This story was published on Friday the 28th. I was surprised it wasn't posted here earlier.

If the Texans truly are trying to trade out of the #1 pick that tells us how they feel about the QB class. If you think their is a franchise QB available you never trade your pick.

I am not sure who Buffalo would be interested in; Sammy Watkins would be my best guess.

Quote:

It was only a matter of time, really. The Texans hold the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and according to a report, the team is interested in trading down.

"Word from the NFL meetings is the Texans are trying hard to deal the first pick in the draft," writes Dan Pompei of Bleacher Report. "They want to move down and acquire extra selections. Sources say they might have a trade partner in the Bills, who appear interested in moving up. It is unclear who the Bills would want in a trade-up scenario. Some believe they would move up for a quarterback. They also could make good use of an offensive tackle such as Greg Robinson. And it would be something to see them pair Mario Williams with either Jadeveon Clowney or Khalil Mack."

Invariably, we hear every spring that the team holding the top pick would like to trade down, but the last time it happened was in 2001, when the Falcons swapped places with the Chargers, moving up from fifth to first, and took quarterback Michael Vick. San Diego drafted LaDainian Tomlinson.

Still, if the Texans don't fall in love with the Big Three -- quarterbacks Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel or Teddy Bridgewater -- and they don't think defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is worth the top selection, it would make sense to move down, stockpile picks, and rebuild a roster that managed just two wins last season.

Still, back in January, long before the team traded quarterback Matt Schaub to Oakland, Texans owner Bob McNair hinted that moving down the draft board was a distinct possibility.

"Maybe we'll trade down and still get a quarterback that can do the job and get an outstanding defensive player," McNair said. "It's an exciting time. Everything's a moving target. Lot of different pieces."

Of course, that could have been part of the organizaton's elaborate plan to obfuscate the truth.

Earlier this week, new coach Bill O'Brien conceded that a quarterback is in the team's draft plans, but when exactly they'll take one remains undecided.

"I don't think there's any question that we'll draft a quarterback in the draft," he said. "Where we draft that quarterback, I don't think we know that yet. We're still in the process of studying all of these prospects, and in the process of putting a grade on them and place them where they would be in the draft. And I think that the big thing is it's such a long process."

O'Brien went on to point out that there are capable passers beyond Bortles, Manziel and Bridgewater.

"But there are other guys out there. You've got [AJ] McCarron. You've got [Zach] Mettenberger. You've got Logan Thomas. You've got [Tom] Savage. You've got [Jimmy] Garoppolo. I mean, I can go right down the list. To me, you've got 10 to 12 guys you've got to do a great job of evaluating and make the best pick possible wherever you pick these guys. So I just see a lot of good quarterbacks. All of the guys have potential, which is a dangerous word, and you're trying to make sure you're doing what's best for your organization -- what fits best for your organization when you make that pick of a quarterback."

Obviously, this means the Texans will draft Derek Carr, who was conspicuously absent from O'Brien's list above.

The same message we're hearing from our FO.... strong hints that with the depth at QB in this draft, folks aren't feeling the pressure to pick one early. They seem to feel they can get a guy that can do the job later on in the draft, which makes these top picks valuable currency for moving down.

If they want to trade down bad enough, I wonder if they settle for a little less?

I think most everyone will be willing to trade down in this draft given how deep it is. This is the year to have lots of picks. Because of that, I'm actually expecting fewer trades than usual. Hard to trade down if there isn't anyone that actually wants to trade up.

Our strategy I think should be to let the draft come to us and take BPA at #4. Let's not get cute and try to move up.

If I am buffalo I am looking to get one of these two QB's. I don't care that they drafted Manuel, he is not the answer. Sam with St. Louis, Sam Bradford is not the answer.

Hopefully they don't see it like I do, because I do not agree about Depth at QB in this draft, after the top 3, there is a dramatic drop off. 4th is probably Carr but then who? Jimmy Garrapollo? Aaron Murray? The 24 year old David Fales?

No thanks, if I am any team with a questionable QB like EJ Manuel or Sam Bradford I am trying to get one of these three.

Maybe they just aren't impressed with those that are thought to be high first round picks and perhaps they have their sites set on someone lower down?

I heard a talking head say yesterday that they have comparable grades on 4 or 5 top players and would be happy to move down, say to our spot and take one of those guys. Take that for what it's worth.

I've been saying since February I would give them our second 1st round pick if needed. That is a bargain compared to what The Redskins (and we were about to) paid for RG knee.

Although admittedly I'd rather trade with the Rams so whatever player they pick stays in the NFC.

No way in Pittsburgh would I take any of these QBs at pick 4 much less trading UP to get one.

If it's an RGIII type of deal, probably not. Something reasonable, sure. As for what the Browns may do, I don't get the feeling they are in a trade up mode. Just a feeling however. I could be dead wrong. The signals they are sending are all over the map..

Been saying same thing, more than happy to exchange both our first round picks which is a very lucrative offer giving they stay in the top 5 which still gives them more options to deal and etc - and acquire another first rounder...

Uh why? Sam Bradford was far more heralded coming out of college than the three current QBs, and he hasn't really panned out (yet). If a team that desperately needs a QB is willing to bail on the #1 pick, why should the Rams trade up to get a guy to replace Bradford with a guy who will likely be a bigger question mark?

The Rams are picking #2 so, they don't need to move up. Look I like Sam Bradford, but he just cannot stay on the field. If I viewed any one of these guys as an upgrade, I'd take it. In a dome, Bridgewater, Manziel and Bortles are all in play. They play in Arizon, San Fran and Seattle so weather isn't an issue like it is here. All three QB's are viable options and this is either Bradford last year on his contract or it's next season. All of his guaranteed money is already paid out.

