At February's combine, Jaguars general manager David Caldwell called the potential return of wide receiver Justin Blackmon "a luxury" for Jacksonville if it happened.

The odds don't sound promising.

"It's not something we're counting on," Caldwell told reporters Friday, per Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union, adding that he'd be "relatively surprised" if Blackmon suited up in 2014 after being suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Offseason Dates
The NFL offseason workout program calendar has been released for all 32 teams. Find out your favorite team's schedule. More...
Caldwell said in February that the Jaguars haven't been in regular contact with Blackmon, the fifth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, citing "certain rules that we have to abide by" from the NFL Players Association and the league office. The third-year wideout would need to be reinstated by the league first, something NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport on Friday called no guarantee, per sources informed of the situation.

It's a bitter pill to swallow for a promising young Jaguars team with Cecil Shorts and Ace Sanders penciled in at the position alongside Mike Brown. Last season, Blackmon lit up the field with his post-catch playmaking ability and an outrageous 19 catches for 326 yards in his first two games back from suspension.

The Jaguars can release him without owing another cent, so there's no harm in keeping his rights heading into the season. From another angle, an especially daring club could, in theory, attempt to secure Blackmon in a trade. That would be surprising, but the current regime didn't cause this headache -- they inherited it.

If I recall correctly the two prospects getting the most attention from Brown's fans prior to the 2012 draft were Blackmon and Richardson. Both have turned out to be disappointments for different reasons. All said and done at least the Browns were able to turn TRich in to a first round selection.

I agree. They need DE and QB as well, even moreso than WR. While Watkins is definitely an option, this in no way confirms anything.

I had a huge man crush on Justin Blackmon. Guy impressed the hell out of me at Okla. St. His NFL career has been nothing but disappointing, IMO.

I hope he gets straightened out.

I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

The sad thing is, when he's actually been on the field, he's been impressive.

His 16 game average would be :

74 catches, 1024 yards, 5 TD, 13.8 yards per catch

Actually, it's been pretty impressive when he plays. Shame he's so self-destructive.

This makes the "Who made Who?" Blackmon/Weeden debate almost hysterical in a sense that people were arguing of who they would of rather had..

One never plays, and the other one makes you wish he never did...

Lol so true! I remember how I wanted Blackmon badly...though he's similar to Watkins in size...he always seemed to play much bigger...and his violation I think his freshman year was something many including I overlooked...which oddly enough Watkins had the same violation (both alcohol related) Hopefully Blackmon realizes this it...and mans up...hopefully Watkins sees what happened to Blackmon and learns to steer clear... For some reason I see St. Louis taking Watkins at #2 and bluffing how they are content with Chris Givens and Tavon Austin as starters...I think Watkins and Givens and Austin in the slot is perhaps the fastest explosive trio in the league

Yeah I think the Rams have no intention of taking a first round tackle just because Jake Long got hurt. Watkins is what that team needs more than anything else. A couple safeties and a guard. They are fine with saffold holding the tackle spot until long is back. They are also fine with Chris long and Robert Quinn at DE.

Completely agree...They can take a swing tackle in the middle rounds and shore up their oline while taking the supremely talented Watkins at #2...Jeff Fisher yearly bluffs and pats every players play...normally slides down...but I think if they draft Watkins, there's zero excuses for Bradford... And what ultimately the Rams want to see...Givens is basically a lightning bolt to zip down the field...Tavon Austin is in the Percy Harvin mold...they need that bona fide star WR Watkins...Quick this is his make or break year...as it stands their TE Cook is their most complete receiver...the Rams actually have a ton of talent everywhere...Ogeltree, Long, Quinn, Lauranitis, McDonald, Dunbar, Jake Long, Staffold,Trumaine Johnson, Jankins, Givens, Austin, Bradford, Stacy...they just play in a rough division and their QB is always hurt...Cleve Steve whos your pick for the Browns selection? I kind of want Bridgewater with a trade down...then again the QBs this year tend to be a crap shoot

Good overview of where the Rams are at.

I'm happy with one of Manziel, Carr, or Bridgewater... Probably in that order. I would not trade down if one, two, or three of them were available. I think the QBs falling stuff is just CYA material from the media after the Geno Smith drop last year. 6 of the top 8 teams in the draft have unsettled QB spots. No way I'm chancing oI'm of them drops if I can take one where I'm at.

JMO.
