I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theory but it does beg the question, if the rule and the punishment are actually spelled out somewhere, what are they waiting for? Make the announcement..
I'm not big on conspiracy either, but I asked that because I essentially have the same question as you, whats the hold up, what's taking so long to make an announcement?
I guess it could be that they are sorting out the failed test vs the missed test as has been reported. Not sure.. Not sure of anything.
I think it falls into a very grey area legally and lawyers are involved and they want to make the correct ruling.
Are you speaking of the grey area between Failing and Missing a test?
If so, I thought the rules were clear, Fail, you are suspended, Miss, you are suspended.
I didn't know there was a difference. I think there should be however.

Because they need to go through their appeal process.
This info was brought up over a month ago. To be exact, Friday of the draft weekend.
So That should have been plenty of time to appeal and get a ruling.

Pettine: C'mon Commish. Pot isn't THAT big a deal.
Goodell: Maybe not. But I have a reputation to keep. I'm sure you understand that.
Pettine: I certainly do, Roger. Can I call you Roger? I also understand you want to increase revenue streams by marketing top players in the NFL. I've got your future marketing champion in Manziel. You know the guy that makes the money sign in the air and children all across the country are joining in with him. I got pictures right here on my phone....I'll show you.
Goodell: Possibly.
Pettine: Don't give me "possibly". He's a gold mine and you know it. However, I really think Hoyer is securely ahead of Manziel in just about every way. It's a shame those marketing dollars will have to ride the bench this year..... maybe even a few years if Hoyer takes advantage of his chance. Heck, just the other day Farmer was talking about a possible contract extension w/ his agent. We really like him.
Goodell: Alright, alright. I'm smelling what you're stepping in. So what do you want?
Pettine: I want Gordon. You want Manziel. I'm sure we can come to a reasonable, mutually beneficial conclusion to this mess, can't we?
You forgot this part...
Pettine: Roger, this is a really nice place you got here. Be a shame if anything happened to it. How's the wife and kids? Aren't they all spending the day together at the mall today? Just sayin'....
Ha! Well done.

7. Can we get a resolution on the Josh Gordon situation already? The problematic receiver was notified of his 2013 suspension exactly one year and one day ago on June 9.
http://www.espncleveland.com/page.php?page_id=157
Gordon's positive test in February likely pushes him into Stage 3 of the program, according to league sources, where he faces banishment from the NFL for at least one calendar year if he fails another test.
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/06/cleveland_browns_wr_josh_gordo_1.html
these are from his last failed test. I guess it just takes this long to go through everything? june 9 it was announced last year so what has it been? 4 days longer? maybe he didn't get caught until the end of feb instead of the start? lmao

Oh I know about the "claims" from "unnamed sources", which is how so much misinformation gets started. I'm simply not buying into that.
In every case that I know of to date, the suspensions have been announced by the NFL, after which the player has the right to an appeal.
In Gordon's case, the NFL has made no such announcement. Maybe this case is different, but I won't believe that until I see some solid evidence of it. And I don't consider "unnamed sources" as such evidence.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'd consider you look into the other players who were suspended by the NFL due to drugs. You never heard of Joe Haden or the Jags guy appealing their suspension, probably because they already tried to appeal it. I've only heard of Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman appealing their suspension. Richard Sherman was appealing his suspension before it took into effect and Brandon Browner was appealing a suspension from years earlier.

Haden, who reportedly tested positive in the offseason for the stimulant Adderall, played in Sunday's season opener against Philadelphia. He had an interception and six tackles in Cleveland's 17-16 loss. Haden has not commented on his ordeal since the report first surfaced on espncleveland.com during training camp.
Haden recently had his appeal heard on the suspension, which has been hanging over the Browns for weeks. The league does not announce suspensions until after the appeal process is complete to protect the player's privacy.
The league did not provide any details about Haden's violation.

yea I did hear about haden appeal. and while these things might leak the nfl doesn't announce suspensions until after the appeal process is complete. come to think of it I guess some appeal take longer than others?

Doesn't his punishment need to be announced before he can appeal?
Isn't the process usually:
1. Get caught 2. Investigate a little 3. Issue punishment 4. Appeal 5. Rule on appeal 6. Serve punishment if required...
They seem to be stuck in the "investigate" phase...

Normally, but I think with the fact that drug issues could destroy a player's endorsement deal that they want to make sure they are guilty without a doubt.

It probably is, but that doesn't mean all is made public. Could be all have agreed that nothing is said in a public forum until the process has run it's course.

Maybe its just a big misunderstanding. Maybe there will be no suspension, and we'll have Gordon for the whole season. Maybe I really am Kate Upton's Dream Guy.

Or maybe Justin Upton.
Point is, who knows? The NFL will announce when they announce. They will do it once they have all the information.
I don't think they liked it with decisions being reversed. Not that the decision was reversed, but because it was reversed because new information surfaced. I think they want to get it right.

The NFL is trying to limit their liability with this suspension so they can't be sued after they relax the pot rule. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL lawyers were negotiating with Gordon's agent.

I highly doubt they can or will make any changes to marijuana rules until after the season. They're going to have to negotiate with the players' union, and there's going to be give-and-take.
The NFL is in a bit of a bind, though...Manziel has quickly become a huge attraction, and the odds of his success at the pro level are slim. He needs every advantage he can to succeed, and Gordon certainly represents that.
They're in a tough spot, but I don't doubt that if they can find an excuse for leeway, they will. But it's not that easy. If they let Gordon slide even a few inches, they're inviting lawsuits from everyone and anyone who took the brunt of their punishments.

I doubt that....at least the negotiating part. The rules as they stand are pretty clear cut. Are they trying to find a way to lighten the blow without risking legal action by players who were suspended under the same rules....possibly.

not only do I think the nfl shouldn't lighten the punishment for it but I think they should make it like peds. 3 strikes and your out and never play again. whats more uncle sam should make it mandatory that any one caught with pot more than once should be operated on so they cannot have kids. cannot be around children, and should have there own little colonies until the rot of drugs is burned out of our country.
I just want to thank all the pot heads on the board for showing me what a widespread and dangerous problem this really is. even California is saying "wow" "we don't want the problems Denver has"
not only that but I am going to try to get a referendum for the 2016 election to implement a constitutional amendment to do the things above.

That's obviously just an opinion because I've seen no reports that would make those points..

The only reason that would happen in spite of the overwhelming proof of the harm pot does to people is because a bit part of the harm it does is changing to people to where they don't care. An excellent way to manipulate poor voters. Sadly your probably right...just not for the reason you think...

There's a big difference between predicting the future and being aware of the inevitable.
Are you honestly trying to equate knowing winning lottery numbers in advance with being able to recognize that marijuana will be federally legal within 5 years?

I don't think that the normally comment on "non-suspensions". If this story had never broken, then the NFL would never have made an announcement until he had a positive test, and possibly after his appeal as well. If Gordon didn't really fail a test, the NFL may never comment. (though in a case like this, if he were innocent, I find it hard to believe that they would allow a player to play the entire season under a cloud of suspicion)

Because it's out there they have to comment. Like you said, they can't let him play the year under a cloud like that. If nothing else, the TEAM needs an answer so they know how to prepare.
The question is, WHEN will they respond.
