Farmer was at Bridgewater's as well. I haven't read any reports on Carr's yet.

That's not how I understood it. I understood that Farmer was at the Louisville pro day to see Calvin Pryor, not Teddy Bridgewater. He didn't interview Bridgewater but he did speak to Pryor. At UCF's pro day, he watch Bortles' performance, spoke to him AND scheduled a private workout with the Browns.

I was just pointing out Farmer was there. I know nothing of him going to talk to Pryor. I do know he met with Brown.

Still waiting on the forty time for Preston Brown, but the linebacker did improve his vertical jump (34.5 inches) and bench press (26) marks from the combine. Brown met extensively today with Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer and Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson.

Do you have a link to your facts? I haven't seen or heard anything about possible visits and would love to read about them.I don't follow a ton of people so I might have missed it. Also, do you know if anyone was at Carr's today?

It also reminds me of the previous year when I argued strongly for Big Ben. We moved up to take K2. I liked K2 way better than the Leon pick, but I wanted that franchise QB.

Had we drafted tiny ben we'd now have a sexual predator as our starting QB. No thanks. KW2 would have been a stud for us if he had stayed off that damned bike. That ONE wrong move killed what could have been a stellar career.

If they make a move for Schaub it's fine, but I'm really hoping they just draft two quarterbacks in the draft. Not necessarily with the #4 pick but even if we do take a gamble on one of the QB's at #4(and make no mistake it would be a gamble)I'd like to see them take another later in the draft. Problem with that is we'd in essence have three rookie QB's in this offense. Hoyer doesn't know our offense anymore than a rookie would. I suppose he's got a slight leg up because he can work on learning it now if he chooses to. But as far as actual reps in the system go, he's in the same boat as the rookies would be. Still, IMO that's our best bet. I can see the allure of bringing in a guy that already knows what's what in this system though.

Also, should our guys decide to pass on a QB at #4 because they aren't absolutely SURE Bridgewater or Bortles is their guy, that will be fine too. Adding a receiver to bookend Gordon is a perfectly reasonable move. Does anyone think the Bengals regret taking Green? Of course not. If we take an offensive tackle that would be fine as well. All I care is we get a great player at #4.
Defense, WR, OL, QB, doesn't matter to me. I could see them taking Greg Robinson or Jake Matthews, moving Schwartz in to guard. As long as #4 can PLAY it's all good.

If we do take Bridgewater and he becomes the next Brady Quinn, how many Bridgewater pimps will suddenly crucify Farmer for selecting him? Or blame the coaches for his failure? None of these guys are a sure thing. I don't mind them taking a QB there. They just better be SURE about him. Or this time next year we will once again be wondering what our brand new GM and HC will do....

Frankly, I think that we need to keep drafting QBs until we finally get it right. Maybe not exclusively in the 1st round ...... but until we find that right guy, we need to keep trying.

Knowing what we know now, those are definitely contradictory statements. Obviously if we knew what Rodgers would become everyone would have drafted him. I would argue that the reason Rodgers, like Brady, is where he is now is because he fell in the draft.

Quote:

Saying Leon deserved to be drafted over Rodgers because the latter had flaws is uneducated. Leon had a more red flags than almost any player I have seen in recent history.

This seems like something that might be hard for you to grasp (I am not trying to patronize you. I am seriously questioning why you don't understand the concept.) I don't know why. But. . . at the time if the majority of people were just drafting the best player available Edwards should have gone before Rodgers. Rodgers was a flawed prospect.

More red flags than almost anyone, how? Dez Bryant, Justin Blackmon, Vontaze Burfict, D.J. Hayden, Janoris Jenkins, Tim Tebow, Michael Crabtree, and Bruce Irvin all come to mind as players who had more red flags in recent draft histroy (for different reasons).

The only flag Edwards had was his "occasional" dropsies...

He's ALWAYS been the guy that would make the unbelievable catch, because it required focus, and drop the wide open slant on 3rd and 2, because it didn't require any...

Rodgers coming out of the Cal system, some thought he might be another Joey Harrington, he was only seen as a #1 pick because he and Smith were clearly the best passers, with Jason Campbell being taken right after Rodgers (Washington traded up) and then the next QB not being taken till the 3rd round (Frye)

Had SF taken Rodgers, Smith would probably also dropped to GB, as they BOTH were seen as very flawed coming out...

At the time taking Edwards over Rodgers was the right decision. Maybe you wanted Rodgers, I don't know. But I am guessing if you polled most front office people at the time the overwhelming majority would have taken Rodgers.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

cfr...nrtu...

Some have better 20/20 hindsight than others.

