'Condoleezza Rice pulls out of Rutgers speech after protests' http://news.yahoo.com/condoleezza-rice-pulls-rutgers-speech-protests-155857522--sector.html By Victoria Cavaliere May 3, 2014 11:58 AM NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pulled out of delivering the commencement speech at Rutgers University in New Jersey on Saturday, following a months-long protest by students and faculty over her role in the Iraq war. Rice was the face of foreign policy under President George W. Bush, a Republican, serving as national security advisor from 2001 to 2005, and later as secretary of state. She was a leading hawk in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war. In her statement, Rice said her role in the festivities had become a "distraction". "I understand and embrace the purpose of the commencement ceremony and I am simply unwilling to detract from it in any way," she said. Rutgers President Robert Barchi's selection of Rice in February was met with protests by staff and students. A group of faculty members passed a resolution in February calling on the university to rescind its invitation, saying Rice had played "a prominent role in the administration's effort to mislead the American people about the presence of weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq. In April, students staged a sit-in at an administrative building, holding signs that accused Rice and other Bush administration officials of war crimes. Bush's administration cited its belief that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's government held weapons of mass destruction to justify the decision to go to war. U.S. and allied forces later found that such stockpiles did not exist. Supporters of the war argued that intelligence available at the time concluded Iraq held the banned weapons and noted that even some countries that opposed the invasion agreed with the assessment. In the statement, Rice said she was "honored to have served my country. I have defended America's belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas." Rice was due to speak on May 18 at the Rutgers football stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. The school did not immediately announce a replacement. Good for them. If they don't like who is at their graduation then they should have the power to veto it.

The same people who insist accountability for Benghazi never speak of the war crimes charges involving that administration.

Rice might be the only one in the Bush Admin that I actually have respect for.. Too bad, she's an interesting person. They are missing out on a great speaker..

Agreed. I know it's within the students' rights, but I have to disagree with them. She had a very good dialogue with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, and you can even tell that he has respect for her, which really surprised me.

Good to see that the open-minded left is still showing that tolerance of diversity and differing opinions that we have all come to know and love.

Well, neither JFK or LBJ will be speaking at their college as they are dead. Condi, however, isn't and was going to speak at their college. That is why they focused on Condi.

Glad to be of service.
Actually, I respect the heck out of Condi Rice, and wish that she was more involved politically. I think that this country would be a whole lot better with leaders like her. Unfortunately, she seems far too intelligent to get involved with politics and run for office.
If I could pick one living person to sit down with and talk with, she would be on a very short list.

Considering many of these kids spent a lot of money/debt and won't get what they were looking for (career)...I can see how Rice was relevant.

I, for one, think they have a valid point, but I don't think my disagreement or viewpoint of her would propel me to protest her speaking at my commencement. I like to hear what people have to say, regardless of what I think of that person.

No they don't. Their premise is that she lied, which has never been proven to be true... in fact if the President of the college really wants to prove a point, he'll go get Eric Holder to speak.. that guy has lied about everything since the day he was sworn in.. let's see if they protest that.

To me there is a set of facts and what one believes. Those are often two very different things.
Many times in car accidents, those involved are basing what they actually believe upon facts. Yet their versions of what the truth is are totally different.
Same goes with politics. For those who actually believe that Iraq was a manufactured war, many of our own military were killed or were mamed for life. So were at least tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens.
Now I'm not saying that's what happened, nor am I dismissing that's what happened. But I do believe that the unbelievable loss of human life is more the underlying issue with these students than simply a lie itself. It's the huge amount of the loss of human life that the lie led to that I believe outrages them most.
And if it were my firm belief that this war was manufactured, I would agree with their sentiment.

Also DC, many people have been sent to prison on circumstantial evidence. Nobody has proven with hard evidence that someone is guilty. They base circumstances often times without DNA or a murder weapon to send people to prison.
So I can see how people can look at the circumstances surrounding the Iraq war to arrive at the conclusion it was a manufactured war without having hard evidence to prove it 100%.

Fair point, but my point was that any institution of higher learning should demand veiwpoints of all sides of issues and should be held to those standards, for the sake of the students and keep them openminded for their future and, the countries future.... after all.... they are supposed to be our future leaders IMO.

And if you are going to get a person who has been in national politics, ever, you are going to have a person that has, at some point, lied and pissed a lot of people off. Then it comes down to which parties lies are you willing to listen to.
I'm sure they are up in arms over lies and lives lost but in the end, this has far more to do with her association with George Bush... Most of these seniors were what, 10 or 11 years old when we invaded Iraq? if this was Hillary or somebody from a party most of them probably subscribe too.. those issues wouldn't be issues any more.

Where as I believe the tens of thousands of life's lost surrounding the perceived lie is more the issue than anything.
As an example, I don't think you would have seen near the outrage had it have been Colin Powell, who chose to leave, rather than stay and uphold the former administration.

Condi is the best thing that could ever happen if she would run for a political position. I respect her far more than any candidate. Maybe she is too smart to run. But dang she is the only person there with their head screwed on straight.

I just watched an interveiw with the so-called leader of the anti-RICE group and an interview with a another student at rutgers and their premise [or talking points ] are that she is a war criminal, with no evidence that I know of or they can prove this accusation. If i was her I would force the UNIV. of RUTGERS to get to the bottom of this or start a slander suit against RUTGERS maybe a court ruling in her favor may put an end to these liberal lies that proffessors at these so-called GREAT institutions are the ones that should be outed for what they are.

Well, per UN Charter the U.S. couldn't declare war on Iraq without UN approval, which they didn't get. So technically by international standards they would be considered War Criminals, but no one really cares about that stuff at the UN.

The axiom .... "Anyone who wants to be President shouldn't be allowed to run" proves itself true over and over and over again ..... especially lately.
