so i'm watching bill maher right now, and theres a Republican congressman who was making some absolutely good points. such as: these 2 democrats want criminal charges brought against GM, bought what individual do you charge?
but the main part was about the inner city and latinos and blacks. one guy was arguing, which i agree, that republicans are complaining about latinos and blacks not working, yet theres no jobs TO get, which means no job no paying for education and such.
but the republican cogressman brought up an excellent point: we have a democrat president, and a democratic senate. yet, they have done absolutely nothing to help the situation as far as better schools, jobs, and such, mainly for the inner city.
and here's my problem with obama. the guy KNOWS the grind of being in inner city chicago. i'm not saying that a president is suppose to show special interest in one specific group, but you think if a president was from the inner city, and he knows first hand thats one of, if not THE biggest problem in america, is education for the poor, which once again is mostly inner city, he would do something about that to try and fix the problem of jobs, education, violence and such.
now to talk about the other part........
does race have an advantage in this country?

Eh, from what I see of Chicago (where I live, downtown, South Loop), half the problem are the inner city people themselves. More money is put into the public schools in Chicago than most school districts in Illinois. Yet they have the worst scores. They put more money per student in instructional costs and operational costs, yet they get poor results.
Why? The communities. So much starts at home. And that's something I realized being a teacher myself. I spent a year teaching in a good area, and I spent may be a years worth of substituting (making some money on the side) in a city school district. You take the students from the good area, put them into the city district, you'll see the same results they had before. It was never the schools. It's the homes and the communities.
We can pump as much money into education as we want, but we're not gonna have much success unless the money is put into things which make sense. And really, what needs to happen is stronger communities and self-accountability. For example, Elementary schoolers need routines. They thrive off it. So they need a bed time. There's no reason that when I go to the grocery store with my girlfriend on a schoolnight at 2130 that there'd be little kids running around. That's just wrong.
And really young kids, they need to be read to. That makes such a difference toward Reading Comprehension (which is the basis of learning most anything). But a lot of these kids aren't getting read to (possibly because mom doesn't feel comfortable reading). And reading to toddlers actually does make a difference when it comes to future reading comprehension.

Why people can't figure this out, or admit this, is beyond me. Parents need to care. Fix that, fix the schools.

Well it all stems to self-accountability. Nobody likes to blame themselves for their problems. People think that the world owes them something. I don't know where that idea came from, but that's what it seems to me. But that's what these inner-cities do. They don't focus on the major issue because it's dangerous talk. It's unpopular. You're beating down on the already beat down. Racist, attacking the poor, attacking poor single mothers, whatever you want to call it. But the fact is, you have kids who stand very little chance of success because of the world they're being brought up in.
My theory, with life, it's like you're dealt a poker hand. Nothing you can do about the hand you were dealt, or the hand that you currently have. You have to play the cards you have, and you've gotta play to win (unfortunately, children don't really know how to play life-poker, and their parent (as is generally the case with poor inner-city folk) doesn't either)

2 parent families are so important. The destruction of the 2 parent family has really disproportionately harmed the minority community. Over half of Black children are raised in a one parent family. That is astonishing. Half a century ago, marriage and family were very important in the Black community. Today, many don't care. 67% of Black children in single parent homes in 2012. Source
42% of Hispanic children live in a single parent home. White families have 25% of children living in a one parent home. That is really too high, but actually looks almost acceptable by comparison. Frankly, I think that 25% is way too high. 43% of children born to parents of 2 or more races live in one parent families.
Asian families are the most stable, with only 17% of Asian children living in one parent homes.
I believe that, in general, a child in a one parent family will face less discipline than a child in a 2 parent family. This is not universal, obviously, as some one parent families have an extended family that helps develop discipline, and other have a strong parent in charge, but I do believe that children in a one parent home have less structure and discipline than children in a 2 parent home.
Further, children in a one parent home are more likely to be poor than children in a 2 parent home.
I think that the decline of the 2 parent family, especially among the minority communities, is the root of the problem.
I hope that this trend of the family dissolving can be reversed, because I don't see how we fix other problems without first fixing the family part of the equation.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Very interesting statistics. But socio-economic status also might have something to do with these statistics, (almost like a cycle). Yet the Asian statistic might throw that cycle thing out of wack.
But I do agree, the family unit for many in these cities is simply broken. Although I do think that it's just part of the problem. There's more going on than that.
The fact is that many of these kids don't have positive male role models, period. Boys not seeing what a real man is, and girls not seeing what a real man is either. While relationships/marriages don't always work out, I do think it's important for fathers to remain very active in children's lives.

