I just did a mock draft with fans of other teams.
Draft went:
1. Clowney 2. Mack 3, Bridgewater
and I took Robinson. As much as I really like Johnny Football, I couldn't pull the trigger.
I kept hearing "We're going to be the toughest team on the field" when I was thinking about my pick and Watkins/Manziel don't add up to that point.

I like Robinson a lot.
I'm just not sure we're going to be taking a top 5 offensive lineman, espeically on a team that lacks playmakers.
Unless the top 3 is Bridgewater, Watkins, Manziel, I just don't see Robinson on our radar.

I agree I guess, but I wouldn't rule it out. I guess I'm just not as high on Watkins as everyone else.

I'd love him - definitely the most talented OT in a loaded class. I have him number 1 on my board (but I go back and forth between him, Watkins, Clowney and Bridgewater).
Only question to me is how Schwartz would do at RG -- can he make that transition?
If so, we get Robinson under a rookie contract for 5 years, then when his contract gets big, Joe Thomas will be retiring (or close to it). So we can slide Robinson over to LT.

I think the question then becomes does GR make a better RG than MS? If he does then you keep more talent on the OL by leaving MS at RT. I agree I would love this pick even at RG. He could slide over to either RT or LT in a yr. or 2 if need be. With the longer outlook being LT.

Alternatively we could slide down a few spots and target Matthews who I like a little better than Robinson.

I think if we like Matthews more we would just take him -- that being said I think Robinson has way more talent. Matthews is more technically sound, but I think a little stiff.

I have them really close. If both are available at #4 and we were to flip flop with Atlanta and drop down to #6 we would get one of the 2, which I would be fine with either. If that is the route we choose to go.

I hope that whoever took Mack traded up with whoever was picking for the Rams.

If we're not taking a QB at #4, then I want Robinson (or Matthews a close second)...

He's big. He's strong. He's mean. He gets a lot of pancakes. He is fairly athletic. He's really fast. He can be dominant.
On the other hand, he is relatively inexperienced and has some technique issues. He plays out of 2-point stance. Can he play out of a 3-pt. stance? He doesn't get real low when moving laterally and he would have to do that in a zone blocking scheme. He also holds quite a bit and he might get called for it more in the pros.
He has a lot of positives, but I don't think he is sure-fire pick.

Does a team like us, having a great talent at the position, stand to benefit enough from mentorship that we could see it as "safe"? Would a great technician of a LT benefit a raw but extremely gifted LT similar to how people assume a great DE(Watt) could benefit a raw DE)Clowney?
In case that wasn't clear consider this scenario. Free of opinion lets say the FO ranks Robinson and Watkins DEAD even. How important is Joe Thomas's influence vs need at the position? Does Joe being here offer a security to Robinson's development that outweighs the higher(if slight) need at WR. Personally I think at such a high pick hedging your bets as much as possible is necessary as long as you aren't completely ignoring needs(it's not like we are set with 5 OL).
I ask because it is my opinion a veteran embodiment of everything the prospect lacks would really solidify your confidence in the pick. I think it is more likely he progresses to his fullest potential and thus makes him the safest pick. WE don't have a QB, OLB, or WR who can offer what Joe can to Robinson. I think it's a factor that will be weighed by the FO and should be considered and discussed. It's scary to think about but if Robinson ever became as technically sound as Joe you may be looking at the best LT of all time.

If Robinson and Watkins are the choices, and they are "dead even" then you take Watkins because we need another WR more than we need another OT...

Either that, or if I can trade and move down a couple of spots and still have a reasonable chance of grabbing one of the 2 remaining QB in the original scenario, then I would do that.

Love Robinson, gonna be a good Pro
BUT
at # 4 we have other bigger glaring holes than Right Tackle,
at Sammy Watkins or a Kaliib ( LB Buffalo) would be a better fit for our needs, nothing wrong with Robinson, just matching our needs to whats out thier,
and I agree not pulling the trigger on Johnny pay check...I mean johnny foseball

OK, here is the only hole in the theory...
Joe Thomas contract was actually front loaded and benefits the Browns the longer he is employed as a healthy player. Never missed a game, I can't imagine that becoming an issue.
He is signed through the 2018 season, this year's draft class will become free agents in 2018...SO the Browns will train a RT, then could potentially lose BOTH of these guys in the same offseason IF they get him to sign a 5 year rookie ocntract...If he signs a more traditional 4 year deal, then they lose him to free agency the year before Joe Thomas last year of his contract.
The only way this route benefits the Browns is if Thomas becomes injury prone..Who is up for hoping that happens?

