You’ve probably heard the phrase Play like a Brown from Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine.

And let me notify you up front: it’s not some bogus, coach-speak, cliché motto plastered on the walls in Berea. It’s a well thought out master plan I had the liberty of exploring with Pettine during a sit-down conversation in his office.

The first part of Play Like a Brown has virtually nothing to with football. It’s a shift in mentality.

“People from the outside want to characterize us as the same old Browns, and let them do so,” said Pettine. “I tell our team, ‘We are breaking off the rearview mirror.’ Acknowledge the history is there, but that’s not us.”

Pettine knows that altering the players’ mindset is little more than cheap talk if he doesn’t act on it. So he plans on running some of the most competitive practices in the NFL. The Browns will operate the two-minute drill, third-and-short, and other do-or-die situations the very moment the team is able to strap on their helmets.

“We want our guys with two minutes left in the game to say, ‘This is our wheelhouse,’” said Pettine. “The other team hung a curveball and we’re hitting it out of the park.”

The real change in mentality, you ask? There will be documented winners and losers in these practice competitions. The victors will find themselves eating lunch first or picking the weight room music. Losers will be relegated to push-ups and other chores that are still being finalized by the coaching staff. While not overdoing the prideful contests, the goal, Pettine says, is to breed a culture of winning.

“We want to get guys that hate to lose so much that it almost makes them borderline physically ill,” Pettine said, half-seriously.

Part two of Play Like a Brown, still is not about how much weight a player can lift, or how fast he can run the 40-yard dash. It’s about showing relentless mental toughness on a day-in and day-out approach.
The new head coach in Cleveland recognizes that there is noticeable excitement inside the walls of the franchise. But it’s April. Every NFL team has a clean slate.

Pettine experienced a similar refrain to “same-old-Browns” from New York media pundits, who talked about the “same old Jets” when he was hired as Rex Ryan’s defensive coordinator in 2009. But he and Ryan advanced to back-to-back AFC title games by becoming unrelenting.

The Jets developed into attackers who prided themselves on burying opponents with the most miniscule details. A tipped pass by a defensive lineman, a bone-crushing block on special teams, a linebacker sniffing out a trick play at the line of scrimmage: Preparing and executing for these situations will encompass what Play Like a Brown is all about.

“Football is a game of a million little things,” said Pettine. “The teams that can master as many of those as possible are the ones that are going to be successful.

“I think that’s what happens in programs that haven’t had success is that they start hoping other people will make plays. The defense starts hoping the offense will score late in the game, because they don’t [want the pressure] of being on the field. The best teams are more assertive and confident.”

The final phase of Play Like a Brown is the hardest part: figuring out who wants to actually play like a Brown.

“I told our players, ‘There are guys in this room that are good enough to play in the NFL. They just might not be a fit for us,’” Pettine said. “That to me is critical. You have guys that are talented enough but just don’t fit the way our program is going.”

General Manager Ray Farmer helped address the situation to a ‘T,’ and according to Pettine the organization, “is thrilled with our batting average in free agency.”

Bringing in Karlos Dansby, Donte Whitner and Nate Burleson isn’t solely because they all have distinguished NFL careers. It’s also because of their leadership and ability to reinforce the Play Like a Brown message.

Play like a brown what?

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Sounds a lot like Mangini. I liked Mangini, but many of you didn't. Wonder how this will go over???

I did the same thing. I believe competition is a great motivator.

Our coaching staffs used to have conversations about which type of player do you want: The one who wants to win more than anything or the guy who can't stand to lose. Most of us agreed it's the guy who can't stand to lose. That might be hard for some to understand, but those are the guys who can persevere when things get tough. Our team showed they didn't have that trait last year, as they folded late in many games and folded late in the year.

Another good point. Consistent effort beats flash in the pan athleticsm. That is why I didn't want a guy like DeSean Jackson even though so many of you did. That's why I never liked guys like Leon, Big Baby, and Phil Taylor. I prefer guys like Joe Thomas, Josh Cribbs, Alex Mack, Bryant, and Reubin.

The only thing I will add is that we have heard much of this before. I will bet that most will be accepting of it since it isn't Banner saying it. LOL

I think Pettine is a bit more intimidating than those other guys. When a few guys get booted the eyebrows may raise and ears perk up.

Sure we've heard it all before but I think we have a coach, staff and GM that will walk the talk and deliver.

magini has been my favorite coach of recent years. thats not really saying a ton, i know-- but i liked his approach.

i think he screwed himself with kokonis or what ever his name was. If eh had heckert drafting for him, and some time to implement his system, i think he would have taken us to the playoffs for sure.

i think these tough coaches are hit or miss though. If he is a son of a bitch for a HC, and we win (be it scheme or finally finding the right QB), i think the players accept that general for a head coach approach. conversely if we have an . of a head coach, and we still keep losing, the players react poorly to that style of coaching.

fingers crossed.