Nothing to do with race, everything to do with welfare making single parent homes financially viable.

Edit: I'm with Candyman and CHS on this topic. Much I'd like to say but I refuse to get involved. If anyone wants my two cents, PM me.

I agree that there is probably more to it than "just" broken families, but I do believe that broken families are a major part of the problem. There is a reason why 13% of White people live in poverty, while 35% of Black people, and 33% of Hispanics do. Source A one parent family is more likely to be transient, moving from rental property to rental property. A 2 parent family is more likely to be able to put down roots, and many actually buy homes in which to raise their children. In the 4th quarter of 2013, 73.4% of Non-Hispanic White households own their homes. 43.2% of Black households do. 45.5% of Hispanic households do. Home ownership data Census Why the disparity? Employment, obviously plays a huge part, but what influences employment? Education? If education influences employment, then what influences education? I think that having an intact family, with a mother and a father, is very important, and, in fact, I believe that it is the single most important factor. Obviously there are other factors, but I believe that this is the single most important one. 2 parent families can combine their efforts to raise their children, and they also bring the economics of scale into play. It is far less expensive to maintain one 2 parent household than it is to pay for a single parent household, as well as the household for the other parent.

Obama can’t play to special interests for race relations because it would make him look weak in the eyes of the public and make him look like racist. For his credibility, his party, and his other more important special interests (Wall Street & big business) he will ignore these issues and write a book later wishing he could have done more lol. I feel he is following the same path many presidents follow which is help big business which helped them get to office. There are many things wrong with the process including many laws that hurt the inner city, for example In Chicago, do you know why there are so many guns on street? It is very hard to prosecute straw purchasers (which are people who use their 2nd amendment right and purchase a gun),who in turn gives the gun to a criminal. A person can purchase multiple guns and report them lost and stolen and give them to criminals. The store owner is not going to contest because they are making quick and easy sales. I understand that the straw purchaser is a criminal and the criminal is a criminal but these laws are easily hurting the inner city because they are the ones using these guns which no one seems to care. Ironically Chicago homicides down fewest Murders Since 1965, so they are doing something right. linky I understand parents are to blame for inner city schools, and I agree to a point. There are many underlying small things that people don’t realize will have a huge impact on a kids life that is but for some reason it’s dismissed. I can't imagine being suspended at preschool at 4 years old. Black preschoolers more likely to face suspension For people who are scared to say their views, man up, everything I say, I am 1000% comfortable to have a round table talk about it. Me and swish don't agree on somethings lol, but I respect his opinion and respect that he is willing to put everything on the table.

It is an epidemic in general, and it is leading to absolute ruination in certain communities.
We need to start teaching men to be men again, judged by the way they handle their responsibilities, not by how many children they can father. Unfortunately, that seems to be a real source of pride for some men. I had one guy who worked for me, and he had 7 or 8 kids, and he was so proud. One day he had an argument with one of my other employees, (who was the mother of one of his kids) and he said something along the lines of "I take care of my kids", and she disagreed.
The guy worked 25-20 hours/week at about a dollar over minimum wage. He wasn't taking cae of his kids ...... but his idea of taking care of his kids was taking them stuff once in a while .... nt actually supporting them. We need to change that mindset. Unfortunately, among many poor people, we have eliminated the need for responsibility, because the government will jump in to take care of their kids. I really struggle with how to change that, because I don't want kids living on the streets and starving to death, but I also see that the system perpetuates poverty as a generational inheritance. There has to be a solution, but I don't see any solution taking hold until we hold irresponsible people responsible for their actions.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I'm only about an hour from that track and about and hour and a half from Hockenheim ring but haven't been able to make a race at either yet. You can take your own car around at a decent price too...
Here's another video of nurburgring that's pretty cool.. at night in the rain

