The Browns didn't just draft a quarterback. They drafted a freaking marketing machine: Johnny Manziel's No. 2 Browns jersey is the NFL Shop's top-selling jersey through the first portion of 2014's fiscal year.
Darren Rovell of ESPN reports the league will announce Manziel as the top-selling jersey on Monday, with the Browns quarterback beating out Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson for the top-selling spot.
The Super Bowl champion Seahawks did dominate the list though: Wilson (2nd), Richard Sherman (5th), Marshawn Lynch (11th) and Earl Thomas (12th) check in, as did the "12th Man" jersey many Seattle fans wear (10th!).
Other notable NFC West names include Colin Kaepernick (3rd) and Rams rookie Michael Sam (6th), the first openly-gay player in NFL history. (It's doubtful Tony Dungy purchased a jersey.)
Several rookies will also crack the top 25: Teddy Bridgewater (13th), Jadeveon Clowney (16th) and Blake Bortles (18th).
The biggest surprise of all, though? The Browns are the THIRD best-selling team. In the NFL. Out of all the teams!

That Sam, a guy who is no guarantee to even make his team, is 6th in jersey sales, says a lot. What it says I'm not sure though. If he doesn't show well in preseason, I bet the NFL tells the Rams to still keep him on their roster, and they'll make it up to them in the compensatory picks next year .....

I think it says there are available markets that the NFL can grow (or exploit).
Look just a few years back with Jeremy Lin. Linsanity didn't just hit NBA and general sports fans, the circus was wide enough to bring in non-sports fans too (though probably a larger impact was from the Asian community). He was a fresh face, good story, and a racial novelty within the NBA. So "it" sold well.
Sam is doing the same thing. It's still a little new because he hasn't played yet.
They'll both end up in the same place in a few years in my opinion. Lin is already kind of an obscure player after signing that big deal in Houston and playing so-so (and most recently being shipped to LA as a "name" and a salary dump). I think Sam will stick, but won't be good enough to match the hype. He'll play in the league for 3-4 years.
I wish him the best, just like any newly drafted player.
