You all know the debate we were having about concussions when the Trent Green thing came up a few weeks back.. Well, I knew it was bad but had no idea how bad,, http://sports.aol.com/nfl/story/_a/sport...S00010000000001 Quote:
Sports Concussions Called a 'Ticking Time Bomb' Many Worried About Long-Term Impact of Injuries By EDDIE PELLS AP Sports MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - An estimated 350,000 athletes endure some kind of head injury while playing sports every year in the United States, and that's only counting the ones who lose consciousness after impact.
Players Knocked Out

Talk About It: Post Thoughts
Counting the rest of the dings, pings and "rung bells" that result in concussions, the total could be as high as 3.8 million.
That's why concussions are, in the words of agent Leigh Steinberg, "a health epidemic, the consequences of which are a ticking time bomb that may not be seen in their totality for 10, 15 or 20 years."
Steinberg and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon, who suffered the first of his half-dozen concussions at age 11, headlined a summit Friday designed to draw attention to the growing problem of concussions in sports.
It's a problem most widely recognized in the NFL, where the suicide of former defensive back Andre Waters and the story of former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson's hurried return to the field made recent headlines.
But the issue has repercussions in almost every sport, at almost every level.
"A lot of parents aren't aware of what concussions are and what the severity is," Moon said. "My first concussion didn't necessarily come from a collision. It came from my head slamming against the infield where we practiced on a baseball diamond."
Indeed, determining the cause of concussions and both the immediate and long-term effects they have is a constantly shifting science.
Steinberg touted numbers from a series of recent studies, hoping the gravity of the new stats will intensify the debate and bring quicker change.
"What are the stakes?" Steinberg said. "It's one thing to go out and play football and understand that when you turn 40, you can bend over to pick up your child and have aches and pains. It's another thing to bend down and not be able to identify that child."

MORE FANHOUSE · NCAA Football | Hoops | NBA · Baseball | NASCAR | NHL One study showed that athletes are six times more likely to suffer a second concussion if they return within a week of the first one. A client of Steinberg's, former 49ers quarterback Steve Young, retired after precisely that kind of quick return and repeat injury.
Other studies showed that in cases where athletes had three or more concussions over their lifetime, they were five times more at risk for early onset Alzheimer's disease, three times more at risk of significant memory loss and four times more likely to have severely elevated depression.
The NFL and the NFL Players Association have done some things to lessen the impact of head injuries - most notably with rules changes and the gradual elimination of Astroturf as a playing surface. They're looking at changes in helmets and mouthpieces to lessen the severity of hits to the head.
Steinberg some day also would like to see neurologists present on every NFL sideline and more effective use of baseline tests that establish players' capabilities before they get injured and can be used as good markers for the tests they take after concussions.
Not as easily changed is the football player mentality. From a young age, they're taught to play in pain, to sacrifice their bodies, to stay on the field and to make their coaches happy.
"Most athletes are in a state of denial," Steinberg said. "They're taught to ignore pain."
He hopes some of the most recent studies will lead NFL management to conclude that rushing players back isn't in anyone's best interest. After all, is getting a player back for one week worth risking him for the rest of the season - or his career? It's a question that has gained more traction as salaries and signing bonuses have exploded over the past decade.
Almost as difficult as changing the mind-set simply is determining what is or isn't a concussion, which would translate into determining the kind of medical attention these players receive.
To illustrate this challenge, one doctor showed two plays from a recent Oregon-Arizona college football game. One showed a player's helmet getting popped off after a particularly vicious hit made under his chin. Another showed one player knocking his teammate to the ground in a congratulatory body bump after a good defensive play.
The player in the first example walked away with a cut lip. The player in the second example had a concussion because his head banged against the turf as he received the congrats.
"It goes to show that we can be fooled by what we see," said Kevin Guskiewicz, a specialist from the University of North Carolina who studies the biomechanics of sports concussions.
I didn't realize one guy killed himself (andre Waters) and both Troy Aikman and Steve Young were forced from the game because of all the concussions they had over the years..
I was concerned about us getting Green after that concussion he had.. which by all accounts, was about as severe as they come...
So, I guess I'm saying that I'm glad we aren't getting Green!

