Outside of the overall bullpen performance, nothing is going well for this team.
Starting pitching is terrible.
Offense is a joke.
Defense? What defense?
It's time Francona makes some changes and it starts with the batting order. And where the hell is Lonnie Chisenhall? I'm not saying the guy is the savior for this team but he is the only one hitting the ball with some consistency. PUT HIM IN!

Another guy that swung the bat really well last year - Ryan Raburn - is struggling to get at bats this year because of the addition of Murphy. Whatever Tito does, he has to get Santana out of the clean up spot, imo. Despite his showing last night (HR, 3 RBI), you can't have a .140 hitter in the 4-hole.

I guess anyone as long as they produce more than Santana, but I am referring to your stereotypical cleanup hitter. We don't have that.
And I've said this before....Swisher has no business batting 2nd. No business, whatsoever.

Santana is being struck by the baseball gods to start the season. His BABIP to start the season is .159. That's not sustainable and a sign of horrible luck. Figure that it should be a little under double that.
He's had a decent swing and has hit some balls hard in the past week. I wouldn't move him at all right now, as I think he's going to bust out very, very soon.
Swisher, however, I have nothing for. I'm not a huge Cabrera fan, but I'd switch him and Swisher in the lineup right now.

Another bad game last night and a likely Kipnis DL stint from it. Not exactly what the doctor ordered. However, it may give the opportunity to shake up the roster a little bit. They already announced that Carrasco is going to the pen. Bauer will be coming up on Tuesday, I'm guessing with CC Lee likely heading back to Columbus. This Kipnis injury will allow Jose Ramirez to return. I'd also end Elliot Johnson (who isn't even being used) and give some ABs to Jesus Aguilar from Columbus. See if there is something there. I know that its only 8 ABs, but Giambi has looked to have an even slower bat so far. Aguilar may be able to take that role right now.

One thing I never understood is why we moved Kipnis to 2nd base. We have a lot of middle infield prospects in the minors but very few outfield prospects. Plus, I think 2nd basemen take more wear and tear than outfielders do.

Johnson's time is probably short, the Indians have recalled Jose Ramirez from Columbus to play 2B. He was fun to watch last September, IIRC. Good speed.

what a waste of a performance by Kluber. Axford stinks. People complained about Perez, but he is better than Axford. Perez saved close to 90% of his chances. Axford now has 2 blown saves in a little over a month. Just can't lose games like this today. I kind of figured we would be mediocre this year. Didn't make any upgrades, still have uneven players in Santana, Swisher, and Cabrera. Good job Dolan's, we have a great core to build around. They wonder why no fans go to games. Fans aren't stupid.

I'm losing patience with the whole "closer" concept. Kluber was dominating today. I don't care if he had 110 pitches, you can't take the ball out of his hand for the 9th. The blown saves, the 9th inning bombs by opposing teams, the guy who comes in and walks the first hitter in the 9th of a close game - I'm really sick of it - it happens way too often. It shouldn't be that hard to get three outs. Damn!

I agree. he should have been given the opportunity to close the game out. But it's time to move Cody Allen in there. Axford will always be a guy to blow a handful of games each year. He will save 35 for you, but blow 7. way too many for me. Plus he walks too many.

Exactly. I blame this loss on Francona as much as I do Axlerod. I would've yanked him after the 6 straight balls. Eric Wedge blew numerous games by going by the book and bringing in the closer.
That was poor managing today. Furthermore, why is Swisher still batting 2nd in the lineup?

Good win indeed. Losing the previous two games late really hurt. It's good to get this one and lock it down.
Detroit is playing well, almost too well right now. It stinks, they usually come out slow in April and eventually get better. But as of right now, they're in midseason form. The Indians can't afford to play poorly much longer. The bats and back end of the bulley need to wake up a bit.
I don't think we need to win the World Series or even get into the playoffs to consider this year worth it, but they've got to at least be a contender for the division or wildcard late into the season. As of now, we may be playing out the string at the beginning of June. Need to go on a winning streak soon.

I would try to gut the team if they don't make any trades to improve. The problem is Bourn and Swisher have such awful production for their salary, not to mention their age. I've really seen enough of Santana, he's always swinging for the home run. He would be the first to go. Would start Chisenhall full time, even against lefties. Masterson, Swisher, Cabrera, Bourn, Santana would be all on the chopping block. Even if they all play up to potential, this team isn't good enough to beat Detroit.

Carlos Santana is one of our best players. Even in his slow start he is getting on base at a .316 clip. He will be fine and we are talking about a player who is in his prime and has been one of our 2 best hitters each of the last 3 seasons. Start gutting with him?

He's not the type of player I like. Give me Micheal Brantley who is steady for the most part, and doesn't go into slumps like Santana. He's a career .247 hitter, I just don't see him ever putting it together where his swing is consistent. I don't see him ever being an all star, he could have a swisher type career, but he has been moved a few times himself. I think we could do better.

his batting average will never be stellar because he is patient and waits for his pitches (to a fault sometimes). but, he was a 137OPS+ batter last year with a .377 OBP and a .455 SLG with a 4.3 WAR. It was debateable between him and Kipnis for who was the better hitter on the year (and Kipnis is streaky himself).
I like Brantley, but, before this season, you are talking about a player who was barely above league average vs. a legitimate star hitter (defense is another story for Santana). If Michael's gains this year are legit (let's have it play out), then I will be extremely happy with him, Kipnis and Santana all in the lineup.

this year? no doubt he is struggling.
the 3 years before this year? he was one of the better hitters in the AL.

I don't think any of those are too sabremetric, are they? I could get into that he was #6 in win probability added and such, but those are deeper dives.
Santana has been an elite hitter before this season. It amazes me how much fans do not appreciate him just because his BA is a bit low (not this year - this year he hasn't been good).

now, that viewpoint I support. he is struggling, throw him 6th or 7th and see if lessening the pressure point helps kick the slump. or motivates him. just do something to try to change whatever is going on with him this year.

My lack of appreciation of Santana has nothing to do with his BA (but you're right, that's mediocre too). He doesn't pass the eye test, seems unintelligent, worthless on defense, and his OPS is average at best. Don't really care about his OBP alone...just means he walks a lot (and he does have a good eye at the plate, I'll give him that), but so what? It's not as if he's a skilled baserunner. I just don't think that he's a difference-maker, and far from "elite" or "legitimate star".