I play GT6! When I was in high school my dad & I raced karts at Hasselback Speedway, once at Mid-Ohio and a few other road races.
On the topic of the thread, I agree that a two parent home is the major difference, especially in the early years. My parents divorced when I was 6 and I lived with my mother till I was almost 15, when I moved in with my dad.
My children are lightyears ahead of where I was at their ages academically and spiritually, because both of us are here.
When I committed my life to Christ (and let him keep it) I didn't know what it meant to be a Godly man (still learning of course) I read a lot of books by Dr. Edwin Louis Cole, Four Pillars of a Man's Heart by Stu Webber and Basic Training For a Few Good Men by Tim Kimmel.
Naturally I fall short of all of these, but as Dr. Cole says, 'Champions are not men who never fail, they're men who never quit.'
WE DON'T NEED A QB BEFORE WE GET A LINE THAT CAN PROTECT HIM my two cents...

does race have an advantage in this country?
Yes. Without a doubt.
For 300+ years, race has been a part of advantage/disadvantage in America. End of story, as far as 'surface facts' are concerned. One bunch of Human Beings used another bunch of Human Beings as farm machinery to advance their economic gain.... and there's no going back from that.
Was it "wrong?" In 'My World,' yes... but in the Real World, it's never really been about right or wrong... it's been about What Truly Is. Every country/community/social structure has a built-in 'slanted playing field.' Sometime, it's race. At other times, it's country of origin, civic caste or religion.
Face it- one of Mankind's most consistent impediments to modern progress has been his genetic predisposition towards tribalism. When all else fails, he seems to always default back to the question: "Who is most like me?"
It really, REALLY worked when we lived as nomadic Hunter/Gatherers, but since that time, it has also been the source of aggression, mistrust, and warfare since man banded himself together for survival. ("Us v. Them")
Which brings us to the 21st c. USA:
Libs/Conservs Dems/Repubs Socialists/Communists/Libertarians/Fascists/LGBT's/Greens/Others...
...each with their own voice. Each with their own mice, milquetoasts, believers, True Believers, political activists and anarchic radicals. And ALL OF THEM are now in our ears, thanks to the internet.
______________________
My views on Modern Race Relations comes from a freakishly unique perspective... because I don't have the benefit of 'tribalism' to bolster my personal wold view:
1. I'm almost 60 years old. I was a kid when Martin made his mark.
2. I'm bi-racial (1/2 AfAm / 1/2 EuroAm) ...born into an age which actually cared about such things.
3. I have no direct link to my birth parentage.
4. I am a child of a 'closed adoption,' -so I only know of the teachings of those who raised me.
5. My skin color is best described as "Paper bag tan."
6. I was raised by two parents who shared 'pan ethnicity' on both sides (America's 'dirty little secret')... and have both slavery and indentured (Free Man) immigrant servitude in their familial histories. 7. I was raised in a smallish town, where racial/ethnic/socioeconomic boundaries were harder to establish/enforce/maintain. My 'little kid years' were spent playing with both 'ghetto ratz' and the sons and daughters of our town's civic leaders (My home rested in the 'demilitarized zone' between both).
8. I was fortunate enough to be adopted into a family whose reunions look like a meeting of the United Nations. From the darkest of chocolate to the palest of vanilla, My Family has always been a microcosm of what America has always looked like. Because of the fight each of our forebears had to endure, NONE of us were allowed to use our appearance/background as an excuse for not becoming all that we might. Light, dark, in-between... we were never allowed to use America's inherent racist model as an excuse for personal failure or sucess.
9. My life's experience defines me as a Black Man in America. Lighter-skinned than many/darker-skinned than most, I dealt with many of the same instances of oppression that are recounted in the national posts. I have green/hazel eyes. I have 'fair' skin. (Gawd- I HATE that term). I also have tightly-curled, 'kinky' hair. The 'kink factor ' has defined me, in social terms.
I refuse to be defined by my physical attributes.
10. I was the spawn of countless generations of Ethnic Americans who weren't defined by the 'culturally-accepted' definitions of what 'Americans' should be... and was dragged into a family that actually lived Martin Luther King's ideal.
...which is why I'm breaking with my personal internet protocol... and speaking up on such an issue tonight.
============================
From Day One, I was told this: "Bobby- this is what you need to understand about The World: If you want to make a success of yourself, you must be twice as good as your competition, to be considered half as worthy."
I wasn't told this by My Folks as part of some socio-political movement. I was told This Truth by My Parents because they were dedicated to giving their children the necessary skills it takes to succeed in Today's World. We kids got 'The Word'.... and took it to heart. We've lived it as we needed to, to vault ourselves beyond what America might (realistically) see for us. As such, we've made ourselves into the kind of Americans that each of us should have always strived to become..
My proud (primarily) African American-based Family now boasts among its ledger:
Educators (Both prep AND college) Artists Engineers Lawyers Architects Accountants Civil Engineers High Court Judiciate NASA engineers Arts & Sciences Ministry
'Black Folk'... making a difference in American Life, with every day that We live.

