Josh Gordon's agent Drew Rosenhaus will meet with Browns before camp to 'do the best job we can for him collectively' | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/07/post_184.html

EASTLAKE, Ohio -- Josh Gordon's agent Drew Rosenhaus said Thursday he'll meet with the Browns before training next week to discuss how the two parties can best help Gordon in the face of his looming drug suspension.

He also confirmed that the appeal hearing is coming up soon.

"I'm sure I'll get together with the Browns at some point before training camp to talk to them some more about all of our clients,'' Rosenhaus said at client Joe Haden's charity softball game at Classic Park, home of the Lake County Captains. "We're talking to them about Jabaal Sheard and a contract extension and I'm sure we'll talk about Josh some more and continue to work together and do the best job we can for him collectively.''

Rosenhaus declined to say much about Gordon's anticipated indefinite ban for violating the league's substance abuse for at least the third time. He reportedly tested positive for marijuana.

"Let's just say (the appeal hearing is) some point in the near future,'' Rosenhaus said. "I'm not permitted to divulge that.''

He also declined to comment on how Gordon's recent DWI in Raleigh, North Carolina might impact the appeal hearing and when he expects a resolution.

"I'm not going to talk about Josh,'' Rosenhaus said after the game. "I'm here tonight to support Joe and a really nice event. I really don't have anything to add about Josh's situation. Right now that's a league matter and as everyone knows he's got an appeal coming up and I really won't have anything to say about it until afterwards.

"The CBA, the NFLPA regulations really encourage agents not to talk about that kind of stuff. It's really confidential, and out of respect to Joe, I'm really here just kind of focused on his situation.''

Rosenhaus pointed to how well things have turned out for Haden, who was suspended four games in 2012 for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Haden said he used prescribed Adderall without notifying the NFL in advance.

In May, Haden signed a five-year contract extension worth $68 million, including $45 million in total guarantees and a $13.6 million average.

"For Joe it's all good,'' said Rosenhaus. "It's great the way things are going for him and it's nice to see him get this great support. It's a beautiful ballpark and the fans are tremendous here. It's great to see this kind of turnout. I can only imagine the support the team's going to get this year.''

If Gordon loses his appeal, he'll likely be banned from the NFL for at least a year, and be eligible to reapply for reinstatement with Commissioner Roger Goodell after the year is up.

Rosenhaus, Gordon's attorneys and the NFLPA are working to get the suspension reduced.

In the meantime, the Browns have reached out to several professionals to try to get Gordon some help for his substance abuse issues. His hearing on the DWI, for which his blood-alcohol level was .09 in a state where the legal limit is .08, is Aug. 26. Training camp begins July 26th, and the veterans report the day before.

Last season, Gordon was suspended two games and docked four game checks for failing a drug test, which he said was for codeine contained in his prescribed cough medicine.

Before the DWI over July 4th weekend, Gordon was scheduled to play in Haden's celebrity softball game.

Can throw all the help in all various fashions at someone... if they're not open to it, unwilling to accept or doesn't have the fire todo it for themselves - it's pretty pointless.

My faith in Gordon is a pinch above "next-to-nothing". A small pinch. We'll see if that changes when the facts unfold and why/true reason(s) he failed the test.

I have faith for Josh as a man, I have faith that he will turn his life around, I Have very little faith that he will do so when he is a NFL player

That's true ..... but they can offer the help and make their decisions about his future based upon his response to that help.

Sure feels as if the team doesn't have any decisions to make at this point. I suppose that if he's suspended they could cut him, that would be dumb. No cost no risk to just let him sit there on the beach. Offer up some counseling and the rest is really up to him.

If he fixes himself, then we may have a player for the ages..bye.. Perhaps the next Jerry Rice.

If he's suspended we're barred from having any contact with him whatsoever because the NFL is dumb.

I don't think that precludes us from paying for professional help for the kid. Anyway if we can't offer up the help, then certainly the League can or the NFLPA can.

Or his agent certainly can.

I'm not even suggesting an "official" collaboration between the player, agent, and team ...... but rather the team and agent sitting down and the team saying "Look, this cannot continue if Josh wants his career to continue. Here are some things we want to see happen, from in house rehab, to regular counselling, to a mentoring program ....... and so on. If Josh can do these things, then we'll welcome him back when he returns from suspension. If not, then we'll have to consider other options more in the best interests of the team."

