I've been in the Miami viewing area for the last couple of months, and their media is convinced all three will opt out and redo their contracts. And boy, are their fans obnoxious. I thought Cleveland fans were bad. I did enjoy all the crying when they lost.

Hey good to see you back again.

They JUST had one of the Miami radio guys on the San Diego station here ... and he just seemed to be completely oblivious of the situation. He was 100% guaranteeing that Lebron would meet up with Riley in a few days and he would just flat out convince him that he would upgrade the roster at a snap of his fingers and Lebron would re-sign like nothing happened.. It's like he had zero knowledge of how the NBA cap works. Riley can't do anything with the roster unless all three of them opt out and take some pretty hefty paycuts.

I give them credit, "Fans dress as empty seats night" is one of the most creative ideas...

The fact that they've went to 4 straight finals and are still LEARNING how to be fans makes me wish I had never gotten involved in sports fandom.. or grew up somewhere else..

My life would of been so much easier had I just grown up a Buckeyes and Packers (born in WI) fan... *sigh*

Another interesting bit ..... (kinda)

We'll see.

Who is the favorite to land LeBron James? Vegas likes Miami followed by Cleveland | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2014/06/where_will_lebron_james_play_n_1.html#incart_2box

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When LeBron James opted out of his contract with the Miami Heat earlier this morning, it created a buzz around the NBA. Suddenly, something that was only theory - James hitting free agency for the second time in his career - turned into reality.

For teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls and others, this was step one in their attempt to pry James away from Pat Riley's grip in Miami.

His decision also means the pressure has ramped up in South Beach, making the Heat have to re-evaluate the roster and likely spend more money to improve the pieces around him.

Where will LeBron James play during the 2014-2015 season? It's the question that so many around the country are trying to answer today, including in Las Vegas.

The Vegas odds have been released courtesy of RJ Bell, founder of pregame.com. Miami remains the favorite, with a return to Cleveland as the next most likely option for the game's most dominant player.

LeBron odds: Mia -600 (61%); Cle 5/1 (12%); LAC 7/1 (9%); Hou 10/1 (6%) Chi 15/1 (4%); LAL, NYK 25/1 (3%); Dal 30/1 (2%) - via sportsbook.ag

The fact that the first words out of Wondhorst's mouth was "Even LeBron doesn't know what he's going to do!" makes me likely to believe everything that happens from this point on has been carefully planned out...

Ugh. Random ESPN reporters opinion that hiring Blatt was a bad idea..

..Because maybe LeBron would want to have some say in who his coach is...

I'm not ganna be able to watch ESPN for a couple days.. this is getting stupid..

J/C…

My thought is Lebron stays in the Eastern Conference. Lebron controls the NBA and if he moves to a west coast team the NBA TV ratings would be awful, considering the time zones and viewership potential. The NBA would lose major ad revenue.

In the end, Lebron will most certainly remain in the Eastern Conference. I do not see him back in Miami especially if Wade exercises his option.

Lebron had no reason to be thrilled about Eric Spoelstra either. He wasn't exactly the biggest name, and I seem to recall that there was a great deal of speculation that Lebron would want his own head coach when he went to Miami, and that Spoelstra would be replaced with a coach that Lebron preferred.

I agree. The only way a coach might make any difference at all is if it was Riley, or Jackson, or Pops ...... a guy who is so respected as a coach that he would be a real plus .... and even then he would probably be more of a deciding factor than a primary factor.

Suppose the Cavs reject him, if it came to that. Bad karma, bad blood, the dinkus sideshow he had around leaving. Would Cleveland want him back at any price? I am torn on this one. Even this man has a shelf life.

Report: LeBron thinks “strongest option” to return to Miami; league executives expect him to stay

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...-stay/#comments

Kurt Helin Jun 25, 2014, 8:00 AM EDT

Where’s the fun in talking about free agents staying where they are?

So when LeBron James informed the Miami Heat he was opting out of his contract media reports (including PBT’s) and twitter blew up with the possibilities — Chicago, Houston, Cleveland and a couple teams in Los Angeles. It’s not just fans, pretty much every front office around the NBA started drawing up plans, just in case.

However, the reality from the start has been LeBron almost certainly will stay in Miami. He had to opt out to put pressure on the Heat to make roster changes, make sure Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh know he was serious, and most importantly to sign for less to give Pat Riley room to maneuver.

People close to LeBron don’t think he’s leaving, reports Chris Manix at Sports Illustrated.

