Paul Brown coached high school football. He started at some school...I think it was Severn and then was the head coach at Massillon. They were called the Tigers. There are similarities between Massillon and the Bengals.

You were right about Lombardi and Walsh.

John Wooden coached high school. So did Woody Hayes. I believe Lute Olson, Red Aurbach, Roy Williams, and Lute Olson all started off as high school coaches.

I've been staying away from this thread since I used to coach high school. People are being rather insulting towards high school coaches.

I have always believed that high school coaches are the best teachers. They really know the finer points of the game. College coaches expertise is in recruiting. Pro coaches are more of managers.

One more thing..........we don't even know what was in the 40 page document. It might not have had one play in it. I don't see why it is being viewed in such a negative light.

For once we agree. Not all HS Coaches are as good as Mike Sr was. But still, you can't outright dismiss a coach because he never coached beyond HS. That's just stupid.

Note: a rare few but most in Long Island NY resemble those insulting remarks. I know its not that way elsewhere especially in places like Northern Ohio and sections of PA. Lombardi did a Catholic school??? in New Jersey about 10 miles from the NY border and 10 miles from NYC - dated a girl from college who went to that school - how I know...lol

Long Island HS coaches are the dumbest around. True story. HC been coaching 25+ years and still coaching there. Was the DC as well. We are ahead in the rain 4th qtr by 3 scores. He huddles them up and they come out in Cover O man...I'm like huh, no safeties??? Most the parents turn their head to me with WTF face on like I'm going to get it changed lol DB slipped TD. 3 n out They come out in the same formation...needless to say we lost the game. My son who was the Junior back up QB - I asked him what was he doing why Cover 0, He rolled his eyes at me and said, Dad he thinks that is Cover 4 and he read that is the ultimate prevent D - they had 4 WRs and yeah he had 4 guys covering So I went and made a chart for the coach Cover 1 man Cover 2, etc. Vers over the years taught me Cover 3 Zone which I got mixed up with Cover 3 man which I knew about. End of story my son said "dad I can't do that I got to play next year - I can't show him up" Total idiots! I don't think Pettines Dad fell in his class or any of those good Ohio HS out there! We got 8 million within 100 miles - and we put out like 5 major scholarships to big teams a year

Only an arrogant know-it-all like the one who suggested that would do something like that. It is funny that a message board poster who acts as if he knows more than anybody about anything, much less coaching football successfully, would in a round about way make fun of a coach with decades of success.

1) Do I know you?

2) How am I making fun of Pettine Sr. in a 'round about way'?

Is that an assumption that he was talking about you? He didn't reply to you directly and there were others who were a bit critical of the letter.

Yes, it was an assumption, based on the poster's reference to tossing the playbook in a desk drawer, which is the wording that I initially used.

I don't see what do scorn or pettiness has to do with anything.

Maybe scorn or pettiness are not the right word.. perhaps the right word is arrogance... arrogance that there isn't possibly anything he could learn from an old retired HS football coach.

Go ahead and switch out words...I still don't understand what it has to do with anything.

The whole notion of Shanahan being arrogant or petty or feeling he can't learn from a HS coach is an invention of Damanshot's assumptions.

Can we please put an end this petty back n forth regarding what was meant by saying "put in the drawer" and "the gleam" that has been going on for what feels like a few pages and essentially ruined this thread topic. This is getting as bad as any stupid argument between Versatile Dog and (Insert Name Here) that we all have to suffer through more than regularly.

Thanks in advance.

The problem with HS coaches is that they don't have much talent to work with. So they have to run very basic, but traditional schemes such as the triple option or a pro-offense that focuses mainly on the run. That's the problem, they just don't have the talent to run an air coryell, an air raid, or a wco. So they end up getting a bad rap because of it. But then again, we saw an ex-HS football coach just play in a National Championship using a modernized triple option (Though Malzahan is an exception and is not anything close to the norm).

Over the duration of this thread, if you weren't building straw men and attacking points no one was making, you were posting definitions of words and then repeatedly misunderstanding their meaning.

What in the last three pages indicate that your point is valid? Your point isn't even rooted in reality. You're fighting windmills.

And now you're yelling in all caps.

Screamed the guy with three and a half times more post than a poster with ten thousand posts.

Seriously. Thirty four thousand posts. 34k?!

I'm sure you've never said nothing in those.

I remember writing that but I don't remember what it was I was planning on DVRing. And I'm not sure whats wrong with saying I'll DVR something and watch it later!

Refresh my memory if it's not too much trouble..

As for 34k posts,, is there a post limit that I've violated?

Looks to me that the only thing you guys can pick on is the number of posts. When I ask a question, it's apparently not something you all want to answer. I guess it's ok to make dumb comments like "You misunderstood" instead of answering the question.

I just love internet tough guys..

Oh, by the way, I still think it's dumb as can be to NOT take information from a respected coach. And Mike Sr. is just that.

Personally, I think that you should slow down, because you just post too damn much.

It's wearing me out trying to stay ahead of you.

You asked what you misunderstood. Why would you be upset when someone addressed it, and where is anyone dodging your point?

If you need a more detailed summation....

Things You Don't Seem To Understand

- the definition of 'assumption'

- why it would be considered awkward and unprofessional to ask (i.e. force) your newly hired subordinate to review information drawn up by your father

- why it would be better if Pettine looked them over himself, and relayed any pertinent information to his staff

- that this has nothing to do with Shanahan's ego or Pettine Sr.'s prowess

- that yelling in all caps makes you look foolish.

- whatever the hell 'The Gleam' is

As you can see, I'm not alone thinking your full of it on the Mike Sr. Thing.. Seems like quite a few think it's not only NOT awkward, but it's also not a bad idea for Shanahan to look at those pages of stuff.

But you feel it's awkward, I think you are incorrect. so be it.

As for the other stuff, my guess is next, you'll do what another poster did and insult the picture of my dog..

Still didn't get an answer about the Gleam thing.., don't suspect I will.

I do understand the meaning of assumption.

Meaningless posts.. I've had a few when I look back. Not sure the one you brought up was meaningless, but I guess you won't help by telling me what it was about.. I don't suppose you remember either.

Whatever, this has gone on long enough...

I think you are wrong.. end of it for me. Feel free to have the last word.. it's all yours

And a lot of people agree with me.

Either way, are you really resorting to 'majority opinion = valid opinion' at this point? In regards to a fluff piece, no less?

That's because I never brought it up and don't know what it is. That's another thing you seem to have misunderstood, as I've already stated this before.

Quote:

I do understand the meaning of assumption.

...said the man who asked "You said you highly doubt he sees it.. Isn't that an assumption?"

I honestly couldn't tell you. I just went to your posts page and pulled one at random. It didn't take a lot of digging. Most of your posts are either stating that the sky is blue, or asking for a link to confirm that the sky is blue.

To be honest, I don't see many agreeing with you.. including myself.

You have referred to whatever the content of the document as a "playbook".. which to me is an assumption on your part, because I have not seen that stated anywhere.

If you would take a moment to consider the source, a well seasoned and extremely respected HS coach, other that just the head coach's father, I think you could attest to the idea that whatever the content of the notes were... they were probably quite professional and personable...

I would actually bet that Shanahan was quite flattered.... JMHO