Concerning Aaron Rogers and the 2005 draft, when the Browns drafted Braylon Edwards at #3...as someone pointed out, Rogers fell down the draft board for good reason...as I recall some believed Rogers was not ready to start in the NFL and was somewhat of a project.

He fell all the way to the #24 pick where Green Bay took him...but Green Bay did not draft Rogers to be their starter...he was drafted as a backup to Favre.

Rogers sat behind Favre for 3 seasons not starting one game...
...2005-played in 3 games, 9/16 passing
...2006-played in 2 games, 9/15 passing
...2007-played in 2 games, 20/28 passing
...2008-started 16 games, 341/536 passing (63.6%)

Had the Browns taken Rogers as their starter in 2005 (instead of Leon Edwards) and played him before he was ready to play, how would have Rogers turned out?

Could the Browns have allowed Rogers to sit for 3 seasons before starting him?

Sometimes those with 20/20 hindsight skip right over the facts and fail to deal reality.

I'm with ya, I'm for taking 2 QB's in the draft maybe one in the 3rd and 4th rounds, Hopefully we can get A. Murray in the 3rd, ,

I'd also like to sign Buckeyes back-up Kenny Guyson see what he might bring, might be nothing more than a practice squad type of guy, but we will never know until we bring him in.

Also, if we keep adding weapons, exsisting QB will want to play here, Having Gordon, Watkins Hawkins, Camron and Tate at RB, with those weapons, FA QB's are going to look and want to play with those toys...in the past no weapons why would a QB wanna come to Cleveland and throw to Bess or musaffa, nobody and thats exactly what we got.

Build the weapons and he will come

Vers the 2005 draft - Smith vs. Rodgers on the board we were discussing this back n forth...I was on the Rodgers side as was you. That was in Jan. n Feb. what happened is after the combine Rodgers started disappearing from the top 5 in the draft as many draftnicks like Kiper and more got wind that he was not regarded as a top 10 pick. Yes, because of his 6'2" frame...why I'm wondering if JM will drop. There has not been a sub 6' QB taken in the first round of this SB era of NFL football (Vick was 6' even).

I'm surprised you are taking all the pre-draft jibber jabber as a Where there is Smoke there is Fire.

Lets put it this way...if you and I are correct about TeddyB...we won't even sniff him he'll be gone if not 1 then possibly 2 or 3. I don't think Bortles is a top 10 QB but then I didn't think Tannehill was either and there he went 7??? But JM would be the one I want if Teddy B is gone. But is he a drop back (in the draft) kind of QB. Brees dropped at 6'1", Rodgers cause of 6'2" - has the Bias ended cause of ONE 3rd round QB Wilson???

Anyways the last few weeks before the 2005 draft all talk about drafting Rodgers pretty much ended as EVERY mock had him later than 10 so the discussions ended. I myself started pimping Merriman once that happened. Draft discussions in February change so much by the time April rolls around. I know some around here to discredit me about the draft will bring up Everett Brown who I pimped early February but by April he dropped out of sight as a top pick and I respected the knowledge of that and started to pimp Orakpo for our pick the last 3 weeks or so. Of course all remember the Everett Brown thing and totally disregard my Orakpo urging come draft time.

Just like Kipers mocks change. All those draft nicks speak to GMs and get info here n there and pretty much call it when a prospect drops.
But usually its from info from GMs who are not in the top 5-10 picks that they get the info from. Farmer is no dummy. He is a first time GM but he has been involved with many drafts and keeps mum and lets nothing out unless he wants it out there. All these writers including Mary Kay are just blowing spit wads against the wall hoping one of them stick and they can say - SEE I CALLED IT!

We might not take a QB at four...but we like someone. Farmer has confirmed that much and has been mum every since. We will target that QB and get them. I am sure of that. Or we might drop back a little bit and take them. Or we just might say heck we like him so much we can't take the chance of him being there at 26. What if we love n I mean love this Garafalo kid (sp) do we just take him at #4? You know what if he is THE GUY we want - Frankly I don't care where we take him as long as we get the guy we WANT!

Watkins is no BE...so even if we took him (I would prefer Robinson) it won't be a mirror pick. Obviously we know who our #1 is. Its a Julio Jones pick btw Atlanta is no closer to a championship with that investment.

Schaub Hoyer...now leaks are Texans won't let him go...guess why cause we wouldn't make a trade for him All this talk about us - all they know is we "MIGHT" have contact the rest is BOZOS writing a byline and they are - HEY O'Brien knows Hoyer n Shanahan knows Schaub...yeah thats what is going to happen. They are just playing games and usually it involves the Browns cause they know with us ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN until we get stability here and they know we won't do that.

