As the entire NFL tries to figure out whether the Browns will draft a quarterback fourth overall on May 8, General Manager Ray Farmer insists he’s “not leaning in any direction.”

The decision, of course, will be influenced by the organization’s opinion of quarterback Brian Hoyer. A North Olmsted native and St. Ignatius High School graduate, Hoyer led the Browns to back-to-back wins in September before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Oct. 3. So far, he has rebounded well from the injury, but with only four regular-season starts in his career, there is a lot of unknown with Hoyer.

How comfortable would Farmer be with Hoyer, 28, heading into next season?

“I’m comfortable,” Farmer said today at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla. “I think that where I’m at right now, I would tell you that knowing Matt Schaub’s history personally because I was in Atlanta when he made the move, he had one start. So they come from everywhere. It doesn’t really matter. You’ve got to identify the guy that you think can do the role that you’re asking him to do. Once you do that, there’s a lot of guys that’ll come into any team this year as rookies and they’ll contribute. They’ll contribute in a big way. So here’s a guy that’s had NFL experience. He’s been in NFL camps. He has some tools to move forward with. The notion of experience is one that to me it can get overplayed. You have to identify truly what the young man is going to be asked to do and can he perform in that role. And if he can, don’t be afraid to move forward in that direction.”

Farmer said Hoyer’s success last season didn’t surprise him.

“Why would it?” Farmer said. “He was brought here for a purpose. We knew he was smart. We knew he was a gym rat. We knew he worked hard. We knew he could process. We knew he could put all the things in place. So I don’t know why it would be shocking that when he actually got an opportunity to do those things that he would do them.”

Farmer’s feelings about Hoyer don’t necessarily mean the Browns will wait until later in the first round, when they have the 26th overall pick, or early in the second round, when they have the 35th overall pick, to draft a quarterback.

The Browns could still draft a quarterback at No. 4, though Farmer said he would not attend the pro day workout of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel on Thursday. Manziel, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles and Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater are the top-rated quarterbacks in this year’s draft class.

“I will not be going to Johnny Manziel’s workout,” Farmer said. “There's definitely a schedule conflict and definitely opportunities to talk to all parties that we may or may not be interested in.”

The Browns did not conduct any formal interviews with quarterbacks last month at the NFL Scouting Combine. They also raised eyebrows because coach Mike Pettine and his top offensive assistants skipped the pro day workouts of Bortles and Bridgewater.

Farmer defended the franchise’s odd approach.

“A Pro Day of orchestrated throws, I don't know what that tells you,” Farmer said. “It's a piece of it that people blow up into this great thing. I went to a lot of games and practices this fall. I've seen them throw the ball.”

Farmer emphasized the importance of the Browns being able to stage private workouts with prospects.

“We will have our opportunities to have private workouts,” Farmer said. “Being in charge of that workout is different than being at a Pro Day where it's orchestrated and scripted.”

The Browns have been purposefully secretive about who attends which pro days. Farmer said he hasn’t been to all of the workouts that media members have reported he’s attended.

“No one really knows what we're doing,” Farmer said. “Keeping everybody guessing is a positive. There's this notion that we have to take a quarterback, that we have to do certain things. I would say be careful of the have-tos.”

This much is certain: Hoyer and project Alex Tanney are the only quarterbacks on the Browns’ roster, so they must add reinforcements this offseason. They’ll likely sign a veteran and draft a quarterback or two.

Farmer acknowledged the Browns considered making a play for quarterback Matt Schaub, who played for offensive Kyle Shanahan when he was with the Houston Texans. However, the Oakland Raiders traded a sixth-round pick for Schaub last week.

“Anybody that’s available, you’ll discuss,” Farmer said. “When you get a chance to talk about any player in that regard, you consider it. The fact that he wasn’t on the open market and Houston traded him, those things never really materialized that way.”

Are the Browns interested in quarterback Mark Sanchez? The New York Jets cut him last week after they signed Michael Vick.

“We’re interested in every player that can help us,” Farmer said. “So if the name is Mark Sanchez, you can apply that to Mark Sanchez. If the name is a different name, you can apply that to that person as well.”

ESPN analyst and former NFL GM Bill Polian said Cleveland would be the best fit for Sanchez.

But would it make more sense to bring in a quarterback who’s played for Shanahan like Washington Redskins free-agent Rex Grossman?

“Every player that we look at will fit a need for us,” Farmer said. “I probably shouldn’t use the word need, but will fit a role. He’ll have a defined way to compete and to play in our offense and our defense. It’s really about driving competition. If we think that guy can come in and compete to be a quality starter, then, yeah, we’ll definitely be interested.”

