his shrinking velocity on the weather, but two of his three starts have been in warmer temps. Maybe that oblique injury from last year is lingering? The loss of velocity AND command is worrisome. He's pitching like Chris Perez; always on the ledge.

Santana also just started playing 3rd this most recent off-season. He's improving, but not there yet.

Santana is a hitter, first and foremost, that they're trying to find a position for. His future is at DH, imo. I was never impressed with him as a catcher. I thought he was lazy about sliding in or out to block pitches in the dirt, had an erratic throwing arm, and flat out dropped too many pitches. If you have trouble cathing a thrown ball, you'll have more trouble catching batted balls - even more so at "the hot corner". I'll be happy if he's simply competent at 3B, but I'm not holding my breath.

I can't speak as to where he was playing in Latin ball. However, his rookie league year with the Dodgers, he played C, 2B, 3B, LF and RF. The Dodgers had made him primarily a catcher before he came to the Indians. The Indians made him solely a catcher at that point.
I'm doubting this game gets in today. Its already in delay for at least 90 minutes and it looks like this precip could turn to snow not long after that.

Here is what I found: After working out at the hot corner during winter ball and spring training, Carlos Santana will open the season as the Indians' primary third baseman, the team announced. Lonnie Chisenhall has made the club in a bench role. Here are the details, courtesy of MLB.com's Jordan Bastian: "I thought we could be the best team with Carlos and Lonnie. I'm not exactly sure how that's going to play itself out," said manager Terry Francona to Bastian. Santana, 27, has been a catcher for the last eight years, including the last four at the MLB level. He also played some first base for the Tribe these last few seasons. Third base will not be a completely new experience to him -- Santana originally signed as a third baseman before being converted to a catcher in the minors. Santana hit .268/.377/.455 (137 OPS+) with 20 home runs last season and he owns a career 130 OPS+, but Cleveland can afford to move him out from behind the plate thanks to the emergence of Yan Gomes. Gomes, 26, hit .294/.345/.481 (133 OPS+) last season, his first with the team, and took over as the regular backstop with Santana at first or DH. The 25-year-old Chisenhall has hit .244/.284/.411 (94 OPS+) with 23 home runs in 203 games with the Indians over the last three years. He has failed to grab hold of that third base job, but he has some power and would be a useful left-handed role player. Chisenhall could also be a late-inning defensive replacement for Santana at third. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-base...g-third-baseman

They sent him down with Bourn back.
Axford really bounced back after that blown save in Chicago. That 1-out double wasn't great, but the K and ground out that followed was nice.

Wonder how long they keep salazar in the rotation the way he's pitching...I still don't think he's starting material..he has horrible control, gets rattled easy and he don't even have the velocity he had last year...he screams short guy or setup/closer. I think he needs sent back down along with carrasco to work some things out..those two are costing us games we should win

It's true. He has been bad so far. I think he has it, just a lil bit of nerves, and early season funk.
I think it's crazy that theyve been as competitive as they have with the top 5 batters all hitting sub .220 Thats crazy. If and when they start hitting...its on.

yeah, swisher might be the worst fa signing ever...he is so lost at the plate and santana has huge holes in his swing because of his stupid footwork, but yeah if the top part of the order where you should be getting production starts to come around..this team will be strong. the way it is now we aren't going to score enough to win alot.

The reason Swisher was even put into the 2 spot last year continues to boggle my mind. He should be 5-6 IMO after failing to be worthy of the cleanup job.
I guess this is what happens when you need to try and prove the contract. Personally, I think Brantley need to be the #2 guy. He has speed, puts the ball in play, and can protect other batters with his ability to get on base.
Bourn Brantley Kipnis Sanatana (ugh) Swisher Gomes Murphy Chisenhall Cabrera (I'd be fine with giving him his outright release and bringing up Lindor, I won't be surprised if something like this happens-- he's done)

I was wondering if someone can tell me how to listen to the games on line? I tried I-Heart radio and they don't air the game, they switch to national broadcast. Thanks in advance.

yeah i agree about asscab as well..watching his diminished range at short is painful. Almost peralta like. I think you get something for him while you can. But I really want to see Lindor.

That would be a good lineup.
But the Indians need to sign someone at the corners that can hit. Make a trade, be an early buyer or something. Need a big bat on one of the corners.

Most of mlb needs a big bat on the corners. We scored 5th most runs in mlb last year and I'll bet we finish similar this year.

A healthy Hafner, 2007?
Or as some people may suggest, a steroid full Hafner, 2007.

Because most people want their closer to have horrible control, velocity issues and to be rattled easily.

he's usually fine for a couple innings, had you read all my posts on him you'd know thats what I've said. He drifts mentally during the course of the game. Salazars issues are all self made. He has an outstanding fastball and 1 offspeed pitch, that don't get you very far as a starter, but usually all a closer needs. I think he'd be fine in a setup or closer role where he only has to give you an inning or two max. I see him as possibly becoming a pretty decent pitcher with work, I just don't think he's a starter at this point. So I'd move him around before sending him down.

J/C Buehrle is absolutely smoking the Tribe today. More errors, weird hops and not making plays are things that are killing us lately. Not to mention, we can't hit. At all....... Three hits over 6 innings. Why bat Cabrera at lead off? And Swisher at the two? Those guys swing at bad pitches or watch strike three. This team needs to wake up!!!

I think its time to shake up the lineup, move Swisher and Cabrera down in the order. I also think they should go with more of platoon at 1B, 3B, and SS because right now Swisher and Santana cannot hit lefties (combined .104 avg) and Cabrera can't hit righties (.143). Get more AB's for Chisenhall, Raburn, and Aviles. I know its early, but these games count - two more wins vs Detroit last year and we would have been Central champs instead of getting that stupid play-in game with Tampa.

I definitely agree that they should move them both down in the order. Looks like Bourn is back in the lineup today. They just posted the order for today's game on Twitter and Bourn is leading off, then Swisher. Cabrera is batting 6th. Although, I think he should be batting 8th or 9th. He has been getting more and more disappointing with every plate appearance. He struck out on a horrible swing in the 9th and Swisher watched strike three again.