Thus, James opts out. But it hardly indicates a desire to leave South Beach. In fact, according to a source familiar with James’ thinking, returning to Miami remains the strongest option. James has tremendous respect for Pat Riley. He has developed a strong relationship with Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. He enjoys playing with Bosh and Wade, and still believes that core can win. It just needs a little help.

What about other executives around the league.

“I’d be surprised if he didn’t go back to Miami,” said an Eastern Conference executive.

Added another, “Why would he go anywhere? He has everything he wants in Miami.”

Much like LeBron opting out in the first place, him likely staying is not really a surprise. Pretty much every story on LeBron’s landing spots have said Miami is the most logical answer (including PBT’s).

That’s not as much fun as drawing up complex trades to get LeBron and Carmelo Anthony together with the Lakers or him and Kevin Love pairing up in Cleveland. We can play around on a trade machine and come up with three team deals and try to convince ourselves why they are likely.

But Miami has always been, by far, the most likely destination. LeBron thinks so. Most people around the league know it.

(end)

P.S. Title of article is a bit misleading, me thinks.

On a 3-5 year deal? No doubt we would want him back, and would take him back. 4 years would be ideal, because that would show other players that he was committed to being here. While not every player would want to play in Cleveland, playing alongside Kyrie, Lebron, and Wiggins would definitely be a major lure.

Someone mentioned this on a cavs blog ... it would be like taking back the ex-girlfriend that treated you like crap. How could you possibly do that?

But I think it's more like the Prodigal Son returning. Sure he took half of Gilbert's fortune and squandered it. Sure he hung out with those prostitutes Wade and Bosh. But you know if he were to come back, you'd kill the flatted calf, throw a new jersey on him and welcome him back with open arms.

I don't think he would ever come back to Cleveland. When he left he was crucified by all and when he was here MANY people claimed he was a choker and gave up on his team.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Depends. Is she good looking? Is she rich? Does she know how to cook?

If yes to all three, then you take her back.

Lebron is a super model that knows how to cook. So yes, you take her....ummm him back.

Seems like a strong statement with all that has happened over the last week. Riley implying some things in his not previously scheduled presser. Riley basically saying the two really only talk via text or when they bump into each other. I realize you can have respect for someone without ever really talking to them, but this just seems contradictory to actual behavior.

I don't think that changes the fact that Miami is the favorite ... just a caution about always believing what you read. Lot of opinions stated as fact.

Report: Heat, Cavs, Rockets, Knicks, Nets top LeBron's list, not Clippers - CBSSports.com
http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-bask...st-not-clippers

ESPN reports that the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets top LeBron James' list of potential free agent destinations, in that order, and that the Clippers, surprisingly, are not at the top of that list.

As mentioned above, I'm told the Clippers are not among James' most preferred destinations. While James and Clippers point guard Chris Paul are great friends, there are concerns about the compatibility of their games. Paul is not as capable of excelling off the ball as Wade was when he adjusted to playing with James.

Beyond that, there is still the very real problem of Donald Sterling's shadow hovering over the Clippers. I was not told that this would be an issue, but as outspoken as James was about wanting Sterling out of the league, it seems implausible that he would willingly go play for the Clippers until Sterling's ouster is complete. That is not likely to happen before July 8.

via NBA - Possible landing spots for LeBron James - ESPN.

That contradicts an earlier report that James did in fact find the Clippers intriguing. The Clippers reportedly have interest too, but aren't willing to give up Blake Griffin for the best player in the world.

It's also surprising since LA is the perfect market for him. He has big entertainment plans, and has long been interested in the industry. He even had his own cartoon show. The Clippers would give him his best friend in Chris Paul, a coach he adores in Doc Rivers, and the lifestyle he wants. So them being off the list, despite multiple indications over the past few months that they are under consideration, is weird.

Meanwhile, the Knicks and Nets, even after the Knicks' trade of Tyson Chandler and Jose Calderon, would have to come pretty close to melting the constraints of mathematics to get room for Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James, and that's the only way James goes for that. The Nets would have to surrender all of their talent to make room for James, and have very little in the way of assets to rebuild in the future.

The Cavs and Heat may be what it comes down to, but the Rockets possibility hangs, specifically with this idea from the report. The Rockets trade Asik and Lin to create room to sign one of Anthony and James, then do a sign-and-trade of James Harden for the other one. It's a fascinating possibility that could see Harden moved to New York or Miami. Houston is reportedly on the list of teams Carmelo Anthony intends to meet with.

The plot thickens, as The Decision 2.0 rolls on, with Miami still the heavy favorite to retain LeBron James.

