And I can see why you have that opinion. You've laid out your reasoning quite well.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

You're wrong. I don't condemn hunting or sailing families or families that live out in the sticks or in a flood zone for those things alone.. but I have every right to my opinion and you have every right to yours on the decisions they make... How much of those opinions should be law is a subject for a different thread...
But I do see why you are yet to answer my question about whether you think allowing a kid to stand in the front seat of a car on the highway is stupid...
If you say it's not stupid, then you look like a fool.. if you say it is stupid then you are condemning and judging everybody that has ever done it and some that continue to do it because you disagree with the way they choose to live their lives...... but deep down in your heart, you know it's stupid because you aren't stupid.

Sorry DC, I missed that question, wasn't ignoring it.
Yes it's stupid to let a kid stand in the front seat of a car. It's stupid not put a kid in a car seat, or strapped in a seatbelt. It's stupid not to put a life vest on everyone while boating, or not being prepared for and accident or an emergency on a long sailing voyage. Yes these are all stupid things to do. None of which this family is guilty of.
Opinions aside. They broke no laws. They had an emergency. They handled it with the correct maritime protocol. They were rescued with no loss of life. They lost their home. They will probably not go back to sea for a few years paying for the rescue and getting into a new home (sailboat) and the kids will be older.

The question wasn't really about this family, it was about establishing the fact that it's ok to think that the way some people choose to live their lives, and the decisions they make, are stupid. Something you said I had no right to do.

I feel bad for the family, I'm genuinely happy that everybody is ok. I never like to see somebody get hurt or killed or lose their home just so I can say "I told you so."

Not really responding to anyone in general...
I saw the phrase "they were only 900 miles from safe port," and I drive for my job. I drive a lot. "Only" 900 miles is the distance between Cleveland, Ohio and Bangor, Maine. Think about that and the distance needed to cover that, regardless of where you are, road or open ocean and that distance can NEVER be described as "only". The fact that they were that far away from help, coupled with a sick child and a malfunctioning boat makes the fact that they got help pretty close to miraculous.
I don't really have any sympathy for them losing thier home, because if the family is as smart as some here paint them to be, they had insurance and will get a shiny new home soon. In all honesty, it is my opinion (not fact, OPINION) that Petey and DC share the same view that the majority of folks would have if they were made aware of the circumstances surrounding this story. It's hard to feel sorry for anyone that willingly places themselves in a dangerous situation. And regardless of how much of an expert this family unit was sailing, traversing the open ocean is a dangerous proposition. Surely if the father of this family (I mean, he's an EXPERT!) came to any one of us and offered to take your 1 year old child with them, you'd let him take them, right? Somehow, I don't think the majority will respond with a yes. Regardless of how well prepared you are there are things that can go wrong, and adding variables that increase the likelihood of something going wrong isn't too wise.
Disclaimer: if this family makes a public mea culpa admitting this was an ill-adivsed trip, if they can admit they placed themselves in that danger, I'll possibly back off on my vitriol.

You are commenting on something you will never understand. It's a waste of time to try and explain it here.
900 miles is about 2-3 days. I think they were at sea for 2 or 3 weeks. You do the math.

2-3 days? How do you come up with that number?
I work on a vessel. We ride 24 hours a day, average maybe 12 knots (all depends on if we're with the gulf stream or against). I have never been overtaken by a sailboat, I overtake sailboats all the time. It takes us 4.5 days to go 1300 miles.
Let's say 6 knots over ground, and that's pushing it (look at that vessel, it looks like a Pacific Seacraft or a Valiant. That kind of cruising sailing vessel with a canoe stern, full keel, heavy boat). They're going up, down, up, down in the Pacific swells. 6*24. That's 144 miles a day. 900/144. That's at least six....... Under power or not.

You clearly know more about this than I ever will.. I will just state that from the article it says they were from San Diego, they were 900 miles off the Mexican coast, and they were 2 weeks into their journey..
Isn't it very possible that the first leg of their journey was from San Diego south to some point in Mexico where they spent some time and then departed across the Pacific? It doesn't specifically say that they had left port 2 weeks ago for the South Pacific, just that they were 2 weeks into their journey,, which could have included multiple stops along the coast.
that being said, it also says that the Navy vessel was cruising at 25 knots.. so by math, if 1 knot = 1.15 mph, that means running 24 hours a day, it would take the Navy vessel over 31 hours to reach them at 900 miles out...

I'm sorry, O, Captain, My captain!
I'll be sure to hoist my main sail and make sure the tradewinds carry me away from that which I am inexperienced in.
Glad to know you just jump to conclusions, seeing as how you know absolutely nothing about me or my background. And likewise I know nothing about you, thus why I didn't say your OPINIONS were unqualified because you were talking out of school.