In Farmer I trust. If he messes up he will lose that trust. But I will not PRESUME he will mess up due to the Spit Wads of BOZOS.

jmho as always

If we swap Schaub for Hoyer....I don't even.

It sounds like a horrible stretch. Mary Kay has been terrible of late. I don't see one part of that little article that even remotely suggests that we are actually interested in doing this.

Just as I said it, I read this.

Mary Kay Cabot ‏@MaryKayCabot 32s
#Raiders trading for #Texans QB Matt Schaub, whom #Browns had interest in, ESPN says. Texans will get late-rnd pick. Schaub $10 mill salary

Hoyer is most likely to be the Browns opening day starter. If the Texans release Schaub then the Browns will most likely pursue him.

There will be other teams who will go after Schaub. The Raiders have been mentioned who knows what others?

If Schaub does end up with the Browns then my guess is pick four will not be a quarterback. They will take a QB later and look to develop him.

If they did take a quarterback at four there would be pressure to start him this year. Maybe the Browns do not give in to that and Hoyer and Schaub battle it out for the starting role.

Also like to add all the not thinking about Teddy B...cause we know he's going overall #1. I've always said this. I still say this and if they trade Schaub they basically are committing to this. I'm sure we scouted him intensely this past year and the guy who went there was Farmer cause it was an important task and Banner/Lombardi trusted his judgment and reports.

I think we got Bridgwater #1 on our board. for our #4 pick we will probably make a final board of 5 players. Then another set of 5-7 for our #26 pick...keeping in mind this is separate of the Big Board. Sometimes there is somebody lingering on that big board that we thought would be long gone so he was not on our small board for each slot. The real steal or the times we will see ourselves move up is because lets say we have 5-7 for the #26 pick we take one...we got another from that group at 35...the last guy in that group is still lingering and its closing in on the end of the 2nd...it is here we will trade two third round picks to move up into the end of the 2nd and get that guy.

Maybe not exact how we are going to do it...but its something close to that. We got Teddy on the Big Board as #1 but on our #4 pick board we have 5 other guys.

I still say us getting involved was more just a courtesy call and talk. We can offer a better pick than the Raiders and not get hurt. We can afford the Contract - But simply put we don't even know if he would beat out Hoyer. I'm sure Kyle has seen all the tape on Hoyer and keep in mind when I see "ALL" the tape we got tape of every practice session as well as games. He can see how he prepared as the starter for the games - How he got all up for the games through practices during the week. Leadership skills. I do not believe in Coincidences. There are Reasons we WON all 3 games Hoyer started. On a team that was 1-12 in all the other games. 3 games at 3-0 is a big enough data base to ascertain something was done amazingly RIGHT!!!

Oh and to cut off the he only played 2.25 games so the 3 doesn't count. As stated he prepared the TEAM for that 3rd game he took all those #1 reps he installed the game plan to the players. He has ALL offense and defense up and knowing they will win the game. So that when he got hurt it was Rally around the fallen leader and get the job done! Then reality hit as Weeden was the starter again during the week and they all saw the difference and quite frankly did not believe in Weeden. The Browns LOST without Hoyer.

My point in my long winded way. I'm sure Kyle Shanahan is very impressed with Hoyer as Farmer was, Pettine and anyone else studying our personnel. Yeah we'll listen to the Schaub thing but pfft it has to be the right thing for us...new contract etc. The Raider thing is for a starting position and they are willing to take over the Starter QB contract. We listened I'm sure that is how far our Interest was. If we "REALLY" wanted Schaub he'd be a Brown. Maybe they wanted Hoyer instead of a draft pick and we said - Fat Chance. Thank you but no thank you.

Jmho

There is not a chance the Texans don't take a QB now. They must have their minds made up on which QB they are going to draft. No way they jettison Schaub and not draft a QB.

except that Schaub was benched for Case Keenum last year.

(I agree though that the Texans will select a QB)

It sure looks like the ghost of Al Davis is making these deals.

From Albert Breer
@AlbertBreer: Also, Matt Schaub's contract calls for $13.5 million in 2015 and $15.5 million in 2016.

i agree. Watched him a lot-he played pro-style QB play at OSU (prob why he sat the bench) and is very accurate.

Pro Style QB? What?

The only time he wasn't rushing as much as he was passing was against a horrendous Florida A&M team.

The teams he played are as follows:

San Diego State
Cal
Florida A&M

and some mop up duty against Purdue. He had 330 yards rushing and started in 3 games. I'm not sure how you would consider that pro style. He ran the same read option Braxton was running.

I'm not saying I don't like him, but he was far from a pro style QB. There is one guy off the top of my head that ran a pro style system and that's Bridgewater. Everyone else ran some variation of the spread or read option.