The inherent advantage that one ethnic group has in a given society is a temporal one, at best.... especially in a country that espouses 'equality' as one of its founding principals.
"White People" held sway in this country because of the preponderance of 400+ years of European emigration. That perspective is going to prevail until Our Nation's demographic makes it irrelevant.
"People of Color" constitute the next wave of emigration, as this country's history evolves. It's the inevitable way of things, as the world's demographics progress, It is only when a preponderance of non-European Americans become the dominant influx, that 'race' will become irrelevant, when charting America's history.
"America" will look very different, but will still stand for the same things... because ideology embraces all races.
I predict that within 2-3 generations of American Citizenship, race will no longer be a sticking point in our nation's policies.
Why?
Because of this: when I was a kid, My Entire Family was stared at- as a freakish anomaly.
Nowadays, we look like The Typical American Dream Family.... and we started it 3 generations ago. Because People are People.
__________________
'Ethnic advantage' might last another generation or two, but in America, it's ultimately doomed to extinction...
... because Human Beings will always bond with others.
A time will come when Americans can no longer divide themselves into ethnic divisions... and will simply accept the fact that "where you came from" will be less important than "who you are."
It is at that point, that 'race in America' will cease to be an ongoing issue, as our country moves forward. Coincidentally, it's also the point when 'ethnic issues' stop being center in our national policy.
As a 'paper bag tan/unattached ethnic/racial 'cross-cultural hoodrat,' I can't think of a better future for Our Nation.

Amen Clem that pretty much sums the whole subject up for me. That's the way I was raised was to see people as people, the color of somebody's skin will always be of no importance. It's only the inside of a person that matters not the outside. That's how my parents were raised, that's how I was raised, and that's how I raised my children.

I think if you would revisit the data looking at economics rather than ethnicity, a different conclusion could be drawn.
Economics and Education are as important, than ethnicity. At least it should be.
Those who are disadvantaged to begin with have a longer path to get even with others.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!…. That did not age well.

is there some type of chart with the stats on that?

Those who are disadvantaged only need two things to succeed. The grace of god, and a willingness to work their ass off and to do what is needed to succeed.