Trade talks have begun

The Browns have 10 picks in this year’s draft, so they have plenty of ammunition to maneuver via trades. Farmer has already discussed potential deals with other teams.

“Those conversations have already begun,” Farmer said. “It might be interesting. It's something to keep in the back of your mind, so some of those talks have already begun, and I don't know if there's any definitives at the moment.”

Farmer believes the Browns could have opportunities to trade up or down.

“I look at the draft as currency,” Farmer said. “A first-round pick, be it early, be it late, is probably worth five years of a good player at a relative number and same thing down the line. If you can package picks to get a better pick or a better player or somebody that you're targeting, those things should always be considered. I do think there's opportunities to move both up and back in the draft.”

Securing the top cornerback

Browns Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden created a stir on Twitter Sunday night when he posted a cryptic message and later deleted it. “It’s a crazy business,” Haden tweeted.

Haden later responded to pranksters who were tweeting that the Browns had traded him. “No they haven’t,” Haden wrote on Twitter.

Farmer put the entire ordeal to rest.

“We have no interest in getting rid of Joe Haden,” Farmer said. “That’ll make it simple. We have no interest in that at all.”

In fact, the Browns are trying to work out a contract extension with Haden.

“We’re excited to try to keep Joe here for longer than today and tomorrow, but extended into the future,” Farmer said.

Center of attention

Pro Bowl center and transition-tag recipient Alex Mack has publicly flirted with the idea of playing for other teams. His agent, Marvin Demoff, has said he believes he could craft a deal the Browns wouldn’t want to match.

Mack has until July 22 to sign the transition tag. So he could sit out organized team activities and minicamps if he wanted to protest the tag.

“Alex is well within his rights to do the things that he thinks are necessary moving forward,” Farmer said. “We're still committed to making sure he's a long-term Brown and that's really our focus.”

Despite the tactics Mack and his agents have used, Farmer still believes reaching a long-term deal is realistic.

“Yes, I'm very confident,” Farmer said. “It's the continued interaction, the continued support, the continued vibe that we're giving Alex that will inevitably prevail.”

Free-agent visitors

Farmer paused for about five seconds when asked where the team stood with former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Paul McQuistan and former Buffalo Bills defensive end Alex Carrington. Both players are free agents who visited the Browns last week.

“I will remain silent on that for the moment, but we’ll see,” Farmer said after the pause. “We’ll see.”

McQuistan has starting experience at guard and tackle. The Browns need a starting right guard, and they might also want an upgrade over right tackle Mitchell Schwartz.

So are they looking at McQuistan as a guard or a tackle?

“He has versatility,” Farmer said. “The guy played a lot of tackle last year. He’s played guard. The versatility is definitely intriguing and positive for us and it can make our minds rest easy in a lot of respects where he can possibly contribute. So that versatility is what we’re more focused on than any one specific spot saying he’s going to be this.”

Why let him walk?

Former Browns strong safety T.J. Ward revealed via Twitter last week that Cleveland offered him “nothing” before he struck a deal with the Denver Broncos as an unrestricted free agent on March 11. The Browns agreed to terms with former San Francisco 49ers strong safety and Cleveland native Donte Whitner the same day.

“It’s not a slight on T.J. at all,” Farmer said. “We recognize his talents. We recognize he’s a good football player, and at the end of the day, there are other good football players. So when you have those conversations, sometimes it works in a way that’s positive for everybody and it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t.”

I'm having a hard time not liking Farmer. Not sure if those that beat on him are beating on him because they don't like him or that they liked the previous regime better..

That he's not going to Johnny Manziel's workout after having attended Bridgewater's and Bortles'. Conflict-schmonflict, if he might be your guy, you find a way to be there.

Just a little hint...when the term Versatility is used in football and specifically OL it means backup. Even if they become a starter he's a backup filling in as a starter. The future would be a young kid developing and take that starting position away.

I seriously doubt we are looking at him to start over Schwartz at RT.

I doubt he would beat out Pinkston or Greco. But that would be open and he would get the opportunity to beat one of them out.

But more than likely he is the 6th man on the OL if there is an injury he will be the guy coming in. Versatility is important for that "ROLE" because you don't wish to change more than one position due to an injury. So if the 6th guy can play several positions the other 4 stay the same.

Oh? Why? It also seems to tell me that we're not interested in Jake Matthews or Mike Evans either.