I don't think that it means that they are taking a QB at #1 overall for sure. Remember, they have the first pick in every round. There will be QBs available in the 2nd and even 3rd round that will be able to do the job.

My guess is that Bortles has secured the #1 spot (despite my statement above) and it doesn't matter what Manziel does at his pro day. I don't think that Bridgewater or Manziel were ever in the discussion. That it came down to whether they would draft Bortles or a different player (Clowney, Mack, any of the OTs, etc.) and Bortles showings at the Combine and at the UCF pro day sealed the deal for them.

If the Texans want a QB at #1, it will be Bortles.

That is good news for the Browns. It makes it more likely that one of the players (and it won't be a QB) that they might consider at #4 will be there.

I can't see anyway that Schaub could beat out Brian Hoyer. If any of us could get this year's tape on Schaub that's all we need. He was so bad it was hard to believe. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I hope the "serious possibilty" was just a smokescreen. I actually believe it was. It must have been. He fell off the washed up cliff.

I've seen it before....especially in baseball. Without injury all of a sudden certain players couldn't throw the ball it was very weird. Steve Sax I think was one. He could throw from 2nd to first. Steve Blass pitcher for the Pirates...was a very good pitcher and then one day poof he was WILD THING...and no glasses would help.

This was more mental than physical - who knows what would snap him back to his previous caliber or will it continue and soon he will be out of football???

Anarchy picking a QB is not like taking another position. Oh there are good one in this draft they can get one in the 2nd round??? Not QB.

I can see them dropping back some spots possibly if they don't think over all #1 will do the trick in getting what they think is the best QB...keep in mind if they don't the JAGS probably will.

Of course if you are of the cloth that thinks there isn't a first round QB in this draft (what are the odds of basically 2 years in a row on that?) Then I understand that thought process.

Most teams pick a QB and want that QB don't go in the draft and just fill that position. They study they got "THEIR" guy and then they go for him. I expect them to do so as I expect our team to do so as well. I honestly think we are not as Desperate as the Texans would be...especially if they do this trade w/Raiders.

Peace

I can't see anyway that Schaub could beat out Brian Hoyer. If any of us could get this year's tape on Schaub that's all we need. He was so bad it was hard to believe. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I hope the "serious possibilty" was just a smokescreen. I actually believe it was. It must have been. He fell off the washed up cliff.

Look at the tape when Hoyer played for the Cardinals.... not exactly stellar.
And it's a whole new ball game this year. Coming off a big injury, playing in a new and VERY complicated offense.... Hoyer isn't a sure thing. Maybe he can be the guy. Maybe this new scheme will suit him just fine. But that is yet to be seen. I don't want to get rid of him. I'd like to see if he can learn this offense an excel. However, Farmer/Pettine/Shanahan will make the decision and have to live with the results. If they do have a QB in mind and get their man at #4, Hoyer isn't going to be under center next fall anyway. You don't spend #4 on a QB and have him sit.

#Raiders trading for #Texans QB Matt Schaub,

I'm liking this front office more each day...saying no to a Schaub deal was the right move.

There is not a chance the Texans don't take a QB now. They must have their minds made up on which QB they are going to draft. No way they jettison Schaub and not draft a QB.

The Texans signed Ryan Fitzpatrick. So they have two guys with starting experience on their roster (Fitzpatrick and Keenum). I agree with you and think they take Bortles #1 overall. I just don't think the Schaub trade makes a difference one way or another.

I am glad we didn't get Schaub. He was real bad last year. I also believe if we signed him and drafted another QB the training camp battle would be too crowded. I think that we are going into next year with Hoyer penciled in as the starter.

Now we are likely to sign Rex Grossman, who would most likely be brought in as a surefire backup.

I think that Schaub might have been worth a shot, if we could have got him at a reasonable price. (especially contract-wise)

I think that the year just steamrolled on him, and he couldn't stop it from going downhill. I'm not positive, but I think that he's worth a shot, He definitely had some really bad moments last year. However, on a new year, in a new year, with new confidence above him, he might turn things around. I think that the Raiders made a good move, because they can still draft a QB, and not have to throw him into the fire immediately. If he recovers, then they got a steal. If not, then they spent some of their cap that they weren't otherwise going to spend.

If we didn't have Hoyer I would have wanted Schaub. I think that having both was redundant.

Yes you do. Others have, even when the incumbant QB is questionable.

The Bengals Carson Palmer, went #1 overall and sat his 2003 rookie year. Kitna took every snap in 2003 and became the NFL comback player of the year.

My guess is Rex Grossman for back up, his name was on the "that's not our FA board."