Maybe the seriousness gets through to Gordon ..... maybe not. However, maybe between in house rehab, counselling, and mentoring, maybe someone gets through to him before he ends his career,

Well said. I would tend to agree with all this. It could be one of those "I messed up and that is what it took for me to see what I "could" have had, but threw away" ordeals for Josh. That's something that can haunt someone, hang over their head for a very... very long time. Possibly a lifetime.

It's the slow part of the offseason and he might not even know the board is back up. Don't think there is a need to worry right now.

He's fine. Posting regularly on Facebook. He's very busy right now. Plus, Steve has probably hit it right on the nose. Slow period. Tabber has been through it many years.

I left him a post on facebook. He hasn't responded yet. Probably not back home from his game.

Like I said, he is extremely busy and we all know there's not much substance much on the board as we all witness. He's been around long enough to have been there done that.

I think the Owner can be in contact with him if/when suspended. I remember Randy being the only one able to visit William Green in the hospital after he was stabbed. Cause he was the only one allowed contact??? Not sure about the new CBA on this. But hope Haslam cleans him up!

I wonder if the NFL is at all conflicted about suspending Gordon for 16 games for smoking weed, while Ray Rice and Greg Hardy will get 2-4 game suspensions for domestic violence. I know the rules are the rules, but that doesn't seem right or fair.

I don't know about this week or not, but I'm sure it won't be something we like. But I think we've all be expecting the worst.

I was actually referring to the avatar and not the Sig image... The Sig image feels a little like the old councilman's name has been peeled off and they put the new one on there.

Certainly in my world, hitting a woman is a more severe incident than smoking a joint.

Not sure what all the weird capitals are about but hitting a woman, at least in my books. is much more severe than smoking a joint, regardless of the number of times you smoked it.

Can't be any worse than the year + indefinite suspension that most are expecting anyway.

The only difference will be the certainty.

I suspect that this is why the Browns and Gordon's agent are trying to get some sort of rehab plan together while they are officially able to cooperate on one.

I personally hope that he gets nothing.Smoking weed is just as natural to some people as smoking a cigarette. Also,I don't feel that what someone does in the off season on their own time is anyone's business as long as they don't murder someone or beat the hell out of their woman or commit serious crimes.Just like any other persons job, what they do on the weekend is their own business as long as it doesn't affect their work. When I worked (retired now) if I got wrote up for every time I drank a beer on my days off or burnt one in my younger years,I would have had to go job hunting every week.

Would sure like to see him on the field for all the pre-season games and all of the regular season games. He is a talented young man and I am hoping this is our year and time to shine.

Well, odds are very poor that he gets no punishment at all. It seems apparent that he, at the very least, missed a test. That could out him into a year minimum indefinite suspension. Now there were reports that he tested clean the next day ..... so that could play into his favor ..... but who knows. I don't think that they can hold the DUI arrest against him as far as the substance abuse side of things is concerned, because I don't think that the substance abuse policy contains alcohol. Perhaps they can suspend him for that via the personal conduct side ..... but even there, he hasn't been convicted yet. Further, they have precedent regarding alcohol, and they have an owner with drug and alcohol problems as well.

I think that the best possible putcome, and this is less than a 5% likelihood IMHO, is that he did pass a test the day after missing one, is not suspended under the substance abuse program, but is suspended for missing the test for 4 games. Maybe they flip it under the personal conduct policy .... but again .... I see this as less than 5% likely. I think that he is gone for at least 8 games, and probably the whole year.

Poor, poor Josh. The NFL is sooooo mean. Josh is really misunderstood and he hasn't done anything wrong. Everyone else is at fault.

I suddenly became curious without enough time to look anything up, but, of those who were suspended for a year, what did they do to earn that? I mean, Josh is no PacMan Jones. What did Blackman do actually? I know he got in trouble with drugs but to what extent drugs played in his suspension I don't know. Who were the others and what did they do?

I'm not asking you to look it up. I can do that when I get home from work but... look it up. hahha
