Elaborate funeral

Carl died, leaving a will that provided $30,000 for an elaborate funeral.

As the last of the visitors departed the affair, his wife Judy turned to her oldest friend and said, "Well, I'm sure Carl would be pleased." "I'm sure you're right," replied Faye, who then lowered her voice and leaned in close, "Now, how much did this really cost?"

"All of it," said Judy. "$30,000."

"No!" Faye exclaimed. "I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?"

Judy replied, "The funeral cost $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The wake, food and drinks were another $500. The rest went for the memorial stone."

Faye computed quickly. "$22,500 for a memorial stone? My God, how big is it?"

"Two and a half carats."

$22,500 should get someone a giant rock! My 1/3 carat was about $500 and it's a fairly good quality too. So, multiplying that by 8 (to get just over 2 1/2 carats) is still just $4,000.

LMAO! I say just $4,000 like I've got that amount handy to throw around on a ring. LMAO!

Actually, I just did a quick search....some are that high. Must be color, cut and quality issues. That's just stupid crazy for a diamond.

That's how much I spend on rocks every 5 years just so Jo will keep me.

It doesn't work that way though. The bigger the rock, the more valuable it is because it is harder to find a bigger rock. Cutting a diamond in half doesn't cut the value in half. You lose almost half of the original value of the diamond by cutting it in half even though you have two smaller pieces of equal size to the original diamond. Smaller diamonds can be common however larger ones are rare.

Yes I know this. I am a bit of a jewelry junkie. I was just stating that for 2 and 1/2 carats, she WAY overpaid. I just gave a rough/quick estimate on price.

I guess unless this thing was certified completely flawless (or like the "Leo" diamond at Kay Jewelers) then MAYBE. But a good 2 1/2 carat should be around $7,000-8,000, maybe a little more.

But since the vast majority of people cannot see the "flaws" in most diamonds with the naked eye, and mostly only jewelers have the equipment to see those flaws, I won't be purchasing anything that expensive. (Despite my fussiness about my diamonds)

Pdawg~Jo told me you need to spend more, but this time, send it to me!

Diamond pricing isn't linear though.... it's more like exponential because bigger diamonds with good characteristics are very rare. You could find a hundred 1/4 carat stones with those characteristics before you fine one 2 carat stone...

Actually, she probably didn't get ripped off. A round, ideal cut ,2 1/2 carat diamond that is colorless or near colorless is upwards of $45,000.
