Matt Cassel is re-signing with the #Vikings, per source.

This is actually pretty big news as everyone thought Cassel was going to go to the Texans and link up with his old Patriots coach Bill O'Brien. Cassel would've then started while they either waited on a QB or drafted Bortles and sat him.

Dang, this sucks. Was hoping he'd go Houston and they'd take a flyer on him.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Dang it! I was really hoping to land Shields. I think I would pass on Talib. Wants top CB money, he is 28, has injury concerns and off field issues.
Would rather see us go after Verner, Thromond III, or Munnerlyn. Possibly Davis or Rogers-Crommartie.

Yeah, I wanted Shields too. Talib is talented, but man, he worries me in a lot of ways, and will be extremely expensive.
This is supposed to be a deep draft for CB, and I think that we'll probably go the draft route.

Fine by me. I'd rather not sink any hard money into a cornerback. Sherman and Haden are going to be free agents next year, so the price will really rise between the two of them. I think it's best to sink the money into Haden next year rather than spend it on a strong #2.

I agree with you to a point. We have over $50 million cap space and the cap is going up another $10 million next year. We have holes to fill and money to spend. If players can be signed on reasonable deals (or even a little more than reasonable) at positions of need we should try and get them.

Crazy money. Players of his age and level signed for half of that just a year ago.
Keenan Lewis signed for 5years and 25mil with a 6mil SB with the Saints then He's the better CB to boot.
We should have done more last offseason. At this point I'd rather look to draft a CB.

The thing that scares me is if Shields is a 10Mil per then what is Haden. We need to get that deal done now.

I agree. I just don't want us to put 8 figures into a CB and say something along the lines of "We already invested 8 figures into a CB, why pay Haden." or something stupid like that. I really want to give them the benefit of the doubt in this position, but at the same time... Well, it's the Browns.

These price tags on CB are nothing new. Its like LT. QB, DE. You will pay through the roof in free agency. You're much better off if you draft these spots early.
This is why I'm sick of drafting RB and WR early. We can get these spots in free agency at a much better value. Use our early picks at the $$$ positions.

You mean like signing Everson Griffen to a contract that guarantees him $20 million even though he has 14.5 sacks in four years?
I am really glad we aren't in that market because Griffen might have crashed the market.

It looks like the Dolphins are going to sign Brandon Albert and he is going to get about $10 million per year. If Veldheer, Collins, Monroe, and Saffold want similar money we are likely out of their market.

Man I think you are 100% right on that. And I bet a lot of them are front end loaded so there isn't a CAP HELL mess to clean up later.
I wish we'd do some of that Like maybe front load a contract with Byrd and Ward giving each 20 mill up front spread over 2 years or so, then a reasonable number not guaranteed.. (not sure they'd accept it and I don't think I have the numbers right)

IDK not sure every one of them will not command that kind of money, just not enough teams with that much to burn on one guy... if they do then other opportunities will be available to us at a reduced rate,

Good for Delmas. 1 year 3.5. We should have brought him in. Better than the 9mil per Byrd is rumored to want.
I didn't dispute that he would only get a 1 yr deal. Only that we should bring him in.

Way to take one example and act as if it an end-all.
I think Coyote made some decent points. I am also sick of drafting WRs and RBs high in the draft. Those positions are easier to fill than others.
I get what he is saying.
Coyote: Keep posting, brother. I have noticed that you have made some really good points in your short time here.

Scratch Riley off the list of possibilities of replacing DQ. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/10/report-perry-riley-to-re-sign-with-redskins/Report: Perry Riley to re-sign with Redskins Posted by Curtis Crabtree on March 10, 2014, 11:26 PM EDT New York Giants v Washington Redskins Getty Images Perry Riley has racked up 244 tackles and 6.5 sacks over the last two seasons with the Washington Redskins. Apparently that production has made Washington want to keep him around. According to Dianna Russini of NBC News 4 in Washington D.C., Riley has agreed to a deal to return to Redskins. Riley has started 40 straight games for Washington since taking over as a starter midway through the 2011 season. He’s been a tackling machine for the Redskins ever since. Riley has compiled 319 tackles, 7.5 sacks, a forced fumble, an interception and 19 passes defensed over his first four seasons in D.C. With London Fletcher heading into retirement – 99 percent of the way into retirement at least - Riley appears poised to take the reins as the leader in the middle of Washington’s defense next season.

https://twitter.com/RavensInsider/status/443371993241747456Sources predict Arthur Jones will sign with the Indianapolis Colts as soon as today. Expected between $6 million and $7 million per year Stupid Colts are crashing the market lol Jones is a fine player, but he's basically the Ravens version of our Hughes, but still gets Des.Bryant money. Whoever thinks Rubin is overpriced at 7.5mil, think again.

As I said elsewhere, you have to rethink what you consider a fair number and overpaid. Teams have to pay more. We are close to the CBA 3 year average. Teams have to get to that 89% number.
If not the Players association gets the money and distributes it to the players on the team. I don't know about you, but I would rather spend the money on some guy I think might actually help us rather than bump Christian Yont by $300,000 a year.
Why is it so hard for you to understand that the salaries of the mid level to good players are going to go up?

Did you even read my response?
I said I get it, but it's still bad value if YOU are the team that pays the NEW market price. I'd rather save that extra money to re-sign our own core guys and fill as many needs as possible with VALUE signings.
The cap game is still the same if BOTH cap and salaries go UP...and while the cap goes up by what? 10?15%? compared to last season, what we're seeing now is 50%+ in salary bumps compared to last offseason. That's still lots of bad value. At least with the Colts signings. The whole league is laughing at them already for the contracts they dish out, nfl.com alluded to it in the Dansby piece.
If you give part time players like A.Jones (or Hughes), who only played 51% of snaps in his BEST season to date 6-7mil/season you will run into problems sooner or later. I'd rather spend 16mil on Revis or 9-10 on Byrd, although I think that's crazy too, but at least you get an elite 3 down player and not a "good" part time player.
Value isn't thrown out the window just because the cap goes up, go ask the Steelers who just had to cut their best pass rusher.
Was this so hard to understand for you?

Report: Bucs, Michael Johnson have already agreed to deal Posted by Michael David Smith on March 11, 2014, 11:15 AM EDT Technically, NFL teams aren’t allowed to reach an agreement on a contract with an unrestricted free agent until unrestricted free agency officially opens today at 4 p.m. Eastern. In reality, teams and agents have been negotiating for the last three days, and in some cases the agreements are already done.
In the case of the Buccaneers and free agent defensive end Michael Johnson, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that they’ve already agreed to a five-year, $43.75 million deal, with $24 million guaranteed. The deal can’t be announced until free agency officially opens in five hours, but that doesn’t stop the two sides from having an understanding.

On NFL Network they are saying Veldheer is going to sign with the Cardinals.
What are the Raiders doing? They have the most cap room and seem like they are going to lose two of their best players in Veldheer and Houston. Why didn't they franchise one of those guys?

I thought teams and players can agree to a deal, but not officially sign it until 4pm. Something along those lines.

No No Dave, I'm not saying it isn't so, I was thinking they weren't allowed to release that info until after 4pm. Which the article confirms is true.
I wonder what kinda punishment will be handed out and to whom?