It's a tough call, but I don't see him as the answer in St. Louis and I'd be looking to get my guy sooner than later.

i can see your argument for sam bradford. that dude has been a bust. imo, no playoff appearances, can't stay on the field. i mean there's other factors that result in that, but beside his first year, i don't remember them actually having a shot to get to the playoffs.

but EJ manuel? he was doing good until he injured his knee against us thursday night. i think a QB is dead last on their needs.

The Bills plugged Manuel into a team where he didn;t have to do it all ..... and he didn't.

They were 2nd in rushing, with 2307 yards rushing, and 12 rushing TD.They were 6th in the NFL in rushing 1st downs. They were able to use Manuel very carefully, and in limited doses.

We'll see if he can handle more than that in the future.

Any QB is going to be aided with such a threat that Buffalo had in terms of being able to run the ball... Spiller and Jackson would put a smile on any QB handing off to them and it opens up playaction and keeps a defense balanced/in check.

Just say No. This draft is to loaded with players to be throwing away picks on any of these questionable QB's. What I been hearing is there is no sure fired QB in this draft, so why would any team wasted a high pick on so many question marks?

The way is sounds, Houston is not willing to take a chance on these guys. I would just let the draft come to #4 and move on. We take BPA.

At this point, no. All three (or four, depending on who you ask) of the best QBs have a good chance of being available when we pick. The last thing we need is to give up picks when we don't need to.

I think that Bridgewater will fall out of the first round, like Geno Smith did last year. The Jets have already seen enough from Geno Smith (as a 2nd round pick) to sign Michael Vick to be their starter.

Personally, I wouldn't take Bridgewater before the 5th round, but what do I know. Bridgewater will make whatever team that selects him rue the day that they did. If it's in the first round (à la Brandon Weeden), it'll only make the decision more rueful.

Of course, we'll see how things turn out in about 5 weeks and then wait another 7 months or so to see how things go from there. Although, it may not take an additional 7 months for the reality of the blunder to be known.

I say we keep our #4 pick.. and if we want to trade up use the #26 and next years first to get ur "other" guy...

We're the Browns... chances are we'll be picking high anyway. So there is good value there.

Maybe, but that is precisely why I wouldn't be making any trades except to trade back.

The Browns should take the best player they can at #4 or trade back. In no circumstance should they (and I don't think that they will) move up. I don't think they would even trade up from #26 to get a player. They'll keep the selections they have (and look to acquire more). They may even want to ensure that they get some additional picks in future years in any deals they make. Not necessarily because they don't want the picks this year, but because selections a year out usually bump up a round. The adage 'a bird in hand is worth two in the bush', but if that bush is a nest.

I agree. I don't think we have to move up. I would take Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortels at #4. I don't think they all get picked in the first 3 picks. It also sounds like we like Carr. If those first 3 QBs get picked 1-2-3, we are then the lucky team who gets to deal down because somebody is going to want to jump someone for either Clowney or Mack....and we won't have to drop down very far. I'd bet we wouldn't have to drop more than 4-5 slots to pick up a 2nd rounder...maybe a little more since several teams will be calling.

Let the draft come to us.

I am not saying I want Carr...nor saying I don't....but I think the Browns do. I keep thinking about Farmer saying he knows who he wants and it isn't the most obvious name. I think we are trading down and are going to take Carr later in the 1st round.

I agree about letting the draft come to us. But If we think Carr (or any available QB) is THE GUY, we have to take him at #4. Ignore Mel Kiper and the draft gurus' projections. If our Front Office thinks he's the cream of the crop, chances are another GM sees the same thing.

If we don't see a Franchise Guy, or we're just going to take a mid-round stab (McCarron, Mettenberger) I say we try to trade #26 for 2015. You get great value trading out for future picks (like Banner did, or Jerry Jones w/Quinn). If we don't get The MAN this year, we'll need the ammo in 2015. And there's always the chance the trader stumbles and you get a top 10.

I agree with you there. If they feel that a particular QB is the best of the bunch, then we should grab him with our 1st pick. There is no sense taking chances with the most important position. If they feel that one guy is their guy, then take him and eliminate all worry.

+1 We have too many other needs to trade up. There is no one in the draft that has that value anyway. I wouldn't trade down for Bridgewater...even before he choked on Pro Day. Interesting the word is the Browns FO didn't invest time in Pro Days for the top QB because "every prospect is packaged to look good in their Pro Day". Guess Teddy didn't get that memo. He showed up to Amateur Day. Given all the wobblers he threw it looked like Duck Dynasty Day.

I agree, partially. I, too, think the Browns are taking a long look at Carr. I could easily see them taking him at 26. I don't think they'll trade down from 4. Depending on who has been taken in the first 3 picks I could easily see them taking Watkins there.

It's gonna be a long 5 weeks.....

I could see us doing as you project.....there are no right or wrong answers here if they are realistic.

We just don't know. And neither does Farmer. He has to wait to see who is selected in front of us and who is calling us on the phone once the picks are in.....if no one is calling, we take who we have to take, If they are and the guy we want is there, we aren't answering.

All we can do....the Browns that is.....is to look at all the possible scenarios and have a idea on what we will do when we hit the clock.

it depends on how we do it. if someone offers us a boatload including an extra 1st next year and then we use those picks to trade up some of our lower ones to get even more top50 picks in a loaded class and still get one of our top targets in the top10, then wouldn't we be idiots to not trade down?

it all depends on the QB though. if our QB is there and we think he's the guy, then we need to just take him.
