For those of you that drink vodka, what is your favorite brand? Primarily, I'm a bourbon man (Woodford Reserve, Old Pogue), but when I do go with vodka, I stick with Three Olive, as I feel it's the best vodka for what I pay for it. But tonight I will splurge if necessary. Doing martini's. Anyone compare/contrast Belvedere vs. Grey Goose vs. Ketel One vs. any other high end vodka available at the liquor store that I'm missing? Any input is appreciated

Goose is my favorite, but if you are making martini's, I wouldn't use it. I'd probably go with Absolut instead.. it's a lot cheaper (still decent though) and I doubt you will even be able to tell the difference in a mixed drink.
I'm not really a vodka guy either though, so take it fwiw.

I guess it depends on if you are making those girly martini's or what, but you can definitely tell the difference between absolute and grey goose.
Get the goose tonight.

Standard fare for mixed drinks: Absolut was always my gig Shots or 'fancy stuff': Goose or Three Olives
after the 5th or 6th one though... does it really matter?

No girly stuff for me. Either straight up, or with a hint of olive juice for a dirty martini.

My favorite? Absolut, absolutely.

I always go with Belvedere...especially when I drink it straight. Three Olives is good as well. Or if you want to try something different go with Effen.....

'Toad here. Former bartender, bar manager, restaurant manager, and current F&B Director (part-time raging alcolholic ). Lucky for you I AM a vodka man.
You've got options, but here's a few things you should know.
First, Absolut is the Cuervo of Vodka's. That's to say they've gotten by on marketing and reputation for so long that people don't even realize they are a middle-ground vodka. That puts them below 'Goose, Kettle One, etc etc.
If you want to "splurge" on a good vodka, you can't go wrong with multi-distilled brands like Kettle, 'Goose, Belvedere, etc etc. It simply comes down to a choice in bottle shape, as vodka is the most flavorless of "hard" liquors. However, if you want something interesting.......something that actually has a flavor when making martini's........I'd suggest you go to a flavored vodka. 'Goose makes some flavored vodka's that are nice and smooth. Orange, citrus (lemon) etc etc. If you want a little flavor but don't want to appear "foofy" you can pick up Ciroc vodka which is made from grapes, and has a slight grape flavor to it.
Now if you want to make some REALLY nice vodka martini's, the easiest way is to pick up some flavored vodka's that have accompanying mixers. An example is a Rasberry Vodka cut with a bottle of rasberry mix specifically designed to go with Rasberry vodka. It's easy and tastes really good.
Stay away from Smirnoff. It's not very good. And don't overpay for stuff like Tito's (potato vodka). It's all marketing.
Goodluck, and have one for the ditch!

well straight up or on the rocks, you'll be able to tell a difference for sure.
Just get some good whiskey or rum (or bourbon) for yourself and vodka for the females.

just a small sample of people, but my wife and i were out with another couple and had a little vodka challenge...we bought a shot each of Absolut, Stoli, Ketel One, and Grey Goose... the bartender wrote which was which on the bottom of napkins under each glass and we did a little guessing game and selection of our favorite...some of our guesses had Ketel and Grey flipflopped, but Grey Goose won out as best for all 4 of us... Absolut is fine in a mixed drink, but in comparison, we were convinced the bartender had slipped in a shot of rubbing alcohol...totally nasty vs the others... kind of a fun drinking game for the 'elderly'
Browns fans are born with it...

Extra dry martini's are my favorite drink. I usually just drink them at home, becuase they are WAY too expensive at bars. Chopin is by far my favorite vodka. http://www.chopinvodka.com/main.htmOh, and get some good stuffed olives for an added twist. I like either blue cheese, garlic, or habanero. Sometimes I'll do one of each.

I went with the Ciroc...something about being distilled from grapes appealed to me. If it tastes like crap, then call me a sucker for good marketing. If I can still type when I get home tonight, I may add a review to this thread.
Thank you for all the opinions - esp. 'Toad. I totally agree with you on Absolute. However, one cannot go wrong with Absolute Peppar for a Bloody Mary.
I've been in a kick of doing the higher-end hard stuff about once a month now. Got some Cabo Wabo tequila (and I'm certainly not a tequila guy) last month, and once chilled, drank that stuff straight up and it was fabulous.
Like I said, I am a bourbon guy, strictly stick to Woodford and Old Pogue, which are two of the extremeley higher end bourbons. Blantons is the best I've ever had. Can't find it in Ohio, so it's fun to hit up the Liquor Barn every time I take a trip to Kentucky.
There were some rum people in this thread - have you had Appleton Estates? It's excellent.
Well, better get ready for "Bond night" tonight.

