That's how I felt about him in college. Hopefully he makes me feel the same about his pro game. Otherwise I'll not like anything about him. So now I sit and wait with only the part of him I don't like on display.
Are you going to root for a guy that you don't like? If so, why?
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I have a suggestion for you and others who are taking this stance. Start backtracking now. It will save you some embarrassment down the road if JM turns out to be the guy to lead us out of the abyss.
What a horrible take. Just because browns fans want him to tone down him projecting his parting to the free world, does not mean we don't want him to be a 21 year old with money. We want hm to be a 21 year old with money and not show it to the world
I don't understand why so many fans take offense to this simple idea. Yes, get lit on the weekends, because I'm sure most rookies do. Don't end us a post card of your weekend exploits

The real entertaining part will be all the people judging him from afar yet being compelled to love him because he's winning games for their team. Are they going to demand he gets traded if he wins 10 games and is filmed drunk with his buddies during the season? I mean, come on. Are they going to say they can't root for a guy that behaves that way? It's just silliness. Talk about judgmental.
You are missing the point all together. Until he actually starts winning in the NFL, he needs to be quiet. According to one of our leaders on the team, Joe Thomas. " rookies are supposed to be seen, not heard"
So the leader on offense, and the leader on defense, both say tone it down. Not that their opinions swayed mine, but I'll side with the leaders on on the Browns with this one.

I don't feel he is "projecting his partying". Yes.. He is going out. He is not hiring film crews.. He is not asking others what they think of him doing things. I liken what is happening to him to "Princess Diana being chased by the Paparazzi". Let him live ...

Because I root for the Browns. The name on the front of the jersey, not the back. I'm not a fanboy for any player on the team. I buy no player jerseys. I prefer my athletes act like professionals on and off the field. Ultimately though, win. Just win.
I watched a ton of him in college because he was fun to watch. Hated him and his cockiness and part of me always rooted for him to get crushed... He just never did. It was hard to take my eyes off it. So I watched frequently. His antics will always make me dislike him. I absolutely loathe the 'money sign' celebration crap. But ultimately hope I have to watch it frequently because he's throwing TDs. I'll never like it. I'll always refer to him as JM or Manziel. Just win.

Which is kind of the point. This isn't the 60's anymore. People have to live accordingly. Like I have said multiple times, having fun isn't the issue here. As another poster pointed out, he had no trouble turning it off pre-draft.
Sorry, I think this is a nonsense statement. Maybe the buttoned up people who are saying "its OK to do it it's just not OK to show it" need to take a look at themselves and what they really value and think what behavior is allowed. It's OK or its not OK. People shouldn't change their lives because a bunch of idiots on the internet want to create something to display their outrage towards.
If Manziel changes the way he lives, he's letting the internet terrorists win.

You have the benefit of not liking Manziel prior to the draft.
I don't dislike him as a person. I don't think he's a bad guy.
I just think he's going to flame out in the NFL, and I'd rather he weren't on my team.

What's entertaining about that?
I've been rooting for people I dislike for decades.

Saying he lacks intelligence because he likes to party
Seriously?
I must have said ten times in Manziel threads that I don't care if he gets wasted every night.
Just like I said thirty or forty times in Gordon threads that I don't care if he smokes weed everyday.
Just be smart about it.
The one thing I don't understand from your end is this constant notion that 'he is who he is, and he isn't going to change that for anybody', as if that's some special or positive trait.
What he is is a dunce, or at the very least acting like one. SO if he doesn't plan to change, that's on him.
How many rookie QB's you think went out and got plastered during the weekends after they signed their contracts? You think Manziel's alone in that regard?
Difference is, most of them knew how to carry it.

