I see so he just signed it now? What is the procedure to follow? When will we know if he will be a Brown or Bengal. Thats a big hit for them to take considering they weren't willing to give him the 2 mil tender that would have kept all away from giving him a contract. This was a pretty good signing for us. It really makes Brown hurt matching it if he does. And he's their #4??? Plus they got two TE in their O
For some reason I think the matching thing was one big smoke screen...Hawkins will be a Brown

It simply means that he has signed the offer sheet, and now the clock is ticking for Cincy to match.... but, at least we now know what the numbers are, and as guessed, we structured it to make it very difficult on Cincy. They'll have to REALLY want him in order to absorb the hit we've sent their way.

This is confusing to me... is he or isn't he a Brown or is there still crap going on behind the scenes? EDIT - Nvm, thanks Purple

Bengals will wait 4 days and 23hours. They will then either let the deadline pass or they will sign a form to match the Browns offer.

Restricted FA - means they get to match any contract he signs...in many cases there also is compensation involved but because of the low Tender (equates to the round he was picked up at) there is none as he was a UDFA.
Clock ticking meaning he just Signed our offer sheet. Now that he is committed the Bengals can match or let him get aways. tick tock...of course not sure how much time is on that clock but it officially has started.

Nope they were too cheap to give him the 2 mil tender which would mean an automatic 2nd round pick in compensation...lowest tender given and reverts to when he was taken (round)... he was gotten as an UDFA so there is no compensation. Just the matching thing

Perhaps. The money is tied up on our end no matter what. So, if they aren't going to match, there is no benefit to any gamesmanship in waiting. We're on the hook for that money already.
However, if they are going to match, then at least while they wait that money is tied up for us... but, again, it doesn't matter because we have so much space, this added bit is inconsequential. So, even then it doesn't really make any sense.
About the only reason I can think of for them to wait is that it leaves uncertainty, and so we have to act on any contingency plans we have, like perhaps signing another guy who might be our 2nd choice (Edelman?). If we miss out on our second choices because we're waiting to see what happens here, then we've screwed ourselves. Conversely, we have to potentially spend twice on one position in case this falls through.

He was tendered at original-round compensation level and was UDFA, so you are correct.

Hawkins is a pure slot guy. Edelman is also a slot guy, but he runs better routes IMO, so we could utilize him on the outside (if necessary). But, best we draft that WR2 and then fill-in where necessary once injuries hit (as they often do).
------------
and: it didn't make sense to me that they would match given Hawkins is behind AJ, Marvin, and Sanu.

Probably both the same. Perhaps use them to give each other a breather... and whichever one wins the spot in camp is the starter.

It would be nice to actually have depth at receiver for once. The good teams have four or five reliable targets.

A breather? We're talking about a slot receiver, the no.3,who isn't even on the field for all 3 downs. It's really redundancy and wasteful spending to have both guys. Damn, use that money and sign a guard or two.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

I don't see any return stats for Hawkins on ESPN. If not, someone should "experience" him, he looks like Donte Hall when he has a little space.

Bengals unlikely to match offer. web page Bengals unlikely to match offer to Andrew Hawkins By Marc Sessler Around the League Writer Published: March 13, 2014 at 01:52 p.m. Updated: March 13, 2014 at 02:04 p.m. The Cincinnati Bengals are rethinking their plans with Andrew Hawkins. Free-Agent Tracker Follow all the developments on the NFL's open market with our up-to-the-minute tracking of 2014's free agents. More... NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Thursday that the team is unlikely to match the lucrative offer sheet the diminutive slot receiver netted from the Cleveland Browns, according to a Bengals source. Cleveland made it tough on their in-state rivals, floating Hawkins a four-year, $13.6 million deal set to pay the target $10.8 million over the first two years, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Matching the contract would have forced Cincy to swallow a $3.8 million roster bonus and $5.8 million cap hit for the wideout they slapped with a "low" tender. That's a pretty penny for a receiver who barely saw the field for a Bengals offense already housing A.J. Green, Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones and tight ends Tyler Eifert and Jermaine Gresham. The Browns are paying for potential. The 5-foot-7 slot receiver has averaged just 2.5 catches per outing during his 35 appearances over three seasons in Cincy. Still, he generated interest from multiple teams attracted to his occasional flashes of playmaking ability. It all but ends Cleveland's "strong push" for fellow slot man Julian Edelman. Assuming the Bengals don't change their minds, the Browns have landed an upgrade over what little production they got from Devone Bess one season ago.
And the next head coach is ......

it's not like we don't have the $$ if it's all front-loaded. and, signing both probably means the end of Benjamin (who is similar skillset, but not nearly the amount of production of either plus he's coming back from an injury).

well, we already have Hawkins signed for one. he's more explosive as another. Edelman has the one big year to his advantage and (as such) will likely cost more $$.

Hawkins is younger, faster, cheaper, and is more familiar with our divisional opponents, especially the Bengals...why WOULD we perfer Edelman?

so all this matching not matching was and still is speculation by the bozos.
Also I think the reason the Bengals would wait as long as possible...still might is not for us to Sign an Edelman out of recourse. But actually prevent us from signing anyone with the chance that we would get our guy. In hopes the Edelman's would sign elsewhere as we held off our offer.
As stated the way we structured the contract was pretty good no way Mikey matches the offer. Good one Farmer.
Now lets hope he kicks butt? Little until there is another will be #2...which means he is out there on running plays. But if miss match warrants it we could see Cameron and Hawkins outside n Little coming in on the slot..guys all over the place.

You're right he is one year older, I read it wrong earlier, I mixed up which was 27 and which was 28. He is still both faster(by about .2 seconds on the 40) and cheaper than Edelman would be.

Edelman's had two concussions in five years, dinged up entire first year, spent over half of 2012 on IR, missed 10 games (?) I think in his career.
Really only had one year healthy 2010, I would be concerned about injury

Edleman is always hurt, but Hawkins hasn't taken a lot of hits. Bottom line, we like Hawkins either better or just as much. We could still sign edlemen.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Can't blame the bengals for waiting one way or the other. Worse case scenario is we miss out on Edelman waiting to see if bengals sign him, and they do.
So which is worse missing on both or ending up signing both. Hawkins would be a lot cheaper correct? That's a lot tied up in a slot. Gordon, little, Edelman, Hawkins and benji. Carry six after we draft a wr (Watkins?). 3 little guys and 3 big wrs?
But if we miss out on both it looks a little worse. Settle on 3rd option fa?draft?

Travis isn't a slot WR though so why redundant?

That's a VERY risky structure for us 10.8 in first two seasons? 5.4mil/year? That's what Dansby gets the next two seasons too. I understand why they did it, but if he has two good seasons, he has no reason left to keep producing.
Farmer is starting to lose me. He offers some injury prone slot WR as much money (or more) as guys like Dansby, Ward, Asamoah, G.Tate, G.Schwartz, Gerhart, Jennings, L.Jospeh etc over the next two season. That's crazy, sorry....and VERY bad value.
It's most probably your typical outsmart move by a first time GM who thinks "hurting" the Bengals adds to our value, which is BS since he was their 4th or 5th receiving option...when healthy...and he'll be our 3rd or 4th at best too. Waste of attention early in the market...same with Revis. Instead of going for some real value with good players, he overspends on a "I'm so smart" gamble.
Rookie GM mistake.
Sorry to be so negative, but that's really a dumb move imho. For that money, he has to catch 60/750-850yds 3-6 TDs at least. Do you see that from him?