I think this may be partially true, but it is also not entirely true. I am from a single parent home, BUT, and this is the main point of my post, BUT, I had friends and their families, and my aunts and uncles, and neighbors who all looked out for me, and treated me as their own family. While my mom worked 2 jobs morning til late night, I was on my own, but I had a community around me that cared for me, reprimanded me, demanded and earned respect from me.
So while single parent homes may contribute, I think it is more about a child complete surroundings and relationships. Even if it's 1 person outside the home who takes the time to show they care what happens. THAT can have a major impact on a child.
You read stories all the time of these kids coming into the NFL (This is a football board so it's a perfect example), and how many o them will talk about a coach or teacher who really cared for them, and held them responsible. One who showed them they can be something, if they put in the effort and the desire.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

There's also a congress and the senate is not entirely democrats. There are at least two parties and there have been record setting numbers of filibusters. Nobody in Washington is accomplishing anything. That's more of a partisanship "gone wild" effect than a failure of one party or racism.
I see there are conversations about whether or not schools and fathers should be held accountable for poverty. If I were looking for a simple answer, to avoid thinking or researching causes, then schools and fathers would be the best choice, however when taking even the smallest look past the simplest answer it's evident that poverty and decreasing middle class has more to do with the loss of capitalism for the goal of individual profit.
And, as someone suggested if the same conditions were present with the exception of the races being reversed it would be the same. Could white people claim racism then? Absolutely. And as a white person I would be a pain in the butt trying to make other races realize how the difference in conditions make it more difficult for me to succeed.

link Swish this has a lot of different graphs regarding poverty and education. Quote:
Poor people apparently have lower college completion rates, which confirms prior intuition: poor families may not be able to pay the cost of education, or other burdens of poverty such as bad health may make it difficult to complete college.
It’s a vicious circle: poverty makes it harder to get an education, and lack of a good education makes it more likely that you are poor. Unsurprisingly, average income is substantially different for people of different education levels, with high average incomes practically a prerogative for the better educated:

thanks lurker. Rocket also PM me a chart as well.
man! the biggest problem i have with this country is the effect this all has on poor children.
theres resources for poor children to use, the problem is they are just that: children. teens. they need guidance, a sense of direction. if they don't know how to obtain or find these resources for education, then they just become another statistic.
those graphs man....not a good way to start my monday off. i wish both parties would get off their butts and do something about this.
and i wish fathers would own up and at least mentor their kids.

See, your idea of an answer is government.
My idea for an answer is parents and communities. I like how you said fathers. But pumping more money at these problems isn't really a solution.
As someone said, it isn't just the fact that they aren't from two parents homes. It's that the whole community sucks, period.
One of my best buddies (more like a brother, as we've fought and argued like brothers, and we've enjoyed each other's company like brothers) had a very difficult upbringing. And if it wasn't for my parents, he wouldn't be where he is today.
Point being, his male role models were drug dealers. His mom was a prostitute who got AIDS. His Aunt, whom he lived with after that, didn't have any male role models in the home. Male role models in the projects? Pretty much unheard of. The guys with money are guys selling drugs. Most of the guys hanging out in his neighborhood have been to jail. His older cousin, he's in middle school helping him with his math homework to get the guy his GRE (guy ended up being a crystal meth addict).
This isn't a problem of government. Nor is it an issue for money. The class sizes these kids are in within their schools, not usually the issue. The issue is the homes and communities. The bad influences on their lives. And communities need to take ownership of that.
And that's bigger than anything the government can do

I also came from a one parent home, the result of a divorce, and my father deciding that he did not want to be a father anymore.
Luckily my grandfather, great uncle, and 2 of my uncles were around on a regular basis, and provided strong role models for me and also for my brothers.
All of the men I mentioned were married for life. They worked hard, but always had time for family. They were tremendous role models of what a man should be. I owe them a debt I could never hope to completely repay.