It's a funny thing. The people who defend his actions keep avoiding the overall picture and question so, as much as I know it will yet again be ignored, I'm still going to try...
Manziel stayed out of the spotlight pre-draft. That shows he knows how to accomplish that. He said things like this wouldn't be an issue pre draft.
Now you select him in the draft, pay him a contract of over 6 mil. and he's all over the press and says he isn't going to change that. How would you feel about that if you just drafted him as your future QB and the face of your franchise and signed a contract worth over 6 mil?
It appears some of you feel that NFL owners don't care about anything but the game when they select future QB's. Do you really believe this is what those who pay him want and expect him to do? Do you really believe the owner, coaches and players want the distraction that comes with this kind of press, when Johnny Football has proven he knows how to prevent it?
It would be nice if some of those who keep defending his actions would at least attempt to address the points being brought up in such a debate for a change.

I don't disagree with your point about the owner having the right to some expectations about Manziel's behavior, I just don't agree that it is, or should be, as big an issue in the off-season. I fully expect Manziel to stay on the straight-and-narrow during TC and the regular season, and he has shown that he can.

They are also entitled to their opinion. At least JM has yet to let his teammates down by being suspended for two games that we lost, IMO, because of his decision to use a banned substance.

As a Browns fan, I certainly hope you are right. He has shown he knows how to do this and I hope, as I'm sure we all do, that this will be the case.
I do have to say it concerns me that both Haden and Thomas seem to think it's becoming a distraction and as team leaders have expressed a need for the public aspect of it to be corrected. I'm more concerned about the unity of the team than I am a single player.
Here's to hoping you're correct in your opinion.

This isn't the 60's anymore. People have to live accordingly.
The difference between the older era and this one is that we now have the internet and social media that is so far up the butts of pro athletics that they can't fart sideways without someone instantly bringing it to the attention of the world.
So the way to live accordingly... don't fart.
I can't agree with living according to the way the internet and social media dictates you need to live to avoid their scum-like behavior nor their inherent need to paint celebrities in an over-hyped, "news manner" . Yes, not a bad idea to keep out of their sight. But celebrities of a certain stature cannot keep out of the sight of the blood-sucking media as it is today.
Joe Haden admitted that he, and everybody, parties. The difference between Joe and Johnny is that nobody cares what Joe does. Johnny is the "flavor-of-the-month".
Right now a picture of Johnny Manzel at his worst is $money$ and these internet and television scum will stop at nothing to get one.
How many pictures of JF do you think they have and why do they show the one they do? (They usually only show one picture of each of Johnny's weekend getaways) Because it's the one that will rile the most controversy. What would happen if they showed a picture of Johnny at a party looking like a normal attendee? Nothing. And showing nothing is not how they make their money.
Google "pro athletic party animals" and check out some of the greatest athletics ever who party, or did in their era, all the time. The difference between them and Johnny Football is that at the moment Manzel is the item of focus so we hear about his antics weekly. The other guys not so much right now.
Some of the culprets are: Babe Ruth, Dwight Gooden, Reggie Bush, Osi Umenyiora, Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, Charles Barkley, Derek Jeter, Tiger Woods, Matt Stafford, Dennis Rodman, Rob Gronkowski, Barry Zito, Darrel Strawberry, Jay Cutler, Casey Hampton, Eli Manning, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Romo, Steve Nash, Dustin Pedroia, etc, etc...
All athletes who brought shame, misfortune and far too much unfavorable publicity to their respective franchises. Not to mention their parting ways kept them from living up to their potential.
I don't care what Johnny does so long as he is working when he is supposed to be working, (which according to him is five or six days a week).
I don't care about that just like I don't care about the gossip of any other actor, musician, political or sports celebrity. It's all gossip for gossip's sake and too many buy into it and join the horde carrying torches having been riled up by the media.
Jeesh!

It's only an issue because he came into the league with a reputation.

Training camp begins July 26th. I do not want to see pictures of JM holding anything burnable or anything of an alcoholic nature from July 24th until 11pm February 1st.. When the Browns are celebrating winning SB XLIX
Between those dates I want to see that boy focusing on football.

That's the way I feel about the situation. Jim McMahon went to his first meeting with the Bears in a limo wearing a top hat and holding a Budweiser. He wasn't the easiest to get along with either, but he lead the Bears to a super bowl win.