I think the best case scenario is us re-signing Greg Robinson and Joe Thomas retires at the end of that year or keep him for a year or two on a contract. Either of those are rather likely.

But then you will have two LT money contracts at a time when you don't know if Greg Robinson can even make the switch.
This just seems like a waste of resources for a player I personally have rated outside of the top 5 picks and we are picking #4.

Waste of resources and "outside the top 5 picks" are two completely separate things. Don't confuse them.
Of course if he's not in your top 5, then you don't take him at 4. The question is, for people who have him ranked in their top 4, do you pull the trigger if he's the BPA?

Of course it all comes down to Ray Farmer's list...
BUT, Haslem will influence him even if he tells Ray that he has complete control.
Haslem wants to win sooner than later and taking a RT at #4 doesn't help that cause. No player is a sure thing, but a RT has probably the least influence over winning now than just about any position in discussion at #4 I.E. QB, WR, LB, RT..Are there any other positions in discussion?
In terms of ratings of the prospects, you MUST compute in the significance in terms of influence over the teams outcome in games..In terms of influence, I would rank them;
1. QB 2. LB 3. WR 4. RT
So, if your top 4 is one at each of these positions and the difference in your rating (notice I say rating and not ranking) is minuscule, then influence should play a pretty large role in deciding between the four.
Personally, my rankings are 1. Bridgewater 2. Watkins 3. Manziel 4. Matthews 5. Clowney (and dropping)
So, If any of my top 3 are there I would definitely take one of them, if both Watkins and Manziel were there, I would probably go Manziel because of the influence factor.

After our disasterous off season, there is NO WAY we are taking a tackle at #4. Haslam (for better or for worse) does care what the fans/media think about him and the Browns. We will make a splash, just not the cannon ball Robinson would provide.
here's to you here's to me, browns fans we'll always be. but if by chance we should disagree, to heck with you and here's to me!

Orlando Pace? Wow. I think Pace had much better lateral movement and was a much better technician.
Bro, I don't want to knock Robinson. He is a good prospect. However, there is no way I would draft him if I were the Browns unless he fell to 26, and that ain't going to happen.
And I am not saying you are wrong and I am right. We just disagree. No big deal.

I would love it if we took watkins at #4. I would also love it if we traded down but from I've been reading everyone wants to trade down and no one wants to trade up.
I way that with the assumption the Browns don't like the options at QB.
I think its a great year to be at #4 because we should be getting a great player one way or another.

Not quite true, Banner came in during the Summer. So he lasted like a year and may be 6-7 months?

Jc... 1. He would be a good-great RT from the get go. 2. If our QB of choice is gone then I see it as the SAFEST pick for a new regime. 3. Vers...not sure but I think Joe T plays out of a 2 point stance, I don't see why Robinson wouldn't?
Do I think its something we would do on draft day? Nah not for a RT - jmho

Last year three teams took right tackles is the top 4. At least two of them have to regret it if not three.

Really? Johnson was great - Joekel was pretty good until he got hurt. Even Fisher was pretty solid by the end of the year (and is projected as starting LT next year).
Also, note that no player drafted in the top 10 really did much last year.

You're spot on Vers. Last years draft sucked.

Great? Johnson was the only one that wasn't terrible but he wasn't great. Actually he kind of started off the year terrible but wasn't terrible by the end.
The Jags traded away their LT for pittance so they basically gained nothing for the number two overall pick, who will now be coming off an ACL.
Fisher was so terrible he was benched. Chiefs fans on the board I go on sometimes hate that pick after loving it when it was made. Now they let Albert walk because Fisher has to play LT. They should have taken Lotulelei.
I'm positive that both the Jags and chiefs regret those picks, and would not be surprised if the Eagles do as well.
