I'm not trying to be the board scold - my own sense of humor can run a bit beyond the bounds of accepted civility at times - but we should remember that more than 200 innocent lives were almost certainly lost here. The passengers most likely died either when the plane went above 45,000 ft, or in a horrific dive and crash. Thoughts and prayers for those who died, and for their loved ones left behind, still wondering and hoping beyond hope.

What can we do, Dave? It's people trying to let out some emotions in a less stressful way. There is nothing unhealthy or crass about it.

We simply don't know what happened to the jet and the governments out there investigating seem to be clueless. If any of them knows anything, they ain't telling.

Lots of fingers seem to be pointing at the pilots. Now curiosity is really setting in. What were they up to? Was it the pilots? If not, who else and what were they up to? Did the brave people stand up?

Will we even know?

I find it funny that the media is immediately discounting that some of these countries (India, Pakistan, etc.) are saying that they saw nothing on their military radar... If they let this plane fly right over their airspace, you think they'd let us know that someone could get away with that?

The 8:11 AM ping is really interesting too. I wish I knew more.... They think that last ping could have been possibly from the ground, as in landed.... Amazing.

I don't have a best guess, but if I were forced to come up with something, I still think it's crashed in the Southern/Indian Ocean far enough away so that Australia wouldn't have been able to track it via military radar...

But then I have to ask myself, why? Once the plane started flying back west, to head south, there's nothing. If you're going on some murder/suicide mission, then why take it all the way out to the Indian Ocean?

The other thing is, if this thing did head north, if it went past any bigger city, wouldn't the cell phones start pinging location via cell towers? I'm not sure of which places would or wouldn't have good cell service. I suppose Burma wouldn't exactly be cell friendly...

I think in all of my life, 32 years, this might be the biggest mystery I have ever read about.

Cell sites operate on very low power and are designed to blanket coverage areas like towns and roads by directional antennas to cover sectors ( zones ). Some even have down tilt to insure they get all the signal in certain spots to insure proper hand-offs to other cells and or sites. The last thing they want, is lost power going up into the air where there are no people. At cruising height, the only way to make a cell phone call would be if the airline had equipped the normal route with Aircell coverage ( cell sites pointing into the air JUST for its intended flight path) OR you happened to have a SAT phone with you.

The idea that the pilot has hijacked the plane and landed it somewhere is pretty great. I hope that is the case even if it is in some weirdo country, it beats the heck out of being at the bottom of the ocean.

It is weird that this plane just disappeared beyond all ability of this interconnected world, with spy satellites everywhere, to find. You would think that someone, somewhere would have picked up a clue.

Didn't they take take the plane up to 45,000 ft? Can people survive at that altitude even in a plane? If the pilots were in on it, maybe they took the plane up to 45,000 ft, killed the passengers by disabling the oxygen for the passengers but not themselves, then took the plane back down and headed wherever they were going.

I dunno. Total mystery.

From the little I know it doesn't kill people to hit 45,000 feet. It just knocks them out if you are up there for a short while. I thought they had some evidence that he went up there with a depressurized cabin and then back down to knock everybody out.

Some of the experts said at 45,000 that the plane would be very difficult to operate, and to descend as fast as it would, it would be coming apart (which would be guaranteeing debris)

Sounds like they have not really gotten to the Southern part of the Indian Ocean yet though.

They will most likely find it eventually. When dealing with an ocean, these things take a lot of time, especially with this one. It took two years to find the Air France jet that went down in the Atlantic in 2009.

If terrorists did take over the plane and intend to crash it, why would they turn it around? Wouldn't they just take it straight down? It obviously didn't crash into land so it perplexes me why they would take it way out into the Indian Ocean to crash it.

My theory is that there were some "important" people on that flight and it was hijacked for ransoming/political purposes. Only a few people are still alive. Maybe they parachuted out (with a waiting boat to pick them up) and then the plane just flew until it ran out of fuel and crashed into the water. While all of these countries are looking for the plane, the hijackers sneak away unnoticed.

Or not. Regardless, it's pretty odd.

I have no idea what happened. But it would seem to me if the crash was intentional, it would be more than likely that whoever was responsible would want some notoriety, some attention brought to it. I've seen nothing thus far to indicate that.

Not unless the only thing they wanted was an invidual or group of inviduals on that plane dead. They haven't really said much about anyone on that plane being of political significance or anything like that.

Interesting read, Arps! I hope we hear more about that side of the story.

In terms of hijack/suicide and wreckage, would it be possible for the pilot to land it Sullenburg-Style in the Indian Ocean?

Get a softer "landing" and sink the whole thing slowly to the sea floor. No wreckage. Possibly cutting oxygen at 45000 feet to eliminate any possibility of people in the cabin trying to escape.

How does that correlate with the satellite ping? If you look at the arc, where on it would it have ended up then?

Remember when Payne Stewart's plane crashed? I think they determined that all the passengers had already died because of lack of oxygen (something happened to the cabin pressure), but the plane flew on for a couple hours until it ran out of fuel and crashed.

Is it possible that something like that maybe happened here? Now, it seems like, with the number of people on the plane that someone would have survived the lack of oxygen, but who knows?

Maybe the plane turned around because of some sort of malfunction causing it to lose pressure. Everyone on board had already died, but the plane flew on until it ran out of fuel.

?

He didn't really draw a diagram but if the plane turned back southwest toward Langkawi's airstrip, then how does it end up on this satellite arc that they have?

I only ask because I trust that piece of information more than anything coming out from Malaysian officials. That evidence came from a Satellite company that said they received a ping from that plane at 8:11 AM.

I guess the plane could have veered off strongly to the south and somehow ended up there, but I don't really know. It's an interesting scenario. I haven't read one that just seems totally believable. They all seem to have a moment or several moments where it doesn't seem plausible.

There are people I work with that I know have made that flight. We have offices in Beijing and dealings in Kuala Lumpur. Pretty scary. I don't think any of our people were on that plane, including the ones that live out that way.