To be fair, McMahon didn't come into the league with the reputation of being a jackass who couldn't handle his booze.
There's a big distinction in leeway and understanding when it comes to past behavior and reptutation.
The guy partied, but he kept his indiscretions under the radar, no small feat when you're working with BYU's honor code.
McMahon is actually a great example of what Manziel's doing wrong, to an extent. He still managed to be the 'Punky QB' without getting caught or landing himself in hot water.

Even Manziel's former teammates are fed up with Manziel Mania. Former Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews, a first-round pick of the Falcons, grew weary after a dozen Manziel questions Monday at the NFC rookies Play 60 event.
"How about another question about Jake or the Falcons?'' he said.
Seems he's getting tired of the MEDIA harping on the same thing. There are lots of other things they could be talking about, but this is there current hobby horse.

I've restrained myself to an extent on this debate...but you guys need to get real with yourselves.
You know how many Hollywood A-listers TMZ hounds day in and day out, who somehow manage to keep their partying to themselves?
TMZ may catch them on the trip from the door to the car service, but that's about it, because they're smart enough to keep it under the radar and not mug for every dolt holding up a camera.

So long as, he gets serious when training camps starts I don't even care. Be young and have fun Johnny cause your not gonna start anyways. Hoyer is busting his ass to get better while your living it up. He is keeping his mind clear and his body living healthy. What state will Johnny be in come training camp after living it up for the nest few weeks? Didn't want to draft johnny anyways. How many time we have to waste a pick on a QB at the bottom of round 1. Would think they would have learned by now ...
They could have stayed where they were and drafted Jimmy G(Tom Brady's successor) and got the best QB in the draft in the second round but instead we get party boy Manziel. SIGH!
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

No doubt.
I fear that he thinks life is still like it was in College Station, just on a bigger stage.
I really, really hope the kid shuts me up. Wouldn't bet on it, though.
Like I said way before the draft, if the first descriptor used to describe a prospect - especially at QB - is 'winner' or 'he just wins' or he has 'it', that's usually an indicator that they lack the tools or skills needed on the next level. Your Vince Youngs and Tim Tebows and Colt McCoys. He has more going for himself than those names, but he has a steep climb if he wants to make it in this league.
And partying in the summer won't stop him from doing that...but his intelligence and maturity might.

It's hilarious when PFT runs an article saying Browns players are getting tired of questions about Manziel...
Then stop asking them...
They referenced him during the fricken NBA DRAFT...
It's beyond ridiculous, and Johnny changing up his ways would just prompt a whole slew of new stories...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I disagree completely.
Manziel is throwing red meat into the lion's den right now.
I'd you want to carry yourself like an Alpha, expect to be focused on like one. And, yeah, when you make an ass out of yourself, they're going to pounce.
'Alpha looks like a fool' is a headline that will always sell.
QB is a different breed of a position. It's like being a general. It doesn't preclude you from letting loose, but you have to do it behind closed doors. Part of the gig.

You don't think if he goes to a club and gets his own area that's blocked off that the next day ESPN won't report
Browns QB Manziel has private party
Abd then they could run 5 different articles saying "Manziel private paryy, is he out of control? " or maybe "Manziel moves party to private, rift with Browns FO?"
Its the media, its their job to make something out of nothing, and a guy going out during his personal time and having fun isn't news unless you want it to be.

Absolutely not.
I think you're making exaggerated claims because you don't want to accept that the franchise QB is making an ass out of himself.
This isn't making a story out of nothing:
That's just smiling and shaking your head because a high-profile athlete made an ass out himself, and thus your day's work that much easier.
That's bonafide news. That's hits on your website, calls into your radio show. It matters. And reporters cover what matters to their audience. So let's stop pretending this is some nefarious ploy by the media to hound some guy trying to mind his own business.
You guys make it sound like Manziel is just quietly trying to live his life, while the media tries to pry their way in. That's not what's happening at all.
Manziel is pounding his chest and waving the flag of his own stupidity. And any reporter worth his salt would cover that. You seriously expect them to ignore it?
You guys try to paint a picture of the media saying 'Jeez, we've got to invent some story about Manziel today'. What's really happening is Manziel is in effect waving his arms and shouting 'Hey! Hey! Everybody look at me!'
Honestly...how do you expect them to respond?