It's funny.... it contains the exact same quotes as another, much shorter, article just posted on here, but yet this one somehow feels as if it conveys a bit more depth while not saying anything new by comparison.

Manziel did not workout at the Combine (except for the 40), while Evans and Matthews did. Besides, there's better players available at their positions if we're picking a WR or OT at 4. If we were considering Manziel at 4, I would expect them to take every opportunity to scout and talk to him.

OR

...you find a way to look the least interested you can so he'll still be there at #4 or at a minimum reduce the cost to trade up for him if that is his actual intention.

Also, Farmer stated in his interview that the media have not been accurate as to which pro days he's actually attended so you don't actually know if he went to Bortles/Teddy's pro days.

I agree with Farmer's underlying position though that pro days are basically a waste of time and the private team workout + game tape is where you will get your information.

I agree that game tape is more important than workouts, but there really is no substitute for meeting face-to-face when deciding if someone has the fortitude, mental capacity, desire, and maturity to be your franchise QB.

What a waste! Farmer basically said he is not answering any specifics. Cleveland media asked anyway. It appeared no one listen to any of Farmer's answers. Media strictly asked their five questions on their list....smh!!!

How many people thought Ray Farmer was going to give a straight answer to any of Mary Kay's and Tony's questions on who or what position they will draft at number four!!! Since Tony thinks it is important, his approach asking Farmer why none of the coaches attended a QB pro-day was comical.

With Tony's fetish for receivers, I am surprised he didn't ask Ray which receiver is a better fit for the Browns. I guess since the last three coaches and GM's have not made the receiver position a top priority he has give up.

Farmer was working on the pro personnel side right? It makes me wonder if Hoyer was his idea to begin with, could be why he won Jimmy's confidence.

If that were the case, then he would be sold on Hoyer's ability to start and would take more of a BPA approach to the draft knowing he needs a QB there as well as a plethora of other positions.

This guy is doing what he is supposed to do, and has not been achieved in Cleveland for years. No leaks and no rats running to the media as "unnamed sources". How is that "outsmarting"? Because you have no idea what he's up to? I love it. All you guys who think you are smarter than any GM in the NFL are going crazy not having "leaks" to criticize.

IMO. this guy is being as professional as he can. Meanwhile all the talking heads are putting crap out there and letting arm chair GMs eat it up. I don't think anybody out of the offices in Berea have a clue what's going on, and it is killing them.

You have used the "outsmarting" thing many times in the past. IMO if you believe these guys do stupid things just to outsmart someone else, I think you live in fantasy land. I'll wait until all the moves are made, and the draft is over before I am critical about the FO. You guys who think you are smarter than NFL GMs can continue on your self gratifying quest to act as if you know more than the professionals do. I need something to laugh at.

Agreed. For one thing he's not showing his cards on any of the QB prospects. I LIKE that. For another I'm not sure a 5'10 195 lb running QB is anything to get excited over. While he may build a career in the NFL it's more likely he becomes the next Jake Locker. Or worse..... If we take him, I'll cheer for the kid long and loud, but in the back of my mind I'll be whispering a prayer to the football gods "please don't let him be a bust".

You missed the point.

It's sounds outsmarting the way he stresses and brags that they have an entirely new scouting system in place that no one else uses in the NFL. There aren't many grading systems around and those who are, are proven, so when you brag about having invented an entirely new cocktail you better deliver as a bartender...so yes, I'm in wait and see mode too, but he has set the bar for draft weekend since he talks like he has invented the wheel.
Ultimately my point is: who cares what your system is? At the end it's about picking players and working a value system. I hear a lot of overconfidence out of insecurity with Farmer and it's not a good thing imho. The last guys were the same thinking it'd be a cakewalk and they had the right system etc (blue chip crap, "be bold" blabla) and then it turned out the game was too big for them and they were unmasked as pretenders with little evaluation skills. I think in both cases it's prancing around out of fear to act as if you belong...his "I know which QB I'd take right now" goes in the same direction. Why flex your muscles if you believe in your strength? Been there done that comes to mind and the simple fact is that Farmer is showing time and again, that he has not been there, but runs his mouth as if he's already even beyond it

As Tywin Lannister says: Any man who must say, "I am the king" is no true king. I get a lot of that with Farmer and it's a disturbing red flag for me. He sounds like a soldier made general simply out of necessitiy. His bark isn't convincing me and even less his actions. Let's not forget that he was demoted when he was made assistant GM here since he was the Chiefs ProPersonnel main man but failed there. What made him qualify as GM all of a sudden? Soldier--->general

