If the Browns didn't want the Johnny Manziel circus, THEN WHY DRAFT THE GUY?

Bart Hubbuch ‏@HubbuchNYP 3m
It's going to be the highest of comedy watching the amateurs who run the Browns try to control the Johnny Manziel circus.

Of all the teams you'd think might welcome positive national pub, it would be the Browns. Instead, they told me to cancel my flight. SMH.

Browns PR director told me: "We don't want this to be a Tebow situation. It's not going to be Johnny Football Mania out there."

Bart Hubbuch ‏@HubbuchNYP 16m
Wow, the Browns told me the national media is barred from their rookie minicamp this weekend due to the team's "tight grip" on Manziel.

Sorry media we have a football program to run

Or maybe they do want the media attention but at this point prefer Manziel get to work on the play book and such instead of being on Regis and Kelly, or other such nonsense. Maybe the FO would prefer JM do something on the field first that way he has something of substance to talk about. Maybe the FO is hedging their bets. If they put JM in the press circuit then he bombs on the field we just look like the 'same old Browns'.
The press will always be there chomping at the bit to get to him. I say make them wait until JM can be a positive story for the Browns. Not just a story about a draft pick.

I guess I don't understand the desire of some to see JM all over the press. What's he got to say?

It's also a really nice way of sending a message to Manziel, his publicist(s), and his agent that the Browns are in charge here, not them.
If it detracts or distracts, it will not be tolerated.

For the first time in awhile I am developing a ton of respect for Haslam. I don't care about media attention. Take that "Tebow circus" and shove it.

Frankly, with the stupid stories about us "almost drafting Teddy", you know, "having his name on a card till 10 seconds before the pick" ..... and "having a homeless guy make the pick for Haslam" ..... I would be cautious about giving the national media access to anything at all. Those the 2 of the most stupid, idiotic sports stories I can recall reading, and I felt dumber after reading them. Who cares if the national guys are upset. What are they going to do ....... put out stories that portray the Browns in a negative light?

I heard the report on the Homeless guy.. It went like this..

Haslam made the comment that he go go out to dinner in Tennessee and no one notices him.. but in Cleveland.. everyone notices him.. even a homeless guy on the street approached him saying.. "Draft Johnny Manziel."

then the whole story got blown apart by the Media

Amen! Could not have put it better myself.

If you don't want the circus tell the clowns to stay home. So if JM is the real deal and we become a playoff contender this guy or other media bozos aren't going to cover it?

Browns limiting media access to rookie minicamp

Posted by Josh Alper on May 14, 2014, 7:09 AM EDT

The Browns traded up from the 26th pick to the 22nd pick to draft Johnny Manziel last week, a move that generated enough excitement in Cleveland that they sold more than 1,000 season tickets in the day after Manziel joined the team.

For a franchise that has had little to be excited about since rejoining the league in 1999, that kind of enthusiasm would seem to be welcomed. The same could be said of the money that comes from selling No. 2 jerseys like the one LeBron James sported after Manziel was drafted, but the Browns want to limit how much of Manziel the world gets to see.

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that the Browns told him not to bother coming to cover the team’s rookie minicamp because they were limiting media access to local writers. NFL rules allow teams to make their own decisions about media access to rookie minicamps, but they must allow media to attend the mandatory veteran minicamp later in the offseason.

“We don’t want this to be a Tebow situation. It’s not going to be Johnny Football Mania out there,” a Browns spokesman told Hubbuch.

You can understand the idea of limiting the focus on Manziel while the team is insisting that he act like a backup quarterback and owner Jimmy Haslam is delivering what has to be the first reminder in history that Cleveland is not Hollywood, but the Browns are going to have to embrace the mania at some point if Manziel becomes the player they want him to be. If they’re not willing to do that, they probably shouldn’t have drafted Johnny Football in the first place.

I must admit, it's a lot of fun to watch the national media balling because they can't get their way. Saying things like, "If you didn't want us to make a circus of it, you shouldn't have drafted him" ... as if the only reason to draft a guy is to get the media circus that comes with it.

What a bunch of butt-hurt bellyache'rs.

And while you may be able to delay it for a very brief period of time, the circus is coming and this part of the article is quite accurate.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

My only concern with this is that if you don't give them some access, give them some quotes and facts to report on, if you keep them at a distance.. they will just start to speculate and make things,up or spin a story out of the flimsiest of rumors. That's how the media works, sad as that may be...

Suddenly JFF turns to Hoyer walking off the practice field and says emphatically, "Dude, I don't want to go to Taco Bell again, we've been there 3 times this week. I really want to go to Wendys" and it's reported by the guy from outside the fence that JFF and Hoyer had a heated conversation after practice.

Here's the thing about the Media. If you don't let them in, they just make up stuff that you will eventually need to respond to.

since they pretty much do that anyway, I don't see an upside to letting them come to camp. Just a thought

I see this as a winner in two ways.

Number One; it limits the amount of media frenzy that can be pumped up about Manziel until such a time as he's settled into a role with the team.

Number Two; it also has the benefit of throwing the local media a huge bone. They get the first shot with a fair bit of exclusivity of seeing Manziel with the team. That's a nice touch and if I were a PR type with the team I'd remind the locals of how much we love them.

Manziel will be around for a while. Give it some time.