Right now his conduct is right up there with Justin Bieber. May not be enough hype to go around. Symposium won't save individuals who don't want it saving. It is OK to show more class than this. Faces of franchises come in a number of forms. I just don't see this as a major concern yet.

I'm not making excuses about anything.
Does he want the attention? Probably.
Does that mean ESPN doesn't go out of their way? No. (Again, NBA Draft..)
I don't care if he's out partying on his off time, until it effects his play, and seeing as were not even in TC yet, it hasn't, he can do whatever the hell he wants.
He doesn't come across as the kind of guy that is going to be ok with just making 6 mil on his rookie deal. The guy wants fame, and the only way he can get that is being a great QB in this league, and I think that will drive him to do it.
But feel free to hate on him because you disagree with how he spends his free time.

Hey, Mary Kay: I was a bit surprised to read that you believe Manziel needs a chemical dependency assessment because of concerns that he may have a "drinking problem." Do you know something we don't know about a pattern of abusive driinking or are you, and perhaps others, jumping the gun because of pictures and videos of a partying lifestyle? If partying and having fun with celebs and women are the indicators for a possible drinking problem, then a large majority of the team and league may need to be assessed for chemical dependency. - Lawrence Burnley, Spokane, Wash. Hey Lawrence: My opinion on that is based largely on the fact that Manziel's parents and Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin mandated that he receive alcohol counseling in 2012, according to ESPN The Magazine and that Manziel's father told the magazine that he's concerned his son drinks to deal with stress and pressure. My take is this: Make sure Manziel checks out okay with a qualified professional, and if he does, then we can all go back to saying 'atta boy.' http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss..._medium=twitter

My bad ... I either missed that story, or maybe I saw it and it flew right over my head.
In fairness, that was not a recent event.
IIRC, he was a freshman when that happened.
Personally I keep going back and forth in my head between "he's just screwing around", to "he's just having fun", to "he has a problem" ..... and back again.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Since it virtually never happens on this board, I'd like to report that some of you have actually changed my opinion on this. A few weeks ago, I was firmly in the "people-need-to-leave-Johnny-alone" camp." But Pit has convinced me that giving a person an NFL contract does, and should, commit that person to more than simply football accomplishments. I was also resistant to PDR's claim that Manziel is dumb, thinking he is just immature. While I still think he is immature, I don't think intelligence can be separated from maturity. They go hand in hand. I also agree with Rishuz that no one will care about this stuff if Manziel wins games. Just like no one will care about Gordon's issues if he is winning games, despite what the moralists say.

You,Pit and Mac kill me. You get on a political thread and from high atop your soap box, preach about freedom and individuality. Now in the case of little johnny rotten, because he is not conforming to your standards of how a QB should behave,he's a moron,a punk,a spoiled brat. If I could give JFF advice,I'd tell him to ignore these people, they are either jealous or just plain old fashioned hypocrites.
Wow. That's a lot of babbling.
My comments have nothing to do with conformity. They have to do with Manziel's intelligence level, which doesn't appear to be very high.
I'd prefer an intelligent mind at the QB position.
I don't really care about the rest of it. Guy can go out and get hammered every night for all I care. Just be smart about it.
That was a lot of babbleing, but he's not entirely wrong.
It's probably not right to stand in judgement like some are doing.

But feel free to hate on him because you disagree with how he spends his free time.
Are you serious?

I'm with you on this one.
It's okay to yell at ESPN for making a spectacle out of him. At least Tebow didn't broadcast everything he did; ESPN made any story out of any minute thing he did. Now you have Manziel pulling Broadway Joe antics, enjoying it, and making a mockery out of himself.
He can do what we wants. Just don't broadcast every little obnoxious thing you do. You're getting paid millions to win a football game. Not millions for acting like an overgrown manchild.