I used to say, I only want him to come back, if the Miami experiment failed, after 2011 against Dallas, and the first few rounds in the East in 2012, it looked like it might (There were LeBron for Howard talks!)

Now that he's won two, It's not that I don't want him to come back.. If he did I'd accept it, because watching the Cavs is a lot more fun when they ya know.. win.. And whatever East team he goes to is more than likely going to make the Finals next year.. Because the East is terrible..

However I will say this, if he decides to stay in Miami, or do the unthinkable, and team up with MORE superstars somewhere else, I will want nothing to do with him for his 3rd contract...

I don't want 31 year old LeBron coming in to ride out his career in Cleveland.

I don't understand why it would be surprising. The Clippers are still "the Clippers" and the owner situation won't be resolved anytime soon. And like others have said previously, the West is a bloody hand stuck in a high-speed blender. Why would you try building a team there? The free ride in the East is too much of an advantage.

I think he stays in Miami but Houston makes the most sense to me (i.e. for him) if he leaves. It's a big market, nice weather, no state income tax, Harden and Howard, and the Rockets have already shown they can poach a big time free agent... from the Lakers no less.

Chicago also makes some sense, but again, I think he will do some posturing and ultimately stay put.

With Rose and is unknown knees, I don't see why anyone would want to join that ship until he plays a full season. Thibs, Lebron, and Noah would be nice base but I don't think you can put Rose with those three in ink, maybe in pencil.

As for Melo, he might go to Chicago, probably the best fit for him. But with Lebron there too, I don't think they can afford that and how it would work on the court anyway.

At this point reporters are just showing their bias and blowing smoke up each other's backside. An ESPN report shows two New York teams are at the top of the running? Who'd of thunk it? How would the Knicks be a top destination anyway? They've got some major cap issues, and unless Lebron wants to sign for the minimum, I don't think he could get in there anyway. Unlike the Clippers, they've got some contracts that will be difficult to unload. The Nets are over the luxary cap, let alone the salary cap ... I don't see how they could possibly bring Lebron in. Unless then Heat want to happily take 23 million worth of Joe Johnson off their hands.

Listening to the guys on the radio is equally funny. They had a broadcaster from Miami on, that thought Riley would sit down with Lebron, have a talk, and magically work things out. He would have Lebron resigned by the weekend because he'd convince him that he could upgrade the roster with voodoo and rain-dancing apparently ... let's just forget that unless Wade and Bosh opt out, Miami has ZERO cap room to bring anybody in, and TWO other guys on their entire roster. Is he going to flesh out a roster better than last years by signing guys to exceptions and veteran minimums??

I was also listening to an LA station, where a few "experts" were talking about the Clippers and Lakers being the top 2 choices for Lebron.

Now, the Clippers I can see. They're honestly the best option after Miami (if Bosh and Wade opt out). They've got movable contracts and a good strong core. But they still play in the west. To get Lebron on a team with 2 guys making close to $20 million already, you're going to have to gut your roster as well. That leaves you again with 3 all-stars and spare parts. Except this time, you have to go through the Western Conference meat-grinder to get to the finals.

The Lakers are a mess. To have a chance at Lebron they would probably have to bring in Carmello too and get rid of Kobe, which likely isn't happening. The two biggest selling point the guy kept coming up with were, "But it's the Lakers!" (I swear this is the only reason Laker fans give for anything) ... and the fact that he could "pick" his own coach. Really? But I suppose you could match him with Kobe and watch them fight over alpha-dog status while the rest of the roster enjoys their time out of the D-league.

Bill Simmons is probably typing up a 10,000 essay on how Lebron to the Celtics will work, as I write this.

I don't know how Lebron honestly could think MIami is the best option for him. Wade will be 35 in 2 years, with a history of injuries. Unless Lebron is willing to spend another 5 -6 years in Miami, I don't them winning more than 1 -2 championships more with that core. Too old, and the supporting cast needs rebuilt. It took San Antonio 7 years to get their roster right to win another championship. 7 years ago Tony Parker was 25, Duncan, 31 and Ginobli 29. Those guys were in their prime for the most part.

on the Clippers --- why would the best player in the world walk into the Sterling mess? if the sale was completed months ago and it was assured that it was done, maybe he'd try to make it work. but, now?

also, if LeBron only cares about winning titles, then he goes to Sam Presti and tells him to trade Westbrook to Miami. there isn't a team that could even think about beating LeBron, Durant and Ibaka together.

Miami is the best option because they already have their "Big 3", they know their system, and most importantly ... they play in the East. Now they're going to have some major issues bringing in a roster to put around them unless Wade and Bosh opt out and take less money, but it's still a familiar situation.

