Here are the 10 picks from 49 to 58 out of that 2009 draft, shade your eyes:
49 OT/C Unger 50 WR Massa 51 OG Levitre 52 LB Veikune 53 RB LeS.McCoy 54 OT P.Loadholt 55 SS W.Moore 56 DL F.Moala 57 DE/OLB P.Kruger 58 OT Vollmer
It's like playing "which is (ARE) the odd one(s) out"? That's 7 very good to PB talents, one "meh/decent" (Moala) and two out of the league busts. Mangini had two picks to boot and he managed to pick the busts.

54 still pisses me off... Loadholt, I wanted him sooooo bad.

I honestly think that Veikune pick was the strangest one I've seen as a Browns fan. I was dumbfounded.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

That was the "Smartest guy in the room" pick.
Just looked up his draft profiles, he was a projected 3-4th rounder...
And yes of course, his main comparison was to.. Tedy Bruschi..
You can't make this stuff up.
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Who would have thought that 2 of the best picks in that draft would be Maiava and Carey? (Both of whom are still in the NFL)
and, remember because of some dumb roster management, Carey never played for us.

J/C - are we really rehashing all of this crap? Seriously?
It's almost better than talking about that draft at this point..
If you want to re-hash how terrible we have been in past drafts, then here is a summary article. There is a table that shows how many starters and how many 2nd contracts we have drafted from each front office regime.
http://jimkanicki.com/2014/04/27/mgbodes-browns-pick-at-35-prologue-krm/
Overall: 123 draft picks since 1999 43 became starters for us (more than 1 season) 8 have received a "2nd" contract with the Browns*
(and yes, that includes Cribbs who was UDFA. also, includes Pontbriand as a starting LS in both numbers)
2nd contract basically means started more than 4 years. Cribbs was initially signed a 1 year deal, so he received a 2nd contract right away, but it was his "big money" contract that counts here.

Why is not having Carey a bad thing?
He's never played a whole season.

I understand that people like Whitner and I understand why, last year he was better in coverage than Ward. My only concern is that Whitner has had one good year in coverage-- his contract year. Prior to that he was pretty bad, maybe even worse than Ward. Also, I think people underrate Ward's coverage ability on here greatly...but that's not really relevant anymore.
I've seen Ward get better in all aspects of his game every single year, he's younger (roughly two years), and ended up costing less.
Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for Whitner because he's on our team and he's a Glenville kid. I love the Cleveland ties to this signing, and if his coverage skills mirror what he did in 2013, that's wonderful. He seems to want to take on the role of a leader and I like that too.
I'm just afraid we opted to let a guy loose who was really coming into his own as a top, overall safety in the NFL. Time will tell.
I guess I never thought Whitner was bad in coverage since his rookie season. So I'm not sure where that's coming from. Guess it's perception, but not mine.
Be that as it may I guess. But as for Ward, I wanted us to retain him, but when they picked up Whitner, I felt like it was an upgrade.. Forget the money. it's not coming out of our pockets. Sometimes, I think we on here worry too much about what a guy costs. The ONLY reason to worry about money is if we overpay a guy and it leaves us short to pay a better guy.
We have so much CAP that I doubt that's an issue at this point.

just noting. he at least is still playing in the NFL unlike many of the players we kept on our roster. I agree that he hasn't stayed healthy and is a fringe player when healthy as well.