I felt sorry for Aikman toward the end of his career, he was getting his bell rung so much and suffering concussions it got hard to watch him take a hit, wondering if he was going to get up or be able to see straight.

The trainer for the Eagles told Ron Jaworski that he suffered THIRTY-TWO concussions in his career in Philly. Back then, guys just "saw stars" and it was no big deal to go back in the game. I'm sure alot of them wish they knew then what they know now.

I think there was a link between concussions and Justin Strelzyk's death as well.

I suffered multiple concussions. Yeah, I know........it's real obvious to you guys. HaHa HeHe. Anyways.........we didn't know as much about them back then. We didn't worry about future problems. I only worried because the doc said I wasn't allowed to drink that night. I was in college.......ya' think I listened? It's kinda crazy because I took plenty of shots to the head and never got one. Then, I was undercut while jumping for a high pass coming out of the backfield. Slammed my head on the turf. Strangest feeling ever. I tried staying in the game, but I was really out of it. When I got to the hospital.......they are asking me things like my name, address, DOB, phone number, etc. Well, I knew I had all those things, but damned if I could remember them. It was like looking at a blank application where you see.................Name: ________ DOB: ___________ Address: __________. I just could not fill in the blanks. The worst part was that once I got that first one, I kept getting them.....and they sometimes happened when I wasn't even hit that hard. It got to be a pretty ugly situation and my life-long dream never materialized. On the good side..........I figure those concussions are what made me the crazy mother I am today.

My little bro got concussed in a High School football game---he totally didn't know it, but everyone else did when he huddled up on the wrong side of the ball--with the wrong team. Everyone was like, What the Hell is he doing.
Game stopped, took him out. He didn't see the field for a week.

Concussions suck! I've had them and I didn't get them from doing anything good, like playing sports.
I got mine because I've got weak/bad ankles and they give out on me at bad times, like when I'm walking down stairs. In the space of a week, I whacked my head on stuff 2 different times. Falling down a flight of stairs and slipping while getting into a car (and hitting the frame of the car). A week later and STILL had the worst headche that, to that point, I had ever flet. Took myself to the ER and the doc said I was concussed. Done it once or twice since then too. I hate that my ankles suck this bad.

Is there anything you can do about your ankles? Man, that would suck.
Be careful w/the head........I was serious when I said that you get the concussions much easier after you have had the first one. I talked to other guys who said the same thing. The headaches can be a real bear at times.

Babe, just wondering, if you fell trying to get into your car how did you hit the frame? If your floor pans or rocker panels are that rusted I would replace them.

No, that wasn't a concussion. It was actually a couple of cracked ribs from laughing so hard.

Oh yeah, that's right, you told me about that. You laughed so hard you fell off your bar stool.

The closest I have come to a concussion was about 8 years back or so. Hubby and I hit the bar that was across the way from us...walking distance. We had so many friends that got nabbed for dui's that we would walk back and forth to the bar...which was only a 4 minute walk anyways. So one winter night we went out, got our drunk on and left. Well as we walked out of the bar and started to cross the street a police car drove by. (You have to understand that where I am from in northern Ohio is such a small town that the cops have nothing better to do on a saturday night than hang out by the bars hoping to grab up a drunk or two.) So we calmly walk across the street and down the sidewalk and the cop turned down a side street. Not wanting to get popped for public intox, hubby grabbed me by the hand and jumped over a snow drift...pulling me right along with him. Well, we hit a patch of ice and went down. I fell so hard that my head bounced off the parking lot not once, but twice...HARD!!! I was seeing little birdies and was not even ready to pick myself up off the ground when hubby pulled me back to my feet and the rest of the way to the house. I probably did have a concussion but I wasn't about to call 911 to have an ambulance pick me to take my drunk butt to the emergency room so i could tell them my husband drug me over a snow drift onto ice coming home from the bar. That just sounds like a domestic case waiting to happen. LOL
