Looks like Farmer's intention is the fill that hole in the draft. We have the ammo and certainly can't fill every hole in FA so I'm not worried... yet.

Of course we can...we just don't do it.
Prices have gone down and are mostly fair out there. We could easily sign half a dozen 3-5mil players and still roll over 10-20mil into next year's cap.
This happens with every new GM/FO...they get an ego and dream about "their legacy" and daydream about the smart draft picks they'll make instead of just taking the finished products from FA in their prime.

That's a very pesimistic view. We'll have to agree to disagree... I think Farmer is doing "ok" so far although it's still early. I think there are 31 other teams out there and we really can't just get whoever we want. I'm not a fan of just spending money like a drunken sailor because that always comes back to hurt you.

as for guards...
We do still have Gilkey, Pinkston, and Greco...
We do still have bodies that have played the position (albeit Gilkey played one game...but played very well)

Great deal for TB....this guy was arguably the 2nd/3rd best option at C in FA.
Not good news for Mack. He won't even sniff at 7-8mil annually imho after that contract and if he did, we'd still match easily. If he wants out, he has to come to grips that signinng that tender is the best move money wise short term and long term as he gets out next offseason...IF he stays healthy and has another good season that is.
One thing's for sure, he won't get the long term deal he wanted.

He'll probably get a long term offer ....... from the Browns. I suspect that if he has to return to the Browns after a lack of interest by other teams that they'll be able to work out a deal. It will probably take $15-$20 million in guarantees (with probably #12 million up front) but I think that it will get done.

Django, I mentioned in another thread that I thought we hadn't really filled any of the needs we had going into the offseason as of yet.....Whit/Dansby replaced solid guys we let walk. To be honest I'm pretty underwhelmed by this FA so far.....long way to go, but time is ticking. I really am not seeing a plan that makes this team competitive going into next year.....no way we address all of these needs in the draft. I'm beginning to fear Farmer might be more of the same.
Question to all......don't we have to spend money this year to be in compliance with the new CBA?

Draft Richardson from Tenn in the 3rd and you have your big strong mobile guard for this zone scheme. cheap and as good as anyone that was in the fa market.

Free agency just started Tuesday. There are good deals still to be made. Whether or not we make them is the question. Last year Karlos Dansby didn't sign with the Cardinals until May and he was one of the best signings.

I believe all teams MUST spend, at minimum, 89% of the Salary Cap, which is $132M (+ / -).

No doubt.......why I noted "thus far." As Django alluded to though, waiting for the right guy at the right price can leave you holding the bag. We shall see how it ends, but we had a plan last year going into FA and executed it.....haven't seen that from these guys yet.

With the Raiders adding Tuck ,Woodley and now Tarrell Brown, we are offically having the worst FA so far out of all teams with some money to burn What the hell are they thinking? More UDFAs? More "let's see how last year's 7th rounder progresses"? Shelley Smith and Tarrell Brown TOGETHER would have cost us as much as Hawkins and, unlike Hawkins, without long term committment to boot This really isn't rocket science. Farmer is either incredibly stupid or he's outsmarting himself...my money is on the latter

That's my point. What are they waiting on??? There is no way to fill all of our holes in the draft. This reeks of previous regimes "build through the draft" crap that is really just code for an excuse to suck.
I believe you build your core through the draft, but the good teams (minus the Squeelers) have figured it out.....you have to use FA to help build your overall team.

It appears that the Browns have used the same tact as last year when it comes to veteran contracts.
Dansby's contract is for 4 years/ $24 million
Signing bonus of $6 million, with $12 million guaranteed.
1st year salary is $4 million, fully guaranteed, and his 2nd season is also $4 million with half guaranteed. This contract is, in essence, a 2 year deal. His 3rd and 4th seasons are slated to be $6 million each, but I find it unlikely that he will see those years.
Year 1 cap cost is $5.5 million, with $10 million in cash. Year 2 is also a $5.5 million cap cost with $4 million in cash.
If he is cut in year 3, he will cost $3 million against the cap at that point.
Whitner's deal is a 4 year deal worth a potential total of $28 million.
He has $14 million guaranteed. His signing bonus is $$9 million. His salary starts at $2 million in year 1, and is fully guaranteed, and his 2nd season has a 50% guarantee of his $4 million salary. His 3rd and 4th seasons are $6.2 and $6.3 million. (non guaranteed)
His 1st year cap cost is $4.25 million, and he accounts for $11 million in cash, Year 2's cap cost is $6.25 million, with $4 million in cash.
After that, his cap number jumps, but if he is cut in year 3, he would have a cap hit of $4.5 million. If he stays, they he would cost $8.45 million against the cap, and $6.2 million in cash. Year 4 would be $8.55 million against the cap, and $6.3 million in cash.
The Browns structured these deals intelligently. They can get out in 2 years and save money against the cap is need be.
Hawkins deal doesn't show up yet, but it appears to be drastically front loaded. That is good on our part, because we can lessen his future cap impact while still giving him a contract that the Bengals are not certain to match.
Anyway, thought I would break this down. We need to spend a certain percent of the cap in cash, and these deal help accomplish that while still maintaining our flexibility.

 Raiders let their good RT walk, signed a name guy to replace him just to have him fail a physical and get sent back to the Rams. Raiders are Browns'ing this FA period more than we are. I am hoping that Tate leaves without a contract, and we sign another good WR and CB. RB is not a position that we should address before the draft.

Look. I'm SURE that Pettine and O'Neil know exactly the type of CB they want opposite Haden. I'm SURE Farmer is listening. I'm also SURE that the ONLY CB we've been interested in was Revis, the best in the business and most expensive.
The rest are dime a dozen Corners. I'm pretty sure we'll end up with a Corner with SIZE and Press Coverage talent within our first 3 picks. That's the path we SHOULD go now. Smart move.
This OG class of free agents is the WORST in years. When a Lavoa is one of the highest paid FA's, that says alot about Guard quality. It SUCKS. OG is the one place I thought we should NOT TOUCH in FA. We'll end up with a day one starter inside our first 5 picks.
Wind is it's coming down to Guaranteed $ with Tate. This should get done soon, along with Moats. Two more SOLID signings.

I don't think Ray is the person responsible for crafting the contracts. He and Pettine identifify the player targets, the entire team decides how much money it is going to take, then the actual structure of the contract probably comes from Alec Scheiner President

Tuck and Woodley will suck this year. We will see a MASSIVE drop off in production from them his year. Tuck might be okay, but Woodley will be terrible.
Also wasn't there an article about how UDFAs have produced more pro bowlers than rounds 3-7? I don't understand your hatred towards UDFAs. I'd rather have them contribute to special teams than some 10 year scrub vet.
