Bye Bye Chomps! Hello Bullmastiff. I like it. Kevin Griffin, the Browns vice president of fan experience and marketing, told 92.3 The Fan on Sunday the club will use a bullmastiff as its mascot this season after years of just having costumed canines roaming the sidelines. The dog will be named Swagger and lead the team onto the field before games. It's the latest attempt by the Browns to play off the Dawg Pound. Canton McKinley High School has used live bulldogs for years. The same with the University of Georgia. The NFL employs few live animal mascots. The Seattle Seahawks boast Taima the hawk, the Denver Broncos use a white Arabian horse named Thunder II and the Baltimore Ravens have two ravens, Rise and Conquer. For those who aren't sure, this is a Bullmastiff. He looks like he should be a Cleveland Brown.

For a reason personal to me, I dont like that they are going to use a bullmastiff. I have no problem with them using a live dog as a mascot,just wish it wasnt a BMF.
I used to breed, train, and show Bullmastiffs, and work Bullmastiff rescue. Now dont get me wrong they are a wonderful family breed. But they do need knowledgeable owners, and I can see already the rise in rescues because people who have no clue will think they want one, because the are "cool"

My brother had a Bull Mastiff. She was around 180 lbs and afraid of her own shadow.

Yeah I don't feel real good about this. A lot of dogs get spooked in loud settings. Hope the thing isn't miserable.

If we HAVE to have a mascot, I approve of this choice.
Personally, I would like to see a Pitbull & Cane Corso (brindled) mix, but Bullmastiff is a fine choice.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

If it was a female Bullmastiff at 180lbs. It was either not a Bullmastiff, but maybe a Mastiff, and it was extremely over weight, and most likely abused at some point if it was scared of its own shadow.
Oh, and it is one word, Bullmastiff. Not Bull Mastiff, which would indicate it is a type of Mastiff, its not.

If they get one that has been raised and trained properly, that should not be an issue. Bullmastiffs as a breed are very confident, almost to a point of arrogant dogs. Especially males.
They are the best guard dog breed there is. They are not generally biters, but will put their big body between the threat and their family. My last one Zeuss used to sit on the edge of the front lawn when the kids were out playing in the front yard and just watch up and down the street. If someone came down the sidewalk in front of the house he wouldnt bark or growl. He would stand up at attention and put himself between the stranger and the kids and stay between them until the stranger was past the house.
Most people would just cross the street LOL

I have seen it. There was a movie that came out with David Arquette and the little kid from Two and a Half Men and the dog was a Bullmastiff. I think it was called See Spot Run. Six months after that movie came out calls for rescue to go get bullmastiffs from home or from the pound tripled.
Its the same thing that happens whenever a new 101 Dalmations movie comes out

it is indeed a mastiff, just of the bull variety not the english variety..not sure how its not a mastiff...i just abbreviated but I know exactly what kind of dog it is because my cousin has one and its the worlds biggest lapdog

I thought that a Bullmastiff was a cross breeding of a Bulldog and a Mastiff.
Yeah, according to the AKC, the foundation breeding was 40% Bulldog and 60% Mastiff.
As fara s people falling in love with the dogs and not taking care of them, that is definitely a legitimate concern. However, they could also create a program to go along with the use of the dog to let people know about the plight of many of these animals. Maybe you might want to contact the Browns and communicate your experience and concerns, and suggest such a thing.

Maybe she was a Mastiff then, but she was huge and not overweight. Obviously, not my dog, but my brother had her from puppyhood and she was never abused.

Yes the original development of the breed, hundreds of years ago was that mix. They are a breed unto themselves. they are not a "type" of mastiff.

It is a separate breed. It has been a separate breed that was developed hundreds of years ago. There are many types of mastiffs. Such as Neopolitan...etc...
A Bullmastiff is not a type of mastiff. Hence the one word. Bullmastiff, not Bull Mastiff.
I think through 3 conformation champions, two obedience champions, and a lineage that has produced 10 champions, including an dual nations champion, I know a little about the breed.

Yeah at 180 she was definitely a mastiff. The average female Bullmastiff that is not overweight will run around 100 to 130. The average male will run 110 to 140.

I'm not a big fan of live mascots. IMO having cheerleaders and other human mascots is a better choice.

Pardon me for overstepping if I am. However, I don't think Peen was saying it would be a TDI dog. Rather, it would be a dog that was extremely well taken care of, extremely well behaved, extremely well mannered, and extremely well trained. A dog probably along the lines of my cousin's dog that will "sit" on command, and stay there indefinitely. A dog that will run if told to run, and will come back as soon as the command is given. Etc.

It also could be a service dog. They are so well trained you can take them anywhere.

There are not a whole lot of Bullmastiff breeders/trainers in the area. It is a pretty small community. Training a Bullmastiff is not like training a lab. You have to know how they operate.

Yes. Did some work for a couple 2 years ago. They had a dog that "flunked" out of service dog school because he barked.
No joke - the dog was awesome. Tell the dog to "sit", that's what he did until he was told otherwise. Can give many, many examples from that dog alone - examples of well trained dogs.

It's not like this is unknown territory or something.... teams of various sports at every level have been using live animals as mascots for more than a century. Maybe even longer than that?
It's nothing more than a few phone calls for our front office to find the people that will lead them to the people that will get them what they want, and an animal with the appropriate temperament and personality will be chosen, and there will be a trainer/handler.
It ain't rocket surgery.
