I've been looking into getting an IPS monitor. There's cheaper ones and expensive ones. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a noticeable difference between the cheaper and more expensive monitor.

Main reason I am looking at one is for photography. The the Dell ultrasharp series of monitors seems to be a popular choice, but can also be twice as much as some of the cheaper monitors.

I think the biggest issue you are going to find is, getting accurate information. Manufacturers use terms to describe things, but even then it isn't always accurate. And when it comes to monitor specs, many of the specs are based on manufacturer tests, and not any industry standards.

Your best bet is to stick with major brands, get several independent reviews, and talk to people in the industry that may have insight.

I have a 30" Dell U3011 that is about 2 years old and love it. I don't game nor do photography but I do love the 2560 x 1600 resolution when I am coding; the Visual Studio IDE is fantastic at this resolution.

I'm not sure if this has changed, but you need to use a display port to obtain the 2560 x 1600 resolution; a HDMI will not work (at least with mine) for that resolution.

You could always look at a 4k monitor if you really want to go all out:

I'd love to have 3840x2160 resolution!

Don't really know the answer to your question, but if it helps, my LG is by far the best monitor I've even had. The resolution clarity is remarkable.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

The max resolution seems to be the biggest difference between the cheap and expensive monitors. The cheaper ones still max out at 1920x1080. The higher resolution is definitely tempting.

I'm trying to get an idea if the expensive ones have a superior image quality or if it's just more bells and whistles, better quality build etc so I can decide if I want to break the bank or not.

4K standard isn't just about pixels, it also is 10 bit color precision. So it should look better on top of the pixel density

I want to buy one this year, so I can have my 2 1200p monitors on either side, so racing games can go 3 monitors wide, and for visual studio as columbusdawg mentioned