I like the rhetoric and mindset. There are no small victories. I do not care much for "moral victories"; warriors battle for the single purpose of victory.

We have been too casual about mental toughness and desire. Winning is its own reward. I liked Mangini's ethic, but not his game execution. But we did turn some corners under him.

The idea that "We practiced well, really well" always stuck in my craw, especially after we stunk it up that Sunday afternoon. I think the bar has moved up already. It lacks some wins to validate it. But we are going to chase it harder this year. I believe.

If he wins, it'll go over great.

If he has the same 10-22 record as Mangini, then not so well.

Unlike Mangini - who I got to see run his team at Hofstra training camp...since moved. I still through the NY Media got to know Pettine a bit and he does have a lot of Mangini in him...what I mentally have assessed him to be. Is an evolved Mangini...discipline but considered a Players coach in other ways. His players to a man really love playing for him. But he has a lot of philosophies and character that Mangini had regarding football.

jmho...maybe not our first choice but we backed into this baby...our HC of destiny

The talent level of the two teams is not even comparable, so he had better win. Mangini was dealing with a roster full of guys out of the NFL, Alex Mack, Joe Thomas and Dquell Jackson.

And he was responsible for bringing poor talent in and letting better talent go. And he was responsible for making the team as old as Mickey Rooney....RIP.

Which is fair, his hiring of Kokonis was a colossal mistake.

Don't even get me started on "old", those old players were some of our best players back then. We've been "young" for three years now and equally as terrible with more "talent".

There is no doubt in my mind that Petine will have the Browns playing hard.

I am Parcells guy. I believe in the approach that mental and physical toughness comes from competition and fear of losing. Fear of the coach, fear of losing your job, fear of being embarrassed. Then the feeling of belonging replaces the fear because then you know what it takes. Then you become a team of belief in each other. And you know there is only one way to do things and that is all out.

I have stated elsewhere on posts that if the Browns get C+ to B- production out of the quarterback position we will have a winning season.

I like what has taken place so far and I see the light at the end of what has been a long dark tunnel.

One of the videos on the CB website had a big picture/poster in the cafeteria or something that said "Play like a Brown" and underneath it, it had all the traits and etc that Mike Pettine has made known on many occasions.

Hopefully the young players are buying into it.

On a side note, I really can't wait to watch and observe Mike's reactions while on the sidelines and etc. I'm hoping he is a high-energy guy that isn't afraid to get into a player's face and chew their ear holes out... that is exactly the type of coach I want, and that I 'think' we need. No more of these soft coaches and crap. Force personal accountability and responsibility and if you don't do your job, you're outta there.

Yep, I can't even read articles from coaches on how they are going to run the team and their motto's. I don't care, I'm sick of your crap rhetoric, just win. I'll judge your motto by how to team plays.

For all I care your motto could be "it doesn't matter, players either want it or they don't" as long as it worked.

Battered fan syndrome, also known as "Browns fan syndrome"

One thing I will say, is that I think Mike Pettine understands that. His intro presser was pretty straightforward and lacked any of the rah-rah stuff that we've been force-fed for what seems like ages...

It was very much to the point, and I believe in short, he said, "we need to win, and win early, or I'm gone". At least that was the feel I got from it. I can respect that, but it doesn't get me excited. That's not fair for him, but life isn't fair, especially when you are dealing with this football team.

I kinda think the same thing when people talk about Johnny, for or against him. All the extra stuff about him doesn't matter to me, the flash and the glam, the sprinting down the field like a mad man after a TD throw, etc... I just want a guy that can win, that's why I like him...

If we draft Blake Bortles or Teddy or whoever, and they're the epitome of boring, but they're winning football games? I don't think we'll be bothered by that... lol

It's sad, but it's very true that this fan base is pretty much asking for substance, or go away. Can you really blame us though? I think we're all tired of the coachspeak, and the talk of doing big things, and "progress", etc..

Mangini had good ideas, he just didn't have the personality to carry them out. He was an egomaniac who couldn't relate with normal humans. I'm hoping Pettine is more even keel.

I remember seeing Pettine a little bit on Hard Knocks. He seems a little less instense, and more friendly than Mangini. Which isn't saying much.

I agree in part ...... but .....

I know from experience that turning a failed business into a successful one takes a change in mindset and culture. It takes getting people to buy into the program. It takes people believing that change is possible.

I do think that this stuff is often overused. However, it is vital that it truly happen. It does take more than lip service though. It takes real change.

Oh, how I long for the staunch veteran leadership and skills of Eric Barton, David Bowens, Mike Furrey, CJ Mosely, David Patten, Hank Poteat, John St. Clair, Floyd Womack, Brett "the next Brady" Ratliff, Kenyon Coleman, and Abe Elam.

Man, those were the days!

Abe was horrible an overrated. Mike Adams was serviceable but a better option than Usama Young when he replaced Adams, IMO.