Every other team out there is going to have major warts and issues. Any team in the West is going to have to strip it's roster down to the bare bones to get Lebron in under the cap with a reasonable contract. It would be the "Big 3" and spare parts just like the Heat. The biggest difference is ... you have to play through the Murder's Row that is the Western Conference just to get to the Finals. If he though beating Boston and Orlando was tough in Cleveland ... that's going to look like a cakewalk compared to what the West is like now.

In the East, there's just lack of options. Most of the "big name" destinations have major cap issues, and contracts that aren't going to be easily moved. I think someone mentioned before ... Washington might actually be his best option. They've got a lot of good, younger guys still on rookie contracts, and the cap maneuverability to get him in.

Yeah, I mentioned Washington the other day. I think they are the best fit for him in the East and OKC is the best fit for him in the West.

I don't understand why writers are putting restrictions on which teams they are looking into. If LeBron wants to go there, then they will find a way to make it happen. So, look for the best fits for him and then look at what would have to happen to get him there.

For the short term, Miami is good option. I just don''t see it as a good option years down the line. Just can't see Wade holding up. Now if they were to replace Wade, and bring in another max guy a few years down the road, then yes, Miami is a good deal.

They'll be fine long-term if LeBron stays.

There won't be any shortage of guys wanting to play in Miami, Florida for a dynasty.

If Wade opts out, LeBron stays. If he doesn't, LeBron's gone.

He's got a lot of personal stuff going on, so who knows what he does.

Like I said earlier, if I'm Miami I tell Wade that if he opts out, he'll have a nice front office job waiting for him when he hangs it up.

The criteria for if Lebron wants to go there ...
A) Are they a big market? Then yeah, of course Lebron wants to go there because he loves that team just as much as the media homers that cover that team.

B) Are they a playoff team with a USA Basketball player on it? Because Lebron is obviously "friends" with them if they play US ball, and the media loves nothing more than a super-team that they can bandwagon around.

I don't know that "If Lebron wants to go there, then he goes there" works for everybody though. Remember, to get under the cap to sign him to something reasonable, most teams are going to have to gut their roster. That might not make them a team that "Lebron wants to go to" after all is said and done. Other teams, like say the Knicks, would have to unload contracts that nobody wants, just to get him on the payroll. Teams aren't going to just up-and-say "Andrea Bargnani for $12 million? Sure, let me take him off your hands for you so you can grease the skids to a championship."

Sure, I suppose if he REALLY wants to go somewhere, he could sign for the league minimum, but if he's looking to sign for somewhere around $15-$20 million, he's going to have some issues doing it.

Wade and Bosh want their 40 mil, so offer them 40 over 4 years, it cuts their salaries in half, you can give LeBron the max (aka one of like 4-5 players that actually deserve it) and you'd have like 14 million to bring in either Melo of a couple solid players (they need big men)

Sure you'll have to deal with Wade and Bosh making 10 mil when they aren't worth it, but lets not pretend people haven't had salaries in the NBA they don't deserve..

Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I think that's realistic. I think Lebron and the big 3 know they need a lot of help, probably another max player to get the chance to win multiple titles during the life of their contracts. If Melo doesn't go there, I would expect them to go after a big man..

I bet he signs a one year deal with another opt out so he can survey the market again in a year.

But if I'm Bosh, I can collect $40 for 2 years of work now and then get more after (I don't see him retiring anytime soon). He would still get $10M/year two years from now. So he could get $60M in 4 years or $40M in 4 years.

As much as it's for the team, it's a lot to ask for a guy to just give up $20M in career earnings.

If I'm Bosh and Riley asks me to do that, I just laugh.

If I'm Wade, maybe, because he might not get another contract. So 2 years at $40M is the same as 4 years at $10M...his knees are that shot.

I don't know that "If Lebron wants to go there, then he goes there" works for everybody though. Remember, to get under the cap to sign him to something reasonable, most teams are going to have to gut their roster. That might not make them a team that "Lebron wants to go to" after all is said and done.

yes, I agree. that is why you have to look at what it would take to fit him. if it removes too much, then they get eliminated.

that's the process I went through to come up with Washington and OKC as the best choices. Golden State actually isn't that far behind either (Curry + Klay + Bogut checks off a lot of boxes you need with LeBron).

Miami does as well. If LeBron goes to any of those teams he will have to take a pay cut. If he goes back to Miami he can take a one year deal with another opt out and see what they do to help him.