I disagree with that. The last two regimes have tried to build a quality receiving corp. Mangini drafted two in the 2nd round in 09. They didn't work out(to say the least) but he did draft them in hopes of building a quality WR corp. Heckert drafted Little and Benjamin and then was looking at a couple WR's his final draft but they were gone so he took Weeden. He then paid a 2nd rounder for Gordon in the supplemental draft. Receivers are an increasingly important position in the modern NFL. They(along with TE's and RB's) are the one's that score touchdowns, and in today's NFL scoring is ever more important. If Farmer does take Watkins at #4 I imagine a lot of fans heads will go all esplodey. However, if he scores 10 TD's this year and catches 70+ balls will you still feel that way? How about if Gordon does something stupid and smokes a J this summer? Having Watkins on the team will look pretty good....
Not saying any of that will happen, but with Gordon one tiny little Fup away from a years suspension, WR might not be as bad a choice as some think.... and I believe we will take one at some point in this draft.

Yeah, it's like the Bridgwater pro day., there were folks in the media that took that days showing and decided that Teddy might not be as good as they thought.

I think that ANYONE can have a bad day..

Not sure why you feel he's outsmarting himself. I mean, if I wanted to mislead teams, I'd do crazy stuff.. I'd let you think I'm nuts and then do the sane thing LOL

The fact that people are guessing as to where we're going and where we've been, it's a good thing in the sense that when you're too visible about certain things, it becomes obvious, and obvious is not good for us.''

The above is the quote from Farmer directly from Mary K's article today about the Browns' not attending Manziel's Pro Day. No where does it define, categories or identify the "systems" he's referring to. He could very well be referring to internal security systems, or media handling systems just as easily as scouting systems. I see nothing where he's suggesting the application of some newly found or esoteric metric of player evaluation or scouting heretofore unknown to professional football men.

Actually what you have done here is exactly what he's trying to avoid having done to the team's statements or actions concerning players. Give some innocuous statement and have it reformulated into something you never said.

He remains disciplined in not revealing anything he does not wish to reveal for his own reasons and for the greater good of the team at this time of year. With no care whatsoever about media or fan frustrations.

Completely agree. I think Farmer has done well so far...

BUT

... the real test is how the players he picked play. Whether you are "for" or "against" Farmer that has to be the measuring stick.

Does Hawkins finally give us the reliable slot guy we've needed or not?

Does Tate provide the RB we've been missing?

Who does he pick in the draft and WAY more importantly... how do they play?

Man... seems like we are always waiting for opening day to see the reality of our situation because until we play a real snap it's just complete speculation.

I like the part of dismissing ProDay workouts as overhyped media shows....

I don't like the part of "we'll have a unique way of grading system" and "nobody knows what we're up to" talk...I mean, I'm all for it and am glad that Lombo's crap system is out the window, but it does sound a bit "outsmarting". We will see, hope it's a good system...it better be. Here's to hope

Let's be clear, this isn't personal, however, I looked in Mary Kay's report, Nat Ulrich's report and at the ESPN blog. I don't see this quote anywhere. If it really came out of Farmer's mouth please site the source.

I guess since the last three coaches and GM's have not made the receiver position a top priority he has give up.

By top priority, I meant drafting Bryant, Jones, Green, and now Watkins all of which Grossi pimped were a must first pick.

Bleeds, of course that's the ultimate measuring stick. That's why parsing every single thing he says is overkill.

Manziel did not workout at the Combine (except for the 40), while Evans and Matthews did. Besides, there's better players available at their positions if we're picking a WR or OT at 4. If we were considering Manziel at 4, I would expect them to take every opportunity to scout and talk to him.

I don't think that it matters that Evans and Matthews performed at the Combine. What matters is that Manziel didn't. He had more to prove and he passed on the opportunity.

If anyone is wondering why Bortles has moved up many mock drafts (keep in mind, mock drafts aren't the actual draft), it's because Bortles performed at the Combine and then at the UCF pro day and performed well enough at both to warrant consideration at the #1 overall spot because the Texans HC (Bill O'Brien) has already stated that they will take a QB in this draft.

Team it up with his connections to the UCF program and the fact that Bortles has done everything he's been asked to do leading up to the draft and it should be clear that he should be the first QB taken. It isn't Bridgewater (see other discussions about where I think he should be taken) or Manziel. They are already out of the discussion. The only question for the Texans is whether they should take a player at another position or not. If they take a QB at #1, it will be Bortles.
