Well I heard a lot of the same thing when Horton came in here. so forgive me for not buying into all of this before it happens.
That's why the power rankings last year were far more accurate than many of the posts on the board were.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Thanks Toad.
Like I said though, I understand Browns have deficiencies at WR 2, FB, FS, OG/RT, Linebacker, and possibly CB.
But is that unusual across the league?
A team like the Broncos last season, the superbowl runner up.. weren't they practically riddled with holes? As best I can recall they had a somewhat decent OL (was it any better than ours?) and Manning, good WRs, Julius Thomas, and then a pretty lousy defense in general.
I don't think having holes at positions is unusual. I think the ranking system for teams is pretty meaningless, it seems to me rank falls into the top tier and not the top tier. Every team has fairly significant holes. I think having superstars at important positions or having an entire unit being a wrecking force is necessary for victory.
That is part of the reason I like doubling down with Gilbert and grabbing Manziel. Having a great secondary and a good QB can do a lot for a team.
Even more so that in the past, if you have a great QB you can win with nobodies, but there are only a few truly great QB's in this league.
I believe too many people believe that if we get a good QB we're suddenly going to be a playoff caliber team. When you compare our positional players against the positional players of playoff caliber teams...QB notwithstanding...we fall short, and that's a big part of this ranking.
I don't think we're the worst team in the league when you compare talent-against-talent, but when push comes to shove we don't stack up to good teams.
The Browns know this. Trading back to gain an extra 1st in 2015 is a very good indicator of that. Not spending lavishly on free agents is also a good indicator of that.
We're not the 32nd worst team in terms of talent, but we're also not a good QB away from being a playoff team. There are just too many question marks, flat-out holes, and lack of depth right now. The upside is that we're young and filled with high-draft players.

And I'm not sure we have that problem solved yet. At best it's an unknown. I'm not saying we might not have that problem solved over the long term. But once again, it's an unknown. Which is why we're rated so low.
Our QB situation improved the day we let Weeden go, even if our backup was a 3 year old toddler, it improved.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

As a general rule, I don't side with the logic of addition by subtraction. But in this instance I would probably make an exception.

I don't have enough knowledge about the talent across the league to really comment.
I'd like to read through a breakdown of like football outsider / PFF team rankings position by position to see where we stack up (at least in their opinion). Do you know of any such in depth ranking?
I tend to think if we paired up Gordon and Cameron a QB that was good enough we'd have enough firepower to compete with anyone. The only real horrific worst in the league play I saw last season was at QB, ILB, and RB.

I think more than anything, we need to establish an identity, especially on offense. That's the one true thing that I feel like we've lacked since '07. Whether it's going after a phenomenal QB and going toward the vertical offense, ground-and-pound, great secondary, aggressive front 7, etc. I think we just need to establish a true positive identity.

Not sure if they have such in-depth comparisons at this point but it's possible. Looking around at other places which have post-draft rankings show some non-national names (Fansided, Bleacher Report, etc) having the Browns ranked 24th, 25th, etc.
Another writer on NFL.com had us ranked 27th, pre-draft.
Pre-free agency (and obviously pre-draft) Sports Illustrated had us 32nd.
If I had to put my own number to where I think we rank, it would be in the low-to-mid 20's, which in spite of my negative-sounding tone, is higher than most national writers rank us.

Our super bowl odds currently have us tied for 24th if that means anything.. which it doesn't. Ahead of Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Jacksonville, and Oakland... And tied with St. Louis, Tennessee, NY Jets, and Buffalo And for those who like to find conspiracy in things, it shows us as the last team in that tie so it looks a lot worse than it is... web page

Those rankings don't mean anything...if they are low. If they are high, they mean everything.

No offense, but you say that every year.........and so do many others...............yet, every year the "bozos" are much closer in their predictions than you guys are.
That is a fact. Sorry.

I agree. Seems like every year 1 or 2 teams seriously outperform their prediction and a couple teams serious underperform their prediction (usually because of injury) but for the most part, the teams end up in the same 3rd of the league where they started.. maybe this is our year to be one of those teams that outperforms their prediction.