My friends and family swear by Three Olives Vodka. When we're up at Catawba Island for a weekend they go through that stuff like water. They get the Cherry flavor and add in Cranberry juice. I thought it was just a phase but it's been three years and they're still hitting the stuff over summer. Me, I don't touch the stuff, I drink beer and margiritas only. I'll be having my trifecta tomorrow night: Corona with lime, margiritas and shots of tequila. Mmmmmm...

A friend told me about 3 Olives a few years ago - around '01. It really is a good vodka for mid $20's - and I'm not even talking about their flavored stuff (I have more friends than I can count that are addictede to the 3 Olive grape and Sprite). I like the original, good ole vodka.
Around '01-02, when they were really trying to market the stuff hard, I walked into the liquor store for a small bottle. Around it's neck was a rebate coupon - $10 mail-in rebate. The actual price of the vodka - $10.05. 3 Olives won my heart that day.

While Absolut and Goose may be considered top-of-the-line by most, I prefer the drink of the Czar, definitely Stoli.

Belvedere is my fave but I rarely mix it. For mixing I use Tangueray (sp?) Sterling. Same price as Absolut but much better IMHO. I've had some friends try it (not knowing what it was) that are big Vodka snobs that were floored when I told them what it is.

You've got to get loose with the 'Goose.
Not a martini, but a fun simmer drink: fill a shaker with ice 2 shots of Grey Goose Citron splash of Real Lemon (in the little plastic lemons) fill remainder of shaker with grape (or whatever flavor you prefer)Gatorade shake and strain into glass and enjoy
tastes just like a jolly rancher and with the Gatorade you'll be well on your way before you even realize it but not a fall down sloppy drunk. Kinda' like how bums mix Mad Dog and M&Ms for the buzz with a sugar rush.
Also, the ladies love them

I am a gin man,....Tanqueray is the bomb. I squirt a little lemon juice in the bottom of an iced glass and sprinkle just a tiny bit of salt in there before a half glass of crushed ice. After the gin, cover the top of the mix with a layer of the olive juice from the jar.

I stick with the brown. Prefer Jamesons. If I drink the clear---then its Bombay Sapphire.
And on occassions I go for the Sauza Hornitos---best Tequila ever.
Don't really like Vodka.

I love to drink for the taste, (your recipe sounds good),...but I stray from attacking The Buzz,...I prefer to stay in control. However, when the wife is buzzed too, then it's definitely a lot of fun.

I don't mind gin, but only when mixed with tonic... I'll squeeze a lemon, add 2-3 oz of Tangueray Sterling (Vodka) and a packet of Sugar in the Raw - vigorous shake, then pour over ice. Like a Caiprinha but with Vodka instead of Cachaca. Great summer drink.

J/C... If I'm in the mood for good vodka, I'll have the Goose. Belvedere is good, but I like Goose better. Unfortunately, the best vodka is not imported into the country. I've only had it a couple times when my friend brought it home with him from Moscow. It's called Russia Standard. Heck, I'd be drunk like Yeltsin if I could get that stuff all the time. Usually, I'm not too much of a connoisseur because I've gotten into Vodka Gimlets (vodka and lime juice) and the lime overpowers the vodka anyway so the quality isn't a big issue. I drink shots of Cuervo when I drink tequila because if I'm drinking tequila, I want a tequila that leaves a mark. Of course I drink domestic beer or Labatt's Blue, so my pallette is pretty easy to please. And if you want a good, simple 3 Olives Cherry drink. Mix shot of 3 Olives Cherry Vodka with Coca-Cola. The result is a cherry coke that tastes just like Cherry Coke. Really good stuff. When the Bears came to Cleveland 2 years ago for a regular season game, the Bears' fans tailgating next to us had 3 Olives and coke and they were sharing. Good times! They were good fans (and it was OK, we beat them that day ).

What other kind of drinks does everyone like? Personally, I try to keep it simple, i.e. no more than 2 ingredients not counting ice. And nothing fancy. Some good ones off the top of my head... Crown Royal on the rocks SoCo on the rocks Grey Goose on the rocks Crown and coke, Captain and coke Captain and sprite (tastes like cream soda) Absolut citron and sprite Goose and redbull shots of Goldschlagger and/or Jager (they are actually pretty good together) Jameson and Baileys Baileys on the rocks Coors light and a couple random microbrews

Lets see.............. Jack and ginger ale or Jack on the rocks with a splash of water. Jamesons and orange juice. (perfect for breakfast) Bombay Sapphire and Tonic Tequila straight and in dubious volumes Heineken with a lemon La Fin Du Monde (fancy beer from Quebec 9%) Chimay Cinq Cents (fancy trappist beer) Mickeys Malt Liquor when I'm counting my change. Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams when I want a good tasty beer. 12 pack of Labatts, Warsteiner, or Bud when I drink in heavy volumes---like when I'm crashing out after a week long methamphetamine bender. Yea, that's Derden.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......
